RESUMO

Comparisons of perceptions during four menstrual phases were collected with 6 regularly menstruating athletes who responded to a semantic differentiation scale containing descriptive polar terms. Analysis indicated a significantly lower mean score on perceived strength and speed during the progestational phase and a lower mean for power during menstrual and progestational phases.

RESUMO

A single bubble of air in water can emit pulses of blue-white light that have durations of less than 50 ps while it is oscillating in an acoustic standing wave. The emission is called sonoluminescence. A knowledge of the bubble diameter throughout the cycle, and in particular near the time of sonoluminescence emission, can provide important information about the phenomenon. A new Mie scattering technique is developed to determine the size of the bubble through its expansion and collapse during the acoustic cycle. The technique does not rely on an independent means of calibration or on accurate measurements of the scattered intensity.

RESUMO

The role of hemispheric processing for visual features was explored by tachistoscopically presenting subjects with stimulus displays composed of the letter I, displays in which a single T was embedded in an array of I's, or displays in which the letter O was embedded in an array of I's. The number of array elements was also manipulated (4, 16, or 36) to assess the effects of display size on featural detection for each visual field. Subjects verbally indicated whether array elements were all the same, or whether a T or O was present. Hemispheric error rates varied as a function of the type of letter to be detected, with left-hemisphere presentations producing superior performance for the detection of T's, right-hemisphere presentations yielding superior performance for the detection of O's, and Same displays demonstrating hemispheric patterns consistent with these results. The findings suggest that the analysis of perceptual features during visual stimulus processing may determine hemispheric outcomes in a variety of task situations.

RESUMO

Fractures of the proximal humerus, which can not be kept in place after reposition--and therefore not acceptable for conservative treatment--can be sufficiently fixed by a thin and long Rush-pin percutaneously introduced. So the damaged arm can be moved early. No inflammation and no pseudarthrosis was observed in 124 cases. The follow up examination of 98 patients after 6 to 12 months revealed good results. In 4 children the fractured neck of the humerus could not be reposed into a proper position (Interposition of periosteum and joint capsule). After open reduction fixation was performed by Kirschner's wires. We observed fast and complete healing in all cases.

RESUMO

A new method of generating the Bessel functions and ratios of Bessel functions necessary for Mie calculations is presented. Accuracy is improved while eliminating the need for extended precision word lengths or large storage capability. The algorithm uses a new technique of evaluating continued fractions that starts at the beginning rather than the tail and has a built-in error check. The continued fraction representations for both spherical Bessel functions and ratios of Bessel functions of consecutive order are presented.
