RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To introduce a three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D CNN) leveraging transfer learning for fusing PET/CT images and clinical data to predict EGFR mutation status in lung adenocarcinoma (LADC). METHODS: Retrospective data from 516 LADC patients, encompassing preoperative PET/CT images, clinical information, and EGFR mutation status, were divided into training (n = 404) and test sets (n = 112). Several deep learning models were developed utilizing transfer learning, involving CT-only and PET-only models. A dual-stream model fusing PET and CT and a three-stream transfer learning model (TS_TL) integrating clinical data were also developed. Image preprocessing includes semi-automatic segmentation, resampling, and image cropping. Considering the impact of class imbalance, the performance of the model was evaluated using ROC curves and AUC values. RESULTS: TS_TL model demonstrated promising performance in predicting the EGFR mutation status, with an AUC of 0.883 (95%CI = 0.849-0.917) in the training set and 0.730 (95%CI = 0.629-0.830) in the independent test set. Particularly in advanced LADC, the model achieved an AUC of 0.871 (95%CI = 0.823-0.919) in the training set and 0.760 (95%CI = 0.638-0.881) in the test set. The model identified distinct activation areas in solid or subsolid lesions associated with wild and mutant types. Additionally, the patterns captured by the model were significantly altered by effective tyrosine kinase inhibitors treatment, leading to notable changes in predicted mutation probabilities. CONCLUSION: PET/CT deep learning model can act as a tool for predicting EGFR mutation in LADC. Additionally, it offers clinicians insights for treatment decisions through evaluations both before and after treatment.

RESUMO

Water-based evaporative cooling is emerging as a promising technology to provide sustainable and low-cost cold to alleviate the rising global cooling demand. Given the significant and fast progress made in recent years, this review aims to provide a timely overview on the state-of-the-art material design and engineering in water-based evaporative cooling. The fundamental mechanisms and major components of three water-based evaporative cooling processes are introduced, including direct evaporative cooling, cyclic sorption-driven liquid water evaporative cooling (CSD-LWEC), and atmospheric water harvesting-based evaporative cooling (AWH-EC). The distinctive requirements on the sorbent materials in CSD-LWEC and AWH-EC are highlighted, which helps synthesize the literature information on the advanced material design and engineering for the purpose of improving cooling performance. The challenges and future outlooks on further improving the water-based evaporative cooling performance are also provided.

RESUMO

Maintaining human thermal comfort in the cold outdoors is crucial for diverse outdoor activities, e.g., sports and recreation, healthcare, and special occupations. To date, advanced clothes are employed to collect solar energy as a heat source to stand cold climates, while their dull dark photothermal coating may hinder pragmatism in outdoor environments and visual sense considering fashion. Herein, tailor-made white webs with strong photothermal effect are proposed. With the embedding of cesium-tungsten bronze (Csx WO3 ) nanoparticles (NPs) as additive inside nylon nanofibers, these webs are capable of drawing both near-infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet (UV) light in sunlight for heating. Their exceptional photothermal conversion capability enables 2.5-10.5 °C greater warmth than that of a commercial sweatshirt of six times greater thickness under different climates. Remarkably, this smart fabric can increase its photothermal conversion efficiency in a wet state. It is optimal for fast sweat or water evaporation at human comfort temperature (38.5 °C) under sunlight, and its role in thermoregulation is equally important to avoid excess heat loss in wilderness survival. Obviously, this smart web with considerable merits of shape retention, softness, safety, breathability, washability, and on-demand coloration provides a revolutionary solution to realize energy-saving outdoor thermoregulation and simultaneously satisfy the needs of fashion and aesthetics.

RESUMO

Background: Icariin presents protective effect in several kidney diseases. However, the role of icariin in contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CIAKI) is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of icariin in CIAKI, as well as exploring the underlying mechanism from the aspect of interaction between protein-coding genes and non-coding RNAs. Methods: The effect of icariin was evaluated in both in vivo and in vitro CIAKI models. Rat kidneys were collected for genome-wide sequencing. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened and visualized by R software. The function annotation of DEGs was analyzed by Metascape. By Cytoscape software, the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was constructed, and hub genes were selected. Expressions of hub genes were validated by PCR. Association of hub genes in the ceRNA network and renal function was also examined. Results: Icariin protected against CIAKI in both in vivo and in vitro models. Based on DEGs in icariin pretreated CIAKI rats, lncRNA- and circRNA-associated ceRNA networks were constructed, respectively. Function annotation showed the ceRNA networks were enriched in ERK1 and ERK2 cascade, MAPK signaling and NF-κB signaling. Further, two circRNAs, six lncRNAs, four miRNAs and nine mRNAs were selected as hub genes of the ceRNA network. Among them, eight mRNAs (Acot1, Cbwd1, Ly6i, Map3k14, Mettl2b, Nyap1, Set and Utp20) were negatively correlated with renal function, while one mRNA (Tmem44) was positively correlated with renal function. Conclusion: Icariin presented a protective effect against CIAKI. The ceRNA network, involving Acot1, Cbwd1, Ly6i, Map3k14, Mettl2, Nyap1, Set, Tmem44 and Utp20, might partially contribute to the underlying mechanism of icariin protection by regulation of ERK1 and ERK2 cascade, MAPK signaling and NF-κB signaling.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The majority of Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are overweight or obese with increased infertility and high risk of pregnancy complications. We aim to compare efficacy of metformin and exenatide on spontaneous pregnancy rate, overall pregnancy rate after assisted reproductive technology treatment (ART) and pregnancy outcomes in overweight or obese infertility PCOS. METHODS: In this long-term follow-up study, 160 overweight or obese infertility Chinese PCOS were randomized to exenatide or metformin treatment for 12 weeks. Afterward, all were treated with metformin alone until pregnancy confirmed and followed until delivery. If patients failed spontaneous pregnancy during the second 12 weeks, ART could be offered until end of 64 weeks. The primary outcome was spontaneous pregnancy rate. RESULTS: At week 24, 29.2% of women in exenatide group conceived spontaneously while 14.7% in metformin group (p = 0.03). At week 64, total pregnancy rates were 79.2% in exenatide group and 76% in metformin group without significant difference (p = 0.65). Between two groups, there was no significant difference of pregnancy outcomes (p > 0.05). A stepwise logistic regression showed that spontaneous pregnancy was positively associated with body weight reduction and HOMA-IR improvement in either group. CONCLUSION: In overweight or obese infertility Chinese PCOS, 12 weeks pregestational exenatide treatment resulted in more spontaneous pregnancy likely due to greater weight reduction and improvement of insulin resistance compared with metformin treatment without obvious benefit on overall pregnancy rate after ART or pregnancy outcomes of successful conceived women. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This clinical trial was registered at Chinese Clinical Trials Registry (ChiCTR-IIR-16008084) on 13/3/2016.

RESUMO

Hierarchical nanocomposites, which integrate electroactive materials into carbonaceous species, are significant in addressing the structural stability and electrical conductivity of electrode materials in post-lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a hierarchical nanocapsule that encapsulates Cu-doped MoS2 (Cu-MoS2) nanopetals with inner added skeletons in an organic-carbon-rich nanotube of hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY) has been developed for rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMB). Notably, both the incorporation of Cu in MoS2 and the generation of the inner added nanoboxes are developed from a dual-template of Cu-cysteine@HsGDY hybrid nanowire; the synthesis involves two morphology/composition evolutions by CuS@HsGDY intermediates both taking place sequentially in one continuous process. These Cu-doped MoS2 nanopetals with stress-release skeletons provide abundant active sites for Mg2+ storage. The microporous HsGDY enveloped with an extended π-conjugation system offers more effective electron and ion transfer channels. These advantages work together to make this nanocapsule an effective cathode material for RMB with a large reversible capacity and superior rate and cycling performance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Regulatory B cells (Bregs) play an important role in maintaining immune homeostasis and have the potential to induce tolerance. Previous work has found that Breg cells are involved in heart transplantation tolerance. However, the effect of Breg on the transplantation tolerance and the underlying mechanisms remain to be clarified. METHODS: Using a within-species heart transplantation model, we aimed to investigate the role of CD19+CD5+CD1dhigh Bregs isolated from transplanted mice in preventing transplant rejection in vivo. We also explored the effects of CD40 and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) ubiquitin ligase on Breg-mediated prolongation of survival in heart transplant (HT) mice, and the regulatory effects of downstream Cdk4 and Cdk6 proteins on dendritic cells (DCs), which clarified the function and molecular mechanism of Breg cells in HT mice. RESULTS: Our data suggest that adoptive transfer of the transplanted Bregs served as an effective tolerance-inducing mechanism in HT mice and was involved in the CD40-TRAF6 signaling pathway in DCs. Moreover, DCs collected from the Breg treated HT mice also prolonged the survival of HT mice. Furthermore, DC-specific knockout of TRAF6 diminished Breg-mediated prolongation of survival in HT mice. Interestingly, gut microbes from donors increased the survival of cardiac allografts both in both the absence and presence of Bregs but were not implicated in CD40-TRAF6 signaling. CONCLUSIONS: These findings reveal a role of Breg cells in the induction of transplantation tolerance through the blockade of the CD40-TRAF6 signaling pathway, which might be used in the treatment of HT in the clinic.

RESUMO

Metal- and halide-free, solid-state water vapor sorbents are highly desirable for water-sorption-based applications, because most of the solid sorbents suffer from low water sorption capacity caused by their rigid porosity, while the liquid sorbents are limited by their fluidity and strong corrosivity, which is caused by the halide ions. Herein, we report a novel type of highly efficient and benign polymeric sorbent, which contains no metal or halide, and has an expandable solid state when wet. A group of sorbents are synthesized by polymerizing and crosslinking the metal-free quaternary ammonium monomers followed by an ion-exchange process to replace chloride anions with benign-anions, including acetate, oxalate, and citrate. They show significantly reduced corrosivity and improved water sorption capacity. Importantly, the water sorption capacity of the acetate paired hydrogel is among the best of the literature reported hygroscopic polymers in their pure form, even though the hydrogel is crosslinked. The hydrogel-based sorbents are further used for water-sorption-driven cooling and atmospheric water harvesting applications, which show improved coefficient of performance (COP) and high freshwater production rate, respectively. The results of this work would inspire more research interest in developing better water sorbents and potentially broaden the application horizon of water-sorption-based processes towards the water-energy nexus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Finding methods to accurately predict the final infarct volumes for acute ischemic stroke patients with full or no recanalization would significantly help to evaluate the potential benefits of thrombolytic therapy. We proposed such a method by constructing a model of ensemble deep learning and machine learning using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) only. METHODS: The proposed prediction model (named AUNet) combines an adaptive linear ensemble model (ALEM) of machine learning and a deep U-Net network with an accelerated non-local module (U-NL-Net) to learn voxel-wise and spatial features, respectively. Of 40 patients with acute ischemic stroke who received thrombolytic therapy, 17 were fully recanalized, 14 were not recanalized, and nine were partially recanalized. The AUNet was separately trained for full recanalization conditions (AUNetR) and no recanalization (AUNetN) as the best and worst outcomes of thrombolysis, respectively. RESULTS: AUNet performed significantly better in predicting the final infarct volumes in both the recanalization and non-recanalization conditions [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) =0.898±0.022, recanalization; AUC =0.875±0.036, non-recanalization: Matthew's correlation coefficient (MCC) =0.863±0.033, recanalization; MCC =0.851±0.025, non-recanalization] than the fixed-thresholding method (AUC =0.776±0.021, P<0.0001, recanalization; AUC =0.692±0.023, P<0.0001, non-recanalization: MCC =0.742±0.035, recanalization; MCC =0.671±0.024, non-recanalization), the logistic regression method (AUC =0.797±0.023, P<0.003, recanalization; AUC =0.751±0.030, P<0.003, non-recanalization: MCC =0.762±0.035, recanalization; MCC =0.730±0.031, non-recanalization), and a recently developed convolutional neural network (AUC =0.814±0.013, P<0.003, recanalization; AUC =0.781±0.027, P<0.003, non-recanalization: MCC =792±0.022, recanalization; MCC =0.758±0.016, non-recanalization). The potential benefit of thrombolysis calculated from AUNetR and AUNetN showed large individual differences (from 12.81% to 239.73%). CONCLUSIONS: AUNet improved predictive accuracy over current state-of-the-art methods. More importantly, the accurate prediction of infarct volumes under different recanalization conditions may provide benefitial information for physicians in selecting suitable patients for thrombolytic therapy.

RESUMO

Solar-assisted distillation is considered promising to solve the freshwater supply for off-grid communities. In this work, a passive and flexible multistage membrane distillation (F-MSMD) device is devised to produce freshwater via solar distillation with the latent heat of vapor condensation being recycled to enhance its energy efficiency. By designing a siphon effect, source water is continuously wicked into the evaporation layer and the concentrated brine flows out of the device before reaching saturation, which successfully solves the otherwise challenge of salt accumulation inside the device. To achieve such siphon flow, the recycled paper is prepared from spent copy paper and used as the evaporation layer for efficient water delivery owing to its large pore size and high hydrophilicity. An eight-stage F-MSMD device exhibits a stable clean water production rate at 3.61 kg m-2 h-1 in the newly designed siphon-flow mode. This work provides a green route for designing a solar-assisted distillation device.

RESUMO

Volitional eye closure is observed only in conscious and awake humans, and is rare in animals. It is believed that eye closure can focus one's attention inward and facilitate activities such as meditation and mental imagery. Congenital blind individuals are also required to close their eyes for these activities. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) studies have found robust differences between the eyes-closed (EC) and eyes-open (EO) conditions in some brain regions in the sighted. This study analyzed data from 21 congenital blind individuals and 21 sighted controls by using amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) of RS-fMRI. The blind group and the sighted group shared similar pattern of differences between the EC and EO condition: ALFF was higher in the EC condition than the EO condition in the bilateral primary sensorimotor cortex, bilateral supplementary motor area, and inferior occipital cortex, while ALFF was lower in the EC condition than the EO condition in the medial prefrontal cortex, highlighting the "nature" effect on the difference between the EC and EO conditions. The results of other matrices such as fractional ALFF (fALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) showed similar patterns to that of ALFF. Moreover, no significant difference was observed between the EC-EO pattern of the two subgroups of congenital blind (i.e., with and without light perception), suggesting that the EC-EO difference is irrespective of residual light perception which reinforced the "nature" effect. We also found between-group differences, i.e., more probably "nurture effect", in the posterior insula and fusiform. Our results suggest that the acts of closing and opening the eyes are of importance for the congenital blind, and that these actions and their differences might be inherent in the nature of humans.

RESUMO

Proper disposal of industrial brine has been a critical environmental challenge. Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) brine treatment holds great promise to the brine disposal, but its application is limited by the intensive energy consumption of its crystallization process. Here we propose a new strategy that employs an advanced solar crystallizer coupled with a salt crystallization inhibitor to eliminate highly concentrated waste brine. The rationally designed solar crystallizer exhibited a high water evaporation rate of 2.42 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun illumination when treating real concentrated seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) brine (21.6 wt%). The solar crystallizer array showed an even higher water evaporation rate of 48.0 kg m-2 per day in the outdoor field test, suggesting a great potential for practical application. The solar crystallizer design and the salt crystallization inhibition strategy proposed and confirmed in this work provide a low-cost and sustainable solution for industrial brine disposal with ZLD.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the value of MRI-based radiomic model based on the radiomic features of different basal nuclei in differentiating idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) from Parkinsonian variants of multiple system atrophy (MSA-P). METHODS: Radiomics was applied to the 3T susceptibility- weighted imaging (SWI) from 102 MSA-P patients and 83 IPD patients (allocated to a training and a testing cohort, 7:3 ratio). The substantia nigra (SN), caudate nucleus (CN), putamen (PUT), globus pallidus (GP), red nucleus (RN), and subthalamic nucleus (STN) were manually segmented, and 396 features were extracted. After feature selection, support vector machine (SVM) was generated, and its predictive performance was calculated in both the training and testing cohorts using the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: Seven radiomic features were selected from the PUT, by which the SVM classifier achieved the best diagnostic performance with an AUC of 0.867 in the training cohort and an AUC of 0.862 in the testing cohort. Furthermore, the combined model, which incorporating part III of the Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRSIII) scores into radiomic features of the PUT, further improved the diagnostic performance. However, radiomic features extracted from RN, SN, GP, CN, and STN had moderate to poor diagnostic performance, with AUC values that ranged from 0.610 to 0.788 in the training cohort and 0.583 to 0.766 in the testing cohort. CONCLUSION: Radiomic features derived from the PUT had optimal value in differentiating IPD from MSA-P. A combined radiomic model, which contained radiomic features of the PUT and UPDRSIII scores, further improved performance and may represent a promising tool for distinguishing between IPD and MSA-P.

RESUMO

Efforts to combine photocatalysts with organic and inorganic adsorbents in engineered composite materials have been pursued extensively to harness sunlight for a green, sustainable regeneration of exhausted adsorbent. Recent advances combining benchmark photocatalyst, titanium dioxide (TiO2), with an inorganic adsorbent, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), have shown potential for an inorganic adsorbent-photocatalyst system but faced critical limitations in realizing practical applications: low adsorption capacity and slow, inefficient photocatalytic regeneration. This study presents an enhanced TiO2/LDH based material that demonstrates a dramatically increased efficiency for both decontamination through adsorption and subsequent solar, photocatalytic regeneration. The combination of delamination and high temperature treatment of LDH is utilized to drastically enhance the adsorption capacity toward model contaminant Methyl Orange to 1450-1459 mg/g, which is even higher than most commercial and lab-synthesized carbon-based adsorbents. Light-active plasmonic nanoparticles are employed to increase the photocatalytic regeneration performance, and experimental results show that the synthesized composite material regains above 97% of its adsorption capacity for 5 cycles of regeneration and readsorption. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate potential for the development of inorganic multifunctional adsorbents that can harness a variety of chemical reactions without the loss of adsorptivity over long-term use.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Contemporary nationwide data from mainland China on trends in mitral valve surgery are scarce. The purpose of the present study was to review a single-center experience with mitral valve surgery over a 10-year period in East China. METHODS: Between July 2009 and June 2019, 3238 consecutive patients who underwent mitral valve surgery in our center were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were evenly divided into three periods: July 2009 to October 2012 (period I), November 2012 to February 2016 (period II), March 2016 to June 2019 (period III). RESULTS: The 3238 patients included 536 (16.6%) who had mitral valve repair and 2702 (83.4%) who had mitral valve replacement. Early mortalities for mitral valve repair and mitral valve replacement were 0.2% and 0.9%, respectively. There were trends towards a higher proportion of degenerative valve lesions (24.6%, 35.8%, 54.7% in periods I, II, and III, respectively) and a lower proportion of rheumatic valve lesions (71.0%, 62.6%, 38.0%) in more recent years. The proportions of minimally invasive surgery (0.7%, 2.1%, 30.2%), mitral valve repair (8.3%, 15.4%, 27.5%), use of a bioprosthesis (10.1%, 17.0%, 23.1%), and concomitant tricuspid valve procedures (13.2%, 28.5%, 46.0%) increased dramatically, while early mortality remained constant during the 10-year period (1.0%, 0.3%, 0.9%). CONCLUSIONS: In the past 10 years, the spectrum of mitral valve disease experienced a trend towards more degenerative valve lesions and less rheumatic valve lesions in East China. Mitral valve repair, bioprostheses, tricuspid valve repair, and minimally invasive surgery have been more often applied in recent years.

RESUMO

The energy shortage and clean water scarcity are two key challenges for global sustainable development. Near half of the total global water withdrawals is consumed by power generation plants while water desalination consumes lots of electricity. Here, we demonstrate a photovoltaics-membrane distillation (PV-MD) device that can stably produce clean water (>1.64 kg·m-2·h-1) from seawater while simultaneously having uncompromised electricity generation performance (>11%) under one Sun irradiation. Its high clean water production rate is realized by constructing multi stage membrane distillation (MSMD) device at the backside of the solar cell to recycle the latent heat of water vapor condensation in each distillation stage. This composite device can significantly reduce capital investment costs by sharing the same land and the same mounting system and thus represents a potential possibility to transform an electricity power plant from otherwise a water consumer to a fresh water producer.

RESUMO

Salinity-gradient is emerging as one of the promising renewable energy sources but its energy conversion is severely limited by unsatisfactory performance of available semipermeable membranes. Recently, nanoconfined channels, as osmotic conduits, have shown superior energy conversion performance to conventional technologies. Here, ion selective nanochannels in lamellar Ti3C2Tx MXene membranes are reported for efficient osmotic power harvesting. These subnanometer channels in the Ti3C2Tx membranes enable cation-selective passage, assisted with tailored surface terminal groups, under salinity gradient. A record-high output power density of 21 W·m-2 at room temperature with an energy conversion efficiency of up to 40.6% is achieved by controlled surface charges at a 1000-fold salinity gradient. In addition, due to thermal regulation of surface charges and ionic mobility, the MXene membrane produces a large thermal enhancement at 331 K, yielding a power density of up to 54 W·m-2. The MXene lamellar structure, coupled with its scalability and chemical tunability, may be an important platform for high-performance osmotic power generators.

RESUMO

Smart windows with high near-infrared (NIR) light shielding and controllable visible light transmittance are highly sought after for cooling energy saving in buildings. Herein, we present a rationally designed spectrally selective smart window which is capable of shielding 96.2% of the NIR irradiation from 800 to 2500 nm and at the same time permitting acceptable visible light (78.2% before and 45.3% after its optical switching) for indoor daylighting. The smart window synergistically integrates the highly selective and effective NIR absorption based photothermal conversion of cesium tungsten bronze (Cs xWO3) with the transparent thermoresponsive poly( N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel-polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel. Optical switching of the smart window is a direct result of the phase transition of PAM-PNIPAM hydrogel, which in turn is induced by the photothermal effect of Cs xWO3 under sunlight irradiation. The smart window exhibits fast optical switching, shows long-term operational stability, and can be made highly flexible. Under the experimental conditions in this work, the indoor temperature with the smart window is ∼21 °C lower than that with a regular single-layered glass window under one sun irradiation. The smart window design in this work is meaningful for further development of effective smart windows for energy saving in the build environment.

RESUMO

A sustainable supply of clean water is essential for the development of modern society, which has become increasingly dependent on desalination technology since 96.5% of the water on Earth is salt water. Thousands of desalination plants are producing massive waste brine as byproduct, and the direct discharge of brine raises serious concerns about its ecological impact. The concept of zero liquid discharge (ZLD) desalination is regarded as the solution, but the current ZLD technologies are hampered by their intensive use of energy and high cost. In this work, a 3D cup shaped solar evaporator was fabricated to achieve ZLD desalination with high energy efficiency via solar distillation. It produces solid salt as the only byproduct and uses sunlight as the only energy source. By rationally separating the light absorbing surface from the salt precipitation surface, the light absorption of the 3D solar evaporator is no longer affected by the salt crust layer as in conventional 2D solar evaporators. Therefore, it can be operated at an extremely high salt concentration of 25 wt % without noticeable water evaporation rate decay in at least 120 h. This new solar evaporator design concept offers a promising technology especially for high salinity brine treatment in desalination plants to achieve greener ZLD desalination as well as for hypersaline industrial wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

The Earth's atmosphere holds approximately 12 900 billion tons of fresh water distributed all over the world with fast replenishment. Atmospheric water harvesting is emerging as a promising strategy for clean water production in arid regions, land-locked areas, and remote communities. The water vapor sorbent is the key component for atmospheric water harvesting devices based on absorbing-releasing process. In this work, a flexible hybrid photothermal water sorbent composed of deliquescent salt and hydrogel was rationally fabricated. It possesses superior water sorption capacity even in low humidity air thanks to the deliquescent salt and maintains a solid form after it sorbs a large amount of water owing to the hydrogel platform. The harvested water could be easily released under regular sunlight via the photothermal effect, and it can be directly reused without noticeable capacity fading. An "easy-to-assemble-at-household" prototype device with 35 g of the dry hydrogel was tested outdoors under field conditions and delivered 20 g of fresh water within 2.5 h under natural sunlight. It is estimated that the material cost of making such a device to supply minimum daily water consumption for an adult (i.e., 3 kg) is only $3.20 (USD). This type of atmospheric water generator (AWG) is cheap and affordable, works perfectly with a broad range of humidity, does not need any electricity, and thus is especially suitable for clean water production in remote areas.
