PURPOSE: Occult inguinal hernias (IH) predispose peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients to the symptomatic IH formation after starting PD, which may cause complications. We conducted a retrospective study to assess the benefit/risk profile of routine laparoscopic examination for occult IH (RLEOH) with a synchronous repair in patients receiving PD catheter placement. METHODS: 432 patients were enrolled in this study. Patients with an internal hernia sac at all sizes were deemed to have occult IH. We retrospectively reviewed data including demographic characteristics and operative details. We also measured incidence rates of symptomatic IH, metachronous IH repair, and catheter survival over a follow-up period after starting PD. RESULTS: These patients were classified into the RLEOH group (n = 365) and the non-RLEOH group (n = 67). The RLEOH group was subdivided into occult IH with a synchronous repair (n = 17; the subgroup A), no occult IH (n = 339; the subgroup B), and occult IH without a synchronous repair (n = 9; the subgroup C). The incidence rates of symptomatic IH developed after staring PD in subgroups A, B, and C were 0, 5.6, and 22.2%, respectively, whereas that in the non-RLEOH group was 13.4%. The RLEOH group had a reduced hazard ratio for metachronous IH repair compared with the non-RLEOH group (HR = 0.426; 95% CI 0.195-0.930, p = 0.032). None of our patients suffered from herniorrhaphy-related complications. CONCLUSION: RLEOH with a synchronous repair during PD catheter insertion confers clinical benefits in reducing the risk of developing IH after starting PD and the need for a metachronous repair. This is a safe and reasonable approach.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Spine debulking surgery in patients with hypervascular spinal metastasis is associated with massive intraoperative blood loss, but currently, the vascularity of tumor is determined by invasive conventional angiography or dynamic contrast MR imaging. We aimed to investigate the usefulness of noninvasive dual-energy CT-DSA, comparing it with conventional angiography in evaluating the vascularity of spinal metastasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study from January to December 2018. A total of 15 patients with spinal metastasis undergoing dual-energy CT, conventional DSA, and subsequent debulking surgery were included. CT-DSA images were produced after rigid-body registration and subtraction between CT phases. Qualitative and quantitative assessments of tumor vascularity were conducted. Correlations between CT-DSA and conventional DSA results were evaluated using the Spearman coefficient. The mean enhancement in the estimated tumor volume and surgical blood loss was compared between hypervascular and nonhypervascular groups using the Wilcoxon rank sum test. RESULTS: The CT-DSA and DSA results were strongly correlated, with ρ = 0.87 (P < .001). The DSA and the quantitative enhancement index also showed a strong correlation with ρ = 0.83 (P < .001). Wilcoxon rank sum testing between hypervascular and nonhypervascular CT-DSA groups showed a difference in enhancement indices (P = .0003). The blood loss between the hypervascular and nonhypervascular groups was nonsignificant (P = .09). CONCLUSIONS: Dual-energy CT-DSA correlates well with conventional DSA in assessing the vascularity of spinal metastasis. It may serve as a noninvasive preoperative evaluation option before debulking surgery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Simple-but-precise evaluation of cerebral perfusion is crucial for the treatment of Moyamoya disease. We aimed to develop a standardized scoring system for MR perfusion suitable for Moyamoya disease evaluation and investigate the postoperative serial changes and outcome predictors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2013 to December 2016, patients diagnosed with Moyamoya disease and receiving indirect revascularization were recruited prospectively. Clinical data and serial imaging studies were analyzed. The TTP maps were standardized using cerebellar reference values. We developed a scoring system of standardized TTP maps: 14 points for each hemisphere with higher points indicating better perfusion. RESULTS: In total, 24 children (4-17 years of age, 41 hemispheres) and 20 adults (18-51 years of age, 34 hemispheres) were included. The mean preoperative TTP scores were higher in children (7.34 ± 3.90) than in adults (4.88 ± 3.24). The standardized TTP maps revealed dynamic improvement with an increase in the corresponding scores at the 1-, 3-, and 6-month postoperative follow-ups; the scores stabilized after 6 months. The mean improvement in the 6-month scores of the pediatric and adult groups was 4.15 ± 3.55 and 6.03 ± 3.04, respectively. The 6-month TTP score improvements were associated with Matsushima grades. If we took score improvement as the outcome, the preoperative TTP score was the only significant predictor in multivariable analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The standardized TTP maps and scoring system facilitated the quantification of the sequential perfusion changes during Moyamoya disease treatment. The preoperative perfusion status was the only predictor of indirect revascularization outcome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Permanent common carotid artery and/or ICA occlusion is an effective treatment for carotid blowout syndrome. Besides postoperative thromboembolic infarction, permanent common carotid artery and/or ICA occlusion may cause borderzone infarction when the collateral flow to the deprived brain territory is inadequate. In this study, we aimed to test the predictive value of CTA for post-permanent common carotid artery and/or ICA occlusion borderzone infarction in patients with carotid blowout syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we included 31 patients undergoing unilateral permanent common carotid artery and/or ICA occlusion for carotid blowout syndrome between May 2009 and December 2016. The vascular diameter of the circle of Willis was evaluated using preprocedural CTA, and the risk of borderzone infarction was graded as very high risk, high risk, intermediate risk, low risk, and very low risk. RESULTS: The performance of readers' consensus on CTA for predicting borderzone infarction was excellent, with an area under receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.938 (95% confidence interval, 0.85-1.00). We defined very high risk, high risk, and intermediate risk as positive for borderzone infarction, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of CTA for borderzone infarction were 100% (7/7), 62.5% (15/24), 43.8% (7/16), and 100% (15/15), respectively. The interobserver reliability was excellent (κ = 0.807). No significant difference in the receiver operating characteristic curves was found between the 2 readers (P = .114). CONCLUSIONS: CTA can be used to predict borderzone infarction after permanent common carotid artery and/or ICA occlusion by measuring the collateral vessels of the circle of Willis.

Tumours are comprised of a highly heterogeneous population of cells, of which only a small subset of stem-like cells possess the ability to regenerate tumours in vivo. These cancer stem cells (CSCs) represent a significant clinical challenge as they are resistant to conventional cancer therapies and play essential roles in metastasis and tumour relapse. Despite this realization and great interest in CSCs, it has been difficult to develop CSC-targeted treatments due to our limited understanding of CSC biology. Here, we present evidence that specific histone deacetylases (HDACs) play essential roles in the CSC phenotype. Utilizing a novel CSC model, we discovered that the HDACs, HDAC1 and HDAC7, are specifically over-expressed in CSCs when compared to non-stem-tumour-cells (nsTCs). Furthermore, we determine that HDAC1 and HDAC7 are necessary to maintain CSCs, and that over-expression of HDAC7 is sufficient to augment the CSC phenotype. We also demonstrate that clinically available HDAC inhibitors (HDACi) targeting HDAC1 and HDAC7 can be used to preferentially target CSCs. These results provide actionable insights that can be rapidly translated into CSC-specific therapies.

BACKGROUND: The necessity of routine sub-nipple biopsy was uncertain, and the role of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting nipple invasion in patients who have been selected for nipple sparing mastectomy (NSM) has not been adequately evaluated. METHODS: We retrospectively collected and analyzed the medical and surgical records of 434 patients with primary operable breast cancer who met the criteria for NSM and underwent breast surgery during the period January 2011 to December 2015. Patients were stratified into three risk groups (low, intermediate, and high) according to tumor size and tumor-to-nipple distance. RESULTS: Among the 434 patients in this study, 29 (6.7%) had occult invasion of the nipple-areola complex (NAC). Sub-nipple biopsy had a sensitivity of 84.6%, a specificity of 100%, a false negative rate of 1.2%, a false positive rate of 0%, and an overall accuracy rate of 98.8% in confirming NAC invasion. The NAC invasion rate was 0% in the low-risk group, 5.1% in the intermediate-risk group, and 19.7% in the high-risk group (P < 0.01). The overall NPV of preoperative MRI for predicting NAC invasion was 94.8%. Cost analysis revealed that the cost of NSM with sub-nipple biopsy was significantly higher than that of NSM alone, with a mean difference in cost of USD 238.5 (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The high negative predictive value of MRI for NAC invasion is useful for selection of patients receiving NSM. Sub-nipple biopsy is a reliable procedure to detect occult NAC invasion, however, routine use is not cost-effect for low risk patients.

Hypertension is associated with neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive impairment. Several studies using spontaneous hypertensive rats to study the effect of hypertension on memory performance and adult hippocampal neurogenesis have reached inconsistent conclusions. The contradictory findings may be related to the genetic variability of spontaneous hypertensive rats due to the conventional breeding practices. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of hypertension on hippocampal structure and function in isogenic mice. Hypertension was induced by the '2 kidneys, 1 clip' method (2K1C) which constricted one of the two renal arteries. The blood pressures of 2K1C mice were higher than the sham group on post-operation day 7 and remained high up to day 28. Mice with 2K1C-induced hypertension had impaired long-term, but not short-term, memory. Dendritic complexity of CA1 neurons and hippocampal neurogenesis were reduced by 2K1C-induced hypertension on post-operation day 28. Furthermore, 2K1C decreased the levels of hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor, while blood vessel density and activation status of astrocytes and microglia were not affected. In conclusion, hypertension impairs hippocampus-associated long-term memory, dendritic arborization and neurogenesis, which may be caused by down-regulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling pathways.

This study aimed to identify independent predictors of clinical and microbiological treatment failure and develop a predictive model for neonates with bloodstream infection (BSI). This study included 1087 episodes of BSIs in 793 neonates in a tertiary-level neonatal intensive care unit of northern Taiwan between 2004 and 2012. Patient demographics, underlying chronic comorbidities, clinical features, antimicrobial treatment and microbiological characteristics were evaluated. The presence of underlying congenital anomalies (odds ratio [OR] 2.12, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09 to 4.10) and pulmonary hypertension (OR 3.63, 95% CI 1.70 to 7.74), infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria (OR 2.89, 95% CI 1.23 to 6.79), group B Streptococcus (OR 3.15, 95% CI 1.33 to 7.46), and fungi (OR 4.13, 95% CI 2.02 to 8.46), a Neonatal Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System score of ≥ 23 (OR 6.96, 95% CI 2.55 to 28.58), inappropriate antibiotics (OR 2.13, 95% CI 1.41 to 3.23), and concomitant meningitis (OR 4.25, 95% CI 2.08 to 8.69) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (OR 2.73, 95% CI 1.22 to 6.13) were identified as independent risk factors for 28-day treatment failure in neonatal BSI. A risk score model was created by adding the points for each independent risk factor, and had a c-statistic of 0.83. Patients with risk scores of 0, 4, 8, 12 and 15 had estimated 28-day treatment failure rates of approximately 3.5%, 17.0%, 53.5%, 86.6% and 95.9%, respectively. This predictive model, calculated after documentation of a BSI, reflects a spectrum of BSI severity and was associated with subsequent treatment failure through illness severity score and case mix variables. This simple score could prove useful in clinical and research settings, and practical in estimating the prognosis.

We aimed to characterize the incidence, clinical features, risk factors and outcomes of recurrent late-onset sepsis (LOS) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). All neonates with LOS from the NICU of a tertiary-level teaching hospital in northern Taiwan between 2004 and 2011 were enrolled for analyses. A case-control study was performed to determine risk factors for recurrence. Of 713 neonates with LOS, 150 (21.0%) experienced recurrence and 48 (6.7%) had >1 recurrences; c. two-thirds of recurrent LOS occurred in infants with birth weight (BW)≦1500 g or gestational age (GA)≦30 weeks. The recurrent LOS episodes were significantly more severe and had a higher sepsis-attributable mortality rate than the first episodes. The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 30.7% for neonates with recurrent LOS and 7.8% for those with single LOS (odds ratio (OR), 5.22; 95% CI, 3.28-8.30). When both BW and GA were controlled, neonates with recurrent LOS had a significantly prolonged hospitalization compared with the controls (median 109 vs. 84 days, p<0.001). After multivariate logistic regression, longer duration of total parenteral nutrition (TPN; OR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.10-1.52 for every 10-day increment), presence of congenital anomalies (OR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.10-6.35) and neurological co-morbidities (OR, 4.14; 95% CI, 1.14-15.10) were identified as the independent risk factors for LOS recurrence. We concluded that c. one-fifth of neonates with LOS had recurrence, which significantly resulted in prolonged hospitalization and increased mortality. Longer TPN administration, presence of congenital anomalies and neurological co-morbidities are independently associated with recurrent LOS.

14-3-3 proteins have important roles in several cellular processes such as cell cycle progression, the DNA-damage checkpoint and apoptosis. We have shown previously that depleting 14-3-3η, a 14-3-3 isoform, enhances mitotic cell death, and that combining it with microtubule agents is more effective for anticancer therapeutics. In this study, we investigated whether depleting 14-3-3η can be combined with radiotherapy to enhance its therapeutic efficacy. We found that depleting 14-3-3η resulted in a synergistic radiosensitizing effect when combined with radiotherapy in several glioblastoma cell lines, where its specific expression and correlation of its expression level with malignancy have been reported. The radiosensitizing effect was associated with enhanced mitotic cell death by 14-3-3η depletion but not with mitotic catastrophe, which is one of the major cell death mechanisms observed in response to irradiation of most solid tumors. These results suggest that 14-3-3η may be a therapeutic target to overcome radioresistance in glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Carotid blowout is a serious late complication of prior treatment of advanced head and neck cancer. We evaluate the efficacy of CTA in the diagnosis of impending carotid blowout syndrome in patients with head and neck cancer, and its capability to predict clinical outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical data of 29 patients with impending carotid blowout who underwent CTA were collected and analyzed. Imaging signs included tissue necrosis, exposed artery, viable perivascular tumor, pseudoaneurysm, and contrast extravasation. DSA was obtained in 20 patients. One-year outcomes were compared based on management. RESULTS: The most common CTA finding was necrosis (94%), followed by exposed artery (73%), viable tumor (67%), pseudoaneurysm (58%), and contrast extravasation (30%). Exposed artery, pseudoaneurysm, and contrast extravasation were the 3 CTA findings related to outcomes. All of the pseudoaneurysm and contrast extravasation cases were associated with an exposed artery. An exposed artery was the most important prognostic predictor and could not be diagnosed on DSA. Patients without the 3 findings on CTA (group 1) had the best survival rate at 1-year follow-up, followed by patients with the 3 findings treated immediately by permanent artery occlusion (group 2). Patients with the 3 findings who had no immediate treatment (group 3) had the worst outcomes (P < .001 in group 1 vs group 3 and group 2 vs group 3; P = .056 group 1 vs group 2). CONCLUSIONS: CTA, with its ability to diagnose an exposed artery compared with DSA, may offer important management and prognostic information in patients with impending carotid blowout.

OBJECTIVE: To describe CT findings of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) pulmonary infection in non-AIDS immunocompromised patients (ICPs) and to compare these findings with those in immunocompetent patients. METHODS: From July 2000 to August 2007, 369 patients (mean age 58.3 years; 169 males and 200 females) with pulmonary NTM infection were retrospectively reviewed. Of these 369 patients, 24 ICPs (mean age 64.8 years; 15 males and 9 females) were identified. 16 patients had diabetes mellitus, and 6 patients had received long-term steroid therapy. One had received solid organ transplantation and one had received high-dose chemotherapy for haematological disease. 24 age- and sex-matched immunocompetent patients (mean age 64.6 years; 15 males and 9 females) were selected as the control group from the same registry. CT images were reviewed in consensus by three chest radiologists, who were blinded to immune status. Each lung lobe was evaluated in terms of extent of the lesion, bronchiectasis, parenchymal opacity and the presence of ancillary findings. results: A total of 287 lobes were evaluated in ICPs and the control group. The ICPs showed a higher prevalence of ill-defined nodules, with cavities and large opacity >2 cm with/without cavity (p=0.03, 0.04 and 0.02, respectively). Regardless of the immune status, the most common CT findings were bronchiectasis and ill-defined nodules without cavity. CONCLUSION: The most common CT findings of pulmonary NTM infection in ICPs were bronchiectasis and ill-defined nodules, similar to those in the control group. Ill-defined nodules with cavity and large opacity >2 cm with/without cavity were more frequently found in ICPs. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: In patients affected by NTM infection, large opacities and cavitation in pulmonary nodules are more frequent in ICPs than in immunocompetent patients.

The objectives of this study were to survey elementary school students regarding the environmental conditions of their elementary schools and to assess the relationship between air pollution and allergic disease using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire. Therefore, this study was designed as a cross-sectional study. In this study, seven elementary schools were selected and they were classified into three categories. The selection included one school with no traffic-related or other pollutants, three with traffic-related pollutants, and three with traffic-related and other pollutants from industrial and filling station sources. The ISAAC questionnaire survey was given to all of the students except to those in the 1st grade who were presumed to be less likely to be exposed to the school environment than the remainder of the students attending those seven schools. The assessment of allergic disease was conducted on a total of 4,545 students. Three school zones with critical exposure were selected within each school and they were evaluated based on the levels of black carbon (BC), PM10, SO2, NO2, and O3. There was a significant increase in the risks based on the odds ratios of treatment experiences (within 1 year) for allergy-related diseases such as asthma and allergic rhinitis (a) in the school group with traffic-related pollutants and the school group with complex pollutants were 2.12 (1.41-3.19) and 1.59 (1.06-2.37), respectively, in comparison to the school groups with no exposure to pollutants. This was determined based on the odds ratio of symptoms and treatment experiences for allergy-related diseases by group based on the home town zone as a reference. Also, in the case of atopic dermatitis, the odds ratio of treatment experiences (within 1 year) was 1.42 (1.02-1.97), which indicated elevated risks compared to the students in the S1 school. A regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between the substances and the symptomatic experiences within the last year. There were significant increases in the odds ratio of the symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis and the BC and SO2 in the complex pollution areas. The results of the assessment of the relationship between atopic dermatitis-associated symptoms and O3 showed that the odds ratio increased with statistical significance.

14-3-3 proteins are involved in several cellular processes, including the G1/S and G2/M cell cycle transitions. However, their roles during mitosis are not well understood. Here, we showed that depletion of 14-3-3η, a 14-3-3 protein isoform, enhanced mitotic cell death, resulting in sensitization to microtubule inhibitors and inhibition of aneuploidy formation. The enhanced mitotic cell death by depletion of 14-3-3η appeared to be both caspase-dependent and independent. Furthermore, enhanced mitotic cell death and a reduction in aneuploidy following 14-3-3η depletion were independent of the mitotic checkpoint, which is thought to be the primary signaling event in the regulation of the cell death induced by microtubule inhibitors. When 14-3-3η depletion was combined with microtubule inhibitors in HCT116 and U87MG cells, it sensitized both cancer cell lines to microtubule inhibitors. These results collectively suggest that 14-3-3η may be required for mitotic progression and may be considered as a novel anti-cancer strategy in combination with microtubule inhibitors.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The use of arterial closure device in patients with prolonged high ACT values has not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to compare the safety and efficacy of an arterial closure device, Angio-Seal, with manual compression in patients on anticoagulation following neurointerventional procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a 2-center prospective study approved by our institutional review boards. In total, 153 consecutive patients with 174 arteriotomies (86 men, 67 women; mean age, 56.1 ± 16.2 years) following femoral arterial puncture for neurointerventional procedures were enrolled in convenience sampling. All of the patients were systemically heparinized with an ACT between 250 and 500 seconds before removal of the sheath after the procedure. Group 1 consisted of 104 arteriotomies that were closed with an arterial closure device (Angio-Seal), and group 2 consisted of 70 arteriotomies treated with manual compression. The ACT before sheath removal, time to hemostasis, and complications immediately and 24 hours after the procedure were recorded. RESULTS: The mean ACT before sheath removal was 284.8 ± 37.6 seconds (range, 250-414 seconds). The mean hemostasis time was significantly shorter in group 1 (2.4 ± 11.7 minutes) compared with group 2 (44.7 ± 27.4 minutes) (95% CI, 38.16-51.24 minutes; P < .001). Hematoma occurred in 9 patients in group 1 (8.6%) and 18 in group 2 (25.7%). One patient developed an arterial occlusion after hemostasis with the closure device, but this was successfully revascularized. CONCLUSIONS: Angio-Seal was found to safely and effectively achieve rapid closure of the femoral access site in patients undergoing neuroendovascular procedures under systemic heparinization with an ACT in the range of 250-500 seconds.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to diagnose microvascular invasion in patients with solitary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from pre-operative CT imaging. METHODS: 102 patients with solitary HCC who underwent curative hepatectomy were retrospectively included in our study. The pre-operative 3-phase CT imaging and laboratory data for the 102 patients were reviewed. Tumour size, tumour margin, peritumoral enhancement and α-fetoprotein level were assessed. Surgical pathology was reviewed; tumour differentiation, liver fibrosis score and microvascular invasion were recorded. RESULTS: The histopathological results revealed that 50 HCCs were positive and the other 52 were negative for microvascular invasion. Univariate analysis revealed that tumour size (p = 0.036), higher Edmondson-Steiner grade (p = 0.047) and non-smooth tumour margin (p < 0.001) showed statistically significant associations with microvascular invasion. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that non-smooth tumour margin had a statistically significant association with microvascular invasion only (p < 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the non-smooth tumour margin in the prediction of microvascular invasion were 66%, 86.5%, 82.5% and 72.6%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Non-smooth tumour margin in pre-operative CT had a statistically significant association with microvascular invasion. More aggressive treatment should be considered in HCC patients with suspected positive microvascular invasion.

Turkey parvovirus belongs to the family Parvoviridae, subfamily Parvovirinae, Genus parvovirus. Since the initial report on turkey parvovirus in the United States appeared in 1983, there had been no further reports of parvovirus in turkeys until 2008. The aims of our study were to determine the prevalence of parvovirus in commercial turkey flocks using PCR; to determine their genetic relationship to previous strains identified in North America and Europe; and to test samples for enteric viruses by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A total of 169 fecal samples collected from 42 turkey farms in four different states within the United States between 2000 and 2010 were examined. We found that the most frequently detected viruses by TEM were small round viruses, accounting for 52% of the examined samples; however, the PCR detected parvoviruses in 71% of the samples. The phylogenetic analysis of partial nonstructural gene sequences showed a certain degree of variability among the turkey samples tested in the study. Moreover, there was a clear dichotomy in the phylogenetic tree between chicken and turkey samples, with the exception of one turkey isolate from 2000, which clustered together with the chicken group.

Telomere length is critical for chromosome stability that affects cell proliferation and survival. Telomere elongation by telomerase is inhibited by the telomeric protein, TRF1. Tankyrase-1 (TNKS1) poly(ADP-ribosyl)ates TRF1 and releases TRF1 from telomeres, thereby allowing access of telomerase to the telomeres. TNKS1-mediated poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation also appears to be crucial for regulating the mitotic cell cycle. In searching for proteins that interact with polo-like kinase-1 (Plk1) by using complex proteomics, we identified TNKS1 as a novel Plk1-binding protein. Here, we report that Plk1 forms a complex with TNKS1 in vitro and in vivo, and phosphorylates TNKS1. Phosphorylation of TNKS1 by Plk1 appears to increase TNKS1 stability and telomeric poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) activity. By contrast, targeted inhibition of Plk1 or mutation of phosphorylation sites decreased the stability and PARP activity of TNKS1, leading to distort mitotic spindle-pole assembly and telomeric ends. Taken together, our results provide evidence of a novel molecular mechanism in which phosphorylation of TNKS1 by Plk1 may help regulate mitotic spindle assembly and promote telomeric chromatin maintenance.

Domestic cats have several features that make them ideal vehicles for interspecies transmission of influenza viruses; however, they have been largely overlooked as potential reservoirs or bridging hosts. In this study, we conducted serological surveillance to assess the prevalence of novel pandemic H1N1 as well as seasonal human influenza virus infections in domestic cats in Ohio. Four hundred serum samples collected from domestic cats (September 2009 to September 2010) were tested using a hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. The seroprevalences of pandemic H1N1, seasonal H1N1, and H3N2 were 22.5%, 33%, and 43.5%, respectively. In addition, a significant association between clinical feline respiratory disease and influenza virus infection was documented. In this sample of cats, the prevalence of pandemic H1N1 did not follow the seasonality pattern of seasonal H1N1 or H3N2 influenza, similar to observations in humans. Pandemic H1N1 seroprevalence did not vary in relation to ambient temperature changes, while the seroprevalence of seasonal H3N2 and H1N1 influenza viruses increased with the decline of ambient temperature. Our results highlight the high prevalence of influenza virus infection in domestic cats, a seasonality pattern of influenza virus infection comparable to that in humans, and an association of infection with clinical respiratory disease.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is an uncommon complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Here we report a 52-year-old woman with flare up of lupus activity, manifesting as spontaneous cerebral and spinal SAH due to central nervous system vasculitis. The patient received external ventricular drainage for hydrocephalus and pulse steroid and intravenous cyclophosphamide therapies. Her neurological deficits gradually improved with only minimal gait unsteadiness at discharge. Although very rare, cerebral and spinal SAH related to vasculitis could be one of the presentations of SLE flare up.
