BACKGROUND: Women at middle age are puzzled by a series of menopausal disturbances, can be distressing and considerably affect the personal, social and work lives. We aim to estimate the global prevalence of nineteen menopausal symptoms among middle-aged women by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Comprehensive search was performed in multiple databases from January, 2000 to March, 2023 for relevant studies. Random-effect model with double-arcsine transformation was used for data analysis. RESULTS: A total of 321 studies comprised of 482,067 middle-aged women were included for further analysis. We found varied prevalence of menopausal symptoms, with the highest prevalence of joint and muscular discomfort (65.43%, 95% CI 62.51-68.29) and lowest of formication (20.5%, 95% CI 13.44-28.60). Notably, South America shared dramatically high prevalence in a sort of menopausal symptoms including depression and urogenital symptoms. Besides, countries with high incomes (49.72%) had a significantly lower prevalence of hot flashes than those with low (65.93%), lower-middle (54.17%), and upper-middle (54.72%, p < 0.01), while personal factors, such as menopausal stage, had an influence on most menopausal symptoms, particularly in vaginal dryness. Prevalence of vagina dryness in postmenopausal women (44.81%) was 2-fold higher than in premenopausal women (21.16%, p < 0.01). Furthermore, a remarkable distinction was observed between body mass index (BMI) and prevalence of sleep problems, depression, anxiety and urinary problems. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of menopausal symptoms affected by both social and personal factors which calls for attention from general public.

The effects of soil pH variations induced by submergence/drainage and biochar application on soil cadmium (Cd) availability to different rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties are not well understood. This study aims to investigate the possible reasons for available Cd(II) reduction in paddy soil as influenced by biochar and to determine Cd(II) absorption and translocation rates in different parts of various rice varieties. A pot experiment in a greenhouse using four japonica and four indica rice varieties was conducted in Cd(II) contaminated paddy soil with peanut straw biochar. The results indicated that the submerging led to an increase in soil pH due to the consumption of protons (H+) by the reduction reactions of iron/manganese (Fe/Mn) oxides and sulfate (SO42-) and thus the decrease in soil available Cd(II) contents. However, the drainage decreased soil pH due to the release of protons during the oxidation of Fe2+, Mn2+, and S2- and thus the increase in soil available Cd(II) contents. Application of the biochar increased soil pH during soil submerging and inhibited the decline in soil pH during soil drainage, and thus decreased soil available Cd(II) contents under both submerging and drainage conditions. The indica rice varieties absorbed more Cd(II) in their roots and accumulated higher amounts of Cd(II) in their shoots and grains than the japonica rice varieties. The Cd(II) sensitive varieties exhibited a greater absorption and translocation rate of Cd(II) compared to the tolerant varieties of both indica and japonica rice. Biochar inhibited the absorption and accumulation of Cd(II) in the rice varieties, which ultimately lowered the Cd(II) contents in rice grains below the national food safety limit (0.2 mg kg-1). Overall, planting japonica rice varieties in Cd(II) polluted paddy soils combined with the use of biochar can effectively reduce Cd(II) content in rice grains which protects human health against Cd(II) toxicity.

Importance: Overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence is a global health issue associated with adverse outcomes throughout the life course. Objective: To estimate worldwide prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents from 2000 to 2023 and to assess potential risk factors for and comorbidities of obesity. Data Sources: MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane. Study Selection: The inclusion criteria were: (1) studies provided adequate information, (2) diagnosis based on body mass index cutoffs proposed by accepted references, (3) studies performed on general population between January 2000 and March 2023, (4) participants were younger than 18 years. Data Extraction and Synthesis: The current study was performed in accordance with the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model with Free-Tukey double arcsine transformation was used for data analysis. Sensitivity analysis, meta-regression, and subgroup analysis of obesity among children and adolescents were conducted. Main Outcomes and Measures: Prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents assessed by World Health Organization, International Obesity Task Force, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or other national references. Results: A total of 2033 studies from 154 different countries or regions involving 45 890 555 individuals were included. The overall prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents was 8.5% (95% CI 8.2-8.8). We found that the prevalence varied across countries, ranging from 0.4% (Vanuatu) to 28.4% (Puerto Rico). Higher prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents was reported in countries with Human Development Index scores of 0.8 or greater and high-income countries or regions. Compared to 2000 to 2011, a 1.5-fold increase in the prevalence of obesity was observed in 2012 to 2023. Substantial differences in rates of obesity were noted when stratified by 11 risk factors. Children and adolescents with obesity had a high risk of depression and hypertension. The pooled estimates of overweight and excess weight in children and adolescents were 14.8% (95% CI 14.5-15.1) and 22.2% (95% CI 21.6-22.8), respectively. Conclusions and Relevance: This study's findings indicated 1 of 5 children or adolescents experienced excess weight and that rates of excess weight varied by regional income and Human Development Index. Excess weight among children and adolescents was associated with a mix of inherent, behavioral, environmental, and sociocultural influences that need the attention and committed intervention of primary care professionals, clinicians, health authorities, and the general public.

AIM: To explore the molecular mechanism underlying the protective effect of hypothermic perfusion on the corneal endothelium during phacoemulsification. METHODS: Phacoemulsification was performed on New Zealand white rabbits. Perfusate at different temperatures was used during the operation, and the aqueous humor was collected for proteomic sequencing after the operation. Corneal endothelial cell injury was simulated by a corneal endothelial cell oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model in vitro. Flow cytometry and evaluation of fluorescent LC3B puncta were used to detect apoptosis and autophagy, and western blotting was used to detect protein expression. RESULTS: A total of 381 differentially expressed proteins were identified between the two groups. In vitro, 4 ℃ hypothermia significantly reduced apoptosis and promoted autophagy. Apoptosis increased after autophagy was inhibited by 3-Methyladenine (3-MA). Furthermore, adiponectin (ADIPOQ) knockdown inhibited phospho-AMPK and blocked the protective effect of hypothermia on corneal endothelial cells. CONCLUSIONS: We investigated the differential expression of proteins between the hypothermia group and normothermia group by proteomics. Moreover, hypothermia-induced ADIPOQ can reduce apoptosis by promoting AMPK-mediated autophagy.

To explore the potential mechanism in Cuscuta sinensis on diarrhea-type irritable bowel syndrome using network pharmacology and molecular docking techniques. First, the active components and related targets of Cuscuta were found setting oral utilization >30% and drug-like properties greater than or equal to 0.18 as filter information from TCMSP database. The targets of diarrheal irritable bowel syndrome were compiled by searching DrugBank, GeneCards, OMIM, PharmGkb, and TTD databases. The intersections of drugs and targets related to the disease were taken for gene ontology enrichment and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes enrichment analyses, to elucidate the potential molecular mechanisms and pathway information of Cuscuta sinensis for the treatment of diarrheal irritable bowel syndrome. The protein-protein interaction network was constructed by using the STRING database and visualized with Cytoscape_v3.10.0 software to find the protein-protein interaction network core At last, molecular docking was performed to validate the combination of active compounds with the core target. The target information of Cuscuta and diarrhea-type irritable bowel syndrome was compiled, which can be resulted in 11 active compounds such as quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, ß-sitosterol, and another 17 core targets such as TP53, IL6, AKT1, IL1B, TNF, EGFR, etc, whose Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes was enriched in the pathways of lipids and atherosclerosis, chemical carcinogenesis-receptor activation, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis, etc. Docking demonstrated that the core targets and the active compounds were able to be better combined. Cuscuta chinensis may exert preventive effects on diarrhea-type irritable bowel syndrome by reducing intestinal inflammation, protecting intestinal mucosa, and playing an important role in antioxidant response through multi-targets and multi-pathways.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a severe complication that can occur after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The timely and accurate diagnosis of PJI is the key to treatment. This study investigated the diagnostic value of platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), platelet count to mean platelet volume ratio (PVR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) in PJI after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the patients who underwent revision hip or knee arthroplasty at our Institute between June 2015 and June 2020. Of the 187 patients reviewed, 168 were included in the study. According to the diagnostic criteria of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS), 58 patients were in the PJI group, and 110 patients were in the aseptic loosening (AL) group. We recorded and compared the preoperative peripheral blood white blood cell (WBC) count, platelet count (PLT), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR in both groups. The diagnostic performance of the WBC, PLT, PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR individually and in combination with the ESR and CRP for PJI diagnosis was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were calculated. RESULTS: Compared to those in the AL group, the mean WBC, PLT, ESR, CRP, PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR in the peripheral blood of the PJI group were significantly greater (P < 0.05). The analysis of the ROC curve revealed that the ESR, CRP, PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR in peripheral blood had moderate effectiveness in diagnosing PJI, with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.760 (95% CI: 0.688-0.823), 0.758 (95% CI: 0.687-0.821), 0.714 (95% CI: 0.639-0.781), 0.709 (95% CI: 0.634-0.777), 0.723 (95% CI: 0.649-0.789), and 0.728 (95% CI: 0.654-0.793), respectively. Conversely, the WBC and PLT counts demonstrated poor diagnostic value for PJI, with AUC values of 0.578 (95% CI: 0.499-0.653) and 0.694 (95% CI: 0.619-0.763), respectively. The results of the prediction model calculations revealed that the combined AUC of the WBC, PLT, ESR, CRP, PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR was the highest at 0.853 (95% CI, 0.790-0.909), indicating good value in the diagnosis of PJI, with a sensitivity of 82.8% and a specificity of 72.7%. Moreover, the novel composite of parameters improved the accuracy and reliability in diagnosing PJI compared to the traditional biomarkers ESR and CRP (P = 0.015). CONCLUSION: Our study suggested that the diagnostic value of the peripheral blood biomarkers PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR for diagnosing PJI is limited and not superior to that of the ESR or CRP. However, when the WBC, PLT, ESR, CRP, PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR are combined, the diagnostic performance of PJI in TJA patients can be improved.

The rapid increase in soil acidity coupled with the deleterious effects of cadmium (Cd) toxicity had led to a decline in worldwide agricultural production. Rice absorbs and accumulates Cd(II) from polluted paddy soils, increasing human health risks throughout the food chain. A 35-day hydroponic experiment with four japonica and four indica (two each of them tolerant and sensitive cultivars) was conducted in this study to investigate the adsorption and absorption of Cd(II) by rice roots as related with surface chemical properties of the roots. The results showed that the three chemical forms of exchangeable, complexed, and precipitated Cd(II) increased with the increase in Cd(II) concentration for all rice cultivars. The roots of indica rice cultivars carried more negative charges and had greater functional groups and thus adsorbed more exchangeable and complexed Cd(II) than those of japonica rice cultivars. This led to more absorption of Cd(II) by the roots and greater toxicity of Cd(II) to the roots of indica rice cultivars and more inhibition of Cd(II) stress on the growth of the roots and whole plants of indica rice cultivars compared with japonica rice cultivars, which was one of the main reasons for more declines in the biomass and length of indica rice roots and shoots than japonica rice cultivars. Cd(II) stress showed more toxicity to the sensitive rice cultivars and thus greater inhibition on the growth of the cultivars due to more exchangeable and complexed Cd(II) adsorbed by their roots induced by more negative charges and functional groups on the roots compared with tolerant rice cultivar for both indica and japonica, which resulted in greater decreases in the biomass and length of roots and shoots as well as chlorophyll contents of the sensitive cultivars than the tolerant cultivars. The roots of sensitive rice cultivars also absorbed more Cd(II) than tolerant rice cultivars due to the same reasons as above. These findings will provide useful references for the safe utilization and health risk prevention of Cd-contaminated paddy fields.

Diminished hepatocyte regeneration is a key feature of acute and chronic liver diseases and after extended liver resections, resulting in the inability to maintain or restore a sufficient functional liver mass. Therapies to restore hepatocyte regeneration are lacking, making liver transplantation the only curative option for end-stage liver disease. Here, we report on the structure-based development and characterization (nuclear magnetic resonance [NMR] spectroscopy) of first-in-class small molecule inhibitors of the dual-specificity kinase MKK4 (MKK4i). MKK4i increased liver regeneration upon hepatectomy in murine and porcine models, allowed for survival of pigs in a lethal 85% hepatectomy model, and showed antisteatotic and antifibrotic effects in liver disease mouse models. A first-in-human phase I trial (European Union Drug Regulating Authorities Clinical Trials [EudraCT] 2021-000193-28) with the clinical candidate HRX215 was conducted and revealed excellent safety and pharmacokinetics. Clinical trials to probe HRX215 for prevention/treatment of liver failure after extensive oncological liver resections or after transplantation of small grafts are warranted.

Traditional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors rely heavily on the use of plasmonic noble metals, which have limitations due to their high cost and lack of physical and chemical stability. Hence, it is imperative to explore new materials as SERS platforms that can withstand high temperatures and harsh conditions. In this study, the SERS effect of molybdenum boride ceramic powders is presented with an enhancement factor of 5 orders, which is comparable to conventional noble metal substrates. The molybdenum boride powders synthesized through liquid-phase precursor and carbothermal reduction have ß-MoB, MoB2 , and Mo2 B5 phases. Among these phases, ß-MoB demonstrates the most significant SERS activity, with a detection limit for rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules of 10-9  m. The impressive SERS enhancement can be attributed to strong molecule interactions and prominent charge interactions between R6G and the various phases of molybdenum boride, as supported by theoretical calculations. Additionally, Raman measurements show that the SERS activity remains intact after exposure to high temperature, strong acids, and alkalis. This research introduces a novel molybdenum boride all-ceramic SERS platform capable of functioning in harsh conditions, thereby showing the promising of boride ultrahigh-temperature ceramics for detection applications in extreme environments.

Transcriptome represents the expression levels of many genes in a sample and has been widely used in biological research and clinical practice. Researchers usually focused on transcriptomic biomarkers with differential representations between a phenotype group and a control group of samples. This study presented a multitask graph-attention network (GAT) learning framework to learn the complex inter-genic interactions of the reference samples. A demonstrative reference model was pre-trained on the healthy samples (HealthModel), which could be directly used to generate the model-based quantitative transcriptional regulation (mqTrans) view of the independent test transcriptomes. The generated mqTrans view of transcriptomes was demonstrated by prediction tasks and dark biomarker detection. The coined term "dark biomarker" stemmed from its definition that a dark biomarker showed differential representation in the mqTrans view but no differential expression in its original expression level. A dark biomarker was always overlooked in traditional biomarker detection studies due to the absence of differential expression. MOTIVATION: Predicting molecular properties is a pivotal task in various scientific domains, including drug discovery, material science, and computational chemistry. This problem is often hindered by the lack of annotated data and imbalanced class distributions, which pose significant challenges in developing accurate and robust predictive models. RESULTS: This study tackles these issues by employing pretrained molecular models within a few-shot learning framework. A novel dynamic contrastive loss function is utilized to further improve model performance in the situation of class imbalance. The proposed MolFeSCue framework not only facilitates rapid generalization from minimal samples, but also employs a contrastive loss function to extract meaningful molecular representations from imbalanced datasets. Extensive evaluations and comparisons of MolFeSCue and state-of-the-art algorithms have been conducted on multiple benchmark datasets, and the experimental data demonstrate our algorithm's effectiveness in molecular representations and its broad applicability across various pretrained models. Our findings underscore MolFeSCues potential to accelerate advancements in drug discovery. RNA modification, N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C), is enzymatically catalyzed by N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10) and plays an essential role across tRNA, rRNA, and mRNA. It influences various cellular functions, including mRNA stability and rRNA biosynthesis. Wet-lab detection of ac4C modification sites is highly resource-intensive and costly. Therefore, various machine learning and deep learning techniques have been employed for computational detection of ac4C modification sites. The known ac4C modification sites are limited for training an accurate and stable prediction model. This study introduces GANSamples-ac4C, a novel framework that synergizes transfer learning and generative adversarial network (GAN) to generate synthetic RNA sequences to train a better ac4C modification site prediction model. Comparative analysis reveals that GANSamples-ac4C outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in identifying ac4C sites. Moreover, our result underscores the potential of synthetic data in mitigating the issue of data scarcity for biological sequence prediction tasks. Another major advantage of GANSamples-ac4C is its interpretable decision logic. Multi-faceted interpretability analyses detect key regions in the ac4C sequences influencing the discriminating decision between positive and negative samples, a pronounced enrichment of G in this region, and ac4C-associated motifs. Field rapid determination of soil accessible Cr(Ⅵ) is of great significance for on-site assessment and decision-making about the health risks of contaminated sites. When the thickness of solutions with various concentrations of Cr(Ⅵ) is constant, there would be a quantitative relationship between the chromogenic difference of Cr(Ⅵ) solutions and the concentration of Cr(Ⅵ). The chromogenic difference could be described by Red (R), Green (G), Blue (B) values. Based on the chromogenic reaction between 1,5-diphenylcarbazide and Cr(Ⅵ), this study first established the calibration curve between the chromogenic difference and the concentration of Cr(Ⅵ) in standard solution with or without 0.01 M CaCl2, using an RGB color sensor. This is the subsequent determination basis of the method for rapidly assessing accessible Cr(Ⅵ) in the field (M-RGB). Then, the concentration of accessible Cr(Ⅵ) of contaminated soil with "hand-shaking + standing" field extraction method was compared with "end-over-end shaking" laboratory extraction method. Finally, the accessible Cr(Ⅵ) of contaminated soil extractants was determined via M-RGB integrating the field extraction method. Results indicated there was a highly significant linear relationship between colorimetric difference value (∆E) and Cr(Ⅵ) concentration in the range of 0.1-3 mg/L (R2 > 0.99, P < 0.01), based on the Euclidean formula for calculating ∆E. The "hand-shaking + standing" field extraction method was effective in obtaining accessible Cr(Ⅵ) extractants with or without 0.01 M CaCl2, with the high extraction efficiency within 100±1%. The concentrations of accessible Cr(Ⅵ) in various polluted soils determined by M-RGB were consistent with that determined by the ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, with the relative error within ±5%, and the relative standard deviation ≤ 20%. The spiked recovery experiments showed that the recovery of M-RGB was between 95% and 105%, which means M-RGB could realize the trace analysis for accessible Cr(Ⅵ) in the field.

Field rapid determination of soil accessible Cu(Ⅱ) was important for environmental safety and human health risk assessment. In this study, an inexpensive red, green, and blue (RGB) color sensor was used for quantitative color difference analysis of the colored solution for soil accessible Cu(Ⅱ) with bis-cyclohexanone oxalydihydrazone as color reagent to develop a new method for analyzing soil accessible under field conditions. First, the calibration curve for RGB color sensor method was established in the standard solutions of Cu(II). Then the "hand shaking + standing" field extraction method for accessible Cu(Ⅱ) was developed. Finally, the method was applied in contaminated soils in the laboratory and in the field, and set the values determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) as the standard ones. Results indicated that in the range of 0.1-5 mg L-1 Cu(II), the RGB Euclidean chromogenic difference values were directly linear correlated with the concentration of Cu(II) (R2 > 0.999). The interference of Fe(Ⅲ) and Mn(Ⅱ) could be eliminated by adding citric acid. The "hand shaking + standing" field extraction method could effectively extract the accessible Cu(Ⅱ) from soil with the high extraction rates. The concentrations of accessible Cu(II) in various polluted soils determined by RGB color sensor method were consistent with that determined by AAS, with the relative error within ±5%, the relative standard deviation ≤ 20%. The recovery of Cu(II) in RGB color sensor method was between 97% and 105%, which could meet the requirements of trace analysis of accessible Cu(Ⅱ) in the field. The high accuracy and precision of RGB color sensor method was reconfirmed in the rapid field quantitative assessment of soil accessible Cu(Ⅱ). Due to that the RGB color sensor was low cost, rechargeable, portable, mobile, ambient light resistant, the method would have a great potential for the determination of accessible Cu(Ⅱ) in contaminated soils.

Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) can immobilize metals and reduce their bioavailability. However, little is known about the immobilization mechanism of Cd in the presence of soil cations and the triggered gene expression and metabolic pathways in paddy soil. Thus, microcosmic experiments were conducted to study the fractionation transformation of Cd and metatranscriptome analysis. Results showed that bioavailable Cd decreased from 0.62 to 0.29 mg/kg after 330 d due to the MICP immobilization. This was ascribed to the increase in carbonate bound, Fe-Mn oxides bound, and residual Cd. The underlying immobilization mechanisms could be attributed to the formation of insoluble Cd-containing precipitates, the complexation and lattice substitution with carbonate and Fe, Mn and Al (hydr)oxides, and the adsorption on functional group on extracellular polymers of cell. During the MICP immobilization process, up-regulated differential expression urease genes were significantly enriched in the paddy soil, corresponding to the arginine biosynthesis, purine metabolism and atrazine degradation. The metabolic pathway of bacterial chemotaxis, flagellum assembly, and peptidoglycan biosynthesis and the expression of cadA gene related to Cd excretion enhanced Cd resistance of soil microbiome. Therefore, this study provided new insights into the immobilization mechanisms of Cd in paddy soils through ureolysis-based MICP process.

Gut microbiota and their metabolic processes depend on the intricate interplay of gut microbiota and their metabolic processes. Bacillus licheniformis, a beneficial food supplement, has shown promising effects on stabilizing gut microbiota and metabolites. However, the precise mechanisms underlying these effects remain elusive. In this study, we investigated the impact of polysaccharide-producing B. licheniformis as a dietary supplement on the gut microbiome and metabolites through a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), histological analysis, high-throughput sequencing (HTS), and metabolomics. Our findings revealed that the B. licheniformis-treated group exhibited significantly increased jejunal goblet cells. Moreover, gut microbial diversity was lower in the treatment group as compared to the control, accompanied by noteworthy shifts in the abundance of specific bacterial taxa. Enrichment of Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae, and Clostridiales_bacterium contrasted with reduced levels of Campylobacterota, Proteobacteria, Parasutterella, and Helicobacter. Notably, the treatment group showed significant weight gain after 33 days, emphasizing the polysaccharide's impact on host metabolism. Delving into gut metabolomics, we discovered significant alterations in metabolites. Nine metabolites, including olprinone, pyruvic acid, and 2-methyl-3-oxopropanoate, were upregulated, while eleven, including defoslimod and voclosporin were down-regulated, shedding light on phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle), and the glucagon signaling pathway. This comprehensive multi-omics analysis offers compelling insights into the potential of B. licheniformis as a dietary polysaccharide supplement for gut health and host metabolism, promising significant implications for gut-related issues.

The mining and smelting site soils in South China present excessive Cd pollution. However, the transport behavior of Cd in the highly weathered acidic soil layer at the lead-zinc smelting site remains unclear. Here, under different conditions of simulated infiltration, the migration behavior of Cd2+ in acid smelting site soils at different depths was examined. The remodeling effect of Cd2+ migration behavior on microbial community structure and the dominant microorganisms in lead-zinc sites soils was analyzed using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons. The results revealed a specific flow rate in the range of 0.3-0.5 mL/min that the convection and dispersion have no obvious effect on Cd2+ migration. The variation of packing porosity could only influence the migration behavior by changing the average pore velocity, but cannot change the adsorption efficiency of soil particles. The Cd has stronger migration capacity under the reactivation of acidic seepage fluid. However, in the alkaline solution, the physical properties of soil, especially pores, intercept the Cd compounds, further affecting their migration capacity. The acid-site soil with high content of SOM, amorphous Fe oxides, crystalline Fe/Mn/Al oxides, goethite, and hematite has stronger ability to adsorb and retain Cd2+. However, higher content of kaolinite in acidic soil will increase the potential migration of Cd2+. Besides, the migration behavior of Cd2+ results in simplified soil microbial communities. Under Cd stress, Cd-tolerant genera (Bacteroides, Sphingomonas, Bradyrhizobium, and Corynebacterium) and bacteria with both acid-Cd tolerance (WCHB 1-84) were distinguished. The Ralstonia showed a high enrichment degree in alkaline Cd2+ infiltration solution (pH 10.0). Compared to the influence of Cd2+ stress, soil pH had a stronger ability to shape the microbial community in the soil during the process of Cd2+ migration.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounting for the vast majority. In recent years, the interaction between inflammation and tumorigenesis has become the focus of attention, which has also confirmed the importance of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) in prognosis. In this study, we explored the effects of CRP, systemic inflammatory immune index (SII), and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) on the prognosis of patients with advanced NSCLC. We conducted a retrospective study of 274 patients suffering from stage III/IV NSCLC. Among them, 224 patients served as the training set and 50 patients served as the validation set. The independent factors affecting PFS (Progression-Free Survival) and OS (Overall Survival) in the patients were analyzed by Cox regression. Our results showed that CPR (HR=1.691, P=0.004), SlI (HR=1.960, P<0.001), MLR (HR=1.578, P=0.003), CEA (HR=1.845, P=0.006), NSE (HR=2.138, P=0.003) and adrenal metastasis (HR=2.896, P<0.003) were independent factors affecting the PFS of NSCLC patients. SII (HR=1.645, P=0.004), CEA (HR=2.021, P=0.002) and brain metastasis (HR=2.899, P<0.001) were independent factors affecting the OS of NLSCL patients. The DCA curve demonstrated that the prediction model provided better clinical net benefit in predicting patients' 6-month PFS and 12-month OS under different threshold probabilities. DeLong test showed no significant difference between AUCs of SII and risk score (P>0.05). Compared with CEA, SII and risk score had higher predictive value for patients' 6-month PFS and 12-month OS (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that serum inflammatory factor SII can be used as an independent indicator to evaluate 6-month PFS and 12-month OS in patients with advanced NSCLC, and its predictive value is similar to that of the nomogram model.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a traumatic condition of the central nervous system that causes paralysis of the limbs. Micro electric fields (EF) have been implicated in a novel therapeutic approach for nerve injury repair and regeneration, but the effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived small extracellular vesicles that are induced by micro electric fields (EF-sEVs) stimulation on SCI remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether EF-sEVs have therapeutic effects a rat model of SCI. EF-sEVs and normally conditioned human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells-derived small extracellular vesicles (CON-sEVs) were collected and injected intralesionally into SCI model rats to evaluate the therapeutic effects. We detect the expression of candidate long noncoding RNA metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (lncRNA-MALAT1) in EF-sEVs and CON-sEVs. The targets and downstream effectors of lncRNA-MALAT1 were investigated using luciferase reporter assays. Using both in vivo and in vitro experiments, we demonstrated that EF-sEVs increased autophagy and decreased apoptosis after SCI, which promoted the recovery of motor function. We further confirmed that the neuroprotective effects of EF-sEVs in vitro and in vivo correlated with the presence of encapsulated lncRNA-MALAT1 in sEVs. lncRNA-MALAT1 targeted miR-22-3p via sponging, reducing miR-22-3p's suppressive effects on its target, SIRT1, and this translated into AMPK phosphorylation and increased levels of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2. Collectively, the present study identified that the lncRNA-MALAT1 in EF-sEVs plays a neuroprotective role via the miRNA-22-3p/SIRT1/AMPK axis and offers a fresh perspective and a potential therapeutic approach using sEVs to improve SCI.
