RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early palliative care (EPC) benefits some cancers, but its clinical outcomes differ depending on patients' racial and ethnic disparities, and customs. To determine whether EPC improves symptoms, emotional distress, and quality of life among Taiwanese patients with early or advanced-stage head and neck cancer (HNC). METHODS: Based on participants' pathological stages, they were categorized as having early and advanced-stage HNC. Those willing and unwilling to undergo EPC were assigned to the EPC and standard groups, respectively. Their daily cancer-related symptoms were assessed using the Distress Thermometer (DT) and MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI), whose scores' concurrent validity was evaluated using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Core Quality of Life (EORTC-QLQ-C30) and Head and Neck 35 (EORTC-QLQ-H&N35) questionnaires. RESULTS: Patients (n = 93) diagnosed with HNC at Taiwan's Chia-Yi Christian Hospital from November 2020 to October 2022 were recruited. The patients voluntarily split into two groups: EPC groups and standard groups (23 and 11 in early-stage; 46 and 13 in advanced-stage, respectively). DT assessment showed significant emotional distress improvements for all patients with HNC who received EPC. The EORTC-QLQ-C30 questionnaire indicated that, compared to standard interventions, EPC groups significantly improved the quality of life and some symptoms for both early and advanced-stage HNC patients. However, the EORTC-QLQ-H&N35 questionnaire found no significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, advanced-stage patients' anticancer treatment completion rates with EPC and standard interventions were 95.35% and 75%, respectively. CONCLUSION: EPC improves symptoms, emotional distress, quality of life, and treatment completion rates in Taiwanese patients with early or advanced-stage HNC. Nonetheless, further extensive clinical studies are required for validation.

RESUMO

Tennis is a popular sport, and the introduction of technology has allowed players to diversify their training. Tennis ball tracking is currently a focal point, serving not only to assist referees but also to enhance sports analysis. We introduce the Tennis Shot Side-View and Top-View Dataset, which serves as an invaluable resource for analyzing tennis movements and verifying landing positions after flight. This dataset combines side-view and top-view video clips, capturing various shot types and player movements from both outdoor and indoor fields. The dataset includes the actual ball positions of each clip for verification purposes. The Tennis Shot Side-View and Top-View Dataset represents a significant advancement in tennis research. Its multidimensional nature opens doors for in-depth player analysis, performance enhancement, and strategy development. We believe that this dataset will be a valuable asset to the tennis community, fostering innovation and excellence in the sport.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Chronic physical disease (CPD) makes life filled with many negative events in adolescents, but not all adolescents experiencing negative life events proceed to develop emotional distress, only those with low emotional distress tolerance (EDT). A valid and reliable scale to measure EDT in CPD adolescents is important for caring for their emotional distress. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to translate the 15-item English version Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS) into a Chinese version and then validate the scale for measuring EDT of adolescents with CPD. METHODS: The 15-item English version DTS was translated into a Chinese version using the translation guidelines for cross-cultural research. Two cohorts of adolescents with CPD were recruited from four hospitals in southern Taiwan, with the first cohort including 124 adolescents with CPD employed to conduct exploratory factor analysis, corrected item-total correlation and reliability testing, while the second cohort, consisting of 238 adolescents with CPD, was utilized to examine confirmatory factor analysis and concurrent validity. RESULTS: The two-factor nine-item Chinese version DTS for Adolescents with CPD (C-DTS-A) was developed. Lower scores of the C-DTS-A were significantly associated with higher diabetes distress, poorer self-management, and worse glycaemic control; their correlation coefficients sequentially were -.40, .17 and -.23. Cronbach's α and the test-retest reliability of the two-factor C-DTS-A ranged from .81 to .87 and from .79 to .89, respectively. CONCLUSION: The two-factor nine-item C-DTS-A with good cross-cultural translation quality was a reliable and valid scale to assess EDT for adolescents with CPD.

RESUMO

Our aim was to develop a machine learning-based predictor for early mortality and severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in very-low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants in Taiwan. We collected retrospective data from VLBW infants, dividing them into two cohorts: one for model development and internal validation (Cohort 1, 2016-2021), and another for external validation (Cohort 2, 2022). Primary outcomes included early mortality, severe IVH, and early poor outcomes (a combination of both). Data preprocessing involved 23 variables, with the top four predictors identified as gestational age, birth body weight, 5-min Apgar score, and endotracheal tube ventilation. Six machine learning algorithms were employed. Among 7471 infants analyzed, the selected predictors consistently performed well across all outcomes. Logistic regression and neural network models showed the highest predictive performance (AUC 0.81-0.90 in both internal and external validation) and were well-calibrated, confirmed by calibration plots and the lowest two mean Brier scores (0.0685 and 0.0691). We developed a robust machine learning-based outcome predictor using only four accessible variables, offering valuable prognostic information for parents and aiding healthcare providers in decision-making.

RESUMO

The concept of ecology, historically rooted in the economy of nature, currently needs to evolve to encompass the intricate web of interactions among humans and various organisms in the environment, which are influenced by anthropogenic forces. In this review, the definition of ecology has been adapted to address the dynamic interplay of energy, resources, and information shaping both natural and artificial ecosystems. Previously, 3D (and 4D) printing technologies have been presented as potential tools within this ecological framework, promising a new economy for nature. However, despite the considerable scientific discourse surrounding both ecology and 3D printing, there remains a significant gap in research exploring the interplay between these directions. Therefore, a holistic review of incorporating ecological principles into 3D printing practices is presented, emphasizing environmental sustainability, resource efficiency, and innovation. Furthermore, the 'unecological' aspects of 3D printing, disadvantages related to legal aspects, intellectual property, and legislation, as well as societal impacts, are underlined. These presented ideas collectively suggest a roadmap for future research and practice. This review calls for a more comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted impacts of 3D printing and the development of responsible practices aligned with ecological goals.

RESUMO

Lethal toxin (LT) is the critical virulence factor of Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax. One common symptom observed in patients with anthrax is thrombocytopenia, which has also been observed in mice injected with LT. Our previous study demonstrated that LT induces thrombocytopenia by suppressing megakaryopoiesis, but the precise molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain unknown. In this study, we utilized 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced megakaryocytic differentiation in human erythroleukemia (HEL) cells to identify genes involved in LT-induced megakaryocytic suppression. Through cDNA microarray analysis, we identified Dachshund homolog 1 (DACH1) as a gene that was upregulated upon TPA treatment but downregulated in the presence of TPA and LT, purified from the culture supernatants of B. anthracis. To investigate the function of DACH1 in megakaryocytic differentiation, we employed short hairpin RNA technology to knock down DACH1 expression in HEL cells and assessed its effect on differentiation. Our data revealed that the knockdown of DACH1 expression suppressed megakaryocytic differentiation, particularly in polyploidization. We demonstrated that one mechanism by which B. anthracis LT induces suppression of polyploidization in HEL cells is through the cleavage of MEK1/2. This cleavage results in the downregulation of the ERK signaling pathway, thereby suppressing DACH1 gene expression and inhibiting polyploidization. Additionally, we found that known megakaryopoiesis-related genes, such as FOSB, ZFP36L1, RUNX1, FLI1, AHR, and GFI1B genes may be positively regulated by DACH1. Furthermore, we observed an upregulation of DACH1 during in vitro differentiation of CD34-megakaryocytes and downregulation of DACH1 in patients with thrombocytopenia. In summary, our findings shed light on one of the molecular mechanisms behind LT-induced thrombocytopenia and unveil a previously unknown role for DACH1 in megakaryopoiesis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of scenario-based simulation courses on nursing students' professional knowledge, clinical practice skills, and self-confidence in learning. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: A literature search of six databases including CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Cochrane Library, Embase, Medline, PubMed, and Web of Science was performed on 28 February 2023. REVIEW METHODS: The methodological quality of the studies included was assessed using RoB 2. A random-effects model was used for pooling effect size. The heterogeneity of each pooled analysis was quantified with I2. Egger's regression test was performed to assess publication bias in each pooled analysis. RESULTS: Sixteen trials conducted between 2011 and 2022 were included in the final analysis. Scenario-based simulation courses significantly improved nursing students' professional knowledge (pooled SMD 0.66; 95 % CI 0.33-0.98; p < 0.001), clinical practice skills (pooled SMD 1.45; 95 % CI 0.96-1.94; p < 0.001), and self-confidence in learning (pooled SMD 0.37; 95 % CI 0.12-0.63; p < 0.001). Substantial heterogeneity was observed in the pooled analyses of professional knowledge and clinical practice skills. CONCLUSION: Scenario-based simulation courses appeared to be beneficial for increasing nursing students' professional knowledge, clinical practice abilities, and self-confidence in learning. Therefore, simulation-based learning should be regarded as an essential component of the nursing curriculum as it improves nursing students' skills and prepares them for real-world practice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and alcohol consumption have both increased in recent years, and there is debate as to whether nonheavy alcohol use is safe in MASLD. We analyzed the association between different nonheavy alcohol use patterns and at-risk liver fibrosis among individuals with MASLD. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1072 eligible National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey participants with MASLD who reported nonheavy alcohol consumption. We used vibration-controlled transient elastography to define the primary outcome of at-risk liver fibrosis as >8.2 kPa (stage F2-F4). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the association of different alcohol consumption patterns (average drinks/day, drinking days/week, weekly alcohol intake, type of alcoholic beverage) and at-risk hepatic fibrosis, controlling for demographic/socioeconomic, lifestyle/dietary, and metabolic risk factors. RESULTS: Exclusive liquor or cocktail drinkers had a 5.02-fold odds of at-risk fibrosis (95% CI: 1.15-21.95) compared with non-drinkers when controlling for potential confounders. While consuming an average of 2 drinks/day, ≥3 drinking days/week, or 1-3 drinks/week appeared to have a lower association with at-risk fibrosis when controlling for demographic/socioeconomic risk factors, the association was not present after controlling for lifestyle/dietary and metabolic risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: There is an association between exclusive liquor/cocktail consumption and at-risk liver fibrosis in patients with MASLD who report nonheavy alcohol consumption.

RESUMO

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a life-threatening condition with limited treatment options. The pathogenesis of ALI involves macrophage-mediated disruption and subsequent repair of the alveolar barriers, which ultimately results in lung damage and regeneration, highlighting the pivotal role of macrophage polarization in ALI. Although exosomes derived from mesenchymal stromal cells have been established as influential modulators of macrophage polarization, the specific role of exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) remains underexplored. This study aimed to elucidate the role of specific exosomal miRNAs in driving macrophage polarization, thereby providing a reference for developing novel therapeutic interventions for ALI. We found that miR-7704 is the most abundant and efficacious miRNA for promoting the switch to the M2 phenotype in macrophages. Mechanistically, we determined that miR-7704 stimulates M2 polarization by inhibiting the MyD88/STAT1 signaling pathway. Notably, intra-tracheal delivery of miR-7704 alone in a lipopolysaccharide-induced murine ALI model significantly drove M2 polarization in lung macrophages and remarkably restored pulmonary function, thus increasing survival. Our findings highlight miR-7704 as a valuable tool for treating ALI by driving the beneficial M2 polarization of macrophages. Our findings pave the way for deeper exploration into the therapeutic potential of exosomal miRNAs in inflammatory lung diseases.

RESUMO

The drug discovery of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) superfamily using computational models is often limited by the availability of protein three-dimensional (3D) structures and chemicals with experimentally measured bioactivities. Orphan GPCRs without known ligands further complicate the process. To enable drug discovery for human orphan GPCRs, multitask models were proposed for predicting half maximal effective concentrations (EC50) of the pairs of chemicals and GPCRs. Protein multiple sequence alignment features, and physicochemical properties and fingerprints of chemicals were utilized to encode the protein and chemical information, respectively. The protein features enabled the transfer of data-rich GPCRs to orphan receptors and the transferability based on the similarity of protein features. The final model was trained using both agonist and antagonist data from 200 GPCRs and showed an excellent mean squared error (MSE) of 0.24 in the validation dataset. An independent test using the orphan dataset consisting of 16 receptors associated with less than 8 bioactivities showed a reasonably good MSE of 1.51 that can be further improved to 0.53 by considering the transferability based on protein features. The informative features were identified and mapped to corresponding 3D structures to gain insights into the mechanism of GPCR-ligand interactions across the GPCR family. The proposed method provides a novel perspective on learning ligand bioactivity within the diverse human GPCR superfamily and can potentially accelerate the discovery of therapeutic agents for orphan GPCRs.

RESUMO

Photolyases, a ubiquitous class of flavoproteins, use blue light to repair DNA photolesions. In this work, we determined the structural mechanism of the photolyase-catalyzed repair of a cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) lesion using time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography (TR-SFX). We obtained 18 snapshots that show time-dependent changes in four reaction loci. We used these results to create a movie that depicts the repair of CPD lesions in the picosecond-to-nanosecond range, followed by the recovery of the enzymatic moieties involved in catalysis, completing the formation of the fully reduced enzyme-product complex at 500 nanoseconds. Finally, back-flip intermediates of the thymine bases to reanneal the DNA were captured at 25 to 200 microseconds. Our data cover the complete molecular mechanism of a photolyase and, importantly, its chemistry and enzymatic catalysis at work across a wide timescale and at atomic resolution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It is currently unclear whether the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) fibrosis score, when compared to major anthropometric indices, is useful in estimating the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included 3886 adults undergoing a health checkup. An elevated risk of ASCVD was determined as a 10-year ASCVD risk ≥7.5% using Pooled Cohort Equations. NAFLD was diagnosed with abdominal ultrasonography. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the performance of estimating an elevated ASCVD risk. Among study participants, 521 (13.4%) had an elevated ASCVD risk and 1473 (37.9%) had NAFLD. Subjects with NAFLD had a significantly higher rate of ASCVD risk ≥7.5% (p < 0.001) compared to those without NAFLD. After adjusting for cardiometabolic risk factors, NAFLD (OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.10-2.00, p = 0.009) in all participants and NAFLD fibrosis score >0.676 (OR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.30-2.92, p = 0.001) in individuals with NAFLD were significantly associated with an elevated risk of ASCVD. When compared to different anthropometric indices, NAFLD fibrosis score exhibited the largest area under the curve (AUC) in individuals with NAFLD (AUC = 0.750) in estimating an elevated ASCVD risk. Furthermore, NAFLD fibrosis score displayed the best predictive performance for identifying an elevated ASCVD risk in male participants with NAFLD (AUC = 0.737). CONCLUSION: NAFLD was a significant risk factor for elevated ASCVD risk. NAFLD fibrosis score >0.676 was associated with increased ASCVD risk in individuals with NAFLD. Compared with anthropometric indices, NAFLD fibrosis score demonstrated the best performance in estimating elevated ASCVD risk among those with NAFLD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AIMS: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are recognized as a potential cell-based therapy for regenerative medicine. Short-term inflammatory cytokine pre-stimulation (cytokine priming) is a promising approach to enhance regenerative efficacy of MSCs. However, it is unclear whether their intrinsic heterogenic nature causes an unequal response to cytokine priming, which might blunt the accessibility of clinical applications. METHODS: In this study, by analyzing the single-cell transcriptomic landscape of human bone marrow MSCs from a naïve to cytokine-primed state, we elucidated the potential mechanism of superior therapeutic potential in cytokine-primed MSCs. RESULTS: We found that cytokine-primed MSCs had a distinct transcriptome landscape. Although substantial heterogeneity was identified within the population in both naïve and primed states, cytokine priming enhanced the several characteristics of MSCs associated with therapeutic efficacy irrespective of heterogeneity. After cytokine-priming, all sub-clusters of MSCs possessed high levels of immunoregulatory molecules, trophic factors, stemness-related genes, anti-apoptosis markers and low levels of multi-lineage and senescence signatures, which are critical for their therapeutic potency. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, our results provide new insights into MSC heterogeneity under cytokine stimulation and suggest that cytokine priming reprogrammed MSCs independent of heterogeneity.

RESUMO

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are fast becoming the most common chronic liver disease and are often preventable with healthy dietary habits and weight management. Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is associated with obesity and NAFLD. However, the impact of different types of SSBs, including artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs), is not clear after controlling for total sugar intake and total caloric intake. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the consumption of different SSBs and the risk of NAFLD and NASH in US adults. The representativeness of 3739 US adults aged ≥20 years old who had completed 24 h dietary recall interviews and measurements, including dietary, SSBs, smoking, physical activity, and liver stiffness measurements, were selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2020 surveys. Chi-square tests, t-tests, and weighted logistic regression models were utilized for analyses. The prevalence of NASH was 20.5%, and that of NAFLD (defined without NASH) was 32.7% of US. adults. We observed a higher prevalence of NASH/NAFLD in men, Mexican-Americans, individuals with sugar intake from SSBs, light-moderate alcohol use, lower physical activity levels, higher energy intake, obesity, and medical comorbidities. Heavy sugar consumption through SSBs was significantly associated with NAFLD (aOR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.05-2.45). In addition, the intake of ASBs only (compared to the non-SSB category) was significantly associated with NAFLD (aOR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.04-3.05), after adjusting for demographic, risk behaviors, and body mass index. A higher sugar intake from SSBs and exclusive ASB intake are both associated with the risk of NAFLD.

RESUMO

Body mass index (BMI) as well as sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) has been suggested to independently decrease 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). However, the relationship between SSB, BMI, and 25(OH)D is uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the potential mediating role of BMI in the association between SSB intake and 25(OH)D. A total of 4505 representative U.S. adults aged above 20 years and without liver conditions were selected from the 2013-2014 NHANES. All analyses were performed under survey modules with appropriate sampling weights. The prevalence of 25(OH)D insufficiency and deficiency was 37.8% and 24.1% in U.S. adults, respectively. Compared with non-SSB consumers, an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency was found in either heavy SSB consumers or soda consumers, respectively (aOR = 2.10, 95% CI = 1.25-3.54 in heavy SSB consumers; aOR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.06-2.44 in soda consumers). Around 21.3% of the total effect of sugar intake from SSB on decreased 25(OH)D was explained by BMI. In conclusion, high total sugar intake from SSB and BMI independently contribute to lower 25(OH)D, and BMI mediates the inverse association between total sugar intake from SSB intake and 25(OH)D. Furthermore, an increased risk of having vitamin D deficiency was found in the population who consumed higher levels of sugar from SSB or soda drinks.

RESUMO

Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) has attracted great interest in recent years due to its ability to produce intricate parts beyond the capabilities of traditional manufacturing processes. L-PBF processed biomedical implants are usually made of commercial pure titanium (CP-Ti) or its alloys. However, both alloys are naturally bio-inert, and thus reduce the formation of apatite as implants are put into the human body. Accordingly, in an attempt to improve the bioactivity of the materials used for making orthopedic implants, the present study decomposed fluorapatite material (FA, (Ca10(PO4)6F2)) into the form of nano-powder and mixed this powder with CP-Ti powder in two different ratios (99%Ti + 1%FA (Ti-1%FA) and 98%Ti + 2%FA (Ti-2%FA)) to form powder material for the L-PBF process. Experimental trials were conducted to establish the optimal processing conditions (i.e., laser power, scanning speed and hatching space) of the L-PBF process for the two powder mixtures and the original CP-Ti powder with no FA addition. The optimal parameters were then used to produce tensile test specimens in order to evaluate the mechanical properties of the different samples. The hardness of the various samples was also examined by micro-Vickers hardness tests. The tensile strength of the Ti-1%FA sample (850 MPa) was found to be far higher than that of the CP-Ti sample (513 MPa). Furthermore, the yield strength of the Ti-1%FA sample (785 MPa) was also much higher than that of the CP-Ti sample (472 MPa). However, the elongation of the Ti-1%FA sample (6.27 %) was significantly lower than that of the CP-Ti sample (16.17%). Finally, the hardness values of the Ti-1%FA and Ti-2%FA samples were around 63.8% and 109.4%, respectively, higher than that of the CP-Ti sample.

RESUMO

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has been a critical morbidity in preterm infants. To improve our definition and prediction of BPD is challenging yet indispensable. We aimed to apply machine learning (ML) to investigate effective models by using the recently-proposed and data-driven definition to predict late respiratory support modalities at 36 weeks' post menstrual age (PMA). We collected data on very-low-birth-weight infants born between 2016 and 2019 from the Taiwan Neonatal Network database. Twenty-four attributes associated with their early life and seven ML algorithms were used in our analysis. The target outcomes were overall mortality, death before 36 weeks' PMA, and severity of BPD under the new definition, which served as a proxy for respiratory support modalities. Of the 4103 infants initially considered, 3200 were deemed eligible. The logistic regression algorithm yielded the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). After attribute selection, the AUROC of the simplified models remain favorable (e.g., 0.801 when predicting no BPD, 0.850 when predicting grade 3 BPD or death before 36 weeks' PMA, and 0.881 when predicting overall mortality). By using ML, we developed models to predict late respiratory support. Estimators were developed for clinical application after being simplified through attribute selection.

RESUMO

Telerehabilitation is becoming increasingly valuable as a method for expanding medical services. The smartphone-based mHealth platform (SMPT) has been developed to provide high-quality remote rehabilitation through a smartphone and inertial measurement units. The SMPT uses smartphone as a main platform with connection to medical backend server to provide telerehabilitation. Patients would be referred to therapists to receive a tutorial of exercise technique prior to conducting their home exercise. Once patients begin their home exercises, they can report any problems instantly through the SMPT. The medical staff can adjust the exercise program according to patient feedback and the data collected by the SMPT. After completing the exercise program, patients visit their clinician for re-evaluation. A Service User Technology Acceptability Questionnaire from both medical professional and public perspective revealed a high level of agreement on enhanced care, increased accessibility, and satisfaction and a moderate level of agreement on the use of this platform as a substitute for traditional rehabilitation. Concerns about privacy and discomfort were low in the medical professional and public groups. Concerns about care personnel were also significantly different between the two groups. The SMPT is a promising system for providing telerehabilitation as an adjunct to traditional rehabilitation, which may result in improved outcomes compared with those achieved when using traditional rehabilitation alone.

RESUMO

Sarcopenia is an age-related progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength disease. In addition, sarcopenia is tightly correlated with age-associated pathologies, such as sarcopenic obesity and osteoporosis. Further understanding of disease mechanisms and the therapeutic strategies in muscle regeneration requires a deeper knowledge of the interaction of skeletal muscle and other cells in the muscle tissue. Skeletal muscle regeneration is a complex process that requires a series of highly coordinated events involving communication between muscle stem cells and niche cells, such as muscle fibro/adipogenic progenitors and macrophages. Macrophages play a critical role in tissue regeneration and the maintenance of muscle homeostasis by producing growth factors and cytokines that regulate muscle stem cells and myofibroblast activation. Furthermore, the aging-related immune dysregulation associated with the release of trophic factors and the polarization in macrophages transiently affect the inflammatory phase and impair muscle regeneration. In this review, we focus on the role and regulation of macrophages in skeletal muscle regeneration and homeostasis. The aim of this review is to highlight the important roles of macrophages as a therapeutic target in age-related sarcopenia and the increasing understanding of how macrophages are regulated will help to advance skeletal muscle regeneration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to compare the number of cases of non-airborne/droplet-transmitted notifiable infectious disease (NID) before and after COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This study used an open database - National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System to collect the epidemiological data of NIDs. Ten fecal-oral-, six vector-borne-, four direct-contact, and four sexually-transmitted NIDs between pandemic period (defined as from January 2020 to December 2021) and the pre-pandemic period (defined as the period from January 2018 to December 2019) were included for the analysis. RESULTS: Overall, the annual case number of these 24 non-airborne/droplet-transmitted NIDs was 19,186, 19,101, 19,567, and 19,863 in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, respectively. The overall case number in the pandemic period was higher than those in pre-pandemic period (39,430 vs 38,287) and the monthly case number was significantly higher in pandemic period than pre-pandemic period (1643 vs 1595, p < 0.05). However, the lower case number in the pandemic period than those in pre-pandemic period was observed in overall ten fecal-oral-transmitted NIDs (1278 vs 1775), six vector-borne-NIDs (922 vs 2210), and four direct-contact transmitted NIDs (196 vs 344). In contrast, the case number of sexually-transmitted NIDs in the pandemic period was higher than those in pre-pandemic period (37,034 vs 33,958), particularly for gonorrhea (14,463 vs 8732). CONCLUSIONS: Most of the fecal-oral-, vector-borne, and direct-contact transmitted NIDs had declined during pandemic in Taiwan. In contrast, gonorrhea had large increase, and other NPIs were needed.
