RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In this article, the influence of occupational stigma on workplace well-being of platform-based food-delivery workers is examined. The mediation effect of work-contingent self-esteem and the moderating effect of job control are also assessed. METHODS: Questionnaire data from 362 platform-based food-delivery workers were gathered at three time points, and multiple regression analyses were used to test each hypothesis. RESULTS: Occupational stigma reduces workplace well-being of platform-based food-delivery workers, and this relationship is mediated by work-contingent self-esteem. Job control exerts a negative moderating effect on the relationship between occupational stigma and platform-based food-delivery workers' work-contingent self-esteem. CONCLUSIONS: Strategies for reducing occupational stigma should be prioritized to increase workplace well-being in gig workers. Giving them more control over their work will likely alleviate the detrimental effect of occupational stigma on work-contingent self-esteem.

RESUMO

In this investigation, the combinations of exogenous pretreatment (melatonin or vitamin C) and contact ultrasound-assisted air drying were utilized to dry broccoli florets. To understand the influences of the studied dehydration methods on the conversion of glucoraphanin to bioactive sulforaphane in broccoli, various components (like glucoraphanin, sulforaphane, myrosinase, etc.) and factors (temperature and moisture) involved in the metabolism pathway were analyzed. The results showed that compared with direct air drying, the sequential exogenous pretreatment and contact ultrasound drying shortened the drying time by 19.0-22.7%. Meanwhile, contact sonication could promote the degradation of glucoraphanin. Both melatonin pretreatment and vitamin C pretreatment showed protective effects on the sulforaphane content and myrosinase activity during the subsequent drying process. At the end of drying, the sulforaphane content in samples dehydrated by the sequential melatonin (or vitamin C) pretreatment and ultrasound-intensified drying was 14.4% (or 26.5%) higher than only air-dried samples. The correlation analysis revealed that the exogenous pretreatment or ultrasound could affect the enzymatic degradation of glucoraphanin and the generation of sulforaphane through weakening the connections of sulforaphane-myrosinase, sulforaphane-VC, and VC-myrosinase. Overall, the reported results can enrich the biochemistry knowledge about the transformation of glucoraphanin to sulforaphane in cruciferous vegetables during drying, and the combined VC/melatonin pretreatment and ultrasound drying is conducive to protect bioactive sulforaphane in dehydrated broccoli.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to explore the influence of leader mindfulness on hindrance stress in nurses. Based on the social mindfulness framework, the mediating effects of nurses' perceptions of their leaders' perspective taking and empathic concern and how they are moderated by mindfulness of nurses were investigated. DESIGN: A time-lagged cross-sectional survey was conducted. METHODS: The convenience sampling method was adopted. Data were collected at three time points from January to September 2020. A total of 393 paired datasets of nurses and their leaders were collected from 28 Chinese 3A grade hospitals. SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 were used for data analysis and hypotheses testing. RESULTS: (1) Leader mindfulness significantly reduced nurse hindrance stress. (2) Both nurses' perceptions of their leaders' perspective taking and empathic concern mediated the relationship between leader mindfulness and nurse hindrance stress. Empathic concern was more effective than perspective taking in the process of leader mindfulness for reducing nurse hindrance stress. Nurses' perceptions of their leaders' perspective taking completely mediated the relationship between empathic concern and nurse hindrance stress. (3) Nurse mindfulness moderated the relationship between leader mindfulness and nurses' perceptions of their leaders' empathic concern but had no significant effect on the relationship between leader mindfulness and nurses' perceptions of their leaders' perspective taking. CONCLUSION: Leader mindfulness was an important interpersonal factor for reducing nurse hindrance stress. Nurses' perceptions of their leaders' perspective taking and empathic concern were pivotal mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of leader mindfulness. Nurse mindfulness is a situational factor that contributes to the effectiveness of leader mindfulness. IMPACT: Hospitals can benefit from mindfulness interventions by improving the mindfulness of leaders and nurses. Nurse managers are encouraged to promote social mindfulness, which will enable perspective taking and empathic concern by nurses and thus reduce hindrance stress on nurses during the pandemic.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The main purpose was to determine basic epidemiological data on CKD among hospitalized pediatric patients in China. METHODS: Data from pediatric inpatients with CKD hospitalized from June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2017 were extracted from the electronic records of HQMS database, which includes over 14 million inpatients. Codes from the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) were used to search the database. RESULTS: A total of 524 primary diseases of CKD were included in this study. In all, there were 278 231 pediatric inpatients with CKD, which accounted for 1.95 % of the 14 250 594 pediatric inpatients registered in the HQMS database. The number of pediatric inpatients with CKD was 67 498 in 2013, 76 810 in 2014, 81 665 in 2015 and 82 649 in 2016, which accounted for 1.93 %, 1.93 %, 1.99 and 2.09 %, respectively, of the total population of pediatric inpatients. The etiology of CKD was secondary nephrosis in 37.95 % of cases, which ranked first and followed by CAKUT with a percentage of 24.61 %. Glomerular diseases and cystic kidney disease accounted for 21.18 and 5.07 %, respectively. Among all 278 231 patients, 6 581 (2.37 %) had a primary discharge diagnosis of CKD. The renal pathology findings of CKD showed that IgA accounted for 51.17 %. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a descriptive analysis of the hospitalized population of pediatric CKD patients. Our study provides important, fundamental data for policy making and legislation, registry implementation and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of CKD in China.

RESUMO

This study combined conservation of resources theory with the job demands-resources model to explore the influence of leader mindfulness on the emotional exhaustion of university teachers Using a time-lagged research design, 388 paired data sets were gathered. Multiple regression and bootstrapping were used to test each hypothesis. The results showed that first, leader mindfulness significantly reduces the emotional exhaustion of university teachers. Second, the results showed that workplace telepressure partially mediates the relationship between leader mindfulness and the emotional exhaustion of university teachers. Third, university teacher mindfulness positively moderates the relationship between leader mindfulness and workplace telepressure. Finally, the results of this study indicate that self-efficacy in managing negative emotions negatively moderates the relationship between workplace telepressure and the emotional exhaustion of university teachers. This study empirically examined the interpersonal influence of leader mindfulness and the initial resources effect of university teacher mindfulness and self-efficacy in managing negative emotions from the bilateral perspective of leaders and university teachers.

RESUMO

AIM: This study explores the influence of team mindfulness on nurses' presenteeism. The mediation effect of perceived empathic concern and perceived insider status and the moderating effect of organisational formalization are assessed. BACKGROUND: Nurses are prone to presenteeism. Few studies have explored the influence of the organisational environment on nurses' presenteeism. Studies that consider organisational, work-related and person-related factors on the decision-making process influencing nurses' presenteeism are scarce. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey, data from 396 nurses were gathered from three time points and multiple regression analyses were used to test each hypothesis. RESULTS: (a) Team mindfulness reduces nurses' presenteeism. (b) Both perceived empathic concern and perceived insider status mediate the relationship between team mindfulness and nurses' presenteeism. (c) Organisational formalization exerts a positive moderating effect on the relationship between team mindfulness and perceived empathic concern. CONCLUSIONS: Team mindfulness reduces nurses' presenteeism through affective (perceived empathic concern) and cognitive (perceived insider status) sensemaking paths. Organisational formalization is a situational factor to improve the effectiveness of team mindfulness. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Nurse managers need to devote themselves to cultivating team mindfulness, building an atmosphere to promote perceived empathic concern and perceived insider status, and promoting a formal organisational structure.

RESUMO

Because of heavy workloads, non-transferable responsibilities, and shift systems, healthcare staff are prone to ill-health presenteeism. Based on social information processing theory, this study explored the influence of the psychosocial safety climate (PSC) on ill-health presenteeism. The mediating effects of perceived instrumental support and perceived emotional support and the moderating effect of organic structure in this process were observed. Using a time-lagged research design, data from 386 healthcare staff were gathered and multiple regression and bootstrapping were used to test each hypothesis. The results showed that: (1) PSC negatively relates to ill-health presenteeism. (2) Both perceived instrumental support and perceived emotional support mediate the relationship between PSC and ill-health presenteeism. The affective information processing path is more effective than the cognitive information processing path, but they do not convey a positive interaction effect on ill-health presenteeism. (3) The organic structure moderates the mediating effect of perceived emotional support but does not exert a significant moderating effect on the mediating process of perceived instrumental support. This study particularly identified PSC as a contextual antecedent of ill-health presenteeism. By combining organizational, work-related, and person-related factors, a more comprehensive theoretical framework for the understanding of ill-health presenteeism is developed, thus informing health promotion management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ceftaroline is effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), but the resistance patterns still need to be defined. This study aimed to investigate the susceptibility of S. aureus to ceftaroline and comparator antimicrobial agents in patients hospitalized due to infection and to observe the patterns among different regions and over the years. METHODS: The Antimicrobial Testing Leadership And Surveillance (ATLAS) program includes medical centers located in five geographical regions (Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, Africa-West Asia, and the United States). The isolates were collected from different specimens from patients hospitalized between 2012 and 2017 due to documented complicated skin and soft tissue infection, complicated intra-abdominal infection, complicated urinary tract infection, lower respiratory tract infection, and bloodstream infection. RESULTS: During the study period, 61,045 isolates were tested, including 35,837 MRSA isolates (58.7%) and 25,208 methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) isolates (41.3%). For MRSA, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC)50, MIC90, and MIC range of ceftaroline were 0.5, 2, and 0.015-64 µg/mL. The proportion of susceptible MRSA strains was 89.3%. The proportion of resistant MRSA strains was 0.7%. The susceptibility of all S. aureus, MRSA, and MSSA strains to ceftaroline remained relatively constant from 2012 to 2017. The susceptibility to ceftaroline of S. aureus, MRSA, and MSSA strains from the United States, Europe, South America, and Africa/West Asia was high, while the susceptibility of the strains from Asia-Pacific was lower, especially for MRSA. CONCLUSION: This study reveals the patterns of ceftaroline susceptibility of MRSA and MSSA around the world and over 6 years.

RESUMO

The pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is complex and not fully understood, so the aim of this study was to evaluate whether visceral and somatic hypersensitivity, autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction, and low-grade inflammation of the gut wall are associated with diarrhea-predominant IBS (D-IBS). Sixty-two patients with D-IBS and 20 control subjects participated in the study. Using the ascending method of limits (AML) protocol, we demonstrated that D-IBS patients had significantly lower sensory thresholds compared with healthy controls (P<0.001). Using diverse methods, especially the ischemic sensitivity test, for the first time in China, we confirmed that D-IBS patients have somatic hypersensitivity. They had a significantly higher systolic blood pressure and heart rate after a cold stimulus, indicative of autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction. Compared with the control group, D-IBS patients had a significantly higher level of calprotectin (P<0.001). We also found significant correlations between visceral and somatic hypersensitivity, visceral hypersensitivity and autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction, and somatic hypersensitivity and autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction. Our findings may provide valuable suggestions for the treatment of D-IBS.
