RESUMO

Sarcopenia caused by aging is an important factor leading to a decline in the quality of life of older people. Apoptosis in muscle atrophy accelerates the process of muscle loss in older populations. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of 32 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance training (RT) on the skeletal muscle-related indices and provide a theoretical basis for regulating the mitochondrial-mediated pathway to delay sarcopenia. We randomly selected 10 from eight-month-old male SD rats (N = 130) as the baseline group; after 1 week of adaptive feeding, the rats were sacrificed. The remaining rats were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control group (C, N = 40, natural aging for 32 weeks), HIIT group (H, N = 40, performed six loops of 3 min at 90% and 3 min at 50% VO2 max speed treadmill running, with 5 min at 70% VO2 max speed at the beginning and the end of the training, 3 times a week for 32 weeks), and resistance group (R, n = 40, 46 min per day, 3 days per week, with a 30% maximum load on a treadmill with a slope of 35°, 15 m/min). The soleus muscles were collected for analysis at baseline and every 8 weeks. Aging resulted in decreased soleus muscle mass and Bcl-2 levels in the mitochondria, while the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Bax did not change. HIIT reversed the age-associated activation of pro-apoptotic processes, but RT did not. In addition, when rats were aged from 8 to 16 months, the level of Cyt-C did not change, the Caspase-9 levels and Caspase-3 levels decreased gradually in the soleus muscles, the rats of both the HIIT and RT groups had these indices decreased at 32 weeks. The results suggest that the age-associated loss of muscle mass was reversed by training, and the effect of RT was better than that of HIIT. Both the HIIT and RT rats showed a decrease in the apoptosis of skeletal muscle cells after 32 weeks of intervention. HIIT performed better for long-term intervention regarding the pro-apoptotic factors. This study warranted further research to delineate the underlying mechanism of effects of different exercise methods on the changes of aging skeletal muscle at in vivo level.

OBJECTIVE: To culturally adapt the VISA-A into a simplified Chinese version (VISA-A-CHN) and test its measurement properties. DESIGN: Methodological study; SETTING: Hospital and university laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: 240 subjects were divided into the healthy (n = 80), at-risk (n = 80), and tendinopathy groups (n = 80). MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: The internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and the floor and ceiling effect of the VISA-A-CHN. RESULTS: The VISA-A-CHN showed adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.73, 95% CI 0.63 to 0.81), excellent test-retest reliability (ICC3A,1 = 0.97, 95%CI = 0.95 to 0.98), standard error of measurement of 2.2 points, minimum detectable change of 6.0 points, with no floor and ceiling effects. Two factors (pain/symptoms and physical function/activity) were extracted in exploratory factor analysis. There were moderate associations of VISA-A-CHN score with scores of Lower Extremity Functional Scale and SF-36 physical components (rs = 0.53-0.74, P < 0.01) but low associations with SF-36 mental components (rs = 0.12-0.22, P > 0.05). VISA-A-CHN mean score of Achilles tendinopathy group was significantly lower than those of healthy and at-risk groups (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The VISA-A-CHN is equivalent to the original version in terms of language and measurement properties. It can be used as the outcome measure for Chinese patients with Achilles tendinopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the applicability of Chinese Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT-C) and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM-C) as inclusion criteria recommended by the International Ankle Consortium (IAC) for study of chronic ankle instability in the Chinese individuals. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparative design with known groups. SETTING: Research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: 145 participants with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and 66 participants without injury. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: CAIT-C and FAAM-C Activities of Daily Living (FAAM-C-ADL) and FAAM-C Sports (FAAM-C-Sports). RESULTS: The CAIT-C scores (18.2 ± 5.6), FAAM-C-ADL scores (97.0 ± 4.3) and FAAM-C-Sports scores (92.2 ± 10.3) of the CAI group were all lower than the CAIT-C scores (27.4 ± 3.1), FAAM-ADL scores (99.0 ± 2.1) and FAAM-Sports scores (98.4 ± 3.1) (P < 0.01) of the uninjured group. The recommended cutoff score of CAIT-C<24 by the IAC for identifying CAI had a sensitivity of 80.7% and a specificity of 84.9%. If the recommended cutoff scores of FAAM-ADL<90,FAAM-Sports<80 by the IAC as inclusion criteria for the study of CAI were applied, 97% of participants with CAI in this sample would be excluded. CONCLUSION: The results support the recommended cutoff score of CAIT-C<24 by the IAC to identify Chinese individuals with CAI for study. However, the recommended cutoff scores of FAAM-ADL<90 and FAAM-Sports<80 will exclude most Chinese individuals with CAI having only mild functional impairments.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nowadays, the world is facing a common problem that the population aging process is accelerating. How to delay metabolic disorders in middle-aged and elderly people, has become a hot scientific and social issue worthy of attention. The liver plays an important role in lipid metabolism, and abnormal lipid metabolism may lead to liver diseases. Exercise is an easily controlled and implemented intervention, which has attracted extensive attention in improving the health of liver lipid metabolism in the elderly. This article reviewed the body aging process, changes of lipid metabolism in the aging liver, and the mechanism and effects of different interventions on lipid metabolism in the aging liver, especially focusing on exercise intervention. METHODS: A literature search was performed using PubMed-NCBI, EBSCO Host and Web of Science, and also a report from WHO. In total, 143 studies were included from 1986 to 15 February 2020. CONCLUSION: Nutritional and pharmacological interventions can improve liver disorders, and nutritional interventions are less risky relatively. Exercise intervention can prevent and improve age-related liver disease, especially the best high-intensity interval training intensity and duration is expected to be one of the research directions in the future.

CONTEXT: Good sleep is an important recovery method for prevention and treatment of overtraining in sport practice. Whether sleep is regulated by melatonin after red-light irradiation in athletes is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of red light on sleep quality and endurance performance of Chinese female basketball players. DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING: Athletic training facility of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and research laboratory of the China Institute of Sport Science. Patients or Other Participants: Twenty athletes of the Chinese People's Liberation Army team (age = 18.60 6 3.60 years) took part in the study. Participants were divided into red-light treatment (n = 10) and placebo (n = 10) groups. INTERVENTION(S): The red-light treatment participants received 30 minutes of irradiation from a red-light therapy instrument every night for 14 days. The placebo group did not receive light illumination. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was completed, serum melatonin was assessed, and 12-minute run was performed at preintervention (baseline) and postintervention (14 days). RESULTS: The 14-day whole-body irradiation with red-light treatment improved the sleep, serum melatonin level, and endurance performance of the elite female basketball players (P < .05). We found a correlation between changes in global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and serum melatonin levels (r = -0.695, P = .006). CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirmed the effectiveness of body irradiation with red light in improving the quality of sleep of elite female basketball players and offered a nonpharmacologic and noninvasive therapy to prevent sleep disorders after training.

Currently, it is unclear which index of haematological parameters could be used to most easily monitor iron deficiency during endurance training. To address this question, 16 male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to two groups: a sedentary group (n = 8) and an exercised group (n = 8). Initially, animals in the exercise group started running on a treadmill at a rate of 30 m/min, on a 0% grade, for 1 min/session. Running time was gradually increased by 2 min/day. The training plan was one session per day during the initial 2 weeks and two sessions per day during the third to ninth week. At the end of the 9-week experiment, we analysed the blood of the experimental animals for haemoglobin levels, erythrocyte numbers, haematocrit, serum iron levels, total iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation, serum ferritin levels and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) levels, and we calculated the ratio of sTfR/ferritin. Erythrocyte numbers, haemoglobin levels and haematocrit values were decreased after 9 weeks of exercise, but sTfR and sTfR/ferritin values were increased (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). The training regime significantly increased TfR mRNA levels in the bone marrow cells of the exercised rats compared with the sedentary group (1.8 ± 0.5 vs. 1.1 ± 0.2, P < 0.01). These results revealed a significant correlation between TfR levels in the bone marrow cells and the ratio of sTfR/ferritin (r = 0.517; P < 0.01) and sTfR levels (r = 0.206; P < 0.05) in sedentary and exercised rats. In conclusion, we show that sTfR indices and the ratio of sTfR/ferritin could be useful indicators for monitoring iron deficiency during endurance training.

BACKGROUND: Endurance exercise is known to promote a substantial effect on the energy balance in rats and humans. However, little is known about the exact mechanisms for the appetite-suppressive effects of endurance exercise. We hypothesized that endurance training might activate signaling cascades in the hypothalamus known to be involved in leptin signaling. METHODS: 16 male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to two groups: sedentary (n = 8) and exercise groups (n = 8). Animals in the exercise group started treadmill running at 30 m/min, 0% grade, for 1 min/bout. Running time was gradually increased by 2 min/bout every day. The training plan was one bout per day during initial two weeks, and two bouts per day during 3rd-9th week. At the end of nine-week experiment, blood was analyzed for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), free fatty acid (FFA), interleukin (IL)-6, and leptin in both groups. Activations of janus kinase 2-signaling transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2-STAT3), protein kinase B (Akt), extracellular regulated kninase (ERKs), and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) in hypothalamus were measured in the end of nine weeks of exercise protocol. RESULTS: Nine-week endurance exercise induced lower concentrations of LDL-C, TG, TC, FFA, and leptin in rats (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Nine-week endurance exercise significantly increased the circulating IL-6 concentration compared with sedentary group (239.6 ± 37.2 pg/ml vs. 151.8 ± 31.5 pg/ml, P < 0.01). Exercise rats showed significant increases in JAK2, STAT3, Akt, ERKs, and SOCS3 phosphorylations compared with sedentary rats (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The data suggest that endurance exercise is a leptin signaling mimetic in hypothalamus of Wistar rats.
