Black pregnant women in Chicago are disproportionately affected by maternal morbidity and mortality and are more likely to reside in neighborhoods that experience greater economic hardships and food apartheid than any other race/ethnicity. Addressing social determinants of health such as structural inequities, economic environment, and food apartheid issues may provide insights into eliminating Black maternal morbidity and mortality disparities. This study explores food choice determinants and dietary perspectives of young, urban, Black pregnant women. Two audio-recorded focus groups were conducted in Chicago, IL between March 2019 and June 2019 to discuss pregnancy experiences and factors affecting maternal nutrition. Thematic analysis was used to identify the codes, themes, and subthemes of the data. Data analysis was guided by the Social Ecological Model (SEM) as a theoretical framework. Eleven, young, Black women were recruited. Three major themes were discussed across the SEM levels that influenced food choice including food access, stress and family influences on eating, and the need for nutritional education during pregnancy. These choices were primarily rooted in the detrimental effects of food apartheid experienced within the participants' neighborhoods. Therefore, acknowledging, understanding, and addressing food apartheid and its impact on Black maternal health disparities is needed in clinical practice, research, and policy change.

BACKGROUND: Rowell syndrome (RS) is an uncommon condition characterized by erythema multiforme (EM)-like lesions and lupus erythematosus. It is more common in females, and EM may be the first manifestation of the disease with positive autoantibodies, such as antinuclear antibody (ANA), SSA, SSB and rheumatoid factor. The pathogenesis of RS is unknown and is likely caused by drug induction, ultraviolet exposure and infection. METHOD: We describe a case of RS from China which presented as characteristic targetoid-like lesions and chilblain-like erythema on hands and feet. This is a case of RS in a female patient from the inpatient department of dermatology. RESULTS: A 41-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus exhibited chilblain-like erythema and characteristic EM lesions on her extremities. She tested positive for serum ANA (1:320) and anti-double-stranded DNA, as well as other autoantibodies. Systemic glucocorticoids and hydroxychloroquine worked effectively for her. CONCLUSION: The present case met diagnostic criteria of RS. Notably, there was a co-occurrence of facial butterfly erythema, chilblain-like erythema and EM lesions distributed on the limbs in this case.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 10-20% of individuals suffer from mental health concerns during the prenatal period due to their vulnerability and emotional responses to stressful events. Mental health disorders are more likely to be disabling and persistent for people of color, and they are less likely to seek treatment due to stigma. Young pregnant Black people report experiencing stress due to isolation, feelings of conflict, lack of material and emotional resources, and support from significant others. Although many studies have reported the types of stressors experienced, personal resources, emotional stress responses on pregnancy, and mental health outcomes, there is limited data on young Black women's perceptions of these factors. METHODS: This study utilizes the Health Disparities Research Framework to conceptualize drivers of stress related to maternal health outcomes for young Black women. We conducted a thematic analysis to identify stressors for young Black women. RESULTS: Findings revealed the following overarching themes: Societal stress of being young, Black, and pregnant; Community level systems that perpetuate stress and structural violence; Interpersonal level stressors; Individual level effects of stress on mom and baby; and Coping with stress. DISCUSSION: Acknowledging and naming structural violence and addressing structures that create and fuel stress for young pregnant Black people are important first steps to interrogating systems that allow for nuanced power dynamics and for recognizing the full humanity of young pregnant Black people.

Introduction: The stump site of amputees is clinically vulnerable and prone to various skin diseases. Data regarding the impact on quality of life (QoL) of amputees with amputation stump skin disease (ASSD) and risk factors of ASSD and stump fungal infection in the Shanghai area are yet unknown. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the QoL of amputees with ASSD and explore the risk factors of ASSD and stump fungal infection in the Shanghai area. Methodology: A total of 104 amputees from Shanghai Hebin Rehabilitation Hospital, Otto Bock (China) Industries Co., Ltd., Shanghai Tongji Hospital, and Shanghai Rehabilitation and Vocational Training Center for the Disabled were enrolled in this study. We collected demographic, clinical, and skin fungal examination data from these amputees from April 2015 to May 2021. Dermatology life quality index (DLQI) questionnaire was used to evaluate the QoL. The risk factors for ASSD and fungal skin infection were analyzed by the univariate analyses. Results: The median age of the 104 amputees was 57.9 ± 11.9 years with an average amputation time of 17.7 ± 15.1 years, and 73% of cases were men. The mean DLQI score of amputees with ASSD was13.6, suggesting the severe impairment of QoL. Among amputees, 41 (39.4%) had confirmed ASSD, of whom 24 (58.5%) suffered from fungal skin infection and the remaining were subjected to intertriginous dermatitis and eczema (22%), cutaneous keratosis (12.2%), and others (7.3%). Aspergillus (50.0%) was the most common species. The other fungal organisms included Trichophyton rubrum (33.3%), Candida krusei (8.3%), T. mentagrophytes (4.2%), and C. albicans (4.2%). ASSD rather than non-ASSD was more common in men (80.4%) and summer (46.3%). Summer (OR = 3.31, 95% CI = 1.19-9.17) was an established risk factor for ASSD compared to spring. The daily artificial limb wearing time > 8 h was associated with stump fungal infection. Conclusion: The QoL of amputees with ASSD was severely affected and the ASSD was characterized by fungal infection (tinea), intertriginous dermatitis, eczema, and skin keratosis. Summer and daily prosthesis wearing > 8 h was a risk factor for ASSD. Aspergillus was the most common fungal species, especially when the stump was exposed in summer.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia has become an exceedingly prevalent dermatological disorder. Etiologically, infection (bacterial and fungal infection), inflammation, and immune dysregulation are the main causes of immune-mediated hair loss. Treating hair loss has remained challenging as the available therapies are limited. Exosomes from adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC-Exos) have been used for treating neurodegenerative diseases and autoimmune diseases and in wound-healing treatments. However, the function and mechanism of ADSC-Exos in alopecia treatment remain unclear. This study is aimed at investigating the effects of ADSC-Exos on hair growth in vitro and in vivo for potentially treating immune-mediated alopecia and further exploring the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of dermal papilla cells (DPCs) that were treated with ADSC-Exos were detected using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, scratch wound-healing assay, and flow cytometry assay, respectively. A C57BL/6 hair-depilated mouse model was established in vivo; then, ADSC-Exos were subcutaneously injected alone or in combined with minoxidil. The effects of ADSC-Exos on hair growth, pathological changes, and the related mechanism were investigated by HE staining, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). RESULTS: ADSC-Exos significantly promoted DPC proliferation and migration while also reducing apoptosis. In addition, compared with the control group, ADSC-Exos-treated mice had better hair growth, more hair follicles (HFs) and thicker dermis. RNA-seq revealed that the miR-22 and TNF-α signaling pathways were markedly downregulated in DPCs after ADSC-Exos treatment. In addition, according to qRT-PCR and western blotting results, the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway was activated in the skin of ADSC-Exos-treated mice. CONCLUSION: ADSC-Exos therapy positively affected the promotion of hair regrowth by regulating miR-22, the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, and the TNF-α signaling pathway, implying that ADSC-Exos could be a promising cell-free therapeutic strategy for immune-mediated alopecia.

Rhein is a key ingredient in many herbal remedies and is widely used. However, herbs containing rhein are frequently associated with poisoning incidents, especially in elderly subjects. Acute and subchronic toxicity of rhein in Kunming mice (KM) was investigated in this experiment. Acute toxicity tests showed a 40% lethality at a given rhein dose of 4000 mg/kg, and the LD50 of rhein was calculated by the bliss method to be greater than 2185.6 mg/kg. In subchronic toxicity, d-gal-induced aged and immature animals were randomized into three groups that were exposed to rhein of 0, 175, and 375 mg/kg/d for 75 days, respectively. No mortality was observed in immature mice group, whereas 55.5% (5/9) subjects in aged mice groups died in the high dosage group. AST, ALT, IL-6, TNF-α levels and typical histopathological changes indicate that rhein causes liver injury. In addition, our investigation explored possible hepatotoxic mechanisms of rhein and experimental results showed increased ROS production, NRF-2 and MDA levels and decreased SOD levels, demonstrating that rhein causes oxidative stress. MMP and mitochondrial swelling levels were able to assess the impact of rhein on mitochondrial function. Furthermore, the effect of rhein on apoptosis can be detected by flow cytometry. Our studies suggested that rhein induces oxidative stress leading to mitochondria dysfunction and apoptotic activation. Multidrug resistance protein (MRP) is an efflux transporter protein and is capable of transporting cellular oxidative stress-related substances. To further clarify the role of MRP in rhein induced oxidative stress, we examined MRP expression in the liver. However, the expression of MRP has no statistical significance.

The genus Apterygothrips Priesner is a group of mainly wingless species in the tribe Haplothripini. The genus is diagnosed here based on the three species known from China, including A.flavescens Dang & Qiao sp. nov. collected from bases of grass in Tibet. An illustrated identification key to the three species from China is provided and the CO1 barcode sequence is given for the new species.

Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of androgenetic alopecia patients has become increasingly important, but the influencing factors associated with the different domains are poorly understood. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the influencing factors in HRQoL of androgenetic alopecia patients and identify its strongly associated domains. Patients and Methods: We enrolled 170 androgenetic alopecia patients. HRQoL was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Version (WHO-BREF), and Hairdex. Results: HRQoL was significantly impaired in patients <30 years, (WHO-BREF: P=0.022, Hairdex: P=0.004), less educated (WHO-BREF: P=0.021, Hairdex: P=0.003), single patients (Hairdex: P=0.023), and urban residence (Hairdex: P=0.043). By domains, those <30 years were impaired by physical health (P=0.038) and psychological (P=0.030) by WHO-BREF, and symptoms (P=0.002) and emotions (P=0.002) by Hairdex. Singles were impaired by symptoms (P=0.020), and emotions (P=0.009) by Hairdex. Less-educated individuals had impaired all domains in the WHO-BREF and Hairdex, except for physical health. Women had impaired symptoms (P=0.013) and stigmatization (P=0.041) in Hairdex. Conclusion: Androgenetic alopecia is associated with significantly reduced HRQoL in young, less educated, and single patients. Dermatologists should inquire about Quality of Life and appropriately support androgenetic alopecia patients.

Siwei Jianghuang Decoction Powder (SWJH) documented originally in the Four Medical Tantras-Blue Glaze exhibited beneficial effects on diabetic nephropathy (DN) via combined synergistically action of multiple formula components including Curcumae longae Rhizoma, Berberidis dictyophyllae Cortex, Phyllanthi Fructus and Tribuli Fructus. This study investigated the effects of SWJH on DN in db/db mice and possible underlying mechanisms. The ten weeks old db/db mice treated with SWJH by intra-gastric administration once a day for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, body weight, water and food intake of mice were recorded. The level of fasting blood glucose (FBG) was measured. Serum creatinine (Scr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), urine microalbumin (UMAlb), serum uric acid (UA) and urinary albumin excretion (UAE) were detected. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to test serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1). Real-time PCR and Western blot analysis were used to test mRNA and protein expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), VEGF and TGF-ß1 in kidney tissue. SWJH treatment significantly reduced the levels of FBG, Scr, BUN, UMAlb, UA and UAE and retarded renal fibrosis. SWJH treatment further significantly reduced serum TGF-ß1 level and downregulated the expression of HIF-1α, VEGF and TGF-ß1 at both mRNA and protein levels. Principal component analysis and partial least squares regression and hierarchical cluster analysis demonstrated that SWJH treatment significantly ameliorated renal damage in DN mice. These consequences suggested that SWJH formulations were effective in the treatment of DN through regulating the HIF-1α, VEGF and TGF-ß1 overexpression.
