RESUMO
Incorporating rigid cyclic acetal and ketal units into polymer structures is an important strategy toward recyclable high-performance materials from renewable resources. In the present work, citric acid, a widely used platform chemical derived from biomass, has been efficiently converted into di- and tricyclic diketones. Ketalization with glycerol or trimethylolpropane afforded rigid spirodiols, which were obtained as complex mixtures of isomers. After a comprehensive NMR analysis, the spirodiols were converted into the respective di(meth)acrylates and utilized in thiol-ene polymerizations in combination with different dithiols. The resulting poly(ß-thioether ester ketal)s were thermally stable up to 300 °C and showed glass-transition temperatures in a range of -7 to 40 °C, depending on monomer composition. The polymers were stable in aqueous acids and bases, but in a mixture of 1 M aqueous HCl and acetone, the ketal functional groups were cleanly hydrolyzed, opening the pathway for potential chemical recycling of these materials. We envision that these novel bioderived spirodiols have a great potential to become valuable and versatile bio-based building blocks for several different kinds of polymer materials.

Lactic acid is one of the key biobased chemical building blocks, given its readily availability from sugars through fermentation and facile conversion into a range of important chemical intermediates and polymers. Herein, well-defined rubbery polymers derived from butyl lactate solvent were successfully prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of the corresponding monomeric acrylic derivative. Good control over molecular weight and molecular weight distribution was achieved in bulk using either monofunctional or bifunctional trithiocarbonate-type chain transfer agents. Subsequently, poly(butyl lactate acrylate), with a relative low Tg (-20 °C), good thermal stability (5% wt. loss at 340 °C) and low toxicity was evaluated as a sustainable middle block in all-acrylic ABA copolymers using isosorbide and vanillin-derived glassy polyacrylates as representative end blocks. Thermal, morphological and mechanical properties of copolymers containing hard segment contents of <20 wt% were evaluated to demonstrate the suitability of rubbery poly(alkyl lactate) building blocks for developing functional sustainable materials. Noteworthy, 180° peel adhesion measurements showed that the synthesized biosourced all-acrylic ABA copolymers possess competitive performance when compared with commercial pressure-sensitive tapes.

Seed orchards function as the primary source of high-quality seeds for reforestation in many European countries, but their seed yields can be severely reduced due to seed- and cone-feeding insects. We evaluated various parameters of pheromone-based mating disruption for control of the moths Cydia strobilella and Dioryctria abietella, which are major pests in European Picea abies seed orchards. We applied different types of pheromone dispensers (rubber septa or wax droplets) at different densities and heights, and with different amounts of active components, covering whole orchards or part of an orchard. The efficacy of the treatment was evaluated by analysing male captures in pheromone-baited assessment traps, and presence of larvae in cones. A dramatic decrease (94-100%) in capture of males in traps occurred in all pheromone-treated plots compared to control plots for both moth species. In contrast, a subsequent reduction in larval numbers in cones was only achieved when wax droplets were used as the dispensing formulation at high density and at the highest pheromone dose tested, and only in half of the trials for each pest species. Electrophysiological recordings using antennae of male C. strobilella indicated elevated pheromone concentrations in a treated plot versus a control plot. Our results show that mating disruption has potential to reduce cone damage in spruce seed orchards caused by C. strobilella and D. abietella, but optimisation of the technique is required to achieve consistent and efficient population suppression of these pests.
RESUMO
The first time application of hydroformylation on olefinic derivatives of isosorbide and isomannide is shown by which a new carbon-carbon bond is formed. Depending on the ligand and reaction conditions used, the C6 regioisomer a can be obtained in 4:1 ratio and excellent yield, whereas C5 isomer b is achieved in almost complete regioselectivity (46:1) and good yield. In the majority of cases only the exo orientation is observed for the obtained aldehydes, and the method is easily applicable also on a 1 g scale.
RESUMO
Herbivore insects use a variety of search cues during host finding and mate recognition, including visual, gustatory, and olfactory stimuli, leaving multiple traits for evolution to act upon. However, information about differences or similarities in search pattern amongst closely related insect herbivore species is still scarce. Here, we study the production of and the response to pheromone in Galerucella (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) to investigate the beetles' search behaviour. Males of G. pusilla and G. calmariensis, two closely related species, are known to produce the aggregation pheromone dimethylfuran-lactone when feeding on their host plant, whereas no pheromones have been identified in other Galerucella species. We show that dimethylfuran-lactone is produced also by males of G. tenella, a species phylogenetically close to G. pusilla and G. calmariensis, whereas the more distantly related species G. lineola and G. sagittariae were not found to produce the same compound. To investigate the beetles' behavioural response to dimethylfuran-lactone, the pheromone was synthesized using a partly novel method and tested in olfactometers, showing that G. pusilla, G. calmariensis, and G. tenella were all attracted to the pheromone, whereas G. lineola and G. sagittariae did not respond. This suggests that the production of and the response to pheromone could be linked to the phylogenetic relatedness between the species.
RESUMO
The four possible isomers of tetradeca-4,8-dien-1-yl acetate and corresponding alcohols were synthesized stereoselectively by synthetic routes employing Wittig coupling reaction for the preparation of (Z,E)- and (Z,Z)-isomers, and alkylation of terminal alkynes for the preparation of (E,E)- and (E,Z)-isomers as the key steps. Synthetic products were characterized by 13C- and 1H-NMR spectroscopy as well as mass-spectrometric methods. All four isomers gave distinctive mass spectra where m/z 81 fragments clearly dominated. Elution order, followed by retention index presented in parenthesis, of tetradeca-4,8-dien-1-ols was determined as (Z,Z) (2082.1), (Z,E) (2082.8), (E,E) (2083.1), and (E,Z) (2083.2) from unpolar SPB-1 column, and as (E,E) (2210.2), (Z,E) (2222.1), (E,Z) (2223.4), and (Z,Z) (2224.7) from polar DB-WAX column. The isomers of tetradeca-4,8-dien-1-yl acetates eluted in the order of (Z,Z) (2176.1), (Z,E) (2178.4), (E,Z) (2185.9), and (E,E) (2186.4) from SPB-1, and (Z,E) (2124.3), (E,E) (2157.7), (Z,Z) (2128.9), and (E,Z) (2135.9) from DB-WAX columns. Field-screening tests for attractiveness of tetradeca-4,8-dien-1-yl acetates revealed that (4Z,8E)-tetradeca-4,8-dien-1-yl acetate significantly attracted Phyllonorycter coryli and Chrysoesthia drurella males. (4E,8E)-Tetradeca-4,8-dien-1-yl acetate was the most efficient attractant for Ph. esperella and Ph. saportella males, and (4E,8Z)-tetradeca-4,8-dien-1-yl acetate was attractive to Ph. cerasicolella males.

Volatiles from chocolate mediate upwind flight behavior in Ephestia cautella and Plodia interpunctella. We used gas chromatography with electroantennographic detection and found 12 active compounds derived from three different chocolate types, i.e., plain, nut-containing, and rum-flavored. Eight of the compounds were identified with mass spectrometry, and the activity of three compounds, ethyl vanillin, nonanal, and phenylacetaldehyde (PAA), was subsequently confirmed in both electrophysiological and behavioral assays. In the electroantennogram experiment, PAA and nonanal were consistently eliciting responses in both species and sexes. Ethyl vanillin was active in males of both species, and also in P. interpunctella females. E. cautella females showed no antennal activity in response to ethyl vanillin. All three volatiles were attractive to E. cautella males and P. interpunctella females in a flight tunnel. E. cautella females were significantly attracted only to ethyl vanillin. P. interpunctella males were attracted to PAA. Ethyl vanillin is a novel insect attractant, whereas both nonanal and phenylacetaldehyde mediate behavior in many insect species. A final experiment revealed that a blend of the three volatiles was required to induce landing in the flight tunnel bioassay, and that the landing rate was dependent on dose. The three-component blend attracted both sexes of P. interpunctella and females of E. cautella, whereas E. cautella males were not attracted.

Three nepetalactones were isolated from Nepeta racemosa (mussinii) by traditional methods. An improved method was developed to isolate nepetalactones from N. faassénii. An epimerization procedure was used to prepare the fourth 7S-nepetalactone diastereomer. The cis-fused nepetalactols were prepared by reduction of the corresponding nepetalactones, while the trans-fused nepetalactols were unstable and found to undergo ring-opening reactions yielding iridodials. The characterizations and structural assignments by means of NMR agree with quantum chemical density functional calculations.

We proved that the leafminer moth Phyllonorycter emberizaepenella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) reproduces by parthenogenesis of the thelytoky type. Despite a complete absence of males, parthenogenetically reproducing females diurnally demonstrated the calling posture normally used for releasing signaling compounds. Two compounds, which we collected from a calling female, were identified as potential sex pheromone components: (8E, 10E)-8,10-tetradecadienyl acetate and (8E,10E)-8,10-tetradecadienol, the latter occurring only in trace amounts. In field experiments, no males were attracted to traps baited with either the potential sex pheromone or with virgin females. Both the pattern of behavior and the chemical characteristics of the pheromone of Ph. emberizaepenella species were similar to those known for Lepidoptera with the usual amphimictic mode of reproduction. Theoretical speculations that in thelytoky, where there is no need to find a sexual partner, the individuals would obtain certain advantages due to reduction in their sexual behavior, were, thus, not confirmed for Ph. emberizaepenella.
