New abietane and tigliane diterpenoids from the roots of Euphorbia fischeriana and their cytotoxic activities.

Three new abietane and two new tigliane diterpenoids were isolated from the roots Euphorbia fischeriana. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and quantum chemical calculation. Compounds 4 and 5 exhibited the inhibitory activities against human cancer cells HeLa and HepG2, with IC50 ranging from 3.54 to 11.45 µM.

Enhanced Immune Response Improves Resistance to Cadmium Stress in Triploid Crucian Carp.

Previous research has indicated that triploid crucian carp (3n fish) have preferential resistance to cadmium (Cd) compared to Carassius auratas red var. (2n fish). In this article, comparative research is further conducted between the 2n and 3n fish in terms of the immune response to Cd-induced stress. Exposure to 9 mg/L Cd for 96 h changed the hepatic function indexes remarkably in the 2n fish, but not in the 3n fish. In the serum of Cd-treated 2n fish, the levels of alanine amino transferase, aspartate aminotransferase, adenosine deaminase, and total bilirubin significantly increased, while the levels of total protein, albumin, lysozyme, and anti-superoxide anion radicals decreased demonstrating hepatotoxicity. By analysis of transcriptome profiles, many immune-related pathways were found to be involved in the response of 3n fish to the Cd-induced stress. Expression levels of the immune genes, including the interleukin genes, tumor necrosis factor super family member genes, chemokine gene, toll-like receptor gene, and inflammatory marker cyclooxygenase 2 gene were significantly enhanced in the hepatopancreas of the Cd-treated 3n fish. In contrast, the expression levels of these genes decreased in the 2n fish. This research provides a theoretical basis for polyploid fish breeding and is helpful for the ecological restoration of water due to pollution.

A two-week single-group longitudinal test of a new sonic-powered toothbrush simulating the 'bass brushing technique' with tapered bristles on the brush head for reduction of dental plaque and gingivitis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a new powered toothbrush with tapered bristles on the brush head for the reduction of dental plaque and gingivitis. METHODS: This was a single-centre, single-group, longitudinal clinical trial. Thirty-two participants who were typical manual toothbrush users were recruited and assigned the sonic-powered brush. Interviews were arranged on the 1st , 4th , and 15th days which represented the baseline (T1 ), middle (T2 ) and final (T3 ) time points, respectively. At each visit, the plaque index (PlI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP) and probing depth (PD) were recorded for the Ramfjord index teeth, gingival crevicular fluid(GCF) samples were collected and the proportions of eight periodontal pathogenic bacteria were analysed. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for comparisons at different time points. RESULTS: PlI was significantly reduced by 41.67% from T1 to T2 (p<0.001) and decreased by 18.57% from T2 to T3 (p=0.003). GI also varied significantly from T1 to T2 (p=0.018) and T1 to T3 (p=0.037). A 35.86% reduction in the BOP percentage occurred after using the sonic-powered toothbrush for 3 days (p=0.001). However, no significant difference was observed in the mean values of PD at different examination intervals (p=0.529). There was no significant difference in the proportions of bacteria between T1 and T3 (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: This research demonstrated the efficacy of the sonic-powered brush handle together with tapered bristles on the brush in reducing plaque and gingivitis within a short time period.

Reactive oxygen species altering the metabolite profile of the marine-derived fungus Dichotomomyces cejpii F31-1.

To investigate the influence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the secondary metabolites of the marine-derived fungus Dichotomomyces cejpii F31-1, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was added to the GPY culture medium. The HPLC chromatogram of the EtOAc extract of the culture broth was distinct from that of the H2O2 free GPY medium. Further study of the metabolites in the GPY medium with H2O2 resulted in the discovery of eight known compounds. Among them, (22E)-5α, 8α-epidioxyergosta-6, 22-dien-3ß-ol (2) and ergosta-4,6,8(14),22-tetraene-3-one (3) were present in the highest concentration, while ergosterol and diketopiperazines are abundant in the H2O2 free medium. Additionally, a new compound, dichocetide D (1) containing a chlorine element and a known ergosterol (10) were isolated from the H2O2 free medium. (22E)-5α, 8α-epidioxyergosta-6, 22-dien-3ß-ol (2) exhibited moderate cytotoxic activity against human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP-C4-2B.

Easy method to determine refractive indices of microspheres and in micro-regions of inhomogeneous media.

We describe an innovative method which can accurately determine the refractive index (RI) of individual microspheres by immersing the microspheres in a medium and analyzing their phase-contrast microscopic images. Compared with the current techniques for microsphere RI measurement, the method has several advantages: it is simple and easy and it cannot only measure the RI of each individual microsphere but also perform measurement simultaneously on all the microspheres in the same field of view. In measurement, microspheres are not required to be suspended in a specific liquid but in any medium with known RI which is appropriate for the microspheres or even just in atmosphere. By using microspheres with known RI as sensors, the method can also be used for rapid in situ measurement of the local RI of inhomogeneous media. In this paper, we describe the principle of the method and the experiments of using the method to measure the RI of individual microspheres. Its applications for sensing instantaneous RI/concentration/temperature variation in critical situations such as anywhere in mixing flows or living biological specimens are also presented.

Study of Raman spectroscopy of optically trapped human red blood cell affected by direct current / 生物医学工程学杂志

Laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy (LTRS) system is a combination of spectroscopy and laser tweezers; It is a new method of studying cells; It can trap single living cell and make Raman spectrum of single living cell. From the positions, intensities, and line widths of the Raman peaks in the spectra, we can get useful information about composition, structure and interactions of complexes inside the living cells. External agents may change cell's physiological state and this changed information can also be got from Raman spectra. This article is a study of Raman spectra of human red blood cell (RBC) affected by different intensity direct current (DC); from the result, distinct change of Raman spectra of RBC have been got. These changes characterize the changes of the internal information of the cells. This article give some academic reference of physical therapy using DC in the level of molecule.
