RESUMO

Since there was no French tool adapted to the reality of people with autism enrolled in a work integration program in Quebec, we have modified the Profile of Rehabilitation and Adaptation in a Work Context for People with Intellectual Disabilities according to the scientific literature on autism. Content validity (n=17) and applicability (n=5) were done with success. Result is an Excel compiler containing 3 informative tabs, 10 tabs on the dimensions of work rehabilitation (59 items) and 4 tabs used to compile the results. Socio-professional practicians are welcomed to use this new tool to pursue construct and internal validity.

RESUMO

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Estrogens are suspected to have a negative effect on pulmonary function in women with cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of our study was to investigate, in a CF adolescent population, the effect of hormonal contraception (HC) on lung function by assessing the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), the number of exacerbations of pulmonary condition, and antibiotic use. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, INTERVENTIONS, AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We conducted a cohort retrospective chart review of girls from age 13 to 18 years old who were followed in the CF clinic of a university hospital center. Wilcoxon rank sum test with continuity correction, 2-sample t test, conditional test of Poisson rates, and χ2 test were conducted to identify differences in results between adolescents with or without use of HC for the following outcomes: FEV1, use of antibiotics by nebulizer, and hospital admission for exacerbations of pulmonary condition. RESULTS: Among 127 adolescents, 64/127 (50.4%) took HC; 12/127 (9%) continuously had been taking HC over 3 years. For girls taking HC for more than 3 years, FEV1 at 18 years old was significantly higher than for girls who had never taken HC (85.17% vs 71.05%; P = .043). However, there was no difference in the number of hospital admissions for exacerbation of pulmonary condition between these 2 groups (P = .057). There was no difference between HC vs non-HC users in the percent of patients taking antibiotics by nebulizer over the 6 years of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that in adolescents with CF, HC has no deleterious effects on the FEV1. Further prospective studies could be done to confirm these results.

RESUMO

Tau hyperphosphorylation is a major neuropathological hallmark of many neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Several anesthetics have been shown previously to induced marked tau hyperphosphorylation. Although the ketamine/xylazine mixture is one of the most commonly used anesthetic agents in animal research and veterinary practice, the effect of this anesthetic agent on tau phosphorylation still remains to be determined. Here, we found that ketamine-/xylazine-induced a rapid and robust hyperphosphorylation of tau in a dose-dependent manner under normothermic and hypothermic conditions in mice. When used together, ketamine and xylazine exerted a synergistic action on tau phosphorylation most strongly not only on epitopes S396 and S262, but also on other residues (T181, and S202/T205). We observed that activation of the calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is the major upstream molecular event leading to tau hyperphosphorylation following ketamine/xylazine anesthesia in mice. Moreover, we observed that intracerebroventricular injection of the selective CaMKII inhibitor KN93 attenuated tau hyperphosphorylation. Since ketamine/xylazine also had a marked impact on other key molecular signaling pathways involving the MAP/microtubule affinity-regulating kinase (MARK), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), and glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3), our study calls for high caution and careful monitoring when using this anesthetic agent in laboratory animal settings across all fields of biological sciences in order to avoid artifactual results.

RESUMO

Research suggests that being bilingual results in advantages on executive control processes and disadvantages on language tasks relative to monolinguals. Furthermore, the executive function advantage is thought to be larger in older than younger adults, suggesting that bilingualism may buffer against age-related changes in executive function. However, there are potential confounds in some of the previous research, as well as inconsistencies in the literature. The goal of the current investigation was to examine the presence of a bilingual advantage in executive control and a bilingual disadvantage on language tasks in the same sample of young and older monolingual anglophones, monolingual francophones, and French/English bilinguals. Participants completed a series of executive function tasks, including a Stroop task, a Simon task, a sustained attention to response task (SART), the Wisconsin Card Sort Test (WCST), and the digit span subtest of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, and language tasks, including the Boston Naming Test (BNT), and category and letter fluency. The results do not demonstrate an unequivocal advantage for bilinguals on executive function tasks and raise questions about the reliability, robustness and/or specificity of previous findings. The results also did not demonstrate a disadvantage for bilinguals on language tasks. Rather, they suggest that there may be an influence of the language environment. It is concluded that additional research is required to fully characterize any language group differences in both executive function and language tasks.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Signs of androgen excess are common complaints of adolescents and young adults. Rapid onset/progression of hyperandrogenism or virilization should prompt further investigation to exclude an androgen-secreting tumor. CASE: We report the case of an obese young adolescent girl who presented with hirsutism, deepened voice, oligomenorrhea, marked acanthosis nigricans, and rapidly increasing testosterone and insulin levels. Imaging studies were negative for both ovarian and adrenal masses. She was successfully treated with continuous combined oral contraceptives. Investigation, treatment, and outcome are reviewed. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates that patients with PCOS may present with a testosterone > 200 ng/dL and that severe hyperinsulinemia can be associated with rapid progression of hyperandrogenism.
