RESUMO

INTRODUCTION@#We investigated the knowledge, attitudes and practice (KAP) towards coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its related preventive measures in Singaporeans aged ≥60 years.@*METHODS@#This was a population-based, cross-sectional, mixed-methods study (13 May 2020-9 June 2020) of participants aged ≥ 60 years. Self-reported KAP about ten symptoms and six government-endorsed preventive measures related to COVID-19 were evaluated. Multivariable regression models were used to identify sociodemographic and health-related factors associated with KAP in our sample. Associations between knowledge/attitude scores and practice categories were determined using logistic regression. Seventy-eight participants were interviewed qualitatively about the practice of additional preventive measures and data were analysed thematically.@*RESULTS@#Mean awareness score of COVID-19 symptoms was 7.2/10. The most known symptom was fever (93.0%) and the least known was diarrhoea (33.5%). Most participants knew all six preventive measures (90.4%), perceived them as effective (78.7%) and practised 'wear a mask' (97.2%). Indians, Malays and participants living in smaller housing had poorer mean scores for knowledge of COVID-19 symptoms. Older participants had poorer attitudes towards preventive measures. Compared to Chinese, Indians had lower odds of practising three out of six recommendations. A one-point increase in score for knowledge and attitudes regarding preventive measures resulted in higher odds of always practising three of six and two of six measures, respectively. Qualitative interviews revealed use of other preventive measures, for example, maintaining a healthy lifestyle.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Elderly Singaporeans displayed high levels of KAP about COVID-19 and its related preventive measures, with a positive association between levels of knowledge/attitude and practice. However, important ethnic and socioeconomic disparities were evident, indicating that key vulnerabilities remain, which require immediate attention.

RESUMO

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/F) are some of the most environmentally recalcitrant and toxic compounds. They occur naturally and as by-products of anthropogenic activity. Sydney Harbour Estuary (Sydney, Australia), is heavily contaminated with PCDD/F. Analysis of sediment cores revealed that the contamination source area in Homebush Bay continues to have one of the highest levels of PCDD/F contamination in the world (5207 pg WHO-TEQ g-1) with >50% of the toxicity attributed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD), the most toxic PCDD/F congener. Comparison of congener profiles at the contamination source area with surrounding bays and historical data provided evidence for the attenuation of 2,3,7,8-TCDD and other congeners at the source area. This finding was supported by the detection of di-, mono- and unchlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin. Microbial community analysis of sediments by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed an abundance of lineages from the class Dehalococcoidia (up to 15% of the community), including the genus Dehalobium (up to 0.5%). Anaerobic seawater enrichment cultures using perchloroethene as more biologically available growth substrate enriched the Dehalobium population by more than six-fold. The enrichment culture then proved capable of reductively dechlorinating 2,3,7,8-TCDD to 2,3,7-TriCDD and octachlorodibenzo-p-dibenzodioxin (OCDD) to hepta and hexa congeners. This work is the first to show microbial reductive dehalogenation of 2,3,7,8-TCDD with a bacterium from outside the Dehalococcoides genus, and one of only a few that demonstrates PCDD/F dechlorination in a marine environment.

RESUMO

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Neurodegeneration is an early event in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). We assessed the white matter microstructural integrity of the visual pathway in diabetes patients vs. healthy subjects, and investigated the advantages of generalized Q-sampling imaging (GQI) in the assessment of the visual pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T1-weighted, T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, and simultaneous multislice- diffusion sequences were acquired from 21 DR patients, 29 diabetes patients without DR (NDR group), and 28 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Diffusion source images were reconstructed to GQI. Region of interest (ROI)-based analysis was utilized to evaluate microstructural alterations in the visual pathway. Multivariate linear regression analysis (forward stepwise method) was performed to investigate associations between clinical data and mean GQI parameters. RESULTS: ROI-based analyses indicated that the GQI parameters generalized fractional anisotropy, quantitative anisotropy (QA), and normalized QA (NQA) were significantly lower in the NDR group than in the healthy controls, and even lower in the DR group than in the NDR group. Disease duration was significantly and negatively correlated with mean generalized fractional anisotropy and mean NQA. CONCLUSION: GQI could sensitively and non-invasively evaluate the visual pathway in diabetes patients. The nerve fibers of the visual pathway were damaged before the onset of retinopathy, and this damage was aggravated after retinopathy onset, as a consequence of long exposure to hyperglycemia.

RESUMO

Two highly efficient metal-organic framework catalysts TJU-68-NHPI and TJU-68-NDHPI have been successfully synthesized through solvothermal reactions of which the frameworks are merged with N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) units, resulting in the decoration of pore surfaces with highly active nitroxyl catalytic sites. When t-butyl nitrite (TBN) is used as co-catalyst, the as-synthesized MOFs are demonstrated to be highly efficient and recyclable catalysts for a novel three-phase heterogeneous oxidation of activated C-H bond of primary and secondary alcohols, and benzyl compounds under mild conditions. Based on the high efficiency and selectivity, an environmentally benign system with good sustainability, mild conditions, simple work-up procedure has been established for practical oxidation of a wide range of substrates.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although the impact of vision-related quality of life (VRQoL) is assessed optimally using binocular visual acuity (VA), uniocular VA remains the preferred measurement method in clinic-based and epidemiologic studies. We compared the impact of distance presenting binocular VA and uniocular VA in the better-seeing (better-eye VA) and worse-seeing (worse-eye VA) eye on VRQoL. DESIGN: The Singapore Chinese Eye Study 2 (2015-2017), a population-based, cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: One thousand eight hundred twenty-two individuals (mean age, 66.2 years [standard deviation, 8.9 years]; 51.1% women) were included. METHODS: Presenting uniocular VA and binocular VA were assessed using a logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution number chart at a distance of 4 m under standard lighting by trained and certified study optometrists. Multiple linear regression models were constructed to determine the independent associations between binocular VA, better-eye VA, and worse-eye VA and the outcome (VRQoL), adjusted for potential confounders, including age, gender, socioeconomic status, and presence of comorbidities. In addition, a cluster sandwich estimator was used to determine if any differences in ß estimates between the associations were statistically significant. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Vision-related quality of life was measured using Rasch-transformed scores from the emotional, mobility, and reading domains of the Impact of Visual Impairment (IVI) questionnaire. RESULTS: Although every 2-line increase (worsening) in binocular VA and uniocular VA was associated independently with decrements in emotional, mobility, and reading IVI scores (P < 0.05 for all), the reductions in all VRQoL domains were substantially lower (P < 0.1) when using either the better-eye VA (compared with binocular VA ß-estimates, -27.8%, -19.4%, and -24.2% difference in emotional, mobility, and reading IVI scores, respectively) or worse-eye VA (compared with binocular VA ß estimates, -38.9%, -58.1%, and -57.5% reduction in emotional, mobility, and reading IVI scores, respectively) to quantify vision loss. CONCLUSIONS: Uniocular VA seems to underestimate the impact of vision loss on VRQoL indices compared with binocular VA. Our data suggest that researchers, clinicians, and policy planners should consider using binocular instead of uniocular measures of VA in patient-reported outcome evaluation of vision loss because it may better reflect its impact on VRQoL.

RESUMO

Na3V2(PO4)2O2F (NVPOF) is attracting great interest due to its large capacity and high working voltage. However, poor electronic conductivity limits the electrochemical performance of NVPOF. Herein, we fabricate N/P-dual-doped carbon-coated NVPOF microspheres (labeled as NVPOF@P/N/C) via a hydrothermal process followed by heat treatment. This microsphere-structured NVPOF@P/N/C composite has a relatively high tap density of 1.22 g/cm3. TEM and XPS results reveal that the dual-doped carbon layer is tightly coated on the NVPOF surface due to the bridging effect of P and has a good protective effect on NVPOF. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that a N/P-dual-doped carbon layer is advantageous to achieve higher electronic conductivity and lower migration activation energy than those of the undoped and single N- or P-doped carbon layer. As a cathode material for a sodium-ion battery (SIB), NVPOF@P/N/C exhibits high capacity (128 mAh/g at 0.5 C and 122 mAh/g at 2 C) and ultralong cycle performance (only 0.037% capacity fading rate per cycle in 500 cycles at 2 C). We believe that the NVPOF@P/N/C composite is appealing for high-performance SIBs with large energy density.

RESUMO

Measuring similarity between molecules is an important part of virtual screening (VS) experiments deployed during the early stages of drug discovery. Most widely used methods for evaluating the similarity of molecules use molecular fingerprints to encode structural information. While similarity methods using fingerprint encodings are efficient, they do not consider all the relevant aspects of molecular structure. In this paper, we describe a quantum-inspired graph-based molecular similarity (GMS) method for ligand-based VS. The GMS method is formulated as a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problem that can be solved using a quantum annealer, providing the opportunity to take advantage of this nascent and potentially groundbreaking technology. In this study, we consider various features relevant to ligand-based VS, such as pharmacophore features and three-dimensional atomic coordinates, and include them in the GMS method. We evaluate this approach on various datasets from the DUD_LIB_VS_1.0 library. Our results show that using three-dimensional atomic coordinates as features for comparison yields higher early enrichment values. In addition, we evaluate the performance of the GMS method against conventional fingerprint approaches. The results demonstrate that the GMS method outperforms fingerprint methods for most of the datasets, presenting a new alternative in ligand-based VS with the potential for future enhancement.

RESUMO

Layered LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (NCM333) is successfully coated by fast ionic conductor LiTi2(PO4)3 (LTP) via a wet chemical method. The effects of LTP on the physicochemical properties and electrochemical performance are studied. The results reveal that a highly layered structure of NCM333 can be well maintained with less cation mixing after LTP coating. LTP of about 5 nm thickness is coated on the surface of NCM333. Such an LTP coating layer can effectively suppress the side reactions between NCM333 and electrolyte but will not hinder the lithium ion transmission. As a result, LTP-coated NCM333 owns an improved capability and cyclic performance, for example, NCM333/LTP delivers an initial capacity as high as 121.0 mA h g-1 with a capacity retention ratio of 82.3% after 200 cycles at 10 C, whereas NCM333 only has an initial capacity of 120.4 mA h g-1 with a very low capacity retention ratio of 66.4%. This method of using a fast ionic conductor like LTP as a coating material may provide a simple and effective strategy to modify those electrode materials with poor cyclic performance.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the independent impact of the incidence and progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) on visual functioning (VF). DESIGN: Population-based cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 518 participants aged 40 to 80 years (baseline visit 2007-2009 and second visit 6 years later, 2013-2015), with diabetes, clinical data, and VF information at both visits. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: VF-7 scores, converted to interval-level person measures (in logits) using Rasch analysis. METHODS: Incident DR was defined using the Modified Airlie House classification as "none or minimal" DR at baseline and at least mild nonproliferative DR at follow-up; incident vision-threatening DR (VTDR; severe nonproliferative DR, proliferative DR, and/or clinically significant macular edema) as no VTDR at baseline, and present at follow-up; and DR progression as at least a 1-step worsening in DR at follow-up from mild or worse status at baseline. The longitudinal associations between incident DR, VTDR, and DR progression, as well as change in composite and individual item scores of VF, were assessed using multivariable linear regression models. RESULTS: Of the 518 participants (mean age ± standard deviation [SD] 59.8±9.0 years; 47.7% female), 42 (9.8%), 14 (2.8%), and 32 (42.7%) had incident DR, incident VTDR, and DR progression, respectively, at follow-up. In models adjusting for traditional confounders, persons with incident DR and VTDR had a 13.7% (ß = -0.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.96 to -0.24; P = 0.001) and 23% (ß = -1.00; 95% CI, -1.61 to -0.38; P = 0.001) reduction in mean VF scores at follow-up. Furthermore, individuals with incident DR had similar independent reductions in scores for 7 individual items of the VF-7, whereas those with incident VTDR had the largest reductions for activities like cooking (31%; P = 0.003), reading the newspaper (29.6%; P < 0.001), and seeing street signs (28%, P = 0.001) at follow-up. Progression of DR was not independently associated with change in overall VF (ß = -0.18; 95% CI, -1.00, 0.64; P = 0.660). CONCLUSIONS: Incident DR, particularly vision-threatening stages, has a substantial negative impact on people's overall vision-dependent functioning and specific activities such as cooking, seeing street signs, and reading the newspaper. Our findings reinforce the need for strategies to prevent or delay the development of DR.

RESUMO

Aim To study the effect of genistein on apoptosis in human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells and the underlying mechanisms. Methods MTT as-say was used to observe the inhibitory rate on human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells treated with genistein. Colony assay was used to determine the cell colony formation rate on human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells treated with genistein. Western blot was used to detect the expression of Bcl-2, Bax, caspase-3,NF-κB, ERK, p-ERK, JNK and p-JNK in human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells treated with genistein. Results The results of MTT assay showed that genistein inhibited the viability of breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells in a time- and concentration-de-pendent manner. Colony assay suggested that genistein had an antiproliferative effect on MDA-MB-231 cells. The expression levels of Bcl-2, NF-κB and p-ERK were significantly down-regulated compared with con-trol(P < 0.01). However, the expression of Bax, caspase-3 and p-JNK was significantly up-regulated(P<0.01). Conclusions Genistein could inhibit the growth of human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells and induce apoptosis, and the mechanism may be related to the inhibition of NF-κB, ERK/MAPK signaling path-ways and the activation of JNK/MAPK signaling path-way.

RESUMO

Li3V2(PO4)3/C (LVP/C) composites have been modified by different ways of Zr-incorporation via ultrasonic-assisted solid-state reaction. The difference in the effect on the physicochemical properties and the electrochemical performance of LVP between Zr-doping and ZrO2-coating has also been investigated. Compared with pristine LVP/C, Zr-incorporated LVP/C composites exhibit better rate capability and cycling stability. In particular, the LVP/C-Zr electrode delivers the highest initial capacity of 150.4 mA h g-1 at 10C with a capacity retention ratio of 88.4% after 100 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance of Zr-incorporated LVP/C samples (LVZrP/C and LVP/C-Zr) is attributed to the increased ionic conductivity and electronic conductivity, the improved stability of the LVP structure, and the decreased charge-transfer resistance.

RESUMO

Monoclinic Li3V2(PO4)3/C (LVP/C) and Li3V1.95Fe0.05(PO4)3/C (LVFP/C) composites were successfully modified by cobalt incorporation. The effects of cobalt incorporation on the structure, morphology and electrochemical performance of the LVP/C and LVFP/C composites were systematically investigated. The results show that most Co exists in the form of CoO and forms a hybrid layer with the carbon coating on the surface of the LVP and LVFP particles; moreover, a small part of Co enters into the LVP or LVFP lattices due to atomic diffusion. Compared with LVP/C and LVFP/C, Co-incorporated samples exhibit better electrochemical performance. In particular, under the common effect of doping and a hybrid layer (carbon and metal oxides) coating, the LVFP/C-Co electrode displays a prominent initial capacity of 124.7 mA h g-1 and a very low capacity fading of ∼0.04% per cycle even after 500 cycles at 20 C. This novel co-modification method with cation doping and a hybrid layer (carbon and metal oxide) coating is a highly effective way to improve the electrochemical performance and has great potential to be easily used to modify other cathode materials with poor electrical conductivity.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common chronic microvascular diabetic complication. The presence of DR may indicate microcirculatory dysfunction in other organ systems besides visual morbidity. The objective of this study was to develop a simple diabetic retinopathy risk score to identify DR in Chinese overweight/obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A multicentre hospital-based cross-sectional study was carried out in Guangdong Province between August 2011 and March 2012. The evaluated 2699 patients included 1263 males and 1436 females, with an average age of 59.4 ± 13.0 years. RESULTS: The diabetic retinopathy risk score was conducted by age, duration of DM, history of antihypertensive drug treatment, and waist circumference. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve for DR was 0.700 (95% CI 0.671-0.729). Comparing Youden's index of different values, the optimal cut-off point was 20 to predict DR. The odds ratio for one unit increase in the diabetic retinopathy risk score associated with the risk of DR was 1.104 (95% CI 1.089-1.120). CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the diabetic retinopathy risk score could be a reliable primary screening tool for the presence of DR in Chinese overweight/obese patients with T2DM.

RESUMO

Cadmium-incorporated Li2FeSiO4/C composites have been successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction assisted with refluxing. The effect and mechanism of Cd-modification on the electrochemical performance of Li2FeSiO4/C were investigated in detail by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectra, transmission electron microscopy, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and Doppler broadening spectrum, and electrochemical measurements. The results show that Cd not only exists in an amorphous state of CdO on the surface of LFS particles, but also enters into the crystal lattice of LFS. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and Doppler broadening spectrum analyses verify that Cd-incorporation increases the defect concentration and the electronic conductivity of LFS, thus improve the Li(+)-ion diffusion process. Furthermore, our electrochemical measurements verify that an appropriate amount of Cd-incorporation can achieve a satisfied electrochemical performance for LFS/C cathode material.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence and risk factors for dyslipidemia in diabetics with overweight or obesity. METHODS: Diabetics with overweight or obesity were recruited from 62 tertiary and secondary hospitals in Guangdong Province between August 2011 and March 2012. Dyslipidemia was diagnosed as total cholesterol (TC) ≥ 5.7 mmol/L or triglycerides (TG) ≥ 1.7 mmol/L or low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) ≥ 3.6 mmol/L or high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) < 1.29 mmol/L in females or HDL-C < 1.03 mmol/L in males. Binary Logistic regression was used to assess the associations between dyslipidemia and associated risk factors. RESULTS: Dyslipidemia was detected in 3160/3593 (87.9%) diabetics with overweight or obesity. And the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, low blood HDL-C, hypercholesterolemia and high blood LDL-C was 52.5% (1888/3593) , 54.1% (1945/3593), 33.1% (1188/3593) and 27.4% (985/3593) respectively. Among those with dyslipidemia, patients with simple and mixed dyslipidemia accounted for 34.1% and 53.9% respectively. In binary Logistic regression analysis, the presence of dyslipidemia were associated with female gender (OR = 1.593, 95%CI 1.233-2.057), hemoglobinA1c(HbA1c) (OR = 1.120, 95%CI 1.054-1.191), body mass index (OR = 1.084, 95%CI 1.022-1.150), hypertension (OR = 1.331, 95%CI 1.033-1.714), history of diabetes (OR = 1.586, 95%CI 1.186-2.120) and hyperuricacidemia (OR = 2.270, 95%CI 1.642-3.138). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of dyslipidemia is quite high in diabetics with overweight or obesity. The controls of blood pressure, serum uric acid level, blood glucose and body weight may reduce the prevalence of dyslipidemia, prevent and delay the development of cardiovascular complications and reduce the mortality of diabetics with overweight or obesity.

RESUMO

This study investigated the prevalence and determinants of hyperuricemia in Chinese type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with central obesity. A multicentric hospital-based cross-sectional study was carried out in Guangdong Province between August 2011 and March 2012. At each hospital, Chinese T2DM patients with central obesity who were aged over 20 years, whose serum uric acid levels were measured, and who had lived in Guangdong Province for >=1 year, were recruited. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid >420 µmol/L in men and >360 µmol/L in women. Binary logistic regression was used to assess associated risk factors for hyperu-ricemia. A total of 2,917 T2DM patients with central obesity took part. The overall prevalence of hyperuricemia was 32.6% (36.1% for women, 28.4% for men). Binary logistic regression analyses demonstrated that women (OR: 1.576; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.231, 2.018), high BMI (OR: 1.228; 95% CI: 1.094, 1.379), waist cir-cumference (OR: 1.135; 95% CI: 1.009, 1.276), hypertension (OR: 1.603; 95% CI: 1.263, 2.035), high total cho-lesterol (OR: 1.133; 95% CI: 1.002, 1.281), triglycerides (OR: 1.134; 95% CI: 1.069, 1.203), low HDL-cholesterol (OR: 0.820; 95% CI: 0.677, 0.995) and low estimated glomerular filtration rate (OR: 0.840; 95% CI: 0.815, 0.866) were risk factors associated with hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia is prevalent in Chinese T2DM patients with central obesity and is significantly positively associated with women, cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, hypertension and dyslipidemia, and low eGFR.

RESUMO

Reduced graphene oxide modified Li2FeSiO4/C (LFS/(C+rGO)) composite is successfully synthesized by a citric-acid-based sol-gel method and evaluated as cathode material for lithium ion batteries. The LFS/(C+rGO) shows an improved electronic conductivity due to the conductive network formed by reduced graphene oxide nanosheets and amorphous carbon in particles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate an increased diffusion coefficient of lithium ions (2.4 × 10(-11) cm(2) s(-1)) for LFS/(C+rGO) electrode. Compared with LFS with only amorphous carbon, the LFS/(C+rGO) electrode exhibits higher capacity and better cycling stability. It delivers a reversible capacity of 178 mAh g(-1) with a capacity retention ratio of 94.5% after 40 cycles at 0.1 C, and an average capacity of 119 mAh g(-1) at 2 C. The improved performance can be contributed to the reduced crystal size, good particle dispersion, and the improved conductive network between LFS particles.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the current situation and influential factors of blood pressure (BP) control in type 2 diabetic patients with overweight or obesity in Guangdong province. METHODS: From August 2011 to March 2012, type 2 diabetic patients with overweight or obesity were recruited from 60 hospitals in 20 cities of Guangdong province, and received standard questionnaires. The conditions of demographic data, clinical examinations, the most recent laboratory assessment, history of disease and drug therapy were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 4029 patients were collected with age of (58.9 ± 12.9) years, and body mass index (BMI) of (27.28 ± 2.76) kg/m². Among the participants, controlled BP was achieved in 23.8% patients. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that older age, obesity, previous history of hypertension and inadequate glycemic control were the independent factors related to unsatisfactory blood pressure control rate. Among the patients with hypertension, 53.5% took 1 kind of antihypertensive drug, 32.5% took two, and 11.3% took three or more. CONCLUSIONS: Type 2 diabetic patients with overweight or obesity in Guangdong province have poor BP control. Thus, active lifestyle interventions and drug therapy as a comprehensive management way should be taken for the population so as to reduce their cardiovascular events.
