RESUMO

Seahorses have important edible and medicinal values including strengthening the body, tonifying the liver and kidneys, and reducing swelling. And there are abundant seahorse species on Earth. Many seahorses have large price differences due to the scarcity of resources, and some seahorses with similar appearances appear to be confused for use. While in market trading, Hippocampus is susceptible to loss of specialized morphology characteristics, making it difficult to distinguish between specific species. Here we report an effective method based on peptide biomarkers for the identification of seahorse species. Peptide biomarkers for each species were predicted using nano-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (Nano-LC-MS/MS) combined with chemometrics software. One unique biomarker peptide for each species was synthesized and verified, and finally developed a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) multiple reaction monitoring method. The results indicate that the method has great potential for species-specific identification of seahorses and their preparations, among others.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the patterns and correlates of insight among patients with schizophrenia in a large Chinese population. METHOD: A multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted in Guangdong province, China. Patients with schizophrenia were included. Basic socio-demographic and clinical characteristics were collected in this study. Univariate analyses, multivariate logistic regression, and network analysis were conducted. RESULTS: A total of 6090 participants (58.8% were male, and 41.2% were female) met the study criteria and completed all the assessments. 63.5% (n = 3869) patients with schizophrenia had impaired insight. Fewer drug sides effect, higher psychological and environment domains scores in quality of life have a positive significant impact on insight in patients with schizophrenia. Younger age, higher BPRS scores have a negative significant impact on insight in patients with schizophrenia. The node ITAQ 8 (strength=1.17) was the most central node within the ITAQ network, while node ITAQ 3 was the least central node (strength=0.69). The edge ITAQ 1-ITAQ 2 was the thickest and most saturated edge in network model. CONCLUSIONS: Considering patterns and correlation of insight, it is necessary to ensure adherence to medications and engagement with mental health services for patients with schizophrenia, which could also improve their quality of life. Taking medication actively is more central to identify ITAQ and might be the potential targets for future interventions.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric features of the Chinese version of the developmental dimensional diagnostic interview-short version (3Di-sv). A total sample of 138 children including 79 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 59 typically developing children completed the 3Di-sv interview. The Chinese version of the 3Di-sv has a good internal consistency (0.94). Test-retest analysis confirmed the instrument's time stability (0.89). The instrument's concurrent validity with the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and clinical diagnosis was verified; the correlation between total scores was 0.72, 0.82 and 0.90, respectively. The 3Di-sv significantly distinguished between autistic children and non-autistic children in every area of autism symptoms. Optimal cutoffs were derived using receiver operating characteristics curves. Using clinical diagnosis as criterion, overall sensitivity was 98 % and specificity was 90 %. The study determined that the Chinese version of 3Di-sv can well distinguish autistic children from typically developing children.

RESUMO

Deer horn gelatin (DHG) is a valuable nutritional dietary supplement. Due to the significant variation in the price of DHG from different sources, it is important to assess its quality and to clarify the species of its raw material. However, due to the similarity in appearance and physicochemical properties, as well as the destruction of genetic material during the manufacturing process, it is difficult to distinguish DHG from gelatin derived from other sources. Furthermore, current methods are unable to evaluate the overall quality of DHG. Using Nano LC-Orbitrap MS and data analysis software, DHG samples from five deer species were analyzed to identify peptide markers specific to alpha-2-HS-glycoprotein (AHSG) and collagen. The peptide markers were validated using HPLC-Triple Quadrupole MS, and strategies for assessing the quality of DHG were developed. Eighteen peptide markers were discovered, comprising peptides with differing specificities. Three strategies for the identification, characteristic mapping, and content determination of DHG were developed. These strategies can be used to assess the quality of deer gelatin.

RESUMO

Naringenin (5,7,4'-trihydroxyflavanone), belonging to the flavanone subclass, is associated with beneficial effects such as anti-oxidation, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic effects. Drug metabolism plays an essential role in drug discovery and clinical safety. However, due to the interference of numerous endogenous substances in metabolic samples, the identification and efficient characterization of drug metabolites are difficult. Here, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to obtain mass spectral information of plasma (processed by three methods), urine, feces, liver tissue, and liver microsome samples. Moreover, a novel analytical strategy named "ion induction and deduction" was proposed to systematically screen and identify naringenin metabolites in vivo and in vitro. The analysis strategy was accomplished by the establishment of multiple "net-hubs" and the induction and deduction of fragmentation behavior. Finally, 78 naringenin metabolites were detected and identified from samples of rat plasma, urine, feces, liver tissue, and liver microsomes, of which 67 were detected in vivo and 13 were detected in vitro. Naringenin primarily underwent glucuronidation, sulfation, oxidation, methylation, ring fission, and conversion into phenolic acid and their composite reactions. The current study provides significant help in extracting target information from complex samples and sets the foundation for other pharmacology and toxicology research.

RESUMO

Deer antler is a globally widely used precious natural medicine and the material of deer horn gelatin. However, identification of deer antler species based on traditional approaches are problematic because of their similarity in appearance and physical-chemical properties. In this study, we performed a comprehensive antler peptidome analysis using a label-free approach: nano LC-Orbitrap MS was applied to discover peptide biomarkers in deer adult beta-globin (HBBA), and HPLC-Triple Quadrupole MS was used to verify their specificity. Nineteen peptide biomarkers were found, on which foundation a strategy for antlers and a strategy for antler mixtures such as flakes or powder are provided to identify seven species of deer antler including Eurasian elk (Alces alces), reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus viginianus), white-lipped deer (Przewalskium albirostris), fallow deer (Dama dama), sika deer (Cervus nippon), and red deer (Cervus elaphus) simultaneously. It is worth noting that our search found that the HBBA gene of sika deer, red deer, and North American wapiti (Cervus canadensis) in China may have undergone severe genetic drifts.

RESUMO

Searching for new adjuvants of conventional chemotherapeutic approaches against colorectal cancer cells is extremely urgent. In current research, a non-targeted analytical approach was established by combining proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with a chemometrics data mining tool to identify chemosensitizing agents from Rauvolfia vomitoria. This approach enabled the identification of potential active constituents in the initial fractionation process and provided their structural information. This strategy was validated by its application to Rauvolfia vomitoria extract exhibiting chemosensitizing activity on 5-fluorouracil against colorectal cancer cells. After the workflow, the biochemometrics analysis showed that at least 15 signals (Variable influence on projection (VIP) > 1) could have contributions in the differentiation of various fractions. Through systematic literature and database searches, we found that the most active fraction (fraction 7) exhibited the highest presence of sabazin-type and armaniline-type alkaloids, which were potential chemosensitizers as previously reported. To validate the results of the strategy, the effect of 5-FU and compounds isolated from fraction seven incubation on HCT-8 and LoVo cell vialibilty were evaluated. These results evidenced that compound ß-carboline (3), 1-methyl-ß-carboline (4), and lochnerine (6) could enhance the cytotoxicity of 5-fluorouracil against to Colorectal cancer cells. Besides, 21 compounds including two new compounds were isolated from Rauvolfia vomitoria. The experimental results verify the reliability of the method, and this approach provides a new and efficient tool to overcome some of the bottlenecks in natural products drug discovery.

RESUMO

There are no published data on insight in homeless patients with psychiatric disorders in China. This study examined insight in homeless and non-homeless Chinese psychiatric inpatients in relation to demographic and clinical variables. A total of 278 homeless and 222 non-homeless inpatients matched in age and gender were included in the study. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected based on a review of medical charts and a clinical interview with standardized instruments. Insight was evaluated with the Insight and Treatment Attitudes Questionnaire. Altogether 20.5% of homeless inpatients and 43.7% of the non-homeless controls had good insight. Compared with homeless inpatients with impaired insight, homeless inpatients with good insight had higher physical quality of life, longer duration of illness and less severe positive and negative symptoms. Impaired insight appeared more common in homeless psychiatric inpatients in China. Further studies should address the need for effective therapeutic interventions that promote homeless patients' insight.

RESUMO

In China, maintenance treatment for clinically stable patients with schizophrenia is usually provided by primary care physicians. This study examined the quality of life (QOL) in patients with schizophrenia treated in primary care and explored the demographic and clinical characteristics associated with QOL. Altogether, 612 patients with schizophrenia treated in 22 randomly selected primary care services in China formed the study sample. QOL, psychotic and depressive symptoms, extra-pyramidal symptoms and insight were assessed using standardized instruments. Data analyses were conducted with the one sample t-test and multiple linear regression analyses. Compared with the normative data for the Chinese general population, significantly lower scores in physical and mental QOL domains were found in the patient group. Older age, being unemployed, major medical conditions, no smoking, more severe depressive and negative symptoms, more frequent insomnia, and suicidality were independently associated with poor physical QOL. Male gender, more severe depressive and anxiety symptoms, more frequent insomnia, and suicidality were independently associated with poor mental QOL. Patients with schizophrenia treated in primary care had lower level of QOL in comparison with general population. Effective measures need to be implemented to improve their QOL.

RESUMO

To date, there are no data on quality of life (QOL) and its correlates in homeless Chinese patients with psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to compare QOL between homeless and non-homeless patients with psychiatric disorders in China. A total of 278 homeless and 222 non-homeless patients matched in age and gender were consecutively recruited. Socio-demographic and clinical data were collected from medical records. A clinical interview was conducted using standardized instruments. The physical and mental QOL in both groups were lower than the normative data for Chinese general population, but there was no significant difference in any QOL domain between the two groups. Multivariate analyses of homeless patients revealed that male gender was associated with higher physical QOL, while living in cities and lower education level were associated with higher mental QOL. In non-homeless patients, use of second-generation antipsychotics was associated with lower physical QOL, while having more severe depressive symptoms was associated with lower mental QOL. Longitudinal studies are warranted to clarify the contributing factors of QOL in both homeless and non-homeless patients.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine the pattern of sleep behavior in schizophrenia patients treated in primary care. DESIGN AND METHODS: Altogether 623 schizophrenia patients in 22 primary care services were recruited. Sleep duration and demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded. FINDINGS: The mean expected total sleep time was 8.8 hr (SD 1.8) and the mean actual total sleep time was 8.2 hr (SD 2.1). The frequency of short, medium, and long sleepers was 18.1, 38.4, and 43.5%, respectively. Major medical conditions and any type of insomnia were independently associated with short sleep, while long sleep was associated with unemployment and use of second-generation antipsychotics. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: More attention should be paid to sleep duration in this population group.

RESUMO

This study described the prevalence and correlates of comorbid moderate-severe depressive symptoms (comorbid depression thereafter) and their association with quality of life (QOL) in schizophrenia patients treated in primary care. 623 schizophrenia patients were enrolled. Patients' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics including comorbid depression [defined as a total score of 18 or above on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS)] were recorded. Depressive symptoms (defined as a total score of 9 or above on the MADRS) were present in 54.1 % of patients, while 17.7 % had comorbid depression. Analysis of covariance revealed that comorbid depression was significantly associated with lower mental QOL. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that more severe positive and negative symptoms, anxiety symptoms, use of first-generation antipsychotics and antidepressants, were independently associated with comorbid depression. Given the negative association between comorbid depression and QOL, attempts to address comorbid depression in schizophrenia patients treated in primary care should be made.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Sexual dysfunction in schizophrenia patients is common. In China, maintenance treatment for clinically stable patients with schizophrenia is usually provided by primary care physicians. Illness- or treatment-related sexual dysfunction in this patient population has been never studied. This study describes the prevalence and correlates of sexual dysfunction and its impact on quality of life (QOL) in patients with schizophrenia treated in primary care in China. METHOD: A total of 607 patients with schizophrenia treated in 22 randomly selected primary care services in China formed the study sample. Patients' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics including sexual function and QOL were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection. RESULTS: Sexual dysfunction was present in 69.9% of all patients; 60.7% in males and 80.6% in females. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender, being single, older age and use of first-generation antipsychotics were independently and significantly associated with more sexual dysfunction accounting for 23.5% of its variance (P<0.001). Unexpectedly, sexual dysfunction was not associated with lower QOL. CONCLUSIONS: High rate of sexual dysfunction was reported in the majority of patients with schizophrenia treated in primary care in China. Given its negative impact on social adjustment, QOL and treatment adherence, efforts should be made to address sexual dysfunction in this patient population.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In China, maintenance treatment for clinically stable patients with schizophrenia is usually provided by primary care physicians, but their prescribing patterns have not been studied. This study examined the frequency as well as demographic and clinical correlates of antipsychotic polypharmacy (APP) and its impact on quality of life (QOL) in patients with schizophrenia treated in primary care in China. METHOD: A total of 623 community-dwelling patients from 18 randomly selected primary care services were interviewed. Patients' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, including number of hospitalizations, antipsychotic drug-induced side effects, and QOL were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. RESULTS: The rate of APP prescription was 31% (193/623). Of the patients on APP, 89.6% received 2 antipsychotics, 10.4% received 3 or more antipsychotics. Clozapine (35.6%) was the most commonly prescribed second generation antipsychotic (SGA), while perphenazine (17.8%) was the most commonly prescribed first generation antipsychotic (FGA). Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that patients on APP were more likely to receive SGAs and anticholinergics, had fewer hospitalizations, younger age of onset, and higher doses of antipsychotics. There were no significant differences between the two groups in any of the QOL domains. CONCLUSIONS: Approximately a third of Chinese patients with schizophrenia in primary care receive APP. Further examination of the rationale and appropriateness of APP and its alternatives is warranted.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Maintenance treatment for clinically stable patients with schizophrenia is usually provided by Chinese primary care physicians, but no study has investigated smoking rates in this population. This study investigated the rate of smoking and its associations with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and quality of life (QOL) in patients with schizophrenia treated in primary care in China. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, community-based survey. A total of 621 schizophrenia patients were recruited from 22 primary care services in Guangzhou, China, in 2013. Patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, smoking status, and QOL were recorded. RESULTS: The frequency of current smoking was 23.8% in the whole sample; 41.5% for men and 2.5% for women. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that male gender, married status, alcohol use, older age at onset, fewer major medical conditions, lower education level and more hospitalizations were independently associated with current smoking. CONCLUSION: The frequency of smoking in Chinese schizophrenia patients treated by primary care physicians is lower than most figures reported from Western and Chinese psychiatric settings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Developing accurate and time-efficient tools to measure depressive symptoms in schizophrenia is important for research and clinical practice. This study tested the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the 16-item Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS-SR) in depressed schizophrenia patients. METHODS: This study included 337 clinically stable patients with schizophrenia. The severity of depressive symptoms was assessed using the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), QIDS-SR at baseline and 2 weeks later. Negative symptoms and extrapyramidal symptoms were measured with the negative symptom score of Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and the Simpson-Angus Scale of Extrapyramidal Symptoms (SAS), respectively. RESULTS: Internal consistency (Cronbach׳s alpha) was 0.73 and 0.67 for QIDS-SR at the baseline and endpoint, respectively. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) for test-retest reliability over the two weeks was 0.77. Two domains (involvement and energy) at baseline and one domain (energy) at endpoint had the highest item-total correlations. The QIDS-SR total score was significantly correlated with the MADRS total score at baseline (r=0.44, p<0.01). Weak correlations of the QIDS-SR score with the scores of the BPRS negative (r=0.18) and the SAS (r=0.05) indicate good discriminant validity. The QIDS-SR showed unidimensional measurement properties in exploratory factor analysis at both baseline. The main limitation of the study is that only clinically stable schizophrenia patients were included. CONCLUSIONS: The QIDS-SR has acceptable psychometric properties in stable schizophrenia patients and may be useful in both research and clinical practice.

RESUMO

Solid complexes of lanthanide nitrates with an novel unsymmetrical tripodal ligand, butyl-N,N-bis[((2'-benzylaminofomyl)phenoxyl)ethyl]-amine (L) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra and molar conductivity measurements. At the same time, the luminescent properties of the Sm(III), Eu(III), Tb(III) and Dy(III) nitrate complexes in solid state were also investigated. Under the excitation of UV light, these complexes exhibited characteristic emission of central metal ions.
