RESUMO

The determination of activity concentrations of the CTBT-relevant radioxenon relies on a robust calibration method. A procedure is outlined using four radioxenon spikes for beta-gamma detector-systems with 4π geometry. Detection efficiencies of beta-gamma coincidences in the net count calculation method, including the interference matrix between radioxenon and radon, are determined by three measurement channels: beta singles, gamma singles and beta-gamma coincidences, without reference activity values.

For the enhancement of the International Data Centre's products, specifically the Standard Screened Radionuclide Event Bulletin, an important step is to establish methods to associate the detections of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty-relevant nuclides in different atmospheric radioactivity samples with the same radionuclide release to characterize its source for the purpose of nuclear explosion monitoring. Episodes of anomalously high activity concentrations in samples at the International Monitoring System radionuclide stations are used as the primary assumption for being related to the same release. For multiple isotope observations, the consistency of their isotopic ratios in subsequent samples with radioactive decay is another plausible hint for one unique release. The radioxenon observations that are associated with the nuclear test announced by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 2013 serve as case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of this basic approach and how the additionally associated samples improve the source location. We use two distinct puff releases, both of short duration, for the atmospheric transport modelling simulations to gain further evidence and confidence in our sample association study by identifying the air masses that link the releases to multiple samples. This basic approach will support the definition of analysis procedures and criteria for automatic sample association to be implemented in the Standard Screened Radionuclide Event Bulletin, which is of relevance for an expert technical analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the most fatal type of stroke worldwide. Herein, we aim to develop a predictive model based on computed tomography (CT) markers in an ICH cohort and validate it in another cohort. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study was conducted in 3 medical centers in China. The values of CT markers, including hypodensities, hematoma density, blend sign, black hole sign, island sign, midline shift, baseline hematoma volume, and satellite sign, in predicting poor outcome were analyzed by logistic regression analysis. A nomogram was developed based on the results of multivariate logistic regression analysis in development cohort. Area under curve (AUC) and calibration plot were used to assess the accuracy of nomogram in this development cohort and validate in another cohort. RESULTS: A total of 1,498 patients were included in this study. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that hypodensities, black hole sign, island sign, midline shift, and baseline hematoma volume were independently associated with poor outcome in development cohort. The AUC was 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.73-0.76) in the internal validation with development cohort and 0.74 (95% CI: 0.72-0.75) in the external validation with validation cohort. The calibration plot in development and validation cohort indicated that the nomogram was well calibrated. CONCLUSIONS: CT markers of hypodensities, black hole sign, and island sign might predict poor outcome of ICH patients within 90 days.

To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis and evaluate the effect of tranexamic acid in patients with traumatic brain injury. PubMed, EMBASE, and CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) were searched to identify randomized controlled trials and evaluate the effect of tranexamic acid in traumatic brain injury patients. The primary outcome was mortality. Two reviewers extracted the data independently. The random effect meta-analysis was used to estimate the aggregate effect size of 95% confidence intervals. Six randomized controlled trials investigating tranexamic acid versus placebo and 30073 patients were included. Compared with placebo, tranexamic acid decreased the mortality (RR = 0.92; 95% CI, 0.87-0.96; p < 0.001) and growth of hemorrhagic mass (RR = 0.78; 95% CI, 0.61-0.99; p = 0.04). However, tranexamic acid could not decrease disability or independent, neurosurgery, vascular embolism, and stroke. Current evidence suggested that compared with placebo, tranexamic acid could reduce mortality and growth of hemorrhagic mass. This finding indicated that patients with traumatic brain injury should be treated with tranexamic acid.

PURPOSE: Isoborneol has been used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease for several years in China. However, the mechanism is still unclear. The aim of this study was to identify the novel mechanism of isoborneol for its application in atherosclerotic disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The whole-genome gene expression profiles of MCF-7 cells treated with/or without isoborneol were detected by mRNA microarray analysis. The degree of similarity between the gene expression profiles was compared with the Connectivity Map (CMAP) database. An MTT assay was used to assess the toxicity of isoborneol on RAW 264.7 cells. Oil red O staining and a Dil-ox-LDL uptake assay in RAW 264.7 cells were also used to detect the accumulation of lipids in the macrophages and the uptake of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL). RESULTS: Isoborneol was proved to have mRNA expression profiles similar to that of ikarugamycin which can inhibit the uptake of ox-LDL. This process has proved to be an important cause of foam cell formation and early atherosclerotic lesions. It is speculated, therefore, that isoborneol may show similar activity to that shown by ikarugamycin. Subsequently, it was shown that RAW 264.7 cells reduced the absorption of ox-LDL and the accumulation of intracellular lipids after treatment with different concentrations of isoborneol. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that isoborneol inhibits macrophage consumption of ox-LDL, thereby preventing the accumulation of lipids in the macrophages. These results provide evidence for the application of isoborneol in atherosclerotic disease.

The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of the results of whole-body measurements by comparison with the urine collection method in the PRRT with (177)Lu and furthermore to develop a more accurate method of paired measurements. Excreted samples were collected at given intervals and activities were measured by a dose calibrator. Traditionally, whole-body activities during subsequent measurements are normalized individually to the administered activity. In order to correct for the effects of the activity in the bladder during the baseline measurement before the first voiding and activity redistributions in the patient body during subsequent measurements, a series of paired measurements before and after each voiding were carried out. Time-dependent detector responses at given times were derived and time-activity retentions were then determined. Compared to the results of the urine collection, whole-body activities by traditional whole-body measurements were overestimated by ca. 14% at 1 h after administration and randomly varied from -29% to 49% at 24 h. Measurement uncertainties of whole-body activities were from ± 4% (the coverage factor k=2) at 1 h to >± 20% at 24 h by the urine collection and ± 7% by paired measurements, respectively. Whole-body activities at 1 h by paired measurements were validated using the results by measurements of the collected first urine. The new method of paired measurements has an equivalent measurement accuracy and even better during the later measurements with respect to the urine collection method and therefore can replace urine approach for assessing the time-activity remaining in the patient body.
