RESUMO

Background: Neonatal (enteroviral) myocarditis (NM/NEM) is rare but unpredictable and devastating, with high mortality and morbidity. We report a case of neonatal coxsackievirus B (CVB) fulminant myocarditis successfully treated with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO). Case presentation: A previously healthy 7-day-old boy presented with fever for 4 days. Progressive cardiac dysfunction (weak heart sounds, hepatomegaly, pulmonary edema, ascites, and oliguria), decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and fractional shortening (FS), transient ventricular fibrillation, dramatically elevated creatine kinase-MB (405.8 U/L), cardiac troponin I (25.85 ng/ml), and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP > 35,000 ng/L), and positive blood CVB ribonucleic acid indicated neonatal CVB fulminating myocarditis. It was refractory to mechanical ventilation, fluid resuscitation, inotropes, corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulin, and diuretics during the first 4 days of hospitalization (DOH 1-4). The deterioration was suppressed by V-A ECMO in the next 5 days (DOH 5-9), despite the occurrence of bilateral grade III intraventricular hemorrhage on DOH 7. Within the first 4 days after ECMO decannulation (DOH 10-13), he continued to improve with withdrawal of mechanical ventilation, LVEF > 60%, and FS > 30%. In the subsequent 4 days (DOH 14-17), his LVEF and FS decreased to 52% and 25%, and further dropped to 37%-38% and 17% over the next 2 days (DOH 18-19), respectively. There was no other deterioration except for cardiomegaly and paroxysmal tachypnea. Through strengthening fluid restriction and diuresis, and improving cardiopulmonary function, he restabilized. Finally, notwithstanding NT-proBNP elevation (>35,000 ng/L), cardiomegaly, and low LVEF (40%-44%) and FS (18%-21%) levels, he was discharged on DOH 26 with oral medications discontinued within 3 weeks postdischarge. In nearly three years of follow-up, he was uneventful, with interventricular septum hyperechogenic foci and mild mitral/tricuspid regurgitation. Conclusions: Dynamic cardiac function monitoring via real-time echocardiography is useful for the diagnosis and treatment of NM/NEM. As a lifesaving therapy, ECMO may improve the survival rate of patients with NM/NEM. However, the "honeymoon period" after ECMO may cause the illusion of recovery. Regardless of whether the survivors of NM/NEM have undergone ECMO, close long-term follow-up is paramount to the prompt identification and intervention of abnormalities.

RESUMO

Liquid metal (LM)-based polymers have received growing interest for wearable health monitoring, electronic skins, and soft robotics. However, fabricating multifunctional LM-based polymers, in particular, featuring a convenient shaping ability while offering excellent deformability and conductivity remains a challenge. To overcome this obstacle, here, we propose a strategy to prepare LM-Gel "plasticine" (LGP) with great deformability, which is composed of a PVA (poly(vinyl alcohol)) soft network and an LM conductive phase. LGP can be easily constructed into different shapes such as plasticine and can be applied to different conditions (such as building a 3D circuit, circuit repair, and switch). Meanwhile, LGP has great conductivity (2.3 × 104 S/m) after surface annealing. Besides, LGP has a good electric heating performance, which shows the potential for application in wearable heating devices. Thus, this approach not only provides a way to prepare LM-polymer plasticine but also provides a novel perspective toward extending the applied range of LM-polymer composites.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although neonatal Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia is common and usually curable, it can also be refractory and life-threatening. Herein, we report a case of severe neonatal community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) necrotizing pneumonia with bilateral recurrent pyopneumothorax, respiratory failure, heart failure, and cardiac arrest. We hope our report will add to the understanding of this disease. CASE SUMMARY: An 18-d-old boy presented with cough for five days, fever for three days, and dyspnea for two days. Preadmission chest radiograph revealed high-density shadows in both lungs. On admission, his oxygen saturation fluctuated around 90% under synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation. He was unconscious, with dyspnea, weak heart sounds and hepatomegaly. Moist crackles were present throughout his left lung, while the breath sounds in the right lung were decreased. After high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, empiric antimicrobials (meropenem and vancomycin), improved circulation, and right pleural cavity drainage for right pneumothorax (approximately 90% compression), his oxygen saturation level stayed above 95%, and recruitment of the right lung was observed. His condition did not deteriorate until the 5th day of hospitalization (DOH 5). On the morning of DOH 5, his oxygen saturation decreased. Subsequent chest radiograph showed bilateral pneumothorax with nearly 100% compression of the left lung. Desaturation was not relieved after urgent left pleural cavity drainage, and cardiac arrest occurred soon thereafter. Although his spontaneous heartbeat returned through emergency resuscitation and salvage antibacterial therapy (linezolid and levofloxacin) was administered given the detection and antimicrobial susceptibility of MRSA, he showed no improvement, with recurrent pyopneumothorax and continued drainage of purulent fluid and necrotic lung tissue fragments from the pleural cavity. Eventually, his parents refused extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and gave up all the treatments, and the newborn passed away soon after withdrawal on DOH 13. CONCLUSION: Neonatal MRSA pneumonia can be refractory and lethal, especially in cases where necrotizing pneumonia leads to extensive lung necrosis and recurrent pneumothorax. Despite treatment with linezolid and other medical measures, it may still be ineffective. Currently, ECMO has been a remedial therapy, but if the lung tissue is too severely eroded to be repaired, it may be useless unless the infection can be controlled and lung transplantation can be performed. Regardless of whether ECMO is initiated, the key to successful treatment is to achieve control over the pneumonia caused by MRSA as soon as possible and to reverse lung injury as much as possible.

RESUMO

Background: Numerous computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction algorithms have been developed to improve image quality, and high-quality renal CT images are crucial to clinical diagnosis. This study evaluated the image quality and lesion visibility of deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) compared with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-Veo (ASiR-V) in contrast-enhanced renal CT at different reconstruction strengths and doses. Methods: From January 2020 to May 2021, we prospectively included 101 patients who underwent renal contrast-enhanced CT scanning (69 at 120 kV; 32 at 80 kV). All image data were reconstructed with ASiR-V (30% and 70%) and DLIR at low, medium, and high reconstruction strengths (DLIR-L, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H, respectively). The CT number, noise, noise reduction rate (NRR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), overall image quality, and the proportion of acceptable images were compared. Lesions of DLIR groups were evaluated, and the conspicuity-to-noise ratio (C/N) was calculated. Results: Quantitative values (noise, SNR, CNR, and NRR) significantly differed between all reconstructions at 120 and 80 kV (P<0.001) and between each reconstruction, except ASiR-V 70% vs. DLIR-M. At 120 kV, the overall image quality and the proportion of acceptable images significantly differed between all reconstructions (P<0.001) and between each reconstruction, except ASiR-V 30% vs. DLIR-L and ASiR-V 70% vs. DLIR-M. At 80 kV, the overall image quality significantly differed between all reconstructions (P<0.001) and between each reconstruction, except between ASiR-V 30%, ASiR-V 70%, and DLIR-L. Quantitative and qualitative values were highest in DLIR-H, while the values were close in DLIR-H (80 kV) vs. ASiR-V 70% (120 kV) and DLIR-M (80 kV) vs. ASiR-V 30% (120 kV). The lesion conspicuity and noise significantly differed in DLIR at 120 kV and 80 kV (P<0.001). C/N significantly differed in DLIR at 120 kV (P<0.001) but not at 80 kV. DLIR-L and DLIR-M exhibited much-improved lesion display (C/N >1), and DLIR-H exhibited much-improved noise (C/N <1) at 120 kV. Conclusions: DLIR significantly improved the image quality and lesion visibility of renal CT compared with ASiR-V, even at a low dose.

RESUMO

Barnacle exhibits high adhesion strength underwater for its glue with coupled adhesion mechanisms, including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic force, and hydrophobic interaction. Inspired by such adhesion mechanism, we designed and constructed a hydrophobic phase separation hydrogel induced by the electrostatic and hydrogen bond interaction assembly of PEI and PMAA. By coupling the effect of hydrogen bond, electrostatic force and hydrophobic interaction, our gel materials show an ultrahigh mechanical strength, which is up to 2.66 ± 0.18 MPa. Also, benefit from the coupled adhesion forces, as well as the ability to destroy the interface water layer, the adhesion strength on the polar materials can be up to 1.99 ± 0.11 MPa underwater, while that of the adhesion strength is about 2.70 ± 0.21 MPa under silicon oil. This work provides a deeper understanding of the underwater adhesion principle of barnacle glue. Furthermore, our bioinspired strategy would provide an inspiration for the fabrication of high mechanical gel materials, and the rapid strong adhesive used in both water and organic solvents.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate image quality of deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) in contrast-enhanced renal and adrenal computed tomography (CT) compared with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-Veo (ASiR-V). METHODS: We prospectively recruited 52 patients. All images were reconstructed with ASiR-V 30%, ASiR-V 70%, and DLIR at low, medium, and high reconstruction strengths. CT number, noise, noise reduction rate, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were measured and calculated within the region of interest (ROI) on subcutaneous fat, bilateral renal cortices, renal medulla, renal arteries, and adrenal glands. For qualitative analyses, the differentiation of the renal cortex and medulla, conspicuity of the adrenal gland boundary, sharpness, artifacts, and subjective noise were assessed. The overall image quality was calculated on a scale from 0 (worst) to 15 (best) based on the five values above and the score≥9 was acceptable. RESULTS: CT number does not significantly differ between the reconstruction datasets. Noise does not significantly differ between ASiR-V 30% and DLIR-L, but it is significantly lower using ASiR-V 70%, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H. The noise reduction rate relative to ASiR-V 30% is significantly different between the DLIR groups and ASiR-V 70%, and DLIR-H yields the highest noise reduction rate (61.6%). SNR and CNR are higher for DLIR-M, DLIR-H, and ASiR-V 70% than for ASiR-V 30% and DLIR-L. DLIR-H shows the best SNR and CNR. The overall image quality yields the same pattern for DLIR-H, with the highest score. Percentages of cases with overall image quality score≥9 are 100% (DLIR-H), 94.23% (DLIR-M), 90.38% (ASiR-V70%), 67.31% (DLIR-L), and 63.46% (ASiR-V30%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: DLIR significantly improved the objective and subjective image quality of renal and adrenal CTs, yielding superior noise reduction compared with ASiR-V.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess clinical application of applying deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithm to contrast-enhanced portal venous phase liver computed tomography (CT) for improving image quality and lesions detection rate compared with using adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR-V) algorithm under routine dose. METHODS: The raw data from 42 consecutive patients who underwent contrast-enhanced portal venous phase liver CT were reconstructed using three strength levels of DLIRs (low [DL-L]; medium [DL-M]; high [DL-H]) and two levels of ASIR-V (30%[AV-30]; 70%[AV-70]). Objective image parameters, including noise, signal-to-noise (SNR), and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) relative to muscle, as well as subjective parameters, including noise, artifact, hepatic vein-clarity, index lesion-clarity, and overall scores were compared pairwise. For the lesions detection rate, the five reconstructions in patients who underwent subsequent contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations were compared. RESULTS: For objective parameters, DL-H exhibited superior image quality of lower noise and higher SNR than AV-30 and AV-70 (all P < 0.05). CNR was not statistically different between AV-70, DL-M, and DL-H (all P > 0.05). In both objective and subjective parameters, only image noise was statistically reduced as the strength of DLIR increased compared with ASIR-V (all P < 0.05). Regarding the lesions detection rate, a total of 45 lesions were detected by MRI examination and all five reconstructions exhibited similar lesion-detection rate (25/45, 55.6%). CONCLUSION: Compared with AV-30 and AV 70, DLIR leads to better image quality with equal lesion detection rate for liver CT imaging under routine dose.

RESUMO

Although the COVID19 epidemic has lasted for months, it has not yet been successfully controlled, and little is known about neonatal COVID19. Therefore, literature search was conducted for references in PubMed, Science Direct, ProQuest, Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure for detailed case reports on neonatal COVID19 published as of July 15, 2020, to facilitate the clinical treatment, epidemic prevention and control of neonatal COVID19. Forty nonoverlapping case reports focusing mainly on the demographic characteristics, transmission modes, clinical features, treatments and prognosis of neonatal COVID19, including 3 in Chinese and 37 in English, were available.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To develop and validate a radiomics model using computed tomography (CT) images acquired from the first diagnosis to estimate the status of occult brain metastases (BM) in patients with stage IV lung adenocarcinoma (LADC). METHODS: One hundred and ninety-three patients who were first diagnosed with stage IV LADC were enrolled and divided into a training cohort (n=135) and a validation cohort (n=58). Then, 725 radiomic features were extracted from contoured primary tumor volumes of LADCs. Intra- and interobserver reliabilities were calculated, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) was applied for feature selection. Subsequently, a radiomics signature (Rad-Score) was built. To improve performance, a nomogram incorporating a radiomics signature and an independent clinical predictor was developed. Finally, the established signature and nomogram were assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and precision-recall curves (PRC). Both empirical and α-binomial model-based ROCs and PRCs were plotted, and the area under the curve (AUC) and average precision (AP) of ROCs and PRCs were calculated and compared. RESULTS: A radiomics signature and Rad-Score were constructed using eight radiomic features, and these had significant correlations with occult BM status. A nomogram was developed by incorporating a Rad-Score and the primary tumor location. The nomogram yielded an optimal AUC of 0.911 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.903-0.919] and an AP of 0.885 (95% CI: 0.876-0.894) in the training cohort, and an AUC of 0.873 (95% CI: 0.866-0.80) and an AP of 0.827 (95% CI: 0.820-0.834) in the validation cohort using α-binomial model-based method. The calibration curve demonstrated that the nomogram showed high agreement between the actual occult BM probability and predicted by the nomogram (P=0.427). CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram incorporating a radiomics signature and a clinical risk factor achieved optimal performance after holistic assessment using unbiased indexes for diagnosing occult BM of patients who were first diagnosed with stage IV LADC.

RESUMO

Hydrogel hybrids are one of the key factors in life activities and biomimetic science; however, their development and utilization are critically impeded by their inadequate adhesive strength and intricate process. In nature, barnacles can stick to a variety of solid surfaces firmly (adhesive strength above 300 kPa) using a hydrophobic interface, which inspires us to firmly combine hydrogels and polymers through introducing an adhesive layer. By spreading a hydrophobic liquid membrane directly, tough combination of a hydrogel and a polymer substrate could be achieved after one-step polymerization. The fracture energy of the hydrogel attached to the surface of polyvinyl chloride was up to 1200 J m-2 and the tensile strength reached 1.21 MPa. Furthermore, the adhesion samples with this method exhibit an antifatigue performance, having withstood large bends and twists. It should be pointed out that this approach can also be applied to a variety of complicated surfaces. This work may expand the application range of hydrogels and provides an inspiration for hydrogel adhesion.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that inflammation plays an important role in the occurrence and development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD); however, there were rare researches about the changes of neutrophils and their influence on the prognosis of BPD. Hence, we aimed to explore the changes in the number of peripheral blood neutrophils (PBNs), and the relationship between these changes and susceptibility to pulmonary infection among children with BPD. METHODS: Firstly, the gene expression of lung tissues and the number of PBNs were respectively detected by RNA sequencing and complete blood count in the 85% O2-induced BPD model rats. Then it was analyzed the number of PBNs after birth and the incidence of pneumonia within 6 months of corrected age (CA) after discharge among full-term infants (FTIs: gestational age [GA] between 370/7 and 416/7 weeks, n = 88), preterm infants with (PTIs-BPD: GA <32 weeks, n = 35) or without BPD (PTIs-nBPD: GA <32 weeks, n = 41). RESULTS: The levels of S100A8 and S100A9 mRNAs were significantly decreased in the lungs of BPD rats. Moreover, the number of PBNs was also decreased in BPD rats. The number of PBNs at birth in FTIs was significantly greater than that in PTIs-BPD or in PTIs-nBPD (p < 0.001), while those between PTIs-BPD and PTIs-nBPD showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). Although the peripheral blood neutrophils decreased overall after birth in both PTIs-nBPD and PTIs-BPD groups, only the reduction in the PTIs-BPD group was significant (p < 0.001). Importantly, at 36-37 weeks of postmenstrual age (PMA), the number of PBNs in PTIs-BPD was significantly fewer than that in PTIs-nBPD (p < 0.001). In addition, PTIs-BPD had a significantly higher incidence of pneumonia than PTIs-nBPD within 6 months of CA after discharge (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The number of PBNs in PTIs-BPD decreased progressively when compared to that in PTIs-nBPD, which might contribute to their susceptibility to pulmonary infection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Freshly isolated mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) have great proliferation capacity but quickly enter senescent state after several rounds of cell cycle, a process called premature senescence. Cellular senescence can be induced by various stresses such as telomere erosion, DNA damage, and oncogenic signaling. But the contribution of other molecules, such as growth factors, to cellular senescence is incompletely understood. This study aimed to compare the gene expression difference between non-senescent and senescent MEFs to identify the key molecule(s) involved in the spontaneous senescence of MEFs. MATERIAL AND METHODS Primary MEFs were isolated from E12.5 pregnant C57/BL6 mice. The cells were continuously cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium for 9 passages. SA-ß-Gal staining was used as an indicator of cell senescence. The supernatant from primary MEFs (P1 medium) or Passage 6 MEFs (P6 medium) were used to culture freshly isolated MEFs to observe the effects on cell senescence state. Gene expression profiles of primary and senescent MEFs were investigated by RNA-Seq to find the key genes involved in cell senescence. Adipocyte differentiation assay was used to evaluate the stemness of MEFs cultured in FGF2-stimulated medium. RESULTS The senescence of MEFs cultured in the P1 medium was alleviated when compared to the P6 medium. Downregulation of FGF2 expression was revealed by RNA-Seq and further confirmed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot. FGF2-stimulated medium also had anti-senescence function and could maintain the differentiation ability of MEFs. CONCLUSIONS The premature senescence of MEFs was at least partially caused by FGF2 deficiency. Exogenous FGF2 could alleviate the senescent phenotype.

RESUMO

Previous studies have demonstrated the cardioprotective role of resveratrol (Res). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the protective role of Res are still largely unknown. H9c2 cells were distributed into five groups: normal condition (Control), DMSO, 20 mMRes (dissolved with DMSO), hypoxia (Hyp), and Res+Hyp. Cell apoptosis was evaluated using flow cytometry and protein analysis of cleaved caspase 3 (cle-caspase 3). qRT-PCR assay was performed to measure the expression of microRNA-30d-5p (miR-30d-5p). MTT assay was performed to evaluate the cell proliferation. The relationship between miR-30d- 5p and silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) was confirmed by luciferase reporter, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), and western blot assays. Western blot was performed to analyze NF-κB/p65 and I-κBα expressions. Our data showed that hypoxia enhanced apoptosis and NF-κB signaling pathway, which was alleviated by Res treatment. Hypoxia increased the expression of miR-30d-5p while decreased the SIRT1expression, which was also attenuated by Res treatment. Furthermore, miR-30d-5p depletion inhibited the proliferation, reduced apoptosis and decreased the expression of cle-caspase 3 in H9c2 cells with hypoxia treatment. Luciferase reporter, RIP, and western blot assays further confirmed that miR-30d-5p negatively regulated the expression of SIRT1. Interestingly, the rescue-of-function experiments further indicated that knockdown of SIRT1 attenuated the effect of miR-30d-5p depletion on proliferation, apoptosis NF-κB signaling pathway inH9c2 cells with hypoxia treatment. In addition, the suppression of NF-κB signaling pathway increased cell viability while decreased cell apoptosis in hypoxia-mediatedH9c2 cells. Our data suggested Res mayprotectH9c2 cells against hypoxia-induced apoptosis through miR-30d-5p/SIRT1/NF-κB axis.

RESUMO

A novel Hf-based anti-oxidation coating has been prepared on the surface of low-density carbon-bonded carbon fiber composites (CBCFs). The coating exhibits a gradient transition structure, with mainly HfB2, Hf2Si and SiC ceramics. Oxyacetylene torch testing has been utilized to evaluate the ablation resistance under the condition ranging from 1.6 MW m-2 to 2.2 MW m-2 for 300 s. The experimental results show that the as-prepared Hf-based coating can effectively protect CBCFs under high-temperature oxidation conditions. The surface maximum temperature can reach 1616-2037 °C, and the mass ablation rates vary from -3.5 × 10-5 g s-1 cm-2 to 1.5 × 10-5 g s-1 cm-2. The formation of a dense SiO2 glass layer embedded with HfO2 grains or particle accumulation in the HfO2 layer is responsible for the good ablation resistance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to biomechanically analyze a mini-implant at different healing times before loading. METHODS: Sixty-four mini-implants with (12 +/- 1) N x cm insertion torque were placed in the low jaw of eight beagle dogs. The test mini-implants remained in the low jaw for 0, 1, 3, and 8 weeks of bone healing and for an additional 10 weeks under a force of 0.98 N. The unloaded control implants were further divided into four groups (1, 3, 8, and 10 weeks). Maximum removal torque (MRT) testing was performed to evaluate the interfacial share strength of each group. Surface analysis of the removed implants was performed by scanning electric microscope (SEM). RESULTS: The MRT for the loading implants at 0, 1, 3, and 8 weeks of healing were 4.10, 4.25, 2.42, and 4.42 N x cm, respectively. During the healing process, the removal torque values of the 3-week implants were significantly lower than those of the other healing groups (P < 0.05). The unloaded 3-week implants also had lower removal torques (P < 0.05). The implant surface of the 3-week test group showed more fibrous bone. However, the other loading implants had more lamellar-like tissue. CONCLUSION: A stable dangerous period occurred approximately 3 weeks after mini-implant insertion. A 3-week healing is disadvantageous to the stability of the implant. Orthodontics loading occurred immediately or after 1 week as a function of the healing time. The 8-week implant appeared to have a positive effect on peri-implant bone remodeling and implant stability.

RESUMO

To determine the prevalence of bovine giardiasis in Heilongjiang Province in China and to molecularly characterize Giardia duodenalis, feces were collected from 814 dairy and beef cattle ranging in age from 6 days to 9 years. Clinical symptoms of diarrhea were recorded at the time of sampling. The G. duodenalis infection rate in cattle was 5.2 % (42/814) as determined by Lugol's iodine staining. G. duodenalis assemblages and subtypes were genetically diagnosed by sequence analysis of the triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) gene. Three assemblages were identified, representing A (n = 1), B (n = 18), and E (n = 24), with a mixed infection case of assemblages A and E. High heterogeneity was also observed within assemblages B and E at the TPI locus. Among the assemblages, eight subtypes of assemblage B and three subtypes of assemblage E were found to be novel subtypes. Findings on assemblages A and B are of public health importance. The zoonotic potential of bovine giardiasis needs to be further assessed by extensive genetic data of assemblages A and B from humans at the subtype level. The newly found subtypes of assemblages B and E imply that the evaluation of geographically distributed subtypes is of importance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment with maxillary protraction with or without rapid palatal expansion (RPE) for skeletal Class III malocclusion in mixed dentition. METHODS: A total of 31 children with Class III malocclusion in mixed dentition were selected, and 15 (group A) received maxillary protraction treatment with RPE, the other 16 (group B) received maxillary protraction without RPE. Cephalometric films were taken before and after treatment, and traditional and Pancherz analysis were used. RESULTS: The average duration of treatment was 10.14 months in group A and 9.77 months in group B respectively (P>0.05). According to Pancherz analysis, maxillary basal bone moved forwards by 2.99 mm in group A and 3.33 mm in group B respectively (P>0.05), mandibular basal bone moved backwards by 0.07 mm in group A, while forwards by 0.80 mm in group B (P>0.05), the overjet increased by 4.51 mm in group A and 6.37 mm in group B respectively (P<0.05), and the molar relationship improved by 4.97 mm in group A and 4.73 mm in group B respectively (P>0.05). The effects were clinically satisfactory in the both groups. Lower molar moved forwards by 1.18 mm in basal bone in group A, while backwards by 1.20 mm in group B (P<0.05). Traditional cephalometric analysis showed no statistic differences between the two groups except that upper incisior showed greater procline in group B than in group A (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The study shows that maxillary protraction treatment, with or without RPE, is clinically satisfactory to correct early skeletal Class III malocclusion.
