RESUMO

In clinics, hepcidin levels are elevated in various anemia-related conditions, particularly in iron-refractory anemia and in high inflammatory states that suppress iron absorption, which remains an urgent unmet medical need. To identify effective treatment options for various types of iron-refractory anemia, the potential effect of hypoxia and pharmacologically-mimetic drug FG-4592 (Roxadustat) are evaluated, a hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-prolyl hydroxylase (PHD) inhibitor, on mouse models of iron-refractory iron-deficiency anemia (IRIDA), anemia of inflammation and 5-fluorouracil-induced chemotherapy-related anemia. The potent protective effects of both hypoxia and FG-4592 on IRIDA as well as other 2 tested mouse cohorts are found. Mechanistically, it is demonstrated that hypoxia or FG-4592 could stabilize duodenal Hif2α, leading to the activation of Fpn transcription regardless of hepcidin levels, which in turn results in increased intestinal iron absorption and the amelioration of hepcidin-activated anemias. Moreover, duodenal Hif2α overexpression fully rescues phenotypes of Tmprss6 knockout mice, and Hif2α knockout in the gut significantly delays the recovery from 5-fluorouracil-induced anemia, which can not be rescued by FG-4592 treatment. Taken together, the findings of this study provide compelling evidence that targeting intestinal hypoxia-related pathways can serve as a potential therapeutic strategy for treating a broad spectrum of anemia, especially iron refractory anemia.

RESUMO

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The introduction of polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) materials may provide more options for dentists in restoring short clinical crowns and extensively damaged posterior teeth, but clinical data for their performance are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to compare the 3-year performance and survival rates of PICN material with those of conservative ceramic onlay restorations for endodontically treated posterior teeth using the CEREC AC chair-side system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 101 onlay restorations of endodontically treated posterior teeth using the CEREC AC chair-side system were provided in 93 participants. The 101 teeth were divided into 2 groups: Vita Enamic group and Vitablocs Mark II group. Using the modified US Public Health Service quality evaluation system, 2 calibrated evaluators examined the performance of the onlay restorations over 3 years. The Kaplan-Meier method was adopted to analyze the survival rate of restorations (α=.05). The log rank test was used to compare the survival rates of the 2 groups. The Fisher exact test was performed to detect differences in the success rates for extensively damaged teeth and short clinical crown restorations between the 2 groups. The Silness and Löe gingival index was also recorded. RESULTS: The restoration survival rates in the 2 groups were 97.0% (Vita Enamic) and 90.7% (Vitablocs Mark II) (P>.05). Five failures were recorded (4.95%). These failures were caused by restoration debonding (60%), ceramic fractures (20%), and tooth fractures (20%). There were no significant differences between the success rates of restoring extensively damaged teeth and short clinical crowns between the 2 groups (P>.05). The periodontal condition of 25% of participants was improved 3 years after the onlay restorations. CONCLUSIONS: Onlay restorations of endodontically treated posterior teeth with Vita Enamic using the CEREC AC chair-side system are clinically promising prosthodontic alternatives, with a survival rate of 97.0% after 3 years. More research is needed to verify the results of this study.

RESUMO

The epitaxial structure design of low-temperature barriers has been adopted to promote strain relaxation in multiple quantum well (MQWs) and achieve high-efficient GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs). With these barriers, the relaxation value of wells increases from 0 to 4.59%. The strain-relaxed mechanism of low-temperature barriers is also discussed. The LED chip with the barriers grown at the TMIn flow of 75 sccm and the growth temperature of 830 °C has an optimal strain relaxation value of 1.53% in wells, and exhibits the largest light output power of 63.83 mW at the injection current of 65 mA, which is higher than that of conventional LED (51.89 mW) by 23%. In-depth studies reveal that the optimal low-temperature barriers remarkably promote the strain relaxation in wells without forming large density of crystalline defects. This achievement of high-efficiency LEDs sheds light on the future solid-state lighting applications.

RESUMO

GaN and related III-nitrides have attracted considerable attention as promising materials for application in optoelectronic devices, in particular, light-emitting diodes (LEDs). At present, sapphire is still the most popular commercial substrate for epitaxial growth of GaN-based LEDs. However, due to its relatively large lattice mismatch with GaN and low thermal conductivity, sapphire is not the most ideal substrate for GaN-based LEDs. Therefore, in order to obtain high-performance and high-power LEDs with relatively low cost, unconventional substrates, which are of low lattice mismatch with GaN, high thermal conductivity and low cost, have been tried as substitutes for sapphire. As a matter of fact, it is not easy to obtain high-quality III-nitride films on those substrates for various reasons. However, by developing a variety of techniques, distincts progress has been made during the past decade, with high-performance LEDs being successfully achieved on these unconventional substrates. This review focuses on state-of-the-art high-performance GaN-based LED materials and devices on unconventional substrates. The issues involved in the growth of GaN-based LED structures on each type of unconventional substrate are outlined, and the fundamental physics behind these issues is detailed. The corresponding solutions for III-nitride growth, defect control, and chip processing for each type of unconventional substrate are discussed in depth, together with a brief introduction to some newly developed techniques in order to realize LED structures on unconventional substrates. This is very useful for understanding the progress in this field of physics. In this review, we also speculate on the prospects for LEDs on unconventional substrates.

RESUMO

This paper presents a design of a high performance and low power consumption triple-track magnetic sensor chip which was fabricated in TSMC 0.35 µm CMOS process. This chip is able to simultaneously sense, decode and read out the information stored in triple-track magnetic cards. A reference voltage generating circuit, a low-cost filter circuit, a power-on reset circuit, an RC oscillator, and a pre-decoding circuit are utilized as the basic modules. The triple-track magnetic sensor chip has four states, i.e., reset, sleep, swiping card and data read-out. In sleep state, the internal RC oscillator is closed, which means that the digital part does not operate to optimize energy consumption. In order to improve decoding accuracy and expand the sensing range of the signal, two kinds of circuit are put forward, naming offset correction circuit, and tracking circuit. With these two circuits, the sensing function of this chip can be more efficiently and accurately. We simulated these circuit modules with TSMC technology library. The results showed that these modules worked well within wide range input signal. Based on these results, the layout and tape-out were carried out. The measurement results showed that the chip do function well within a wide swipe speed range, which achieved the design target.

RESUMO

Smart sensors are emerging as a promising technology for a large number of application domains. This paper presents a collection of requirements and guidelines that serve as a basis for a general smart sensor architecture to monitor electricity meters. It also presents an electricity meter monitoring network, named EMMNet, comprised of data collectors, data concentrators, hand-held devices, a centralized server, and clients. EMMNet provides long-distance communication capabilities, which make it suitable suitable for complex urban environments. In addition, the operational cost of EMMNet is low, compared with other existing remote meter monitoring systems based on GPRS. A new dynamic tree protocol based on the application requirements which can significantly improve the reliability of the network is also proposed. We are currently conducting tests on five networks and investigating network problems for further improvements. Evaluation results indicate that EMMNet enhances the efficiency and accuracy in the reading, recording, and calibration of electricity meters.
