Objective: This systematic review aims to compare the clinical longevity of metallic and fiberglass intraradicular posts in teeth with severely compromised crowns, utilizing randomized clinical trials and case reports published in the last eleven years. Material and Methods: The research was conducted on PubMed, Medline, Lilacs, and BBO databases using the first search strategy with the descriptors 'dental posts,' 'longevity,' 'fiberglass-reinforced posts' or 'metallic posts.' The second search strategy involved analyzing the references of articles identified by the first search. Both studies were carried out with stringent inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: No statistically significant and clinically relevant differences in longevity were observed between metallic and fiberglass posts. Conclusion: The clinical success and durability of the restorative procedure using intraradicular posts primarily depend on the remaining amount around the post (ferrule), the type and position of the tooth in the arch (impacting the masticatory forces exerted on the restored tooth), and the correct application of the cementation technique. It is noteworthy that fiberglass posts offer substantial advantages by presenting a modulus of elasticity similar to dental structure, ensuring a more homogeneous distribution of masticatory forces and reducing the risk of fractures. These findings have practical implications for material selection in restorative procedures involving intraradicular posts.(AU)


Objetivo: Esta revisão sistemática visa comparar a longevidade clínica de pinos intrarradiculares metálicos e de fibra de vidro em dentes com coroas severamente comprometidas, através de estudos clínicos randomizados e relatos de casos, publicados nos últimos onze anos. Material e Métodos: A pesquisa foi conduzida nas bases de dados PubMed, Medline, Lilacs e BBO, utilizando a primeira estratégia de busca com os s 'pinos dentais' e 'longevidade' e 'pinos reforçados com fibra de vidro' ou 'pinos metálicos'. A segunda estratégia de busca consistiu na análise das referências dos artigos identificados pela primeira estratégia. Ambos os estudos foram delineados com critérios rigorosos de inclusão e exclusão. Resultados: Não se constataram diferenças estatisticamente significativas e clinicamente relevantes na longevidade entre pinos metálicos e de fibra de vidro. Conclusão: O êxito clínico e a durabilidade do procedimento restaurador empregando pinos intrarradiculares dependem primordialmente da quantidade de remanescente ao redor do pino (férula), do tipo e posição do dente na arcada (o que impacta nas forças mastigatórias exercidas sobre o dente restaurado) e da aplicação correta da técnica de cimentação.Destaca-se que o pino de fibra de vidro oferece vantagens substanciais ao apresentar módulo de elasticidade similar à estrutura dentária, assegurando uma distribuição mais homogênea das forças mastigatórias e reduzindo o risco de fraturas (AU)

Background & Aims: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is defined as a reversible syndrome and therefore should resolve following liver transplantation (LT). However, neurological complications have been reported in up to 47% of LT recipients, which have been documented to be associated with a history of overt HE pre-LT. We hypothesise that multiple episodes of HE lead to permanent cell injury and exacerbate neurological dysfunction. Our goal was to evaluate the impact of cumulative HE episodes on neurological status and brain integrity in rats with chronic liver disease. Methods: Episodes of overt HE (loss of righting reflex) were induced following injection of ammonium acetate in bile duct ligation (BDL) rats (BDL-Ammonia) every 4 days starting at week 3 post-BDL. Neurobehaviour was evaluated after the last episode. Upon sacrifice, plasma ammonia, systemic oxidative stress, and inflammation markers were assessed. Neuronal markers including neuron-specific nuclear antigen and SMI311 (anti-neurofilament marker) and apoptotic markers (cleaved caspase-3, Bax, and Bcl2) were measured. Total antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress marker (4-hydroxynonenal), and proinflammatory cytokines (tumour necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1ß) were measured in brain (hippocampus, frontal cortex, and cerebellum). Proteomic analysis was conducted in the hippocampus. Results: In hippocampus of BDL-Ammonia rats, cleaved caspase-3 and Bax/Bcl2 ratio were significantly increased, whereas NeuN and SMI311 were significantly decreased compared with BDL-Vehicle rats. Higher levels of oxidative stress-induced post-translational modified proteins were found in hippocampus of BDL-Ammonia group which were associated with a lower total antioxidant capacity. Conclusions: Ammonia-induced episodes of overt HE caused neuronal cell injury/death in BDL rats. These results suggest that multiple bouts of HE can be detrimental on the integrity of the brain, translating to irreversibility and hence neurological complications post-LT. Impact and implications: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is defined as a reversible neuropsychiatric syndrome resolving following liver transplantation (LT); however, ∼47% of patients demonstrate neurological impairments after LT, which are associated with a previous history of overt HE pre-LT. Our study indicates that multiple episodes of overt HE can cause permanent neuronal damage which may lead to neurological complications after LT. Nevertheless, preventing the occurrence of overt HE episodes is critical for reducing the risk of irreversible neuronal injury in patients with cirrhosis.

Este artigo apresenta os resultados de um projeto de pesquisa cujo principal objetivo foi verificar os benefícios da inclusão do Laboratório de Humanidades (LabHum) do Centro de História e Filosofia das Ciências da Saúde (CeHFi) da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp) como disciplina eletiva para a promoção da humanização no contexto de graduandos da área da saúde (Medicina e Enfermagem). A disciplina foi enfocada na reflexão a partir da leitura de clássicos da literatura. Foram adotados métodos qualitativos fundamentados na Fenomenologia Hermenêutica. Os resultados apontaram para a ideia de que a literatura propicia a deflagração de “acontecimentos interpelativos”, ou seja, momentos de autorreflexão capazes de tocar o educando a ponto de que mudanças de visão e atitudes se incorporem naturalmente ao seu dia a dia, promovendo a humanização.

La asignatura se enfocó en la reflexión a partir de la lectura de clásicos de la literatura. Se adoptaron métodos cualitativos fundamentados en la Fenomenología hermenéutica. Los resultados señalaron la idea de que la literatura propicia la deflagración de “acontecimientos de interpelación”, es decir, momentos de auto-reflexión capaces de emocionar al alumno hasta el punto en que se incorporen cambios de visión y actitudes en su cotidiano de manera natural, promoviendo la humanización.


This paper presents the results from a research project in which the main objective was to ascertain the benefits of including the Humanities Laboratory (LabHum) of the Center for History and Philosophy of Health Sciences (CeHFi), Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) as an elective discipline for promoting humanization in the context of medical and nursing students. The course focused on reflections from reading classics from the  literature. Qualitative methods based on hermeneutic phenomenology were used. The results pointed towards the idea that literature enables deflagration of “interpellative experiences”, i.e. moments of self-reflection that are capable of touching and educating to the point at which changes to vision and attitudes are incorporated naturally into the daily routine, so as to promote humanization.

BACKGROUND: Shark liver oil (SLOil) and fish oil (FOil), which are respectively rich in alkylglycerols (AKGs) and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), are able to reduce the growth of some tumors and the burden of cachexia. It is known that FOil is able to reduce proliferation rate and increase apoptotic cells and lipid peroxidation of tumor cells efficiently. However, there are few reports revealing the influence of SLOil on these parameters. In the current study, effects of FOil chronic supplementation on tumor growth and cachexia were taken as reference to compare the results obtained with SLOil supplementation. Also, we evaluated if the association of SLOil and FOil was able to promote additive effects. METHODS: Weanling male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: fed regular chow (C), supplemented (1 g/kg body weight) with SLOil (CSLO), FOil (CFO) and both (CSLO + FO). After 8 weeks half of each group was inoculated with Walker 256 cells originating new groups (W, WSLO, WFO and WSLO + FO). Biochemical parameters of cachexia, tumor weight, hydroperoxide content, proliferation rate and percentage of apoptotic tumor cells were analysed. Fatty acids and AKG composition of tumor and oils were obtained by high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed by unpaired t-test and one-way ANOVA followed by a post hoc Tukey test. RESULTS: Fourteen days after inoculation, SLOil was able to restore cachexia parameters to control levels, similarly to FOil. WSLO rats presented significantly lower tumor weight (40%), greater tumor cell apoptosis (~3-fold), decreased tumor cell proliferation (35%), and higher tumor content of lipid hydroperoxides (40%) than observed in W rats, but FOil showed more potent effects. Supplementation with SLOil + FOil did not promote additive effects. Additionally, chromatographic results suggested a potential incorporation competition between the n-3 fatty acids and the AKGs in the tumor cells' membranes. CONCLUSIONS: SLOil is another marine source of lipids with similar FOil anti-cachectic capacity. Furthermore, despite being less potent than FOil, SLOil presented significant in vivo antitumor effects. These results suggest that the chronic supplementation with SLOil may be adjuvant of the anti-cancer therapy.

This study investigated the mechanisms by which ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate (HMB) administration in rats reduces Walker-256 tumor growth. Male Wistar rats were supplemented with HMB (76 mg/kg/day) (HW), or a placebo (W), during 8 wk by gavage. At the 6th wk, rats were inoculated with a suspension of Walker 256 tumor cells (3 × 10(7)/mL). Fifteen days after inoculation, the HW group showed higher glycemia (109.4 ± 5.53 vs. 89.87 ± 7.02 mg/dL, P < 0.05) and lower spleen (1.35 ± 0.05 vs. 1.65 ± 0.12 g, P < 0.05) and tumor weights (9.64 ± 1.07 vs. 13.55 ± 1.19 g, P < 0.05) compared to the W group. Tumor cells extracted from the HMB-treated rats displayed a 36.9% decrement in rates of proliferation ex vivo and a significant increase in the Bax/Bcl-2 protein expression ratio in comparison to those extracted from the placebo-treated rats (P < 0.05). Both phagocytic capacity and H(2)O(2) production rates were higher in polymorphnuclear cells that were obtained from the blood of the HW rats in comparison to those from the W rats (P < 0.05). Reduction of necrotic regions and an intense infiltration of leukocytes and activated granulocytes in HW were evident by transmission electron microscopy. Our findings suggest that HMB supplementation decreases tumor burden by modifying the inner environment of tumor cells and by interfering with blood leukocyte function.

Physical activity has been used in cancer prevention and treatment. In this study, we investigated some of the mechanisms by which anaerobic exercise reduces tumor growth. To do so, rats were trained for 8 weeks. Training consisted of jumping in a swimming pool for ten 30-s sets, with a load that was 50% of body weight attached to the back, 4 times per week. At the sixth week, anaerobic exercise trained rats (EX group) were inoculated with a suspension of Walker 256 tumor cells. Tumor weight, apoptotic tumor cells, tumor Bax and Bcl-2 protein expression, tumor lipid peroxidation, and tumor cell proliferation ex vivo were evaluated. Tumor weight was significantly lower in the EX group (∼30%) than in rats that did not undergo training (sedentary group) (p < 0.05). Apoptosis in the tumor cells of EX rats was 2-fold higher than in the tumor cells of sedentary rats; in addition, Bax expression increased by 10% and Bcl-2 decreased by 13% in EX rats. Lipid peroxidation was 4-fold higher in the tumor cells of EX rats than in those of sedentary rats (p < 0.05). Tumor cell proliferation ex vivo was 29% lower in the EX group than in the sedentary group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, Walker 256 tumor-bearing exercised rats presented more tumor cell apoptosis, a higher tumor content of lipid peroxides, pro-apoptotic protein expression balance, and reduced tumor weight and cell proliferation ex vivo, compared with sedentary rats. These events, together, account for the lower tumor growth we observed in the EX rats.

This paper investigated the effect of jump training on blood biochemical parameters and neutrophil responses of diabetic rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into control, trained, diabetic and trained-diabetic groups. Diabetes was induced by i.v. injection of streptozotocin. Jump training consisted of six sets of ten jumps in water with overload of 50% of body mass with 1-min of resting, four times per week during 6 weeks. Plasma glucose, lactate, triacylglycerol and total cholesterol concentrations, differential leukocyte count, phagocytosis and anion superoxide production by neutrophils were evaluated. Diabetes caused hyperglycemia, hypertriacylglycerolemia, and body weight loss. Physical training reversed hypertriacylglycerolemia. Jump training increased phagocytosis and anion superoxide production by blood neutrophils from trained and trained-diabetic rats. Neutrophilia and lymphocytopenia occur in diabetic and trained-diabetic rats. Anaerobic jump training in diabetic rats reduced hypertriacylglycerolemia and increased neutrophil anion superoxide production. Phagocytosis was not altered in trained-diabetic rats.

Here, we investigated the effect of jump exercise on tumor growth, cancer cachexia, lymphocyte proliferation and macrophage function in Walker 256 tumor-bearing rats. Male Wistar rats (60 days) were divided into sedentary (C) and exercised (E) groups. Jump training consisted of six sets of 10 jumps in water with overload of 50% of body mass with 1 min of resting, four times per week for 8 weeks. After 6 weeks of training, half of each group was inoculated with 2 x 10(7) cells of Walker 256 tumor. Sedentary tumor-bearing and exercised tumor-bearing are referred to as T and TE, respectively. Tumor weight in the T group was 25 g. These animals display loss of weight, hypertriacylglycerolemia, hyperlacticidemia, depletion of glycogen stores and increase in PIF expression. Jump exercise (TE) induced a significant lower tumor weight, preserves liver glycogen stores, partly prevented the hypertriacylglycerolemia, hyperlacticidemia and, prevented the fall in body weight and reduced PIF expression. Lymphocyte was increased by tumor burden (T) and was higher by including exercise (TE). The same was observed regarding phagocytosis and lysosomal volume. Anaerobic exercise decreases tumor growth, cancer cachexia and increases innate and adaptative immune function.
