RESUMO

Optical pump-probe experiments reveal spin beats of manganese ions in (Cd,Mn)Te, due to hyperfine and crystal fields. At "magic" orientations of the magnetic field, the effect of local crystal field is strongly suppressed. In this case, the spin precession of Mn(2+) embedded in the lattice approaches the precession expected for the free ion. Following optical excitation, regular spin pulses show up, revealing the one-to-one correspondence between precession frequency and Mn(2+) nuclear spin state. The period of the spin pulses accurately determines the hyperfine constant |A|=705 neV. The manganese spin coherence time up to T(2)(Mn)≃15 ns is measured for a manganese concentration x=0.0011.

RESUMO

The serotyping of 350 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from patients with acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory organs and from healthy children was carried out with the use of the agglutination test. 145 pleural fluid samples were tested for the presence of the pneumococcal antigen and its K-type. The prevailing pneumococcal serotypes were 6, 1, 19, 12 and 9 in acute pneumonia and 6, 19, 42, 3 and 12 in chronic pneumonia, including, respectively, 64.8% and 62% of all typed strains. Cases of pneumonia with complications in the form of pleuritis were mostly induced by serotypes 3, 1, 12 and 14, while in the destructive forms of pneumonia K-types 3, 14, 9 and 12 were isolated. Examinations of healthy pre-school children have shown 16.1% of them to be transitory pneumococcus carriers. Multiple biological examinations carried out during 1.5 years revealed that in this period 42.4% of the children were pneumococcus carriers.

RESUMO

Diagnostic agglutinating sera to pneumococci of different serotypes have been studied with respect to their capacity for taking part in the reactions of precipitation with capsular pneumococcal polysaccharides. The sera have proved to be highly active and specific in the reactions of double immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis. The sera under study have also been found to react with cattle serum, one of the components of the medium used for the cultivation of pneumococci.

RESUMO

A total of 395 Providencia strains isolated from patients and the environment were studied. Their differentiation by O and H antigens revealed that these strains belonged to 36 serological groups and contained 26 varieties of the flagellar antigen. In accordance with the combinations of O and H antigens, 59 serological variants were found among the Providencia strains. 33 new, formerly unknown serovars and 2 flagellar antigens were added to the existing antigenic and diagnostic scheme of Providencia. Most of the strains isolated from patients with surgical complications and burns were found to belong to P. stuartii, serovars O44: H4 and O4: H4, and from patients with acute intestinal diseases, to P. alcalifaciens, serovars O2: H26 and O50: H33.

RESUMO

The technology of the preparation of 20 diagnostic pneumococcal antisera premitting the differentiation of S. pneumoniae by K-antigen in the slide agglutination test and the capsule swelling test has been developed. The data on S. pneumoniae K-types isolated from patients have been obtained.

RESUMO

The results of the study of the enzymatic properties of pneumococcal collection strains belonging to 83 K-types, their sensitivity to optochine and their facility of lysis under the action of bile indicate that the strains in the collection belong to the species Str. pneumoniae, which makes this collection suitable for obtaining diagnostic preparations, as well as for other microbiological, immunological and genetic studies.

RESUMO

The strains isolated from acute dysentery patients and convalescents and identified as E. coli O151:K--were studied. Diagnostic errors due to inexact genus determination were revealed, and the isolated strains were found to belong to Citrobacter and Hafnia. The main biochemical differences allowing to differentiate E. coli O151:K--from these two genera were established. The study also showed the necessity of some tests, such as the tests for citrate assimilation in Simmons' medium and sodium malonate assimilation, the determination of indole production, the determination of differences in the methyl red and Voges--Proskauer reactions at different temperatures. The poor unilateral antigenic relationship of the strains under study, agglutinating with antiserum to E. coli O151, Citrobacter O1 and O14 and Hafnia C18 was revealed.

The authors confirmed the reference of the test strains H13 (P6c) and H22 (A231a) of the international collection of E. coli to Citrobacter; their antigenic formula was established. As shown, strains P6c possessed a variety of the H-antigen which was not described in Citrobacter earlier, designated as H41a, 97. Three types of flagellar antigens characterized by the presence of an interrelationship with the partial factor H41 of the flagellar Citrobacter antigens were revealed in E. coli; the partial composition of H-antigenic components common for E. coli and Citrobacter was studied. Two of three new varieties of the E. coli H-antigen revealed was characterized by a cross correlation and a relation to the standard H19 E. coli antigen. The strain with the third variety of the H-antigen was capable of forming the H-antigenic mutants which acquired the antigenic component identical to the standard H16 E. coli antigen. E. coli strain is recommended for the replacement of the strain P6c in the International collection of E. coli.

A study was made of morphological, cultural, biochemical properties and antigenic structure (by O-antigen) of 59 strains isolated in group acute intestinal affection of children at the pioneer camp. By the combination of biochemical properties (31 tests) all the cultures isolated were referred to Providencia alcalifaciens of biotype 7. Serological typing with the aid of experimental diagnostic agglutinating O-sera showed these strains to be referred to serological group O2. Identity of the O-antigen of the isolated cultures to the standard O2 strain was confirmed by the results of cross reactions of agglutinin absorption. The results of bacteriological and clinico-epidemiological studies offered a possibility of regarding the isolated Providencia alcalifaciens of serological group O2 as the causative agents of the group intestinal disease in children.
