Chinese universities have been conducting a variety of sexuality education programs, including a sexuality curriculum (SC) to increase sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge and improve sexual attitudes and practices among college students. However, little is known regarding the effect of SC on students' sexual attitudes and behaviors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of SC on SRH knowledge, sexual attitudes, and practices among college students of Shandong University. To assess these issues, an online cross-sectional survey was conducted via a WeChat applet. Four hundred and forty-nine freshmen were recruited from Shandong University, including 209 students with SC and 240 students without SC. We assessed their SRH knowledge, sexual attitude, and practice. We found that 15.8% engaged in sexual activities, while 59.2% had viewed nonscientific books or videos describing sexual behavior within the past 2 weeks. Regarding the initial source of their SRH information, 65.9% taught themselves through reading or viewing SRH content in the media, and 46.8% participated in school lectures on SRH, while only 31.2% of the participants discussed SRH matters with their parents. As compared with students without SC, students with SC had significantly greater total scores with regard to reproductive health knowledge (P < 0.001) and sexual health knowledge (P < 0.001). Students without SC showed a significant degree of prejudice against sexually transmitted disease patients and were more resistant to interact with acquaintances infected with human immunodeficiency virus (P < 0.001). Exposure to a school-based SC had a beneficial effect on increasing the SRH knowledge of these students as well as mitigating risky sexual attitudes and behaviors.NEW & NOTEWORTHY To assess the SRH knowledge, sexual attitudes, and practices in freshmen of Shandong University and assess the effect of SC, an online cross-sectional survey was conducted via a WeChat applet. Our findings indicate that these freshmen demonstrate a high prevalence of being sexually active and exposure to a school-based SC had a beneficial effect on increasing the SRH knowledge of these students as well as mitigating risky sexual attitudes and behaviors.

Background: Neurotoxicity induced by the amyloid beta (Aß) peptide is one of the most important pathological mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Activation of the adaptive IRE1α-XBP1 pathway contributes to the pathogenesis of AD, making it a potential target for AD therapeutics. However, the mechanism of IRE1α-XBP1 pathway involvement in AD is unclear. We, therefore, investigated the effect of the IRE1α-XBP1 axis in an in vitro AD model and explored its potential mechanism. Methods: The human neuroblastoma cell line, SH-SY5Y, was used. Cells were treated with Aß25-35, with or without 4µ8c, an inhibitor of IRE1α. Cells were collected and analyzed by Western blotting, quantitative real-time PCR, electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, calcium imaging, and other biochemical assays. Results: Aß-exposed SH-SY5Y cells showed an increased expression of XBP1s and p-IRE1α. 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and calcium imaging analysis showed that the IRE1α inhibitor, 4µ8c, reduced Aß-induced cytotoxicity. Increased levels of ATP, restoration of mitochondrial membrane potential, and decreased production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species after Aß treatment in the presence of 4µ8c showed that inhibiting the IRE1α-XBP1 axis effectively mitigated Aß-induced mitochondrial dysfunction in SH-SY5Y cells. Furthermore, Aß treatment increased the expression and interaction of IP3R, Grp75, and vdac1 and led to an increased endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-mitochondria association, malfunction of mitochondria-associated ER-membranes (MAMs), and mitochondrial dysfunction. These deficits were rescued by inhibiting the IRE1α-XBP1 axis. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that Aß peptide induces the activation of the IRE1α-XBP1 axis, which may aggravate cytotoxicity and mitochondrial impairment in SH-SY5Y cells by targeting MAMs. Inhibition of the IRE1α-XBP1 axis provides the protection against Aß-induced injury in SH-SY5Y cells and may, therefore, be a new treatment strategy.

Oxytocin (OT), a hormone synthesized within the paraventricular nucleus and supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus, when given intracerebroventricularly, induces strong scratching behaviors. However, it is not clear whether intradermal injection (ID) of OT elicits itch sensation. Herein, we found that OT (0.02 mg/ml) did not elicit an itch-scratching response in mice but aggravated chloroquine (CQ, 3 mmol/L)-elicited scratching behavior. Similar to OT, arginine vasopressin (AVP, 0.02 mg/ml), which is structurally related to OT, also enhanced CQ-induced scratching behavior but did not directly induce scratching behavior in mice. Mechanistically, OT-mediated enhancement of CQ-induced scratching behavior was significantly suppressed by conivaptan (0.05 mg/ml), a vasopressin-1a receptor (V1AR) antagonist and 1,400 W (3 mg/kg), inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), but not OT receptor (OTR) antagonist L-368,899 (0.05 mg/ml). Notably, conivaptan also directly decreased CQ-induced scratching. In conclusion, OT plays a role in CQ-induced scratching behavior via V1AR binding events. V1AR antagonists could be used as possible treatments for CQ-induced itch.

The room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have potential in realizing the ethylene (C(2)H(4)) and acetylene (C(2)H(2)) separation and avoiding solvent loss and environmental pollution compared with traditional solvents. The interaction mechanisms between gases and RTILs are important for the exploration of new RTILs for gas separation; thus, they were studied by quantum chemical calculation and molecular dynamics simulation in this work. The optimized geometries were obtained for the complexes of C(2)H(4)/C(2)H(2) with anions (Tf(2)N(-), BF(4)(-), and OAc(-)), cation (bmim(+)), and their ion pairs, and the analysis for geometry, interaction energy, natural bond orbital (NBO), and atoms in molecules (AIM) was performed. The quantum chemical calculation results show that the hydrogen-bonding interaction between the gas molecule and anion is the dominant factor in determining the solubility of C(2)H(2) in RTILs. However, the hydrogen-bonding interaction, the p-π interaction in C(2)H(4)-anion, and the π-π interaction in C(2)H(4)-cation are weak and comparable, which all affect the solubility of C(2)H(4) in RTILs with comparable contribution. The calculated results for the distance of H(gas)···X (X = O or F in anions), the BSSE-corrected interaction energy, the electron density of H(gas)···X at the bond critical point (ρ(BCP)), and the relative second-order perturbation stabilization energy (E(2)) are consistent with the experimental data that C(2)H(2) is more soluble than C(2)H(4) in the same RTILs and the solubility of C(2)H(4) in RTILs has the following order: [bmim][Tf(2)N] > [bmim][OAc] > [bmim][BF(4)]. The calculated results also agree with the order of C(2)H(2) solubility in different RTILs that [bmim][OAc] > [bmim][BF(4)] > [bmim][Tf(2)N]. Furthermore, the calculation results indicate that there is strong C(2)H(2)-RTIL interaction, which cannot be negligible compared to the RTIL-RTIL interaction; thus, the regular solution theory is probably not suitable to correlate C(2)H(2) solubility in RTILs. The molecular dynamics simulation results show that the hydrogen bond between the H in C2 of the imidazolium cation and the anion will weaken the hydrogen-bonding interaction of the gas molecule and anion in a realistic solution condition, especially in the C(2)H(4)-RTIL system.

In this study, the efforts to reduce NOx and particulate matter (PM) emissions from a diesel engine using both ethanol-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx over an Ag/Al2O3 catalyst and a biodiesel-ethanol-diesel fuel blend (BE-diesel) on an engine bench test are discussed. Compared with diesel fuel, use of BE-diesel increased PM emissions by 14% due to the increase in the soluble organic fraction (SOF) of PM, but it greatly reduced the Bosch smoke number by 60%-80% according to the results from 13-mode test of European Stationary Cycle (ESC) test. The SCR catalyst was effective in NOx reduction by ethanol, and the NOx conversion was approximately 73%. Total hydrocarbons (THC) and CO emissions increased significantly during the SCR of NOx process. Two diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) assemblies were used after Ag/Al2O3 converter to remove CO and HC. Different oxidation catalyst showed opposite effect on PM emission. The PM composition analysis revealed that the net effect of oxidation catalyst on total PM was an integrative effect on SOF reduction and sulfate formation of PM. The engine bench test results indicated that the combination of BE-diesel and a SCR catalyst assembly could provide benefits for NOx and PM emissions control even without using diesel particle filters (DPFs).
