We report on 8 patients who presented with acute abdominal pain, palpable mass and a rapid decrease in hemoglobin. Intravenous pyelogram, ultrasound and computed tomography had been performed but the underlying cause of the perirenal hematoma couldn't be detected. Surgical exploration was decided and 6 total and 2 partial nephrectomies were performed. The pathological report revealed 4 adenocarcinomas and 4 angiomyolipomas. The possibility of spontaneous rupture of the kidney in the evaluation of cases of acute abdomen is particularly stressed.

The scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used in an attempt to accurately score morphologic differences in sperm, but early attempts were confounded by tangled preparations. In order to obtain an evenly spread sample, a new technique was evolved where a suspension of sperm cells was filtered and the whole filter prepared for the microscope. Sperm samples were then examined from men with and without obvious clinical and Doppler evidence of a varicocele. All samples were coded and scored; statistically significant differences in sperm morphology between the two groups of men were found. Our conclusions are that the SEM is worthy of further evaluation as a tool in the accurate scoring of sperm morphology, and the presence of a varicocele does appear to have an effect on sperm structure.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether routine prolactin measurement was of use when investigating men with infertility. Prolactin levels were slightly higher in men with primary infertility, compared with men with secondary infertility and a fertile control group. Although this slight increase was statistically significant, most readings were within the laboratory normal range in all groups, and we did not find any clinically significant cases of hyperprolactinemia. We conclude that routine prolactin estimation is not justified unless there are other indications, e.g., impotence, dialysis, or a history of previous pituitary disease.
