RESUMO

An mpox outbreak occurred suddenly and rapidly spread worldwide in 2022. Research has demonstrated a link between the sexual behavior of men who have sex with men (MSM) and the contraction of mpox. This study assessed the factors related to mpox-vaccine uptake among MSM in Taiwan, focusing on the roles of information sources and emotional problems. In total, 389 MSM participated in an online survey. Data on the participants' vaccination statuses; anxiety symptoms, which were assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; depressive symptoms, which were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale; and risk perceptions of contracting mpox were collected. Factors related to mpox-vaccine uptake were examined using a multivariable logistic regression model. The results revealed that MSM who were older (p < 0.001), perceived a higher risk of contracting mpox (p = 0.040), and received mpox information from health-care providers (p < 0.001) were more likely to receive mpox vaccination, whereas MSM who reported a greater severity of depression (p = 0.017) were less likely to receive mpox vaccination. However, age did not moderate the associations of perceiving a higher risk of contracting mpox, receiving mpox information from health-care providers, and depression with having an mpox vaccination. Health-care providers should consider these factors when developing intervention programs for enhancing mpox-vaccine uptake among MSM.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit atypical brain activities in the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes. The study aimed to investigate the effects of standardized weighted low-resolution electromagnetic tomography Z-score neurofeedback (swLZNFB) on symptoms of depression and anxiety, electroencephalography (EEG) parameters, and deep brain activities in patients with MDD. METHOD: Forty-eight patients with MDD comorbid with anxiety symptoms were assigned to the swLZNFB group and the control group. Participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and a 5-minute resting EEG at the pre-and post-tests. The swLZNFB group received ten sessions of one-hour treatment twice weekly. The control group received treatment as usual. The scores for BDI-II and BAI, number of EEG abnormalities, percentage of EEG abnormalities, and current source density (CSD) measured in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and amygdala were compared at pre-and post-tests between the two groups. RESULTS: There were decreased scores of BDI-II and BAI, number of EEG abnormalities, and percentage of EEG abnormalities at post-test compared with pre-test in the swLZNFB group, and lower scores of BDI-II and BAI at post-test in the swLZNFB group compared with the control group. Moreover, decreased CSD of beta1 and beta3 in the PFC, ACC, PCC, and amygdala at post-test compared to pre-test in the swLZNFB group. LIMITATIONS: Not a randomized controlled trial. CONCLUSION: Ten sessions of swLZNFB reduced clinical symptoms and atypical brain activities, it serves as a potential psychological intervention for patients with MDD.

RESUMO

Individuals with schizophrenia are more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than are members of the general population. No prospective study has examined the associations of multi-dimensional factors with the motivation to receive vaccination against COVID-19. This follow-up study investigated the effects of individual (sociodemographic and illness characteristics, depression, and self-esteem), environmental (perceived social support), and individual-environmental interaction factors (self-stigma and loneliness) on the motivation to receive vaccination against COVID-19 and the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses received one year later among 300 individuals with schizophrenia. The associations of baseline factors with motivation to receive vaccination against COVID-19 and the number of vaccine doses received 1 year later were examined through linear regression analysis. The results indicated that greater loneliness (p < 0.01) and being married or cohabitating (p < 0.05) at baseline were significantly associated with lower motivation to receive vaccination against COVID-19 at follow-up. Disorganization (p < 0.05) at baseline was significantly associated with fewer COVID-19 vaccine doses at follow-up; greater motivation to receive vaccination was significantly associated with more COVID-19 vaccine doses at follow-up (p < 0.001). Health professionals should consider the identified predictors while developing intervention programs aimed at enhancing vaccination against COVID-19 in individuals with schizophrenia.

RESUMO

Herein, we present a facile synthetic methodology to produce a range of N-(CH2-aryl/alkyl)-substituted N-(pyridin-2-yl)benzamides via palladium-mediated C(sp3)-H bond activation. The N-methyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl)benzamide precursor was first reacted with palladium(II) acetate in a stoichiometric manner to obtain the key dinuclear palladacycle intermediates, whose structures were elucidated by mass spectrometric, NMR spectroscopic, and X-ray crystallographic studies in detail. The subsequent C(sp3)-H bond functionalizations on the N-methyl group of the starting substrate show facile productions of the corresponding N-(CH2-aryl/alkyl)-substituted N-(pyridin-2-yl)benzamides with good functional group tolerance. A plausible mechanism was proposed based on density functional theory calculations in conjunction with kinetic isotope effect experiments. Finally, the synthetic transformation from the prepared N-(CH2-aryl)-N-(pyridin-2-yl)benzamides through debenzoylation to N-(CH2-aryl)-2-aminopyridine was successfully demonstrated.

RESUMO

This cross-sectional study investigated the mediating effects of emotional problems including depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms on the association between bullying victimization and quality of life (QoL) among adolescents with ADHD in Taiwan. A total of 171 adolescents diagnosed as having ADHD participated in this study. Adolescents completed the School Bullying Experience Questionnaire, the Taiwanese Quality of Life Questionnaire for Adolescents, the Taiwanese version of the Children's Depression Inventory and the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children. Caregivers completed the Chinese version of the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Version IV Scale. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to examine the relationships among the variables. The results of SEM revealed that bullying victimization indirectly correlated with QoL through the mediation of emotional problems in adolescents with ADHD, whereas ADHD and ODD symptoms did not mediate the association between bullying victimization and QoL. Bullying victimization should be actively prevented and intervened on to ensure better QoL in adolescents with ADHD. Moreover, emotional problems should be alleviated among adolescents with ADHD with bullying victimization experience to maintain their QoL.

RESUMO

Due to the complexity of socio-economic-related issues, people thought of housing market as a chaotic nucleus situated at the intersection of neighboring sciences. It has been known that the dependence of house features on the residential property value can be estimated employing the well-established hedonic regression analysis method in teams of location characteristic, neighborhood characteristic and structure characteristic. However, to further assess the roles of urban infrastructures in housing markets, we proposed a new kind of volatility measure for house prices utilizing the Lie symmetry analysis of quantum theory based on Schrödinger equation, mainly focusing on the effects of transportation systems and public parks on residential property values. Based on the municipal open government data regularly collected for four cities, including Boston, Milwaukee, Taipei and Tokyo, and all spatial sampling sites were featured by United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Map, transportation and park were modelled as perturbations to the quantum states generated by the feature space in response to the environmental amenities with different spatial extents. In an attempt to ascertain the intrinsic impact of the location-dependent price information obtained, the similarity functions associated with the Schrödinger equation were considered to facilitate revealing the city amenities capitalizing into house prices. By examining the spatial spillover phenomena of house prices in the four cities investigated, it was found that the mass transit systems and the public green lands possessed the infinitesimal generators of Lie point symmetries Y2 and Y5, respectively. Compared statistically with the common performance criteria, including mean absolute error (MAE), mean squared error (MSE) and, root mean squared error (RMSE) obtained by hedonic pricing model, the Lie symmetry analysis of the Schrödinger equation approach developed herein was successfully carried out. The invariant-theoretical characterizations of economics-related phenomena are consonant with the observed residential property values of the cities internationally, ultimately leading to develop a new perspective in the global financial architecture.

RESUMO

Dimming and scattering control are two of the major features of smart windows, which provide adjustable sunlight intensity and protect the privacy of people in a building. A hybrid photo- and electrical-controllable smart window that exploits salt and photochromic dichroic dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal was developed. The photochromic dichroic dye causes a change in transmittance from high to low upon exposure to sunlight. When the light source is removed, the smart window returns from colored to colorless. The salt-doped cholesteric liquid crystal can be bi-stably switched from transparent into the scattering state by a low-frequency voltage pulse and switched back to its transparent state by a high-frequency voltage pulse. In its operating mode, an LC smart window can be passively dimmed by sunlight and the haze can be actively controlled by applying an electrical field to it; it therefore exhibits four optical states-transparent, scattering, dark clear, and dark opaque. Each state is stable in the absence of an applied voltage. This smart window can automatically dim when the sunlight gets stronger, and according to user needs, actively adjust the haze to achieve privacy protection.

RESUMO

Despite patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) were reported of revealing gait disorders and balance problems, there is still lack of objective quantitative measurement of gait patterns and balance capability of AD patients. Based on an inertial-sensor-based wearable device, this paper develops gait and balance analyzing algorithms to obtain quantitative measurements and explores the essential indicators from the measurements for AD diagnosis. The gait analyzing algorithm is composed of stride detection followed by gait cycle decomposition so that gait parameters are developed from the decomposed gait details. On the other hand, the balance is measured by the sway speed in anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) directions of the projection path of body's center of mass (COM). These devised gait and balance parameters were explored on twenty-one AD patients and fifty healthy controls (HCs). Special evaluation procedure including single-task and dual-task walking experiments for observing the cognitive function and attention is also devised for the comparison of AD and HC groups. Experimental results show that the wearable instrument with the designed gait and balance analyzing system is a promising tool for automatically analyzing gait information and balance ability, serving as assistant indicators for early diagnosis of AD.
