RESUMO

Polyyne is an sp-hybridized linear carbon chain (LCC) with alternating single and triple carbon-carbon bonds. Polyyne is very reactive; thus, its structure can be easily damaged through a cross-linking reaction between the molecules. The longer the polyyne is, the more unstable it becomes. Therefore, it is difficult to directly synthesize long polyynes in a solvent. The encapsulation of polyynes inside carbon nanotubes not only stabilizes the molecules to avoid cross-linking reactions, but also allows a restriction reaction to occur solely at the ends of the polyynes, resulting in long LCCs. Here, by controlling the diameter of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), polyynes were filled with high yield below room temperature. Subsequent annealing of the filled samples promoted the reaction between the polyynes, leading to the formation of long LCCs. More importantly, single chiral (6,5) SWCNTs with high purity were used for the successful encapsulation of polyynes for the first time, and LCCs were synthesized by coalescing the polyynes in the (6,5) SWCNTs. This method holds promise for further exploration of the synthesis of property-tailored LCCs through encapsulation inside different chiral SWCNTs.

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) is a complex autoimmune disease featuring damage to salivary and lacrimal glands, with the possibility of manifestations across multiple organs. Antibody-producing B cells have long been appreciated to play a significant role in pSS pathogenesis, with a number of autoreactive antibody species having been identified to be elevated in pSS patients. While several studies have attempted to characterize the BCR repertoires of peripheral blood B cells in pSS patients, much remains unknown about the repertoire characteristics of gland-infiltrating B cells. METHODS: Through paired scRNAseq and scBCRseq, we profiled the BCR repertoires of both infiltrating and circulating B cells in a small cohort of patients. We further utilize receptor reconstruction analyses to further investigate repertoire characteristics in a wider cohort of pSS patients previously profiled through RNAseq. RESULTS: Via integrated BCR and transcriptome analysis of B cell clones, we generate a trajectory progression pattern for infiltrated memory B cells in pSS. We observe significant differences in BCR repertoires between the peripheral blood and labial gland B cells of pSS patients in terms of relative expansion, isotype usage, and BCR clustering. We further observe significant decreases in IgA2 isotype usage among pSS patient labial and parotid gland B cells these analyses relative to controls as well as a positive correlation between kappa/lambda light chain usage and clinical disease activity. CONCLUSIONS: Through BCR repertoire analysis of pSS patient salivary glands, we identify a number of novel repertoire characteristics that may serve as useful indicators of clinical disease and disease activity. By collecting these BCR repertoires into an accessible database, we hope to also enable comparative analysis of patient repertoires in pSS and potentially other autoimmune disorders.

Intensive development of vanadium-titanium mines leads to an increasing discharge of vanadium (V) into the environment, imposing potential risks to both environmental system and public health. Microorganisms play a key role in the biogeochemical cycling of V, influencing its transformation and distribution. In addition, the characterization of microbial community patterns serves to assess potential threats imposed by elevated V exposure. However, the impact of V on microbial community remains largely unknown in alkaline V tailing areas with a substantial amounts of V accumulation and nutrient-poor conditions. This study aims to explore the characteristics of microbial community in a wet tailing pond nearby a large-scale V mine. The results reveal V contamination in both water (0.60 mg/L) and sediment tailings (340 mg/kg) in the tailing pond. Microbial community diversity shows distinctive pattern between environmental metrices. Genera with the functional potential of metal reduction\resistance, nitrogen metabolism, and carbon fixation have been identified. In this alkaline V tailing pond, V and pH are major drivers to induce community variation, particularly for functional bacteria. Stochastic processes primarily govern the assemblies of microbial community in the water samples, while deterministic process regulate the community assemblies of sediment tailings. Moreover, the co-occurrence network pattern unveils strong selective pattern for sediment tailings communities, where genera form a complex network structure exhibiting strong competition for limited resource. These findings reveal the patterns of microbial adaptions in wet vanadium tailing ponds, providing insightful guidelines to mitigate the negative impact of V tailing and develop sustainable management for mine-waste reservoir.

The energy amplification factor transmitted from the excitation source to the response end cannot be identified quickly and accurately using the method of obtaining modal frequency combined with damping through modal frequency resonance. As a result, the above method cannot be used to further evaluate the effect of structural improvement. In this paper, a frequency difference sensitivity method is proposed in order to improve the efficiency of the above identification and evaluation processes while also guaranteeing accuracy. Firstly, a theoretical model suitable for the damping and rigid-body-mode frequency range of the cooling module is established according to the frequency difference between the excitation frequency, .system mode frequency, and vibration response sensitivity. Then, the accuracy and effect of the model are studied from the perspective of a simulation and experiment. The model can be used to identify and evaluate the resonance problem of the vehicle cooling module quickly and accurately. The energy amplification factor of the fan to the passive end of the cooling module can be efficiently predicted using the frequency difference sensitivity method proposed in this paper while ensuring accuracy. The quantized noise-reduction effect of the interior before and after the improvement can be efficiently predicted and evaluated using said model. The literature shows that the resonance of a vehicle cooling module can be identified and evaluated quickly and accurately via the frequency difference sensitivity method, which can overcome the problems that the conventional modal frequency resonance method encounters in identifying and evaluating quickly.

Advances in single-cell sequencing and data analysis have made it possible to infer biological trajectories spanning heterogeneous cell populations based on transcriptome variation. These trajectories yield a wealth of novel insights into dynamic processes such as development and differentiation. However, trajectory analysis relies on an assumption of trajectory continuity, and experimental limitations preclude some real-world scenarios from meeting this condition. The current lack of assessment metrics makes it difficult to ascertain if/when a given trajectory deviates from continuity, and what impact such a divergence would have on inference accuracy is unclear. By analyzing simulated breaks introduced into in silico and real single-cell data, we found that discontinuity caused precipitous drops in the accuracy of trajectory inference. We then generate a simple scoring algorithm for assessing trajectory continuity, and found that continuity assessments in real-world cases of intestinal stem cell development and CD8 + T cells differentiation efficiently identifies trajectories consistent with empirical knowledge. This assessment approach can also be used in cases where a priori knowledge is lacking to screen a pool of inferred lineages for their adherence to presumed continuity, and serve as a means for weighing higher likelihood trajectories for validation via empirical studies, as exemplified by our case studies in psoriatic arthritis and acute kidney injury. Magnetorheological damper (MRD) has been successfully applied to vehicle suspension systems as an intelligent core component. Most conventional MRDs have closed rectangle-shaped magnetic circuits, resulting in a short effective working length and negligible damping force. To address the above issues, a novel full-channel effective MRD with trapezoidal magnetic rings (FEMRD_TMR) is proposed. The trapezoidal magnetic ring can shunt the magnetic circuit, distributing it evenly along the damping channel and increasing the effective working length. Additionally, which has the same variation trend as the magnetic flux through it, makes the magnetic induction intensity distribution more uniform to reduce the magnetic saturation problem. Theoretically analyzing the damping characteristics of the FEMRD_TMR, a quasi-static model is developed to forecast the output damping force. The structural design of MRD is challenging since conventional quasi-static models rely on the yield stress of magnetorheological fluid (MRF) to reflect the rheological property, which cannot be directly observed and is challenging to calculate. The Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy neural network and a unique magnetic circuit computation are offered as a novel quasi-static modeling approach to address the issue. The MRF's yield stress is linearized into magnetic induction intensity functions by the T-S fuzzy neural network and then converted into the MRD's structural size by the special magnetic circuit calculation. Therefore, the proposed quasi-static model can directly reflect the relationship between the damping force and structure size, simplifying MRD's structure design. The novel quasi-static model is shown to be more straightforward and understandable than the conventional Bingham quasi-static model and to have approximately accurate damping force prediction when compared to experimental data.

Nonpharmaceutical policies for epidemic prevention and control have been extensively used since the outbreak of COVID-19. Policies ultimately work by limiting individual behavior. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of policies by combining macro nonpharmaceutical policies with micro-individual going-out behavior. For different going out scenarios triggered by individual physiological safety needs, friendship needs, and family needs, this paper categorizes policies with significant differences in intensity, parameterizes the key contents of the policies, and simulates and analyzes the effectiveness of the policies in different going-out scenarios with simulation methods. The empirical results show that enhancing policy intensity can effectively improve policy effectiveness. Among different types of policies, restricting the times of going out is more effective. Further, the effect of controlling going out based on physiological safety needs is better than other needs. We also evaluate the policy effectiveness of 26 global countries or regions. The results show that the policy effectiveness varies among 26 countries or regions. The quantifiable reference provided by this study facilitates decision makers to establish policy and practices for epidemic prevention and control.

Accurately predicting the number of severe and critical COVID-19 patients is critical for the treatment and control of the epidemic. Social media data have gained great popularity and widespread application in various research domains. The viral-related infodemic outbreaks have occurred alongside the COVID-19 outbreak. This paper aims to discover trustworthy sources of social media data to improve the prediction performance of severe and critical COVID-19 patients. The innovation of this paper lies in three aspects. First, it builds an improved prediction model based on machine learning. This model helps predict the number of severe and critical COVID-19 patients on a specific urban or regional scale. The effectiveness of the prediction model, shown as accuracy and satisfactory robustness, is verified by a case study of the lockdown in Hubei Province. Second, it finds the transition path of the impact of social media data for predicting the number of severe and critical COVID-19 patients. Third, this paper provides a promising and powerful model for COVID-19 prevention and control. The prediction model can help medical organizations to realize a prediction of COVID-19 severe and critical patients in multi-stage with lead time in specific areas. This model can guide the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other clinic institutions to expand the monitoring channels and research methods concerning COVID-19 by using web-based social media data. The model can also facilitate optimal scheduling of medical resources as well as prevention and control policy formulation.

Covalent modification of carbon nanotubes is a promising strategy for engineering their electronic structures. However, keeping modification sites in registration with a nanotube lattice is challenging. We report a solution using DNA-directed, guanine (G)-specific cross-linking chemistry. Through DNA screening we identify a sequence, C3GC7GC3, whose reaction with an (8,3) enantiomer yields minimum disorder-induced Raman mode intensities and photoluminescence Stokes shift, suggesting ordered defect array formation. Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy shows that the C3GC7GC3 functionalized (8,3) has an ordered helical structure with a 6.5 angstroms periodicity. Reaction mechanism analysis suggests that the helical periodicity arises from an array of G-modified carbon-carbon bonds separated by a fixed distance along an armchair helical line. Our findings may be used to remodel nanotube lattices for novel electronic properties.

With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, soil contamination with heavy metal (HM) has gradually become a global environmental problem. Lead (Pb) is one of the most abundant toxic metals in soil and high concentrations of Pb can inhibit plant growth, harm human health, and damage soil properties, including quality and stability. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are a type of obligate symbiotic soil microorganism forming symbiotic associations with most terrestrial plants, which play an essential role in the remediation of HM-polluted soils. In this study, we investigated the effects of AMF on the stability of soil aggregates under Pb stress in a pot experiment. The results showed that the hyphal density (HLD) and spore density (SPD) of the AMF in the soil were significantly reduced at Pb stress levels of 1000 mg kg−1 and 2000 mg kg−1. AMF inoculation strongly improved the concentration of glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP). The percentage of soil particles >2 mm and 2−1 mm in the AMF-inoculation treatment was higher than that in the non-AMF-inoculation treatment, while the Pb stress increased the percentage of soil particles <0.053 mm and 0.25−0.53 mm. HLD, total glomalin-related soil protein (T-GRSP), and easily extractable glomalin-related soil protein (EE-GRSP) were the three dominant factors regulating the stability of the soil aggregates, based on the random forest model analysis. Furthermore, the structural equation modeling analysis indicated that the Pb stress exerted an indirect effect on the soil-aggregate stability by regulating the HLD or the GRSP, while only the GRSP had a direct effect on the mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD). The current study increases the understanding of the mechanism through which soil degradation is caused by Pb stress, and emphasizes the crucial importance of glomalin in maintaining the soil-aggregate stability in HM-contaminated ecosystems.

The dust on indoor and outdoor surfaces of the window glasses were collected using sterile cotton balls in 11 cities from China. Two sampling campaigns were conducted with the time interval of 7 days to investigate the accumulation especially during the Spring festival holidays. Twenty-nine perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA) were quantified to investigate concentration, composition, and toddlers' exposure. The concentrations of ∑PFAA ranged from no detection (nd) to 43 ng/m2 (mean 8.9 ± 10 ng/m2). Perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) was detected in 78% samples and accounted for 55 ± 21% of ∑PFAA concentrations. 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA) and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) were detected in more than 50% samples indicating the use of alternatives. Fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (FTCA) and fluorotelomer unsaturated acid (FTUCA) were found in the dust, implying the degradation of fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOH). The highest concentration of ∑PFAA (43 ng/m2) was found in outdoor dust from Xinzhou, Shanxi Province. Higher ∑PFAA concentrations were found in indoor dust than outdoor in 6 paired samples (3 from Feb. 14 and 3 from Feb. 21). In Tianjin and Handan, the concentrations of ∑PFAA from outdoor surfaces were higher in sampling campaign I (SC I, Feb. 21) than in sampling campaign II (SC II, Feb. 14), implying intensive outdoor release. The exposure of 2-year-old toddlers to PFAA via hand-to-mouth ingestion and dermal absorption was estimated; the mean values of intake were 2.1 and 1.5 pg/kg body weight, respectively, assuming an exposure time of 1 h.

To prepare PIs (polyimides) with desirable thermal and mechanical properties is highly demanded due to their widespread applications in flexible optoelectronic devices and printed circuit boards. Here, the PI films of BPDA/4,4'-ODA, BPDA/3,4'-ODA, PMDA/4,4'-ODA, PMDA/3,4'-ODA systems were prepared, and it was found that the PIs with 3,4'-ODA always exhibit a high modulus compared with the PIs with 4,4'-ODA. To disclose the mechanism of high-modulus PI films with 3,4'-ODA, amorphous PI models and uniaxial drawing PI models were established and calculated based on MD simulation. The PI structural deformations at different length scales, i.e., molecular chain cluster scale and repeat unit scale, under the same stress were detailed and analyzed, including the variation of chain conformation, bond length, bond angle, internal rotation energy, and torsion angle. The results indicate that PIs with 3,4-ODA have higher internal rotation energy and smaller deformation with the same stress, consistent with the high modulus.

In recent years, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing system has been rapidly developed and applied in accurate estimation of crop parameters and yield at farm scale. To develop the major contribution of UAV multispectral images in predicting winter wheat leaf area index (LAI), chlorophyll content (called soil and plant analyzer development [SPAD]), and yield under different water treatments (low water level, medium water level, and high water level), vegetation indices (VIs) originating from UAV multispectral images were used during key winter wheat growth stages. The estimation performances of the models (linear regression, quadratic polynomial regression, and exponential and multiple linear regression models) on the basis of VIs were compared to get the optimal prediction method of crop parameters and yield. Results showed that LAI and SPAD derived from VIs both had high correlations compared with measured data, with determination coefficients of 0.911 and 0.812 (multivariable regression [MLR] model, normalized difference VI [NDVI], soil adjusted VI [SAVI], enhanced VI [EVI], and difference VI [DVI]), 0.899 and 0.87 (quadratic polynomial regression, NDVI), and 0.749 and 0.829 (quadratic polynomial regression, NDVI) under low, medium, and high water levels, respectively. The LAI and SPAD derived from VIs had better potential in estimating winter wheat yield by using multivariable linear regressions, compared to the estimation yield based on VIs directly derived from UAV multispectral images alone by using linear regression, quadratic polynomial regression, and exponential models. When crop parameters (LAI and SPAD) in the flowering period were adopted to estimate yield by using multiple linear regressions, a high correlation of 0.807 was found, while the accuracy was over 87%. Importing LAI and SPAD obtained from UAV multispectral imagery based on VIs into the yield estimation model could significantly enhance the estimation performance. This study indicates that the multivariable linear regression could accurately estimate winter wheat LAI, SPAD, and yield under different water treatments, which has a certain reference value for the popularization and application of UAV remote sensing in precision agriculture.

Nano-Mg(OH)2 is attracting great attention as adsorbent for pre-concentration and recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from low-concentration solution, due to its superior removal efficiency for REEs and environmental friendliness. However, the nanoparticles also cause some severe problems during application, including aggregation, blockage in fixed-bed column, as well as the difficulties in separation and reuse. Herein, in order to avoid the mentioned problems, a carbon cloth (CC) supported nano-Mg(OH)2 (nano-Mg(OH)2@CC) was synthesized by electrodeposition. The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that the interlaced nano-sheet of Mg(OH)2 grew firmly and uniformly on the surface of carbon cloth fibers. Batch adsorption experiments of Eu(III) indicated that the nano-Mg(OH)2@CC composite maintained the excellent adsorption performance of nano-Mg(OH)2 toward Eu(III). After adsorption, the Eu containing composite was calcined under nitrogen atmosphere. The content of Eu2O3 in the calcined material was as high as 99.66%. Fixed-bed column experiments indicated that no blockage for Mg(OH)2@CC composite was observed during the treatment, while the complete blockage of occurred to nano-Mg(OH)2 at an effluent volume of 240 mL. Moreover, the removal efficiency of Mg(OH)2@CC was still higher than 90% until 4,200 mL of effluent volume. This work provides a promising method for feasible application of nanoadsorbents in fixed-bed process to recycle low-concentration REEs from wastewater.

Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of psychological disorders, sleep disturbance, and stressful life events in Chinese patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and healthy controls, to assess the correlation between psychological and disease-related variables, and finally to detect powerful factors in predicting anxiety and depression. AS patients diagnosed with the modified New York criteria and healthy controls were enrolled from China. Participants completed a set of questionnaires, including demographic and disease parameters, Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), Zung self-rating depression scale (SDS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI), and the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS). The relationship between psychological and other variables was explored. Stepwise multiple regression was used to determine the contributors to each disorder. Of all the 2772 AS patients, 79.1% were male. Mean age was 28.99 ± 8.87 years. Prevalence of anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance was 31.6% (95% CI, 29.9, to 33.4), 59.3% (95% CI, 57.5, to 61.2), and 31.0% (95% CI, 29.3, to 36.7), respectively. 35.3% had stimulus of psychological and social elements (SPSE). Compared with healthy controls, AS patients had more severe psychological disorders, sleep disturbance, and stressful life events (P < 0.01). SDS, overall pain, BASFI, and sleep disturbance were significant contributors of the SAS scores (P < 0.03). SAS, less years of education, and sleep duration were significant contributors of SDS (P < 0.01). AS patients had more anxiety, depression, stressful life events, and sleep disturbance than healthy controls. Pain, functional limitation, sleep disturbance, and education were major contributors to psychological disorders.

The interaction of acteoside with pepsin has been investigated using fluorescence spectra, UV/vis absorption spectra, three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence spectra and synchronous fluorescence spectra, along with a molecular docking method. The fluorescence experiments indicate that acteoside can quench the intrinsic fluorescence of pepsin through combined quenching at a low concentration of acteoside, and static quenching at high concentrations. Thermodynamic analysis suggests that hydrogen bonds and van der Waal's forces are the main forces between pepsin and acteoside. According to the theory of Förster's non-radiation energy transfer, the binding distance between pepsin and acteoside was calculated to be 2.018 nm, which implies that energy transfer occurs between acteoside and pepsin. Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) is a standard instrument regularly used to assess disease activity of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). However, the well-being of a patient is also affected by impairment of function as well as psychological status and other factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate if psychological status, stressful life events, and sleep quality contribute significantly to BASDAI. Six hundred eighty-three AS patients satisfying the Modified New York Criteria for AS were recruited from the rheumatology clinics of seven hospitals in China. Patients with other concomitant disorders were excluded. Participants were requested to complete a set of clinical examinations and the following questionnaires: Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Questionnaire (PSQI), Health Assessment Questionnaire for Spondyloarthropathies (HAQ-S), and Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS). Spearman correlation analysis showed that BASDAI was highly associated with degree and duration of morning stiffness, overall pain, nocturnal back pain, overall back pain, anxiety, and BASFI (all P < 0.001), but were not associated with education, HAQ-S, and sleep medication in PSQI (P > 0.05). Multiple stepwise regression analysis indicated that overall pain was the maximal statistical contribution in predicting disease activity (standardized coefficient, 0.335). In hierarchic multiple regression analysis, psychological variables added an only additional 2.7% to the overall R(2) beyond that accounted for by demographic and medical variables, resulting in a final R(2) of 53.5%. Although BASDAI is a very good measurement of pain and stiffness and to a certain extent effect of functional impairment in AS, it barely takes into account psychological status, stress life events, and sleep quality These factors should be evaluated by other modalities.

Ligupurpuroside A is one of the major glycoside in Ku-Din-Cha, a type of Chinese functional tea. In order to better understand its digestion and metabolism in humans, the interaction between Ligupurpuroside A and pepsin has been investigated by fluorescence spectra, UV-vis absorption spectra and synchronous fluorescence spectra along with molecular docking method. The fluorescence experiments indicate that Ligupurpuroside A can effectively quench the intrinsic fluorescence of pepsin through a combined quenching way at the low concentration of Ligupurpuroside A, and a static quenching procedure at the high concentration. The binding constant, binding sites of Ligupurpuroside A with pepsin have been calculated. The thermodynamic analysis suggests that non-covalent reactions, including electrostatic force, hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bond are the main forces stabilizing the complex. According to the Förster's non-radiation energy transfer theory, the binding distance between pepsin and Ligupurpuroside A was calculated to be 3.15 nm, which implies that energy transfer occurs between pepsin and Ligupurpuroside A. Conformation change of pepsin was observed from UV-vis absorption spectra and synchronous fluorescence spectra under experimental conditions. In addition, all these experimental results have been validated by the protein-ligand docking studies which show that Ligupurpuroside A is located in the cleft between the domains of pepsin.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate differences in genetic risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Han Chinese as compared with Europeans. METHODS: A genome-wide association study was conducted in China with 952 patients and 943 controls, and 32 variants were followed up in 2,132 patients and 2,553 controls. A transpopulation meta-analysis with results from a large European RA study was also performed to compare the genetic architecture across the 2 ethnic remote populations. RESULTS: Three non-major histocompatibility complex (non-MHC) loci were identified at the genome-wide significance level, the effect sizes of which were larger in anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA)-positive patients than in ACPA-negative patients. These included 2 novel variants, rs12617656, located in an intron of DPP4 (odds ratio [OR] 1.56, P = 1.6 × 10(-21) ), and rs12379034, located in the coding region of CDK5RAP2 (OR 1.49, P = 1.1 × 10(-16) ), as well as a variant at the known CCR6 locus, rs1854853 (OR 0.71, P = 6.5 × 10(-15) ). The analysis of ACPA-positive patients versus ACPA-negative patients revealed that rs12617656 at the DPP4 locus showed a strong interaction effect with ACPAs (P = 5.3 × 10(-18) ), and such an interaction was also observed for rs7748270 at the MHC locus (P = 5.9 × 10(-8) ). The transpopulation meta-analysis showed genome-wide overlap and enrichment in association signals across the 2 populations, as confirmed by prediction analysis. CONCLUSION: This study has expanded the list of alleles that confer risk of RA, provided new insight into the pathogenesis of RA, and added empirical evidence to the emerging polygenic nature of complex trait variation driven by common genetic variants.

It has been found that the hemostatic system is activated following a brain injury. To explore the role of D-dimer in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), this prospective study aimed to evaluate the association between serum D-dimer concentration, clinical outcome and radiographic findings of ICH patients in the emergency department (ED). Patients with acute (<24 hours) spontaneous ICH were enrolled in this study. The D-dimer concentration was related to: baseline ICH volume (r=0.198, p=0.01); Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score 3-8 (p=0.01); GCS score 13-15 (p=0.002); midline shift >15 mm (p=0.016); and to subarachnoid extension of the blood (p<0.0001). Diabetes mellitus (odds ratio [OR]: 2.93; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1-7.76, p=0.031), ICH volume (OR: 1.16; 95% CI: 1.07-1.27, p<0.0001) and D-dimer concentration (OR: 2.72; 95% CI: 1.08-6.9, p=0.002) were associated with 30-day mortality. This study shows that in patients with spontaneous ICH, a higher initial D-dimer concentration is associated with higher 30-day mortality.
