RESUMO

The thickness dependence of the helical antiferromagnetic ordering temperature T(N) was studied for thin Ho metal films by resonant magnetic soft x-ray and neutron diffraction. In contrast with the Curie temperature of ferromagnets, T(N) was found to decrease with film thickness d according to [T(N)(infinity)-T(N)(d)]/T(N)(d) proportional variant (d-d(0))(-lambda(')), where lambda(') is a phenomenological exponent and d(0) is of the order of the bulk magnetic period L(b). These observations are reproduced by mean-field calculations that suggest a linear relationship between d(0) and L(b) in long-period antiferromagnets.

RESUMO

The swelling behavior of alkanethiol-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) with an average molecular weight of 2180 Da (i.e., approximately 45 ethylene glycol, EG, units) in contact with water was investigated by neutron reflectometry as a function of the morphology of the PEG-SH layer. Amorphous films at a low grafting density show significant swelling with an increase of the film thickness from approximately 25 A in the dry state to approximately 70 A in contact with D2O, which corresponds to a total water uptake of approximately 38 mass %. In contrast, quasi-crystalline monolayers exhibit only a small amount of water penetrating into the film (approximately 8 mass %) with a corresponding change of the layer thickness from approximately 110 to approximately 125 A. The water uptake per EG unit corresponds to the literature value of 1.5 for the amorphous layer and to only 0.25 in the case of the quasi-crystalline film.

RESUMO

We have investigated the magnetic order in an [Fe(2)/(VHx)(13)] x 200 superlattice as a function of temperature and hydrogen content in the vanadium layers. A J(radially)-T magnetic phase diagram was established where J(radially) denotes the interlayer exchange coupling between adjacent Fe planes. We propose that Fe/V superlattices, in which the ratio of interlayer to intralayer coupling can be tuned continuously and reversibly via hydrogen in the nonmagnetic vanadium, offer a new approach for the study of low-dimensional magnetism and crossover effects near the transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic order.

RESUMO

We have experimentally demonstrated that planar neutron waveguides can be used as resonant beam couplers to efficiently produce a coherent neutron line source with cross sections in the submicrometer range. The Fraunhofer far-field diffraction pattern of the first three resonance modes was measured and found to be in excellent agreement with the theoretical model. Our measurements confirm that an excited exiting mode is fully coherent in the direction perpendicular to the surface of the thin-film coupler and may therefore be used for applications of interest to a broad user community in biochemical and semiconductor nanosciences such as static and time-resolved coherent speckle experiments or phase-contrast imaging.
