A retrospective study of cane toad (Rhinella marina) toxicity in 190 domestic cats in Southeastern Queensland: Clinical presentations, treatments, and outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To report the clinical presentations, treatments and outcomes of toad toxicity in domestic cats in Southeastern Queensland, Australia. METHODS: This report describes a retrospective study of 190 cases of cane toad (Rhinella marina) toxicity in cats in south-eastern Queensland, Australia. All cases were presented for veterinary treatment between 2011 and 2020 at four specialist veterinary emergency centres in Southeast Queensland, Australia. Cane toad toxicity was diagnosed based on a history of exposure and clinical signs. RESULTS: Domestic short-hair breeds accounted for 53.6% of the cases. Presentation was seasonal with the highest incidence over the warmer months of the year (November - March). Hypersalivation was described in 96.3% (183/190), tachypnoea in 34.2% (65/190) and altered behaviour in 18.4% (35/190) of cases. Seizures occurred in 1% of cases. Of the 190 cases, 6.3% (12/190) were hospitalised and 0.5% (1/190) were euthanised and overall 99.5% (189/190) survived hospital discharge. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Cane toad toxicity is relatively common in cats in Southeast Queensland and following buccal lavage the prognosis for recovery was excellent.

Nanoscale dielectric grating polarizers tuned to 4.43†eV for ultraviolet polarimetry.

Transmissive dielectric wire grid polarizers tuned to 4.43 eV (Mg II line, 280 nm), an important diagnostic line for solar physics, are presented in this communication. The polarizers are based on TiO2 gratings and designed with a period of ∼140 nm (7143 lines/mm), 40 nm line width (duty cycle of 0.286), and 100 nm line height. Several gratings are fabricated through electron beam lithography combined with reactive ion etching, whereby two parameters in the nanofabrication process are explored: e-beam dosage on the photoresist and TiO2 etching time. Polarization of samples is optically characterized using a spectroscopic ellipsometer in transmission mode, achieving the best result with an extinction ratio of ∼109 and a transmittance of 16.4% at the target energy of 4.43 eV. The shape of the gratings is characterized through atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the measured AFM profiles are distorted by the tip geometry, hence a simple deconvolution procedure is implemented to retrieve the real profile. By analysing the AFM and SEM profiles, we find that the real shapes of the different gratings are close to the design, but with a larger duty cycle than the intended value. With the real grating geometry, an improved model of the best sample was built with a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method that matches the result obtained through optical characterization.

Self-weighing and simple dietary advice for overweight and obese pregnant women to reduce obstetric complications without impact on quality of life: a randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of serial weighing and dietary advice compared with standard antenatal care on obstetric outcomes. DESIGN: Randomised controlled clinical trial. SETTING: Australian tertiary obstetric hospital. POPULATION: Three hundred and eighty-two overweight or obese non-diabetic pregnant women at less than 20 weeks gestation with a singleton pregnancy. METHODS: Women were randomised to targeted, serial self-weighing and simple dietary advice, (intervention), or standard antenatal care (control). MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: The primary outcome was a reduction in a composite of obstetric complications: gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, diabetes, assisted or caesarean birth, shoulder dystocia, severe perineal trauma, postpartum haemorrhage and maternal high dependency care. Secondary outcomes were gestational weight gain at 36 weeks' gestation, quality of life (QOL) and maternal serum levels of 28-week leptin, adiponectin and C-reactive protein (CRP). RESULTS: There was no difference in the rate of the primary composite outcome of obstetric complications: 124/184 (67% control), 124/187 (66% intervention) [relative risk 0.98 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.85-1.14)]. There was no difference in mean gestational weight gain [-0.9 kg (95% CI -2.0, 0.25)], QOL or leptin, adiponectin or CRP levels between intervention and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: This low-cost, pragmatic intervention failed to prevent obstetric complications or modify maternal biochemistry or gestational weight gain in overweight or obese pregnant women. Participation in the study did not impair participants' QOL. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: Serial self-weighing and dietary advice failed to reduce obstetric complications in overweight pregnant women.

Initial experience with clozapine in Woodbridge Hospital.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and side-effect profile of the atypical neuroleptic clozapine in local Asian patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. METHOD: Patients were treated with 12 weeks of clozapine after undergoing a washout of all previous neuroleptics. They were assessed weekly on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Clinical Global Impression (CGI) and the Simpson-Angus Scale for Extrapyramidal Side-Effects. RESULTS: Clinical improvement (according to criteria established a priori) at study end point was shown in 78.9% of the patients. There was no statistical difference in the incidence of the extrapyramidal side-effects at starting and end points. The mean daily dosage was 356.6 mg. The most common adverse effect was hypersalivation. CONCLUSION: Clozapine is effective and well tolerated in local patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

Myths and realities of electroconvulsive therapy.

With its introduction in 1938 electroconvulsive therapy became a powerful form of treatment for depressive illness and the major psychoses. Its use over the years has declined with the development of effective antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs. It still has a place in psychiatric treatment where urgent resolution of symptoms is indicated in certain conditions. The mechanism by which it exerts its therapeutic effect remains unknown.

A comparative study of pipothiazine palmitate and fluphenazine decanoate in the maintenance of remission of schizophrenia.

This paper reports a randomized, controlled, partially-blinded, flexible dose, parallel group, comparative study of the efficacy and tolerance of pipothiazine palmitate and fluphenazine decanoate in patients in remission from Schizophrenia over a 28 week period. The results show that pipothiazine palmitate is at least as efficacious and well-tolerated as fluphenazine decanoate in preventing relapses from maintained Schizophrenia.
