RESUMO

Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) have attracted considerable attention as sensing substrates for the development of olfactory biosensors. The Drosophila LUSH protein is an OBP and is known to bind to various alcohols. Technology that uses the LUSH protein has great potential to provide crucial information through odorant detection. In this work, the LUSH protein was used as a sensing substrate to detect the ethanol concentration. Furthermore, we fused the LUSH protein with a silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) to measure the electrical signals that arise from molecular interactions between the LUSH and ethanol. A dual-gate sensing system for self-amplification of the signal resulting from the molecular interaction between the LUSH and ethanol was then used to achieve a much higher sensitivity than a conventional ISFET. In the end, we successfully detected ethanol at concentrations ranging between 0.001 and 1% using the LUSH OBP-fused ISFET olfactory sensor. The OBP-fused SOI-based olfactory ISFET sensor can lead to the development of handheld sensors for various purposes such as detecting toxic chemicals, narcotics control, testing for food freshness, and noninvasive diagnoses.

This work describes the construction of a sensitive, stable, and label-free sensor based on a dual-gate field-effect transistor (DG FET), in which uniformly distributed and size-controlled silicon nanowire (SiNW) arrays by nanoimprint lithography act as conductor channels. Compared to previous DG FETs with a planar-type silicon channel layer, the constructed SiNW DG FETs exhibited superior electrical properties including a higher capacitive-coupling ratio of 18.0 and a lower off-state leakage current under high-temperature stress. In addition, while the conventional planar single-gate (SG) FET- and planar DG FET-based pH sensors showed the sensitivities of 56.7 mV/pH and 439.3 mV/pH, respectively, the SiNW DG FET-based pH sensors showed not only a higher sensitivity of 984.1 mV/pH, but also a lower drift rate of 0.8% for pH-sensitivity. This demonstrates that the SiNW DG FETs simultaneously achieve high sensitivity and stability, with significant potential for future biosensing applications.

The repetitive and excessive workload accompanying grip strength- or hand-intensive tasks are often considered to be common causes of work-related upper limb musculoskeletal disorders. For this reason, numerous experimental studies have been performed on maximum grip strength. However, due to an absence of standard guidelines, researchers have adopted different resting times and number of trials suited for their particular research purposes. The effects of resting time and the number of trials on the maximum total grip strength and individual finger forces of 24 participants over 20 trials were investigated. Results showed that the total grip strength and individual finger strengths differed significantly according to the resting time and the number of trials (p<0.05). Overall, grip strength tended to increase with a reduction in resting time (% reduction: 7.8%, 9.1%, 11.1%, and 13.0% for 3 min, 2 min, 1 min, and 30s resting time, respectively) as well as with an increase in the number of trials (% reduction: 8%, 10%, 13%, and 16% for 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th trials). The effects of resting time and the number of trials also showed statistically significant effects on individual finger forces. Regression equations of total grip strength and finger forces with resting time and number of trials were established. These equations were then applied to formulate guidelines for appropriate resting times in experiments based on the number of trials and acceptable reductions in grip strength. Data from this and future studies regarding decreasing grip strength and the contribution of each finger are expected to form the groundwork for ergonomic hand tool design and development.

A possible limitation of many ergonomics checklists that evaluate postures is an independent evaluation of each body segment without considering the coordination between body segments and resulting in the under-/over-estimation of body postures. A total of 20 men were selected to evaluate the effects of shoulder and back flexion angles on the upper-limb muscle activities, subjective discomforts and heart rates. Interesting findings were obtained from the coordination between back flexion angles and shoulder flexion angles. At a back flexion angle of 45°, the discomfort and heart rates were the least at a shoulder flexion angle of 45°. The %MVC also showed a similar trend. It could be inferred that the 0° shoulder flexion angle would be a natural posture, when the back flexion angle is 0°, whereas 45° shoulder flexion might be a more natural posture when the back flexion angle is 45°. STATEMENT OF RELEVANCE: This study evaluated the effects of back and shoulder flexion angles on subjective as well as objective measures. The findings of this study considered the coordination between two body flexion angles and could be used to improve the accuracy of existing ergonomics evaluation methods for body postures.
