Whenever people spend time outdoors during hot weather, they are putting themselves in potentially stressful situations. Being able to predict whether a person is overheating can be critical in preventing heat-health issues. There is a clear relationship between body core temperature and heat health. However, measuring body core temperature is expensive. Identifying a non-invasive measure that could indicate a person's thermal strain would be valuable. This study investigated five physiological measures as possible surrogates: finger mean skin temperature (FSKT), finger maximum skin temperature (FMSKT), skin conductance level (SCL), heart rate (HR), and heart rate variability (HRV). Furthermore, they were compared against the results of participants' subjective thermal sensation and thermal comfort in a range of hot microclimatic conditions in a hot and humid climate. Results showed that except for SCL, each of the other four physiological measures had a positive significant relationship with thermal sensation, but a negative relationship with thermal comfort. Furthermore, through testing by cumulative link mixed models, HRV was found to be the most suitable surrogate for predicting thermal sensation and thermal comfort through a simple, non-invasive measure in outdoor environment in summer in a hot and humid area. This study highlights the method for predicting human thermal strain and contributes to improve the public health and well-being of urban dwellers in outdoor environments.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of different implant systems on peri-implant soft tissue. METHODS: Forty patients requiring single implant therapy in posterior teeth at Dental and Ophthalmic Clinic of Putuo District from December 2020 to February 2021 were selected. Ten patients were implanted with bone level implants and 30 patients with soft tissue level implants. Periodontal exploration was performed at the buccal side, lingual side, mesial and distal axial angle of the implants, and the gingival crevicular fluid of these locations were taken to detect the enzyme level. The probing depth, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level of the two groups were compared at the day, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after crown restoration. Statistical analysis was completed by SPSS 17.0 software package. RESULTS: The probing depth and ALP level of soft tissue level implants were significantly lower than those of bone level implants at the day, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after crown restoration(P<0.05). At the day when crown restoration was accomplished, AST of soft tissue implant was significantly lower than that of bone level implant(P<0.05). AST in gingival crevicular fluid of bone level implants decreased rapidly in the following three time periods, and close to that of the soft tissue level implants(P>0.05) at last. CONCLUSIONS: Both bone level implants and soft tissue level implants have good clinical effects, but peri-implant soft tissues of the soft tissue level implants show better stability.

PURPOSE: To study on the accuracy of implant-borne single restoration by two production processes with Ti-base to provide experimental data for proper processes of single implant-borne restoration. METHODS: Thirty patients were selected with single posterior teeth missing from the Department of Oral Implantology of Shanghai Putuo District Eye Disease and Dental Disease Prevention and Treatment Institute. The patients were taken 2 traditional impressions clinically for two plaster model equipped with implant analogue. These models were then divided into 2 groups according to different production processes. The experimental group was scanned with the scan body installed in the model implant analogue, while the control group was scanned directly on the Ti-base abutment installed in the model implant analogue. The implant-borne single restorations of the two groups were cut along the buccal-lingual side and the distance between the measuring point to the Ti-Base abutment was observed by electron microscopy. In addition, the breaking limit of zirconia crown was observed, universal test machine was used to load direct force to the crown. SPSS 22.0 software package was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The gap between the implant-borne single restoration to the Ti-base abutment of the experimental group was significantly smaller than that of the control group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). However, by testing the breaking limit of zirconia crown, there was no significant difference(P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Using scan body to transfer the implant position and Ti-base abutment data information to the digital dental design software is more accurate and reliable than directly scanning the Ti-base on the model analogue. Using scan body is recommended for processing and manufacture of implant-borne singe restoration.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of ultrasonic scaling and root planning(SRP) assisted by perioscope on gingival recession of maxillary lateral incisor. METHODS: Thirty-six outpatients with moderate to advanced chronic periodontitis from the Department of Periodontology at Dental and Ophthalmic Clinic of Putuo District from June 2020 to December 2020 were collected as research objects. Periodontal treatment was carried out according to a single-blind split-mouth self-control design randomly with(experimental group, namely perioscope group) or without(control group, namely SRP group) periodontal endoscope.The labial periodontal probing depth (PD), labial attachment loss (AL) and gingival recession(GR) in the maxillary lateral incisors were recorded at baseline, 3 and 6 months, and compared among groups by SPSS 22.0 software package. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between perioscope group and SRP group at baseline. ΔGR (the recession extent of gum within two observation time) in perioscope group was significantly smaller than that in SRP group at 3 months(P<0.05). There was no significant difference in other periodontal indicators at 3 and 6 months between the 2 groups after treatment, but it can be found that the degree of PD reduction and AL improvement in perioscope group was more than those in SRP group, this trend was most obvious at 3 months. PD and AL were significantly different between baseline and 3 months or 6 months in the two groups. There were significant differences in ΔGR at 3 months and 6 months between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with routine SRP, the extent of root surface debridement with perioscope-assisted SRP is thorough and less invasive, and the reduction of gingival recession of labial surface of maxillary lateral incisor at 3 months is significantly less; thus, the aesthetic effect is prominent.

The global spread of COVID-19 has disrupted the normality of people's daily lives, leading the population to social distancing and isolation. The closure of green areas also affected the well-being of the individual during the COVID-19 pandemic. Viewing flowers is expected to have similar positive effects to viewing natural scenery. Therefore, this study investigates how white, red, and yellow flower colors affect individuals' psychological and physiological well-being. The experiment was conducted in an office-like setting with 50 participants. Participants looked at each flower color for 3 min. Electroencephalograms (EEGs), heart rate variability, and skin conductivity were measured to evaluate physiological responses along with both the semantic differential questionnaire (SD) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS) to assess psychological responses. EEGs showed that the mean values of alpha relative power in the prefrontal lobe were significantly higher when viewing yellow and red flowers vs. white flowers. Furthermore, heart rate variability revealed that viewing yellow and red flowers increased parasympathetic nerve activity significantly. After viewing the yellow and red flowers, the average results for each subscale of the POMS questionnaire improved. The vigor (V) subscale and overall mood status values were significantly improved. The results of the SD method revealed that viewing yellow and red flowers resulted in a significantly higher sense of relaxation, cheerfulness, and comfort than viewing white flowers.

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to nature or to green space has positive mental health benefits. Closing of parks and green spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced options for mental health and well-being benefits and could have a greater impact on vulnerable populations, especially the elderly. The present study, therefore, explores the physiopsychological impacts of indirect contact with nature, using forest imagery, on the brain activity and autonomic nervous systems of elderly people. STUDY DESIGN: A within-subject design experiment was used. METHODS: Thirty-four participants aged 82.9 ± 0.78 years were asked to look at bamboo and urban images for 2 min. During the visual stimulation, α relative waves were measured using electroencephalography as an indicator of brain activity. Heart rate variability and skin conductance (SC) responses were utilized as indicators of arousal. Afterward, psychological responses were evaluated using the semantic differential and the Profile of Mood States questionnaires. RESULTS: Visual stimulation with bamboo image induced a significant increase in α relative waves and parasympathetic nervous activity and a significant decrease in SC. In addition, a significant increase in perceptions of "comfortable," "relaxed," "cheerful," and "vigorous" feelings was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Indirect contact with nature enhances the physiological and psychological conditions of the elderly. Findings can be used to guide the new design, renewal, and modification of the living environments of the elderly and those who are unable to get outside.

The therapeutic advantages of seeing plants have gained increasing consideration in stressful modern societies, however, evidence-based studies on how physiological and emotional states of individuals from different nationalities change when seeing different foliage colors are limited. The study was conducted to explore the physiological and psychological advantages of foliage colors as visual stimuli. The experiment included 40 men from two nations (age: 21.34 ± 3.50 years) and was carried out using five foliage colors including green, light green, green-yellow, green-red and green-white. Participants were exposed to each color for 2 min, when seeing the foliage colors, eye movements and oxy-Hb concentrations were continuously measured. Subjective evaluations of emotions were performed utilizing a semantic differential questionnaire. A significant decrease in oxy-Hb concentration in the frontal lobe was associated with the viewing of green and green-white plants by the Japanese participants and with viewing light green and green-yellow by the Egyptian participants. Participants spent higher fixation numbers and longer durations on these colors. The findings indicate that viewing of these plant colors was positively associated with physiological relaxation. Furthermore, these colors were associated with more positive feelings, such as calmness, comfort and naturalness. Therefore, the presence of these colors in spaces may have positive impacts on relaxation and emotional status.

In recent years, children's use of mobile phones has grown rapidly, which might lead to an increase in mental stress and negatively affect their health. Despite increasing evidence that horticultural activity can provide significant health benefits, few scientific evidence-based studies are currently available regarding these benefits to children's health and wellbeing in schools. Therefore, this study aims to determine the potential benefits of horticultural activity for children from both psychological and physiological perspectives. Twenty-six elementary school students (mean age, 8.12 ± 0.21 years) were asked to perform a plant-related task and a mobile game task for 5 min. During both tasks, physiological sensors were used to measure the participants' heart rate variability, skin conductance, and skin temperature. Additionally, the participants' emotional responses were assessed using semantic differential and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory tests immediately after each task. Results revealed that, compared with the mobile game task, participants' health statuses were positively correlated with the horticultural task, including a considerable decrease in skin conductance and sympathetic nervous activity, together with a marginal increase in parasympathetic nervous activity. Such responses suggested that horticultural activity increased relaxation and decreased feelings of stress. Furthermore, the horticultural activity was associated with a substantial increment in comfort, naturalness, relaxation, and cheerfulness feelings, as well as a significant reduction in depression and a reduction in total anxiety levels. Given these positive benefits, horticultural activity may provide a great contribution to children's healthy life at school, prompt psychological relaxation and minimize mental stress relative to smartphone games.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to explore the association between plasma cytokines and febrile status epilepticus (FSE) in children, as well as their potential as biomarkers of acute hippocampal injury. METHODS: Analysis was performed on residual samples of children with FSE (n = 33) as part of the Consequences of Prolonged Febrile Seizures in Childhood study (FEBSTAT) and compared to children with fever (n = 17). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was obtained as part of FEBSTAT within 72 h of FSE. Cytokine levels and ratios of antiinflammatory versus proinflammatory cytokines in children with and without hippocampal T2 hyperintensity were assessed as biomarkers of acute hippocampal injury after FSE. RESULTS: Levels of interleukin (IL)-8 and epidermal growth factor (EGF) were significantly elevated after FSE in comparison to controls. IL-1ß levels trended higher and IL-1RA trended lower following FSE, but did not reach statistical significance. Children with FSE were found to have significantly lower ratios of IL-1RA/IL-1ß and IL-1RA/IL-8. Specific levels of any one individual cytokine were not associated with FSE. However, lower ratios of IL-1RA/IL-1ß, IL-1RA/1L-6, and IL-1RA/ IL-8 were all associated with FSE. IL-6 and IL-8 levels were significantly higher and ratios of IL-1RA/IL-6 and IL-1RA/IL-8 were significantly lower in children with T2 hippocampal hyperintensity on MRI after FSE in comparison to those without hippocampal signal abnormalities. Neither individual cytokine levels nor ratios of IL-1RA/IL-1ß or IL-1RA/IL-8 were predictive of MRI changes. However, a lower ratio of IL-1RA/IL-6 was strongly predictive (odds ratio [OR] 21.5, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-393) of hippocampal T2 hyperintensity after FSE. SIGNIFICANCE: Our data support involvement of the IL-1 cytokine system, IL-6, and IL-8 in FSE in children. The identification of the IL-1RA/IL-6 ratio as a potential biomarker of acute hippocampal injury following FSE is the most significant finding. If replicated in another study, the IL-1RA/IL-6 ratio could represent a serologic biomarker that offers rapid identification of patients at risk for ultimately developing mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE).

OBJECTIVES: To identify risk and risk factors for developing a subsequent febrile seizure (FS) in children with a first febrile status epilepticus (FSE) compared to a first simple febrile seizure (SFS). To identify home use of rescue medications for subsequent FS. METHODS: Cases included a first FS that was FSE drawn from FEBSTAT and Columbia cohorts. Controls were a first SFS. Cases and controls were classified according to established FEBSTAT protocols. Cumulative risk for subsequent FS over a 5-year period was compared in FSE versus SFS, and Cox proportional hazards regression was conducted. Separate analysis examined subsequent FS within FSE. The use of rescue medications at home was assessed for subsequent FS. RESULTS: Risk for a subsequent FSE was significantly increased in FSE versus SFS. Any magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormality increased the risk 3.4-fold (p < 0.05), adjusting for age at first FS and FSE and in analyses restricted to children whose first FS was FSE (any MRI abnormality hazard ratio [HR] 2.9, p < 0.05). The risk for a second FS of any type or of subsequent FS lasting >10 min over the 5-year follow-up did not differ in FSE versus SFS. Rectal diazepam was administered at home to 5 (23.8%) of 21 children with subsequent FS lasting ≥10 min. SIGNIFICANCE: Compared to controls, FSE was associated with an increased risk for subsequent FSE, suggesting the propensity of children with an initial prolonged seizure to experience a prolonged recurrence. Any baseline MRI abnormality increased the recurrence risk when FSE was compared to SFS and when FSE was studied alone. A minority of children with a subsequent FS lasting 10 min or longer were treated with rectal diazepam at home, despite receiving prescriptions after the first FSE. This indicates the need to further improve the education of clinicians and parents in order to prevent subsequent FSE.

In Arabidopsis, three lipase-like regulators, SAG101, EDS1, and PAD4, act downstream of resistance protein-associated defense signaling. Although the roles of SAG101, EDS1, and PAD4 in biotic stress have been extensively studied, little is known about their functions in plant responses to abiotic stresses. Here, we show that SAG101, EDS1, and PAD4 are involved in the regulation of freezing tolerance in Arabidopsis. With or without cold acclimation, the sag101, eds1, and pad4 single mutants, as well as their double mutants, exhibited similarly enhanced tolerance to freezing temperatures. Upon cold exposure, the sag101, eds1, and pad4 mutants showed increased transcript levels of C-REPEAT/DRE BINDING FACTORs and their regulons compared with the wild type. Moreover, freezing-induced cell death and accumulation of hydrogen peroxide were ameliorated in sag101, eds1, and pad4 mutants. The sag101, eds1, and pad4 mutants had much lower salicylic acid (SA) and diacylglycerol (DAG) contents than the wild type, and exogenous application of SA and DAG compromised the freezing tolerance of the mutants. Furthermore, SA suppressed the cold-induced expression of DGATs and DGKs in the wild-type leaves. These findings indicate that SAG101, EDS1, and PAD4 are involved in the freezing response in Arabidopsis, at least in part, by modulating the homeostasis of SA and DAG.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the relation of calcaneus fractures and compartment syhdromes of the foot taken place. METHODS: From April 2003 to March 2008, there were 78 cases with calcaneus fracures involving 72 males and 6 females, aged from 17 to 56 years (averaged 34.2 years). The intracompartment pressures of 54 feet with the severity swell were measured with the Whiteside's method. Among them, 8 patients were final diagnosed the compartment syndromes of the foot. After incision decompression through the foot bottom wall,the whole foot swell fade away quickly. After 5 to 10 days the decompression incision were sutured. RESULTS: The 8 patients were followed up for from 7 to 12 months,kinesthetic sense of the whole foot was mormal. None of the cases occurrenced claw toes, instep contracture and stiffness of the toes, et al. CONCLUSION: Compartment syndromes of the foot general occurrences during 1 to 3 days after calcaneus fractures. Fractures of Sanders II-IV is easy to complicate compartment syndromes of the foot.
