Our aim was to investigate if using a warm-up routine that included parachute-resisted sprints with large hand-paddles improves 50 m freestyle performance in trained collegiate swimmers. Twelve swimmers (23.9 ± 2.2 years, 179 ± 7 cm, 77.1 ± 10.6 kg) participated in the study and completed two 50-m freestyle races, each preceded by a different warm-up routine, either control (CON) or experimental (EXP). The warm-up routines consisted of 500 m of swimming at self-selected speed, followed by four 10 s sprints with 1 min rest intervals. During EXP, sprints were performed using large hand-paddles and a swimming parachute, while during CON, sprints were performed freely. Performance and technique were assessed during the 50 m freestyle races. We found no significant differences in 25- and 50 m performance times (CON: 12.6 ± 0.8 vs. EXP: 12.5 ± 0.8 s, ES = 0.125; and CON: 26.8 ± 1.6 vs. EXP: 26.7 ± 1.7 s, ES = 0.06, respectively) between the two conditions. Mean stroke length (CON: 2.04 ± 0.21 vs. EXP: 2.02 ± 0.22 m·cycle-1, ES = 0.09), stroke frequency (CON: 55.4 ± 5.3 vs. EXP: 56.3 ± 5.2 cycles s-1, ES = 0.17), and propulsive time (CON: 0.62 ± 0.07 vs. EXP: 0.61 ± 0.06 s, ES = 0.15) were also not different between conditions. It is possible that the CON warm-up routine induced the priming effects that lead to PAPE, or that the EXP warm-up routine primed the athletes further but also induced greater fatigue, resulting in no significant effects on swimming performance. Our findings suggest that parachute-resisted sprints with hand-paddles during warm-up do not enhance 50 m freestyle swimming performance in trained collegiate swimmers. Coaches and practitioners should consider exploring different warm-up protocols to identify what works best for their athletes.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of eccentric cycling (ECCCYC) training on performance, physiological, and morphological parameters in comparison to concentric cycling (CONCYC) training. Searches were conducted using PubMed, Embase, and ScienceDirect. Studies comparing the effect of ECCCYC and CONCYC training regimens on performance, physiological, and/or morphological parameters were included. Bayesian multilevel meta-analysis models were used to estimate the population's mean difference between chronic responses from ECCCYC and CONCYC training protocols. Group levels and meta-regression were used to evaluate the specific effects of subjects and study characteristics. Fourteen studies were included in this review. The meta-analyses showed that ECCCYC training was more effective in increasing knee extensor strength, vastus lateralis fiber cross-sectional area, and six-minute walking distance compared to CONCYC. Moreover, ECCCYC was as effective as CONCYC in decreasing body fat percentage. CONCYC was more effective in increasing V˙O2max and peak power output attained during concentric incremental tests. However, group-level analyses revealed that ECCCYC was more effective than CONCYC in improving V˙O2max in patients with cardiopulmonary diseases. ECCCYC is a viable modality for exercise interventions aiming to improve parameters of muscle strength, hypertrophy, functional capacity, aerobic power, and body composition, with more advantages than CONCYC training in improving neuromuscular variables.

Abstract Aim: The present study aimed to screen for differences in isokinetic peak torque, hamstrings-to-quadriceps ratio, and proprioception within the lower limbs of female handball athletes. Methods: Twelve college-level female handball athletes with no previous experience with resistance training performed five maximal isokinetic contractions of the knee extensors and knee flexors to determine isokinetic peak torque and hamstring-to-quadriceps ratios. Proprioception was determined by assessing passive position sense on an isokinetic dynamometer. Results: The athletes presented significantly greater (p < 0.01) knee extensors isometric peak torque for the jumping limb (144.9 ± 23.1) when compared to the non-jumping limb (132.9 ± 21.5). The Hamstrings-to-quadriceps ratio was below 0.6 for both limbs, being significantly greater (p < 0.01) for the non-jumping limb (0.56 ± 0.08) when compared to the jumping limb (0.50 ± 0.08). Conclusion: Female handball athletes that do not engage in resistance training can experience functional bilateral asymmetries in the knee extensors and knee-joint instability, as assessed by the hamstrings-to-quadriceps ratio due to the asymmetric characteristics of handball. Regular strength training might correct such asymmetries and instabilities.

This study aimed to investigate if ACTN3 gene polymorphism impacts the susceptibility to exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and changes in running economy (RE) following downhill running. Thirty-five healthy men were allocated to the two groups based on their ACTN3 gene variants: RR and X allele carriers. Neuromuscular function [knee extensor isometric peak torque (IPT), rate of torque development (RTD), and countermovement, and squat jump height], indirect markers of EIMD [muscle soreness, mid-thigh circumference, knee joint range of motion, and serum creatine kinase (CK) activity], and RE (oxygen uptake, minute ventilation, blood lactate concentration, and perceived exertion) for 5-min of running at a speed equivalent to 80% of individual maximal oxygen uptake speed were assessed before, immediately after, and 1-4 days after a 30-min downhill run (-15%). Neuromuscular function was compromised (P < 0.05) following downhill running with no differences between the groups, except for IPT, which was more affected in the RR individuals compared with the X allele carriers immediately (-24.9 ± 6.9% vs. -16.3 ± 6.5%, respectively) and 4 days (-16.6 ± 14.9% vs. -4.2 ± 9.5%, respectively) post-downhill running. EIMD manifested similarly for both the groups except for serum CK activity, which was greater for RR (398 ± 120 and 452 ± 126 U L-1 at 2 and 4 days following downhill running, respectively) compared with the X allele carriers (273 ± 121 and 352 ± 114 U L-1 at the same time points). RE was compromised following downhill running (16.7 ± 8.3% and 11 ± 7.5% increases in oxygen uptake immediately following downhill running for the RR and X allele carriers, respectively) with no difference between the groups. We conclude that although RR individuals appear to be more susceptible to EIMD following downhill running, this does not extend to the changes in RE.

PURPOSE: There is a profound gap in the understanding of the eccentric cycling intensity continuum, which prevents accurate exercise prescription based on desired physiological responses. This may underestimate the applicability of eccentric cycling for different training purposes. Thus, we aimed to summarize recent research findings and screen for possible new approaches in the prescription and investigation of eccentric cycling. METHOD: A search for the most relevant and state-of-the-art literature on eccentric cycling was conducted on the PubMed database. Literature from reference lists was also included when relevant. RESULTS: Transversal studies present comparisons between physiological responses to eccentric and concentric cycling, performed at the same absolute power output or metabolic load. Longitudinal studies evaluate responses to eccentric cycling training by comparing them with concentric cycling and resistance training outcomes. Only one study investigated maximal eccentric cycling capacity and there are no investigations on physiological thresholds and/or exercise intensity domains during eccentric cycling. No study investigated different protocols of eccentric cycling training and the chronic effects of different load configurations. CONCLUSION: Describing physiological responses to eccentric cycling based on its maximal exercise capacity may be a better way to understand it. The available evidence indicates that clinical populations may benefit from improvements in aerobic power/capacity, exercise tolerance, strength and muscle mass, while healthy and trained individuals may require different eccentric cycling training approaches to benefit from similar improvements. There is limited evidence regarding the mechanisms of acute physiological and chronic adaptive responses to eccentric cycling.

ABSTRACT We aimed to investigate the influence of alpha-actinin-3 (ACTN3) R577X polymorphism on responsiveness to post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) of countermovement jumps (CMJ) in untrained subjects. Sixteen untrained men were allocated into two groups according to their ACTN3 gene alleles: homozygous for the X allele (XX, n = 9) or homozygous for the R allele (RR, n = 7). CMJ height, mean power output and vertical force were determined twice (CMJ1 and CMJ2) in two conditions: control (CON) and potentiated (PAPE). In the CON condition, CMJ were performed before and after a 15-min rest. In the PAPE condition, CMJ were performed 15 min before and 4 min following five squats with a 5-repetition maximum (5RM) load. Different conditions were applied on separate days in a randomized order. Statistical analysis involved three-way ANOVAs to compare the differences between conditions (CON and PAPE), time (CMJ1 and CMJ2), and groups (XX and RR). Significance level considered was p < 0.05. Effect sizes were calculated as Cohen's d. The effect sizes for changes in CMJ height for CON and following pre-activation for PAPE were 0.04 and 0.08, respectively. No significant differences were found for CMJ height between XX and RR at baseline (1.07 ± 2.54 cm e -0.82 ± 2.56 cm, respectively). No differences were found (p>0.05) in responsiveness to PAPE between the groups (XX = -0.20 ± 1.6 cm and RR = -0.81 ± 2.7 cm). We conclude that ACTN3 gene polymorphisms does not influence responsiveness to PAPE.


RESUMO Tivemos como objetivo investigar a influência do polimorfismo do gene ACTN3 na responsividade à potencialização do desempenho de salto com contra movimento (CMJ) pós-ativação (PAPE). Dezesseis homens destreinados foram divididos em dois grupos: homozigotos para os alelos X (XX, n = 9) ou R (RR, n = 7). A altura de CMJ, a potência média e a força vertical aplicada durante o salto pelos participantes foram determinadas duas vezes (CMJ1 e CMJ2) em duas condições: controle (CON) e potencializado (PAPE). Na condição CON, os CMJ foram realizados antes e depois de um período de 15 minutos de repouso. Na condição PAPE, os CMJ foram realizados 15 minutos antes e 4 minutos após a realização de cinco agachamentos com carga de cinco repetições máximas (5RM). As diferentes condições foram realizadas em dias separados e em ordem randomizada. ANOVAs fatoriais de três caminhos foram utilizadas para comparar diferenças entre condições, tempos e grupos. O tamanho do efeito foi calculado pelo d de Cohen. Os tamanhos do efeito para alterações na altura de CMJ para os grupos CON e PAPE foram 0.04 e 0.08, respectivamente. Não houve diferenças significantes entre os grupos XX e RR na altura de salto em condição basal (1.07 ± 2.54 cm e -0.82 ± 2.56 cm, respectivamente). Não houve diferenças significativas na responsividade à PAPE entre os grupos (XX = -0.20 ± 1.6 cm e RR = -0.81 ± 2.7 cm). O polimorfismo do gene ACTN3 parece não ser influenciar isoladamente a responsividade à PAPE.

Fatigue can be defined as exercise-induced strength loss. During running, fatigue can be partially explained by repetitive low-intensity eccentric contractions-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Previous studies showed that a bout of downhill running (DR) attenuated subsequent EIMD. Thus, we tested if a 30-min DR bout would attenuate fatigue induced by subsequent 60-min level running (LR). Twenty-seven male college students were randomly allocated to an experimental (EXP) or a control (CON) group. All participants performed LR on a treadmill at 70% of the velocity (vVO2peak) corresponding to peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). Only EXP performed a 30-min DR (- 15%) on a treadmill at 70% vVO2peak fourteen days before LR. Indirect EIMD markers and neuromuscular function were assessed before, immediately and 48 h after DR and LR. Knee extension isometric peak torque (IPT) decreased (- 36.3 ± 26%, p < 0.05) immediately following DR with full recovery reached 48 h post-DR. Muscle soreness developed (p < 0.05) immediately (37 ± 25 mm) and 48 h (45 ± 26 mm) post-DR. IPT and rate of torque development (RTD) at late phases (> 150 ms) from the onset of muscle contraction decreased significantly (- 10.7 ± 6.1% and from - 15.4 to - 18.7%, respectively) immediately after LR for the CON group and remained below baseline values (- 5.6 ± 8.5% and from - 13.8 to - 14.9%, respectively) 48 h post-LR. However, IPT and late RTD were not significantly affected by LR for the EXP group, showing a group x time interaction effect. We concluded that a single DR bout can be used to attenuate fatigue induced by a LR performed fourteen days after.

We investigated if the same isometric preconditioning protocol (IPP) attenuates the magnitude of muscle damage induced by different maximal eccentric exercise protocols in the elbow flexors. Sixty-four untrained men were assigned to either two experimental or two control groups. Participants in the experimental groups performed an IPP prior to either slow (60°·s-1 - ISO + ECC-S) or fast (180°·s-1 - ISO + ECC-F) maximal eccentric contractions (MaxECC). Subjects in the control groups performed slow (ECC-S) or fast (ECC-F) MaxECC without IPP. Maximal isokinetic concentric torque (MVC), muscle soreness (SOR), and muscle thickness (MT) were assessed before, immediately after, and 1-4 days following the MaxECC. Significant (p < 0.05) group vs. time interactions were found for MVC (F = 4,517), SOR (F = 6,318), and MT (F = 1,863). The ECC-S group presented faster (p < 0.05) recovery of MVC and MT and less (p < 0.05) SOR at 96 h post-MaxECC compared with ECC-F group. No significant differences in MVC and MT were found between ECC-S and ECC-F groups following MaxECC. The ISO + ECC-S group showed faster (p < 0.05) recovery of MVC and SOR compared to the ECC-S group. No significant differences were evident between ISO + ECC-S and ECC-S in any variable. The ISO + ECC-F group showed faster (p < 0.05) recovery of all assessed variables compared with the ECC-F group. MVC was greater (p < 0.05) at 48-72 h, and SOR was less (p < 0.05) at 48-96 h in the ISO + ECC-F compared to the ECC-F group. No significant differences were evident between ISO + ECC-S and ISO + ECC-F for any variable. These results show that the IPP accelerated recovery of MVC and SOR for the slow-eccentric exercise condition and attenuated strength loss and SOR in addition to faster recovery of all assessed variables for the fast-eccentric exercise condition. Therefore, the IPP can be used as a strategy to attenuate and accelerate recovery of muscle damage induced by different-velocity eccentric exercises, resulting in greater protection against muscle damage induced by faster velocity.

The association of old age and chronic conditions, such as hypertension and obesity, can lead to larger decreases in the physical capacities of elderly, compared with their healthy counterparts. Physical exercise has been demonstrated to be efficient in postponing this phenomenon, mainly strength training. However, little is known about the effect of aerobic training on this condition. The aim of this work was to investigate the impact of 12 weeks of moderate-intensity aerobic training on the physical capacities of hypertensive obese older women. Aerobic power, lower limb muscle power, upper limb muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility of 19 hypertensive obese elders were evaluated. Afterward, patients were blindly randomized into control group (CG) and exercise group (EG). EG underwent three sessions/week of 60 min of moderate-intensity aerobic training, during 12 weeks. EG showed increases in VO2max compared with CG (p = .03) and increases in flexibility compared with basal moment (+21.6%; p = .01) after 12 weeks, whereas CG did not show any significant alterations. Moderate aerobic training is capable of inducing increases in maximal aerobic power and flexibility in hypertensive obese elderly. However, other essential physical capacities associated with independence in elderly people (i.e., muscle power and strength) were not responsive to this kind of protocol.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? What role do neuromuscular fatigue mechanisms play in resistance training-induced adaptations of the impulse above end-test torque (IET) after the training period? What is the main finding and its importance? IET and global and peripheral fatigue were increased after a short period of resistance training. Thus, resistance training-induced adaptations in neuromuscular fatigue seem to contribute to enhanced IET after the training period. ABSTRACT: Short-term resistance training has a positive influence on the curvature constant of the power-duration relationship (W'). The physiological mechanism of W' enhancement after resistance training is unclear. This study aimed to determine whether one-leg maximal isometric resistance training influences (1) impulse above end-test torque (IET; an analogue of W') during a 5 min all-out isometric test; and (2) exercise tolerance (limit of tolerance, Tlim) and neuromuscular fatigue during severe exercise (i.e. above end-test torque; ET). Sixteen healthy active males participated in a 3-week unilateral knee extensor resistance-training programme, and 10 matched subjects participated as controls. The subjects were instructed to ramp up to 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) over 1 s, hold it for 3 s, and relax. Each repetition had a 2 s interval (10) and each set, a 2 min interval (3). MVC (18.6%) and muscle thickness (12.8%) were significantly improved after training. Significantly greater global (i.e. reduced MVC, 43.2 ± 13.5% vs. 58.9 ± 6.9%) and peripheral (51.7 ± 13.6% vs. 57.3 ± 15.3%) fatigue, IET (26%) and Tlim (92%) were obtained after resistance training. Moreover, both global (r = 0.57, P < 0.05) and peripheral fatigue (r = 0.55, P < 0.05) accrued during severe exercise were associated with IET. However, echo intensity, which reflects muscle quality, ET and central fatigue remained unchanged throughout the training period. No significant changes in the control group for any variable were observed. Resistance training-induced adaptations in muscle size and neuromuscular fatigue seem to contribute to enhanced IET and Tlim after the training period.

Abstract Walking involves small adjustments to maintain body balance. However, thedemand for these adjustments may be different during downhill walking. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of periodized downhill walking training on neuromuscular responses of knee flexors (KF). Seventeen active males (Age = 22.9 ± 3.9 years) were randomly assigned into two groups: control, level walking (CG, N = 8) and downhill walking (DWG, N = 9). Individuals performed the following procedures, in different days: 1) Maximal voluntary contractions to determine peak torque (PT) and rate of torque development (RTD) at different time intervals from the onset of muscle contraction. The test was performed before (Pre) and after (Post) a 4-week downhill walking training period. PT and peak RTD did not change after the training period (p > 0.05). However, there was significant increase in RTD at 150 ms and 200 ms after the onset of muscle contraction (p < 0.05). Additionally, the electromyographic activity (root mean square) of the biceps femoris and semitendineous muscles presented an increase after the training period (p < 0.05). Thus, downhill walking training can promote improvement RTD and muscle activity in the late phase of muscle contraction, which can have important implications during downhill walking, in which a rapid action of KF can help body balance against the disturbance generated by the slope.


Resumo O ato de caminhar envolve pequenos ajustes para manutenção do equilíbrio corporal. No entanto, a demanda por estes ajustes pode ser diferente na caminhada no declive. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o efeito do treinamento periodizado de caminhada em declive na resposta neuromuscular dos músculos flexores do joelho (KF). Dezessete indivíduos ativos do gênero masculino (Idade = 22,9 ± 3,9 anos) foram divididos randomicamente em dois grupos: controle, com caminhada no plano (CG, n = 8), e caminhada em declive (DWG, n = 9). Os indivíduos realizaram os seguintes procedimentos, em diferentes dias: 1) Contrações voluntárias máximas para determinar o pico de torque (PT) e a taxa de desenvolvimento de torque (RTD) em diferentes intervalos de tempo após o início da contração. Os testes foram realizados antes (Pré) e após (Pós) um período de quatro semanas de treinamento de caminhada em declive. O PT e a RTD pico não apresentaram mudança após o período de treinamento (p < 0,05). No entanto, houve aumento significante na RTD nos momentos 150 e 200 ms para o grupo DWG (p < 0,05). Além disso, a atividade eletromiográfica (root mean square) do músculo bíceps femoral e do semitendinoso apresentou aumento após o período de treinamento (p < 0,05). Portanto, o treinamento de caminhada em declive pode promover aumento na RTD em sua fase tardia e na ativação muscular, o que pode ter implicações em condições de caminhada no declive, que podem auxiliar a estabilizar o corpo contra a perturbação gerada pelo declive.

BACKGROUND: Several strategies have been used to improve running economy (RE). Defined as the oxygen uptake required at a given submaximal running velocity, it has been considered a key aerobic parameter related to endurance running performance. In this context, concurrent strength and endurance training has been considered an effective method, although conclusions on the optimal concurrent training cannot yet be drawn. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of concurrent training on RE in endurance running athletes and identify the effects of subject characteristics and concurrent training variables on the magnitude of RE improvement. METHODS: We conducted a computerized search of the PubMed and Web of Science databases, and references of original studies were searched for further relevant studies. The analysis comprised 20 effects in 16 relevant studies published up to August 2015. The outcomes were calculated as the difference in percentage change between control and experimental groups (% change) and data were presented as mean ± 95 % confidence limit. Meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model and, in addition, simple and multiple meta-regression analyses were used to identify effects of age, training status, number of sessions per week, training duration, type of strength training, and neuromuscular performance on % change in RE. RESULTS: The concurrent training program had a small beneficial effect on RE (% change = -3.93 ± 1.19 %; p < 0.001). In addition, explosive (% change = -4.83 ± 1.53; p < 0.001) and heavy weight (% change = -3.65 ± 2.74; p = 0.009) training programs produced similar improvements in RE, while isometric training (% change = -2.20 ± 4.37; p = 0.324) in selected studies did not induce a significant effect. The multiple linear meta-regression analysis showed that all the differences between % changes could be explained by including the above-mentioned characteristics of subjects and weight training program elements. This model showed that the magnitude of the % change in RE was larger for longer training duration (ß = -0.83 ± 0.72, p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Explosive training and heavy weight training are effective concurrent training methods aiming to improve RE within a few weeks. However, long-term training programs seem to be necessary when the largest possible improvement in RE is desired.

Abstract Eccentric exercise training using low intensity-high volume approach has been performed to improve maximal muscle strength and power. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of short-term downhill walking and level walking training on lower limb strength and maximal oxygen uptake of active individuals. Eighteen young adults were divided into level walking group (n = 9) or downhill walking training group (n = 9). Both groups performed a four-week training program. The level walking group performed seven level walking sessions per week, while the downhill walking group walked downhill (-16%) in the same weekly frequency. One week before and one week after the training protocol, maximal oxygen uptake, muscle-bone cross-sectional area and isometric peak torque of knee extensors and plantar flexors were assessed for both groups. A significant group vs. time interaction was found only for cross sectional area of plantar flexors (PF), showing increases for the downhill walking group (112.6 ± 28.9 cm2 vs. 115.9 ± 29 cm2) but not for the level walking group (94.9 ± 23.3 cm2vs. 94.6 ± 228 cm2). Maximal oxygen uptake remained unaltered after training for both groups and IPT was increased after training for both groups. It was concluded that short-term downhill walking training does not seem to be efficient in promoting improvements in cardiorrespiratory fitness of young adults. However, it seems to promote gains in some variables related to neuromuscular fitness.


Resumo O treinamento excêntrico de baixa intensidade e alto volume vem sendo adotado para desenvolver a força e a potência muscular. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar os efeitos do treinamento de caminhada em declive e em plano, em parâmetros de força de membros inferiores e consumo máximo de oxigênio de indivíduos ativos. Dezoito adultos foram separados em grupos de treinamento em plano (GTP - n = 9) em declive (GTD - n = 9). Ambos realizaram um programa de treinamento de 4 semanas. O GTP realizou sete sessões semanais de caminhada no plano, enquanto o GTD caminhou em declive (-16%). Uma semana antes e uma semana após o treinamento, foram medidos o consumo máximo de oxigênio, área de secção transversa músculo-óssea e o pico de torque isométrico dos extensores do joelho e flexores plantares dos participantes. Interação significante grupo-tempo foi identificada apenas para a área de secção transversa dos flexores plantares, demonstrando aumentos para o grupo GTD (112,6 ± 28,9 cm2vs. 115,9 ± 29 cm2), mas não para o GTP (94,9 ± 23,3 cm2vs. 94,6 ± 228 cm2). O consumo máximo de oxigênio permaneceu inalterado após o treinamento para ambos os grupos e o pico de torque isométrico aumentou significantemente após o treinamento para ambos os grupos. Concluímos, então, que um treinamento de caminhada em declive de curto prazo parece não ser eficiente na promoção de melhoras significativas de parâmetros cardiorrespiratórios de adultos jovens, embora seja efetivo no incremento de algumas variáveis relacionadas à aptidão neuromuscular.

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the neuromuscular profile of handball (TH) players during a short-term condensed competition. Nine TH athletes (age: 23 ± 3 years; height: 176.2 ± 10.5 cm; mass: 75.3 ± 8.6 kg) played 5 handball matches in 5 consecutive days and had exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) markers such as soreness (SOR), thigh circumference (CIR), knee range of motion (ROM) and countermovement jump height (CMJ) collected before the first match and at the end of each day of competition. Changes over time in these markers were analyzed. Significant changes were found for all EIMD markers assessed. CMJ significantly decreased at the fourth day of competition when compared to baseline (0.41 ± 0.03 m vs. 0.45 ± 0.02 m). ROM decreased on the first day of competition and remained stable until the last day of competition (baseline: 126.5 ± 7.2º; 1st day: 115.8 ± 5.9º; 2nd day: 115 ± 7º; 3rd day: 113.9 ± 8.8º; 4th day: 114.4 ± 8.6º). SOR and CIR were increased at the second day of competition and remained altered thereafter. It was concluded that the characteristics of short-term condensed competition have led TH athletes to significant EIMD. If not avoided, EIMD might lead to reductions in performance in the most important (final) matches.


Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi medir o perfil neuromuscular de jogadores de handebol durante uma competição em formato de jogos. Nove jogadores de handebol (idade: 23 ± 3 anos; estatura: 176,2 ± 10,5 cm; massa: 75,3 ± 8,6 kg) jogaram cinco partidas da modalidade em cinco dias consecutivos e tiveram marcadores de DM [como percepção subjetiva de dor (PSD), circunferência da coxa (CIR), amplitude de movimento do joelho (ADM) e altura de salto com contra-movimento (AS)] coletados antes da primeira partida e ao final de cada dia de competição. Mudanças ao longo do tempo nesses marcadores foram analisadas. Alterações significantes foram encontradas para todos os marcadores de DM coletados. A AS diminuiu significantemente durante o quarto dia de competição, quando comparado ao valor basal (0,41 ± 0,03 m vs. 0,45 ± 0,02 m). A ADM diminuiu após o primeiro dia de competição e permaneceu comprometida até o último dia (basal: 126,5 ± 7,2º; 1o dia: 115,8 ± 5,9º; 2o dia: 115 ± 7º; 3odia: 113,9 ± 8,8º; 4o dia: 114,4 ± 8,6º). A PSD e a CIR apresentaram aumento durante o segundo dia de competição e permaneceram alteradas até o final da mesma. Concluímos que a característica condensada das competições de handebol no Brasil leva a um quadro de DM significante. Se não evitado, o DM pode levar a comprometimentos no desempenho nas partidas mais importantes da competição (finais).

Postactivation potentiation (PAP) is known to enhance force production. Maximal isometric strength assessment protocols usually consist of two or more maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVCs). The objective of this study was to determine if PAP would influence isometric strength assessment. Healthy male volunteers (n = 23) performed two five-second MVCs separated by a 180-seconds interval. Changes in isometric peak torque (IPT), time to achieve it (tPTI), contractile impulse (CI), root mean square of the electromyographic signal during PTI (RMS), and rate of torque development (RTD), in different intervals, were measured. Significant increases in IPT (240.6 ± 55.7 N·m versus 248.9 ± 55.1 N·m), RTD (746 ± 152 N·m·s(-1) versus 727 ± 158 N·m·s(-1)), and RMS (59.1 ± 12.2% RMSMAX versus 54.8 ± 9.4% RMSMAX) were found on the second MVC. tPTI decreased significantly on the second MVC (2373 ± 1200 ms versus 2784 ± 1226 ms). We conclude that a first MVC leads to PAP that elicits significant enhancements in strength-related variables of a second MVC performed 180 seconds later. If disconsidered, this phenomenon might bias maximal isometric strength assessment, overestimating some of these variables.

Eccentric-based exercise is known to induce muscle damage (MD). The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of downhill walking (DW) sessions on MD and aerobic markers in young adults. Eight male subjects were submitted to a 4-week DW periodized exercise program. Subjects' soreness (SOR) was assessed each training day. Serum creatine quinase activity (CK) was collected before the first training session, and at the end of each of the four weeks. Oxygen uptake (VO2) and perceived exertion (PE) were assessed during the last training session every week. Increases in SOR were found only at the third and fourth training days. Increased CK concentration was found at the third training week. No significant increases in VO2 and PE were found throughout the program. We concluded that DW sessions elicit significant MD, but not enough to impair it in further sessions. Therefore, DW can be used as a training protocol following proper periodization.


Exercícios excêntricos costumam induzir dano muscular (DM). O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar respostas aeróbias e de DM a sessões de caminhada em declive (CaED) em adultos. Oito voluntários realizaram um programa periodizado de treinamento de CaED. A dor muscular (DMIT) foi coletada durante todos os dias de treinamento. A atividade sérica de creatina quinase (CK) foi coletada antes da primeira sessão e ao final das semanas 1-4. O consumo de oxigênio (VO2) e a percepção de esforço (PE) foram coletados durante a última sessão de treinamento de cada semana. Aumentos na DMIT foram identificados no terceiro e quarto dias de treinamento. Os valores de CK se apresentaram aumentados na terceira semana. Não foram identificadas diferenças nos valores obtidos de VO2 e PE. Concluímos que sessões de CaED induzem DM, porém este não afeta sessões posteriores. Portanto, a CaED pode ser utilizada como um método de treinamento, possibilitando sua periodização.


Ejercicio excéntrico desacostumbrado es conocido por inducir daño muscular (DM). El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar las respuestas a sesiones de caminar cuesta abajo (DW) en los adultos jóvenes, la evaluación de MD y los marcadores de aeróbicos. Ocho sujetos varones fueron sometidos a un programa de ejercicios de periodización de DW de 4 semanas. El dolor de los sujetos (SOR) se evaluó todos los días de entrenamiento. Actividad de la creatina quinasa sérica (CK) se recogió antes de la primera sesión de entrenamiento, y al final de las semanas 1-4. El consumo de oxígeno (VO2) y la percepción subjetiva del esfuerzo (PE) se evaluaron durante la última sesión de entrenamiento cada semana. Los aumentos en SOR se encontraron sólo en los tercero y cuarto día de entrenamiento. El aumento de la concentración de CK se encuentra en la tercera semana de entrenamiento. No hay un aumento significativo en el VO2 y PE se encuentran en todo el programa. Llegamos a la conclusión de que las sesiones DW provocan MD significativo, pero no lo suficiente como para poner en peligro otras sesiones. Por lo tanto, DW puede ser adoptado como método de entrenamiento, permitiendo periodización adecuada.

Running economy (RE), defined as the energy demand for a given velocity of submaximal running, has been identified as a critical factor of overall distance running performance. Plyometric and resistance trainings, performed during a relatively short period of time (~15-30 days), have been successfully used to improve RE in trained athletes. However, these exercise types, particularly when they are unaccustomed activities for the individuals, may cause delayed onset muscle soreness, swelling, and reduced muscle strength. Some studies have demonstrated that exercise-induced muscle damage has a negative impact on endurance running performance. Specifically, the muscular damage induced by an acute bout of downhill running has been shown to reduce RE during subsequent moderate and high-intensity exercise (>65% VO2max). However, strength exercise (i.e., jumps, isoinertial and isokinetic eccentric exercises) seems to impair RE only for subsequent high-intensity exercise (~90% VO2max). Finally, a single session of resistance exercise or downhill running (i.e., repeated bout effect) attenuates changes in indirect markers of muscle damage and blunts changes in RE.

O objetivo foi comparar a magnitude do efeito protetor (EP) contra o dano muscular (DM) induzido por uma sessão de exercícios excêntricos (EEM) entre os extensores do joelho e os flexores do cotovelo. Doze sujeitos do gênero masculino foram divididos em 2 grupos, braços (GB) e pernas (GP), e realizaram 2 sessões de EEM. Foram coletados 3 marcadores de DM, sendo eles, pico de torque isométrico (PTI), creatina quinase (CK) e percepção subjetiva de dor (PSD), antes, imediatamente após (com exceção da CK) e 48 horas após cada sessão de EEM. Foi encontrada queda significante de PTI e aumento significante de CK e PSD tanto imediatamente e 48 horas após a primeira sessão de EEM para o GB. No GP houve aumento significante de CK 48 horas após os EEM e da PSD imediatamente após os EEM, decorrentes da primeira sessão. No GB, a segunda sessão apenas provocou queda de PTI imediatamente após os EEM, enquanto no GP houve aumento significante apenas na PSD imediatamente após a segunda sessão de EEM. Apenas a CK apresentou EP para ambos os grupos. Pudemos concluir que o EP foi maior para o GB em comparação com o GP. Esse fenômeno pode ter ocorrido em detrimento da existência de um EP prévio para o GP, uma vez que este membro realiza contrações excêntricas intensas com maior freqüência no dia-a-dia, quando comparados com os GB.


The objective was to compare the magnitude of the repeated bout effect (RBE) induced by an eccentric exercise session (EES) between the knee extensors and elbow flexors. Twelve male subjects were divided into two groups, arms (AG) and legs (LG), and executed two EES. We collected three markers of muscle damage, they were, isometric peak torque (IPT), creatine kinase (CK) and subjective perception of pain (PSD) before, immediately after (except CK) and 48 hours after each EES. Significant decrease in PTI was found as well as significant increase in CK and PSD both immediately and 48 hours after the first EES for the AG. In the LG there was a significant increase in CK 48 hours after, and PSD immediately after the first EES. In the AG, the second EES caused a drop of only PTI immediately after it, while the LG presented a significant increase only in PSD immediately after the second EES. RBE was found only for CK in both groups. We concluded that the RBE was higher in the AG compared to the LG. This phenomenon may have occurred over the existence of a protection for the LG, since this member performs intense eccentric contractions more frequently in day-to-day, compared to AG.
