RESUMO

Some active asteroids have been proposed to be formed as a result of impact events1. Because active asteroids are generally discovered by chance only after their tails have fully formed, the process of how impact ejecta evolve into a tail has, to our knowledge, not been directly observed. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission of NASA2, in addition to having successfully changed the orbital period of Dimorphos3, demonstrated the activation process of an asteroid resulting from an impact under precisely known conditions. Here we report the observations of the DART impact ejecta with the Hubble Space Telescope from impact time T + 15 min to T + 18.5 days at spatial resolutions of around 2.1 km per pixel. Our observations reveal the complex evolution of the ejecta, which are first dominated by the gravitational interaction between the Didymos binary system and the ejected dust and subsequently by solar radiation pressure. The lowest-speed ejecta dispersed through a sustained tail that had a consistent morphology with previously observed asteroid tails thought to be produced by an impact4,5. The evolution of the ejecta after the controlled impact experiment of DART thus provides a framework for understanding the fundamental mechanisms that act on asteroids disrupted by a natural impact1,6.

RESUMO

Diabetes-induced retinal neurodegeneration occurs before visible microvascular abnormalities. Hyperglycemia-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress (ERS) and oxidative stress(OS) were considered as the important factors during diabetic retinopathy development. Liraglutide (LIRA), a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue, is widely used in the clinic and also proved having protective effect on neurodegenerative diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of LIRA on diabetes-induced retinal neurodegeneration and underlying mechanisms. In vivo, a high-fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ) injection were used inducing diabetes model. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used for morphological observation and measuring retinal thickness. In vitro, Neuro2a cells were cultured in normal and high-glucose conditions. Flow cytometry was performed to analyze apoptosis. Additionally, Western blotting and Immunohistochemistry were carried out to detect proteins expression. The retinal thickness was decreased in diabetes. However, the retinal thickness reducing was delay after LIRA treatment in diabetes. In vitro, the apoptosis percentage, ROS production and the expression of ERS related protein GRP78, ASK1, p-IRE1α was increased and the expression of Nrf2, p-Erk1/2, Trx was decreased after HG treatment, However, the apoptosis percentage, generation of ROS and the expression of GRP78, ASK1, p-IRE1 were decreased. The expression of Nrf2, p-Erk1/2, Trx was increased significantly after LIRA treatment. Taken together, our results indicated that LIRA can alleviates diabetes-induced retinal neurodegeneration which activated Erk pathway inhibiting OS and regulated the Trx-ASK1complex inhibiting ERS.

RESUMO

In the proposed study, an efficient method for a carbon dot@ß-cyclodextrin (C-dot@ß-CD)-based fluorescent probe was developed for the analyses of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) at trace levels in water samples. The properties of C-dot@ß-CD nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sensing behaviors of C-dot@ß-CD toward CC and HQ were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. Based on the host-guest chemistry between C-dot@ß-CD and phenolic compounds, which can quench C-dot@ß-CD fluorescence, the prepared C-dot@ß-CD nanocomposites could be used for the sensitive and selective detection of CC or HQ across a wide linear range (0.1 to 10 µM) with detection limits of 47.9 and 20.2 nM, respectively. These results showed that the synthesized C-dot@ß-CD nanocomposite exhibited strong fluorescence and high degree of water solubility and thus, it is suitable for use as a nanoprobe for detecting CC or HQ in real water samples.

RESUMO

Youcha is a novel tea drink from the northeast of Guangxi. This study aimed to investigate the hypolipidemic properties of Youcha in high-fat induced hyperlipidemic Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. After designing the model, rats were randomly divided into six groups (n = 10): normal diet (NMD) group, high-fat diet (HFD) group, Xuezhikang (120 mg kg-1 d-1) (HFD+P) group and Youcha (150, 750 or 1500 mg kg-1 d-1) (HFD+L, HFD+M or HFD+H) groups. Youcha comprises tea polyphenols (1.51 g per 100 g), caffeine (34.80 mg per 100 g) and other functional compounds. To evaluate the lipid-lowering effects of Youcha, weight of the body, liver and fat, fat index, lipid metabolism, antioxidant properties and liver damage indices were examined. In addition, the activities of some enzymes in serum and liver tissue were examined to preliminarily study their possible mechanism. The results reveal that Youcha tends to reduce body weight, liver weight, fat index, total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) contents, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), atherogenic index (AI), malondialdehyde (MDA), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) relative to the HFD group. The hypolipidemic effect was partly due to the regulation of fatty acid synthetase (FAS) and lipase (LPS) rather than lipoprotein lipase (LPL) to decrease TG markedly. These findings suggest that Youcha could be potentially used to remedy hyperlipidemia and is hence worthy of promotion as a tea drink.

RESUMO

A novel method for the detection of dimethoate based on the peroxidase-like activity of silver-nanoparticles-modified oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (AgNPs/oxMWCNTs) has been developed. The synthesized AgNPs/oxMWCNTs showed excellent peroxidease-like catalytic activity in hydrogen peroxide-Amplex red (AR) system (AR is oxidized to resorufinat, with the resorufin fluorescence at 584nm being used to monitor the catalytic activity). After dimethoate was added to AgNPs/oxMWCNTs, the interaction between dimethoate and the AgNPs inhibited the catalytic activity of AgNPs/oxMWCNTs. The decrease in fluorescence was used for the detection of dimethoate in the range of 0.01-0.35µgmL-1 (R2=0.998) with a detection limit of 0.003µgmL-1 (signal/noise=3). This method exhibited good selectivity for the detection of dimethoate even in the presence of high concentration of other pesticides. Consequently, the method was applied to measure the concentration of dimethoate residue in lake water and fruit, thus obtaining satisfactory results.

RESUMO

The factors shaping cometary nuclei are still largely unknown, but could be the result of concurrent effects of evolutionary and primordial processes. The peculiar bilobed shape of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko may be the result of the fusion of two objects that were once separate or the result of a localized excavation by outgassing at the interface between the two lobes. Here we report that the comet's major lobe is enveloped by a nearly continuous set of strata, up to 650 metres thick, which are independent of an analogous stratified envelope on the minor lobe. Gravity vectors computed for the two lobes separately are closer to perpendicular to the strata than those calculated for the entire nucleus and adjacent to the neck separating the two lobes. Therefore comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is an accreted body of two distinct objects with 'onion-like' stratification, which formed before they merged. We conclude that gentle, low-velocity collisions occurred between two fully formed kilometre-sized cometesimals in the early stages of the Solar System. The notable structural similarities between the two lobes of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko indicate that the early-forming cometesimals experienced similar primordial stratified accretion, even though they formed independently.

RESUMO

Pits have been observed on many cometary nuclei mapped by spacecraft. It has been argued that cometary pits are a signature of endogenic activity, rather than impact craters such as those on planetary and asteroid surfaces. Impact experiments and models cannot reproduce the shapes of most of the observed cometary pits, and the predicted collision rates imply that few of the pits are related to impacts. Alternative mechanisms like explosive activity have been suggested, but the driving process remains unknown. Here we report that pits on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko are active, and probably created by a sinkhole process, possibly accompanied by outbursts. We argue that after formation, pits expand slowly in diameter, owing to sublimation-driven retreat of the walls. Therefore, pits characterize how eroded the surface is: a fresh cometary surface will have a ragged structure with many pits, while an evolved surface will look smoother. The size and spatial distribution of pits imply that large heterogeneities exist in the physical, structural or compositional properties of the first few hundred metres below the current nucleus surface.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture carries the potential risk of transmission of pathogenic microorganisms from the environment to the patient, and from one patient to another. An outbreak of tuberculosis at a private clinic in eastern China was investigated to identify the source of infection, mode of transmission, and risk factors for infection. METHODS: A probable case was one who had the onset of unexplained pain, swelling, or abscess in the area of invasive treatment between January 1, 2011 and February 23, 2012. A confirmed case was a probable case with positive laboratory test results for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Patient history and the frequency of invasive treatment were compared between 56 probable and confirmed cases and 98 controls in a case-control study. RESULTS: Fifty-six of 2561 patients (2.2%) who had visited the clinic developed tuberculosis. The odds ratio (OR) of M. tuberculosis infection increased with the frequency of clinic visits (Chi-square for trend=28.943, p=0.000). Multivariate analysis showed that the frequency of acupuncture (Chi-square=24.258, adjusted p-value=0.000) and sharing acupuncture needles (Chi-square=8.936, adjusted p-value=0.003) were risk factors for M. tuberculosis infection. Thirty-two pus sample and nine sputum sample cultures were M. tuberculosis-positive. CONCLUSIONS: This outbreak was caused by acupuncture and was transmitted through sharing acupuncture needles contaminated with M. tuberculosis.
