OBJECTIVE: Dentistry produces waste contributing to climate change and adverse health outcomes, thus reducing waste is essential; however, there has been minimal emphasis on sustainability or climate action in dentistry. Waste audits quantify the type and amount of waste produced and may inform waste reduction strategies. We conducted a waste audit to identify areas of potential waste reduction and recommend interventions to reduce waste. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we conducted a waste audit of garbage produced during a typical 4-hour pre-clinical restorative dentistry simulation exercise. The sample was composed of 72 second-year dental students. This exercise is part of a standard curriculum with a uniform format regarding supplies used and participants. Potentially infectious materials were not used during this exercise. RESULTS: In total, 26.6 kg of waste was discarded. Plastic was the largest contributor by mass (57.5%), followed by paper barriers (19.6%), then impression materials (6.5%). We found 894 gloves and 70 masks discarded. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these findings, we categorized waste reduction opportunities into policy changes, purchasing sustainable materials, and increasing awareness through education. Specific suggested actions include: relaxing glove and gown requirements during laboratory simulations; replacing single use items with more sustainable options; increasing use of intraoral scanners; and posting informational signage with examples of what can be recycled.

Chronic high-fat diet (HFD) consumption causes ovarian dysfunction in rodents. Acute dietary treatment with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) increases oocyte quality and ovarian reserve at advanced reproductive age. We hypothesized that DHA supplementation after HFD exposure reverses HFD-induced ovarian defects. We conducted a dietary intervention with reversal to chow, DHA-supplemented chow, or DHA-supplemented HFD after HFD consumption. After 10 weeks, HFD-fed mice had impaired estrous cyclicity, decreased primordial follicles, and altered ovarian expression of 24 genes compared to chow controls. Diet reversal to either chow or chow + DHA restored estrous cyclicity, however only chow + DHA appeared to mitigated the impact of HFD on ovarian reserve. All dietary interventions restored HFD-dysregulated gene expression to chow levels. We found no association between follicular fluid DHA levels and ovarian reserve. In conclusion our data suggest some benefit of DHA supplementation after HFD, particularly in regards to ovarian gene expression, however complete restoration of ovarian function was not achieved.

Some individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) experience not only cognitive deficits but also a decline in motor function, including postural balance. This pilot study sought to estimate the feasibility, user experience, and effects of a novel sensor-based balance training program. Patients with amnestic MCI (mean age 78.2 yr) were randomized to an intervention group (IG, n = 12) or control group (CG, n = 10). The IG underwent balance training (4 wk, twice a week) that included weight shifting and virtual obstacle crossing. Real-time visual/audio lower-limb motion feedback was provided from wearable sensors. The CG received no training. User experience was measured by a questionnaire. Postintervention effects on balance (center of mass sway during standing with eyes open [EO] and eyes closed), gait (speed, variability), cognition, and fear of falling were measured. Eleven participants (92%) completed the training and expressed fun, safety, and helpfulness of sensor feedback. Sway (EO, p = 0.04) and fear of falling (p = 0.02) were reduced in the IG compared to the CG. Changes in other measures were nonsignificant. Results suggest that the sensor-based training paradigm is well accepted in the target population and beneficial for improving postural control. Future studies should evaluate the added value of the sensor-based training compared to traditional training.

Recent studies have established that the T1R3 receptor plays a central role in the taste-mediated ingestive response to sweeteners by mice. First, transgenic mice lacking the gene for T1R3, Tas1r3, show dramatically reduced lick responsiveness to most sweeteners. Second, strains with the taster allele of Tas1r3 (T strains) are more sensitive to low sweetener concentrations than strains with the nontaster allele (NT strains) and consume greater quantities of low- to midrange concentrations of sweeteners during 24-h tests. We asked how Tas1r3 polymorphisms influence the initial licking responses of four T strains (FVB/NJ, SWR/J, SM/J, and C57BL/6J) and four NT strains (BALB/cJ, 129P3/J, DBA/2J, and C3H/HeJ) to two sweeteners (sucrose and SC-45647, an artificial sweetener). We used the initial licking response as a measure of the taste-mediated ingestive response because its brief duration minimizes the potential contribution of nontaste factors (e.g., negative and positive postingestive feedback). Further, we used two complimentary short-term intake tests (the brief-access taste test and a novel 1-min preference test) to reduce the possibility that our findings were an epiphenomenon of a specific testing procedure. In both tests, the T strains were more responsive than the NT strains to low concentrations of each sweetener. At higher concentrations, however, there was considerable overlap between the T and NT strains. In fact, the initial licking response of several NT strains was more vigorous than (or equivalent to) that of several T strains. There was also considerable variation among strains with the same Tas1r3 allele. We conclude that Tas1r3 polymorphisms contribute to strain differences in initial lick responsiveness to low but not high concentrations of sweeteners.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to determine if subjective evaluation of quality of distance vision with the Acuvue Bifocal contact lens could be correlated with high- and low-contrast acuity scores. METHODS: LogMAR visual acuities of 20 non-presbyopic subjects were measured using high and low-contrast Bailey-Lovie charts. Each subject wore an Acuvue Bifocal contact lens with add powers +1.00, +1.50, +2.00, and +2.50, each optimized for best distance acuity. RESULTS: Subjects showed significantly decreased acuities with increasing add; a low-contrast target heightened this effect. Subjects reported a reduction in quality of distance vision, increasing fluctuation, ghosting/shadows, and halos around lights that correlated with increasing add power. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the Acuvue Bifocal contact lens may be expected to perform best for presbyopes with low-to-moderate bifocal add requirement, and that clinicians should anticipate decreased low-contrast acuity and reduced overall quality of vision as add powers are increased.
