RESUMO

Thermal kinetic parameters are important for establishing the relationship between the aging process, time, and temperature, which would help predict the thermal aging lifetime and stability in the application of polymer materials. We developed a multi-channel in situ detecting device, which provided an efficient method for IR spectrum measurement. The thermal aging process of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) at several constant temperatures (100 °C, 110 °C, 120 °C, 135 °C, and 150 °C) had been studied by the multi-channel in situ infrared reaction device. The kinetic parameters (Eα) were calculated from the absorbance intensity of -C-O-, -C[double bond, length as m-dash]O, -CH3, and -OH. The -OH proved to be the active site of PVB during thermal aging, and a possible thermal aging mechanism of PVB was proposed. We proved the method using a combination of a multi-channel in situ reaction device and FTIR was suitable to study the aging mechanism and kinetics of polymers.

RESUMO

Parents' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are crucial in the selection of the treatment strategy and how to care for children with ADHD. However, little is known about parents' conception in mainland China. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to assess this information with 25 true/false questions regarding ADHD, and other questions investigating the methods of acquiring ADHD-related information, treatment preference, and concerns about ADHD treatment strategy. We found that the average score of all the participants was 17.42 ± 2.69 (total of 25 points) for the questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about ADHD. This indicated that the parents had insufficient knowledge of this disease profile. They always accessed specialized information through mobile internet. For the treatment options, the investigated parents chose psychotherapy treatment rather than medications, in that they worried about the side effects of medication and expected to find alternative treatment strategies. The present investigation demonstrated that most parents lack knowledge about ADHD in treatment decision making in China. Medical professionals should provide parents with evidence-based ADHD-related information to help them understand this disease.

RESUMO

The ultrafast dynamics of photo-OxaDiBenzocycloOctyne (photo-ODIBO) photo-dissociation was studied using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Steady-state UV-Vis, time-dependent density functional theory, and 350 nm and 321 nm transient absorption studies are reported. Photo-ODIBO excitation with 321 nm and 350 nm light-induced photodecarbonylation of the cyclopropenone functional group results in the formation of ODIBO. The presence of the photoproduct was confirmed by the results of steady-state photolysis experiments and the observation of absorption signatures of ODIBO in the photo-ODIBO transient absorption spectra. Analysis of the latter revealed the underlying photochemical mechanisms and associated time constants, following excitation of the samples. The dynamics show a multi-exponential decay process, following the dissociation of photo-ODIBO into an excited state of the photoproduct ODIBO within <294 fs after 321 nm excitation. 350 nm excitation, on the other hand, is shown to produce ground state ODIBO via an intermediate species. Additional transient absorption measurements were performed directly on the photoproduct ODIBO to help distinguish spectral signatures associated with these processes.

RESUMO

Some trace elements may participate in the pathogenesis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to investigate the trace element status of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and lead (Pb) in children with ADHD, and to compare them with normal controls. Associations between examined elements and SNAP-IV rating scores of ADHD symptoms were also assessed. Four hundred nineteen children with ADHD (8.8 ± 2.1 years) and 395 matched normal controls (8.9 ± 1.7 years) were recruited in the study. The concentrations of Zn, Fe, Cu, Mg, and Pb in the whole blood were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. Lower zinc levels (P < 0.001) and the number out of normal ranges (P = 0.015) were found in children with ADHD when compared with the normal control group. The difference remained when adjusting the factor of BMI z-score. No significant between-group differences were found in levels of other elements. Zinc levels were negatively correlated with parent-rated scores of inattentive subscale of SNAP-IV (r = - 0.40) as well as with total score of SNAP-IV (r = - 0.24). Other significant associations were not observed. The present results indicated that there were alterations in blood levels of zinc, which was associated with the symptom scores of ADHD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are recognized as a pivotal promoter in cancer initiation and development. However, the role of CAFs in the progression and metastasis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has not been fully elucidated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lymphatic vessel density (LVD) and microvessel density (MVD) and the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) were evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 86 cases of OSCC. The correlations between α-SMA expression and MMP-9 expression, LVD, MVD, and other clinicopathological parameters were analyzed. In vitro invasion assay was performed to assess the effect of CAFs on the invasion of OSCC cells. We also investigated the effect of CAFs on the angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis by inoculating CAFs with OSCC cells into nude mice subcutaneously. RESULTS: Positive expression of α-SMA protein was detected in 69.8% of the tumors. Increased α-SMA expression was correlated strongly with enhanced tumor invasion, higher tumor grade, increased risk of recurrence, lymph node involvement, and higher peritumoral lymphatic vessel density and microvessel density (P < 0.05). CAFs induced more cancer cells to invade relative to normal fibroblasts (NFs) (P < 0.05). Compared with co-injection of OSCC cells and NFs or injection of tumor cells alone, co-injection of OSCC cells and CAFs resulted in earlier tumor formation and bigger tumor volume accompanied with increased angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: CAFs may play critical roles in OSCC progression as an inducer of tumor invasion, angiogenesis, and lymphangiogenesis. Therapeutic strategies targeting CAFs against OSCC is promising and need further exploration.

RESUMO

Selective derivatization of solvent-exposed cysteine residues in peptides and proteins is achieved by brief irradiation of an aqueous solution containing 3-(hydroxymethyl)-2-naphthol derivatives (NQMPs) with 350 nm fluorescent lamp. NQMP can be conjugated with various moieties, such as PEG, dyes, carbohydrates, or possess a fragment for further selective derivatization, e.g., biotin, azide, alkyne, etc. Attractive features of this labeling approach include an exceptionally fast rate of the reaction and a requirement for low equivalence of the reagent. The NQMP-thioether linkage is stable under ambient conditions, survives protein digestion and MS analysis. Irradiation of NQMP-labeled protein in a dilute solution (<40 µM) or in the presence of a vinyl ether results in a traceless release of the substrate. The reversible biotinylation of bovine serum albumin, as well as capture and release of this protein using NeutrAvidin Agarose resin beads has been demonstrated.

RESUMO

Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) plays a key role in cell-excellular matrix interactions mediated by integrins and several growth factors, regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and migration. It has also been implicated in the development and progression in several malignancies involving epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). However, the correlations between ILK and EMT markers and the progression of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) have not been well elucidated. Here, by immunohistochemistry, we studied the expression of ILK, Snail, E-cadherin, and N-cadherin in 94 SACC specimens and analyzed their correlations with clinicopathologic characteristics. Positive expression of ILK protein was detected in 76.6 % of the tumors. Increased expression of ILK and Snail and decreased E-cadherin expression correlated strongly with tumor solid type (P = 0.017, P = 0.008, and P = 0.038, respectively), advanced TNM stage (P = 0.021, P = 0.034, and P = 0.009, respectively), and increased risk of recurrence (P = 0.023, P = 0.011, and P = 0.039, respectively) and distant metastasis (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, and P = 0.001, respectively). Moreover, up-regulation of Snail and N-cadherin and down-regulation of E-cadherin correlated significantly with ILK over-expression (P < 0.001, P = 0.001, and P < 0.001, respectively) and a neural-invasive phenotype (P = 0.017, P = 0.002, and P < 0.001, respectively). Taken together, our results suggest that ILK may have an important role in progression and metastasis of SACC, possibly through EMT involving up-regulation of Snail and consequent aberrant expression of E-cadherin and N-cadherin. ILK should be considered as a potential therapeutic molecular target for patients with SACC.
