RESUMO

In recent years, semiconductor nanomaterials, as one of the most promising and applied classes of engineered nanomaterials, have been widely used in industries such as photovoltaics, electronic devices, and biomedicine. However, occupational exposure is unavoidable during the production, use, and disposal stages of products containing these materials, thus posing potential health risks to workers. The intricacies of the work environment present challenges in obtaining comprehensive data on such exposure. Consequently, there remains a significant gap in understanding the exposure risks and toxic effects associated with semiconductor nanomaterials. This paper provides an overview of the current classification and applications of typical semiconductor nanomaterials. It also delves into the existing state of occupational exposure, methodologies for exposure assessment, and prevailing occupational exposure limits. Furthermore, relevant epidemiological studies are examined. Subsequently, the review scrutinizes the toxicity of semiconductor nanomaterials concerning target organ toxicity, toxicity mechanisms, and influencing factors. The aim of this review is to lay the groundwork for enhancing the assessment of occupational exposure to semiconductor nanomaterials, optimizing occupational exposure limits, and promoting environmentally sustainable development practices in this domain.

RESUMO

As a highly promising nanomaterial, exploring the impact of the liver, a vital organ, stands out as a crucial focus in the examination of its biological effects. Kupffer cells (KCs) are one of the first immune cells to contact with exotic-substances in liver. Therefore, this study investigates the immunomodulatory effects and mechanisms of polyethylene glycol-modified graphene oxide (GO-PEG) on KCs. Initial RNA-seq and KEGG pathway analyses reveal the inhibition of the TOLL-like receptor, TNF-α and NOD-like receptor pathways in continually stimulated KCs exposed to GO-PEG. Subsequent biological experiments validate that a 48-hour exposure to GO-PEG alleviates LPS-induced KCs immune activation, characterized by a shift in polarization from M1 to M2. The underlying mechanism involves the absorption of double-stranded RNA/single-stranded RNA, inhibiting the activation of TLR3 and TLR7 in KCs. Employing a Kupffer/AML12 cell co-culture model and animal studies, it is observed that GO-PEG indirectly inhibit oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptosis in AML12 cells, partially mitigating systemic inflammation and preserving liver tissue/function. This effect is attributed to the paracrine interaction between KCs and hepatocytes. These findings suggest a meaningful and effective strategy for treating liver inflammation, particularly when combined with anti-inflammatory drugs.

RESUMO

E-cigarettes, also known as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), are mainly used among adolescents and young adults. Similar to traditional cigarettes, different concentrations of nicotine are also added to E-cigarette's liquid (E-liquid), but due to the supplementation of chemicals such as propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG) and flavors, it is difficult to determine the risk after using E-cigarettes. And given to the specificity of the aerosol particle composition and atomization process of E-cigarettes, it is necessary to assess the neurotoxic effects of long-term E-cigarettes use. In this study, two commercial nicotine-containing (5%) and nicotine-free E-liquids were diluted to investigate the neurobehavioral changes and addictive tendencies of developing C. elegans after sub-chronic exposure to E-liquid. The results showed that sub-chronic exposure of E-liquid could lead to impaired growth and development of nematodes, abnormal general neuromotor behavior and advanced learning and memory behavior, and nicotine-containing E-liquid could also lead to increased addiction tendency of nematodes. Although the damage effect of nicotine free E-liquid is smaller than that of the nicotine-containing group, its toxic effect cannot be ignored. Further analysis of the neurotoxicity mechanism found that redox imbalance-mediated mitochondrial stress and aging may be important causes of E-liquid-induced biological damage. The biosafety of e-cigarette aerosols was also included in the assessment. The study found that the heated atomization process did not alter the E-liquid components, and E-cigarette aerosols still have the effect of interfering with the growth and development of nematodes and neurobehavior, and its addictive nature is also of concern. This study can provide new ideas for future studies on the neurotoxic effects and safety assessment of the E-cigarettes, and provide theoretical reference for the study on the injury mechanism of E-cigarettes.

RESUMO

Waterbird monitoring is the foundation of conservation and management strategies in almost all types of wetland ecosystems. China's improved wetland protection infrastructure, which includes remote devices for the collection of larger quantities of acoustic and visual data on wildlife species, increased the need for data filtration and analysis techniques. Object detection based on deep learning has emerged as a basic solution for big data analysis that has been tested in several application fields. However, these deep learning techniques have not yet been tested for small waterbird detection from real-time surveillance videos, which can address the challenge of waterbird monitoring in real time. We propose an improved detection method by adding an extra prediction head, SimAM attention module, and sequential frame to YOLOv7, termed as YOLOv7-waterbird, for real-time video surveillance devices to identify attention regions and perform waterbird monitoring tasks. With the Waterbird Dataset, the mean average precision (mAP) value of YOLOv7-waterbird was 67.3%, which was approximately 5% higher than that of the baseline model. Furthermore, the improved method achieved a recall of 87.9% (precision = 85%) and 79.1% for small waterbirds (defined as pixels less than 40 × 40), suggesting a better performance for small object detection than the original method. This algorithm could be used by the administration of protected areas or other groups to monitor waterbirds with higher accuracy using existing surveillance cameras and can aid in wildlife conservation to some extent.

RESUMO

The Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus), smallest of the "gray" geese, is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and protected in all range states. There are three populations, with the least studied being the Eastern population, shared between Russia and China. The extreme remoteness of breeding enclaves makes them largely inaccessible to researchers. As a substitute for visitation, remotely tracking birds from wintering grounds allows exploration of their summer range. Over a period of three years, and using highly accurate GPS tracking devices, eleven individuals of A. erythropus were tracked from the key wintering site of China, to summering, and staging sites in northeastern Russia. Data obtained from that tracking, bolstered by ground survey and literature records, were used to model the summer distribution of A. erythropus. Although earlier literature describes a patchy summer range, the model suggests a contiguous summer habitat range is possible, although observations to date cannot confirm A. erythropus is present throughout the modeled range. The most suitable habitats are located along the coasts of the Laptev Sea, primarily the Lena Delta, in the Yana-Kolyma Lowland, and smaller lowlands of Chukotka with narrow riparian extensions upstream along major rivers such as the Lena, Indigirka, and Kolyma. The probability of A. erythropus presence is related to areas with altitude less than 500 m with abundant wetlands, especially riparian habitat, and a climate with precipitation of the warmest quarter around 55 mm and mean temperature around 14°C during June-August. Human disturbance also affects site suitability, with a gradual decrease in species presence starting around 160 km from human settlements. Remote tracking of animal species can bridge the knowledge gap required for robust estimation of species distribution patterns in remote areas. Better knowledge of species' distribution is important in understanding the large-scale ecological consequences of rapid global change and establishing conservation management strategies.

RESUMO

Ice VII and ice X are the two most dominant phases, stable over a large pressure range between 2 and 150 GPa and made of fundamentally different chemical bonding. Yet, the two ice phases share a similar bcc-based crystal structure and lattice constants, resulting in a challenge to discern the crystal structure of ice VII and ice X. Here, we present well-resolved X-ray diffraction data of H2O in quasi-hydrostatic H2 and He pressure media, clearly resolving the two ice phases to 130 GPa and the dissociative nature of ice VII to X transition occurring at 20-50 GPa in H2O-H2 and 60-70 GPa in H2O-He. The present diffraction data permits, for the first time, the accurate determination of the bulk moduli B0 of 225 (or 228) GPa for ice X and 6.2 (or 4.5) GPa for ice VII, in H2O-H2 (or H2O-He), which can provide new constraints for Giant planetary models.

RESUMO

Plateau zokor (Myospalax baileyi) and plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) are endemic fossorial vertebrates in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau alpine meadow ecosystem. Their different burrowing activities together transform soil structure and then significantly change the landscape of meadow ecosystem. However, how their burrowing activities impact greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the pattern of GHG emissions between different types of tunnel burrowing still remain obscure. In this study, we conducted in situ measurements quantitatively investigating the impacts of the different burrowing activities of zokors and pikas on three main GHG CO2, CH4, and N2O from an alpine meadow ecosystem in southeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Our results showed that zokor hummocks and pika burrows were sources of CO2 and N2O and sinks of CH4. Zokors burrowing increased N2O in the atmosphere, decreased CO2, and enhanced CH4 absorbing, while pikas burrowing increased N2O in the atmosphere and enhanced CH4 absorbing. Considering the controversial role of fossorial vertebrates in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, this study also shed lights on effective management of animal activities with the aim of stabilizing or increasing ecosystem carbon sequestration.

RESUMO

Rhenium diboride is an established superhard compound that can scratch diamond and can be readily synthesized under ambient pressure. Here, we demonstrate two synergistic ways to further enhance the already high yield strength of ReB2. The first approach builds on previous reports where tungsten is doped into ReB2 at concentrations up to 48 at. %, forming a rhenium/tungsten diboride solid solution (Re0.52W0.48B2). In the second approach, the composition of both materials is maintained, but the particle size is reduced to the nanoscale (40-150 nm). Bulk samples were synthesized by arc melting above 2500 °C, and salt flux growth at ∼850 °C was used to create nanoscale materials. In situ radial X-ray diffraction was then performed under high pressures up to ∼60 GPa in a diamond anvil cell to study mechanical properties including bulk modulus, lattice strain, and strength anisotropy. The differential stress for both Re0.52W0.48B2 and nano ReB2 (n-ReB2) was increased compared to bulk ReB2. In addition, the lattice-preferred orientation of n-ReB2 was experimentally measured. Under non-hydrostatic compression, n-ReB2 exhibits texture characterized by a maximum along the [001] direction, confirming that plastic deformation is primarily controlled by the basal slip system. At higher pressures, a range of other slip systems become active. Finally, both size and solid-solution effects were combined in nanoscale Re0.52W0.48B2. This material showed the highest differential stress and bulk modulus, combined with suppression of the new slip planes that opened at high pressure in n-ReB2.

RESUMO

Most migratory birds depend on stopover sites, which are essential for refueling during migration and affect their population dynamics. In the East Asian⁻Australasian Flyway (EAAF), however, the stopover ecology of migratory waterfowl is severely under-studied. The knowledge gaps regarding the timing, intensity and duration of stopover site usages prevent the development of effective and full annual cycle conservation strategies for migratory waterfowl in EAAF. In this study, we obtained a total of 33,493 relocations and visualized 33 completed spring migratory paths of five geese species using satellite tracking devices. We delineated 2,192,823 ha as the key stopover sites along the migration routes and found that croplands were the largest land use type within the stopover sites, followed by wetlands and natural grasslands (62.94%, 17.86% and 15.48% respectively). We further identified the conservation gaps by overlapping the stopover sites with the World Database on Protected Areas (PA). The results showed that only 15.63% (or 342,757 ha) of the stopover sites are covered by the current PA network. Our findings fulfil some key knowledge gaps for the conservation of the migratory waterbirds along the EAAF, thus enabling an integrative conservation strategy for migratory water birds in the flyway.

RESUMO

The conventional belief, based on the Read-Shockley model for the grain rotation mechanism, has been that smaller grains rotate more under stress due to the motion of grain boundary dislocations. However, in our high-pressure synchrotron Laue x-ray microdiffraction experiments, 70 nm nickel particles are found to rotate more than any other grain size. We infer that the reversal in the size dependence of the grain rotation arises from the crossover between the grain boundary dislocation-mediated and grain interior dislocation-mediated deformation mechanisms. The dislocation activities in the grain interiors are evidenced by the deformation texture of nickel nanocrystals. This new finding reshapes our view on the mechanism of grain rotation and helps us to better understand the plastic deformation of nanomaterials, particularly of the competing effects of grain boundary and grain interior dislocations.

RESUMO

Rhenium diboride (ReB2), containing corrugated layers of covalently bonded boron, is a superhard metallic compound with a microhardness reaching as high as 40.5 GPa (under an applied load of 0.49 N). Tungsten diboride (WB2), which takes a structural hybrid between that of ReB2 and AlB2, where half of the boron layers are planar (as in AlB2) and half are corrugated (as in ReB2), has been shown not to be superhard. Here, we demonstrate that the ReB2-type structure can be maintained for solid solutions of tungsten in ReB2 with tungsten content up to a surprisingly large limit of nearly 50 atom %. The lattice parameters for the solid solutions linearly increase along both the a- and c-axes with increasing tungsten content, as evaluated by powder X-ray and neutron diffraction. From micro- and nanoindentation hardness testing, all of the compositions within the range of 0-48 atom % W are superhard, and the bulk modulus of the 48 atom % solid solution is nearly identical to that of pure ReB2. These results further indicate that ReB2-structured compounds are superhard, as has been predicted from first-principles calculations, and may warrant further studies into additional solid solutions or ternary compounds taking this structure type.

RESUMO

In tungsten monoboride (WB), the boron atoms are linked in parallel serpentine arrays, with tungsten atoms in between. This lattice is metallic, unlike conventional covalent superhard materials such as diamond or cubic boron nitride. By selectively substituting tungsten atoms with tantalum, the Vickers hardness can be increased to 42.8 GPa, creating a new superhard metal.

RESUMO

It is well-believed that below a certain particle size, grain boundary-mediated plastic deformation (e.g., grain rotation, grain boundary sliding and diffusion) substitutes for conventional dislocation nucleation and motion as the dominant deformation mechanism. However, in situ probing of grain boundary processes of ultrafine nanocrystals during plastic deformation has not been feasible, precluding the direct exploration of the nanomechanics. Here we present the in situ texturing observation of bulk-sized platinum in a nickel pressure medium of various particle sizes from 500 nm down to 3 nm. Surprisingly, the texture strength of the same-sized platinum drops rapidly with decreasing grain size of the nickel medium, indicating that more active grain rotation occurs in the smaller nickel nanocrystals. Insight into these processes provides a better understanding of the plastic deformation of nanomaterials in a few-nanometer length scale.

RESUMO

The size of nanocrystals provides a limitation on dislocation activity and associated stress-induced deformation. Dislocation-mediated plastic deformation is expected to become inactive below a critical particle size, which has been proposed to be between 10 and 30 nanometers according to computer simulations and transmission electron microscopy analysis. However, deformation experiments at high pressure on polycrystalline nickel suggest that dislocation activity is still operative in 3-nanometer crystals. Substantial texturing is observed at pressures above 3.0 gigapascals for 500-nanometer nickel and at greater than 11.0 gigapascals for 20-nanometer nickel. Surprisingly, texturing is also seen in 3-nanometer nickel when compressed above 18.5 gigapascals. The observations of pressure-promoted texturing indicate that under high external pressures, dislocation activity can be extended down to a few-nanometers-length scale.
