Pampus is a widespread species of fish in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans that has significant commercial worth. Its evolutionary history and phylogenetics are still poorly understood, and details on its intraspecific taxonomy are debatable, despite some morphological and molecular research. Here, we analyzed this species using skeletal structure data as well as nuclear (S7 gene) and mitochondrial genetic information (COI, D-loop and mitogenomes). We found that the genetic distance between P. argenteus and P. echinogaster was much smaller than that between other Pampus species, and both maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic trees yielded almost identical tree topologies. An additional and adjacent M repeat was found in the downstream region of the IQM gene cluster of P. argenteus and P. echinogaster, and the trnL2 gene of P. minor was translocated. The genus Pampus experienced early rapid radiation during the Palaeocene with major lineages diversifying within a relatively narrow timescale. Additionally, three different methods were conducted to distinguish the genus Pampus species, proving that P. argenteus and P. echinogaster are the same species, and P. liuorum is speculated to be a valid species. Overall, our study provides new insights not only into the evolutionary history of Pampus but its intraspecific taxonomy as well.

Evaluating the contributions of geographic distance and environmental heterogeneity to the genetic divergence can inform the demographic history and responses to environmental change of natural populations. The isolation-by-distance (IBD) reveals that genetic differentiation among populations increases with geographic distance, while the isolation-by-environment (IBE) assumes a linear relationship between genetic variation and environmental differences among populations. Here, we sampled and genotyped 330 individuals from 18 natural populations of Cephalotaxus oliveri throughout the species' distribution. Twenty-eight EST-SSR markers were applied to analyze population genetics, for the investigation of the driving factors that shaped spatial structure. In addition, we identified the outlier loci under positive selection and tested their association with environmental factors. The results showed a moderate genetic diversity in C. oliveri and high genetic differentiation among populations. Population structure analyses indicated that 18 populations were clustered into two major groups. We observed that the genetic diversity of central populations decreased and the genetic differentiation increased towards the marginal populations. Additionally, the signatures of IBD and IBE were detected in C. oliveri, and IBE provided a better contribution to genetic differentiation. Six outlier loci under positive selection were demonstrated to be closely correlated with environmental variables, among which bio8 was associated with the greatest number of loci. Genetic evidence suggests the consistency of the central-marginal hypothesis (CMH) for C. oliveri. Furthermore, our results suggest that temperature-related variables played an important role in shaping genetic differentiation.

Objectives: To compare parameters of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) to evaluate which can better describe the microstructural changes of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis patients and to characterize the non-Gaussian diffusion patterns of the whole brain and their correlation with neuropsychological impairments in these patients. Materials and methods: DTI and DKI parameters were measured in 57 patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and 42 healthy controls. Voxel-based analysis was used to evaluate group differences between white matter and gray matter separately. The modified Rankin Scale (mRS) was used to evaluate the severity of the neurofunctional recovery of patients, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to assess global cognitive performance, and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and fatigue severity scale (FSS) were used to evaluate depressive and fatigue states. Results: Patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis showed significantly decreased radial kurtosis (RK) in the right extranucleus in white matter (P < 0.001) and notably decreased kurtosis fractional anisotropy (KFA) in the right precuneus, the right superior parietal gyrus (SPG), the left precuneus, left middle occipital gyrus, and left superior occipital gyrus in gray matter (P < 0.001). Gray matter regions with decreased KFA overlapped with those with decreased RK in the left middle temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus (STG), supramarginal gyrus (SMG), postcentral gyrus (POCG), inferior parietal but supramarginal gyrus, angular gyrus (IPL) and angular gyrus (ANG) (P < 0.001). The KFA and RK in the left ANG, IPL and POCG correlated positively with MoCA scores. KFA and RK in the left ANG, IPL, POCG and SMG correlated negatively with mRS scores. KFA in the left precuneus and right SPG as well as RK in the left STG correlated negatively with mRS scores. No significant correlation between KFA and RK in the abnormal brain regions and HAMD and FSS scores was found. Conclusion: The microstructural changes in gray matter were much more extensive than those in white matter in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis. The brain damage reflected by DKI parameters, which have higher sensitivity than parameters of DTI, correlated with cognitive impairment and the severity of the neurofunctional recovery.

Objective: To develop a fusion model combining clinical variables, deep learning (DL), and radiomics features to predict the functional outcomes early in patients with adult anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis in Southwest China. Methods: From January 2012, a two-center study of anti-NMDAR encephalitis was initiated to collect clinical and MRI data from acute patients in Southwest China. Two experienced neurologists independently assessed the patients' prognosis at 24 moths based on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) (good outcome defined as mRS 0-2; bad outcome defined as mRS 3-6). Risk factors influencing the prognosis of patients with acute anti-NMDAR encephalitis were investigated using clinical data. Five DL and radiomics models trained with four single or combined four MRI sequences (T1-weighted imaging, T2-weighted imaging, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging and diffusion weighted imaging) and a clinical model were developed to predict the prognosis of anti-NMDAR encephalitis. A fusion model combing a clinical model and two machine learning-based models was built. The performances of the fusion model, clinical model, DL-based models and radiomics-based models were compared using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and accuracy and then assessed by paired t-tests (P < 0.05 was considered significant). Results: The fusion model achieved the significantly greatest predictive performance in the internal test dataset with an AUC of 0.963 [95% CI: (0.874-0.999)], and also significantly exhibited an equally good performance in the external validation dataset, with an AUC of 0.927 [95% CI: (0.688-0.975)]. The radiomics_combined model (AUC: 0.889; accuracy: 0.857) provided significantly superior predictive performance than the DL_combined (AUC: 0.845; accuracy: 0.857) and clinical models (AUC: 0.840; accuracy: 0.905), whereas the clinical model showed significantly higher accuracy. Compared with all single-sequence models, the DL_combined model and the radiomics_combined model had significantly greater AUCs and accuracies. Conclusions: The fusion model combining clinical variables and machine learning-based models may have early predictive value for poor outcomes associated with anti-NMDAR encephalitis.

Cephalotaxus oliveri is an endemic conifer of China, which has medicinal and ornamental value. However, the limited molecular markers and genetic information are insufficient for further genetic studies of this species. In this study, we characterized and developed the EST-SSRs from transcriptome sequences for the first time. The results showed that a total of 5089 SSRs were identified from 36446 unigenes with a density of one SSR per 11.1 kb. The most common type was trinucleotide repeats, excluding mononucleotide repeats, followed by dinucleotide repeats. AAG/CTT and AT/AT exhibited the highest frequency in the trinucleotide and dinucleotide repeats, respectively. Of the identified SSRs, 671, 1125, and 1958 SSRs were located in CDS, 3'UTR, and 5'UTR, respectively. Functional annotation showed that the SSR-containing unigenes were involved in growth and development with various biological functions. Among successfully designed primer pairs, 238 primer pairs were randomly selected for amplification and validation of EST-SSR markers and 47 primer pairs were identified as polymorphic. Finally, 28 high-polymorphic primers were used for genetic analysis and revealed a moderate level of genetic diversity. Seven natural C. oliveri sampling sites were divided into two genetic groups. Furthermore, the 28 EST-SSRs had 96.43, 71.43, and 78.57% of transferability rate in Cephalotaxus fortune, Ametotaxus argotaenia, and Pseudotaxus chienii, respectively. These markers developed in this study lay the foundation for further genetic and adaptive evolution studies in C. oliveri and related species.

BACKGROUND: Existing studies have reported that patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have an increased risk of depressive symptoms. We aimed to evaluate the association between serum cystatin C levels and depressive symptoms in DM patients. METHODS: Serum levels of cystatin C were measured in 254 patients with DM at baseline. Cox proportional hazard analysis was used to evaluate the value of serum cystatin C in predicting depressive symptoms in patients with DM. RESULTS: Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that serum cystatin C levels were independently associated with Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) scores after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), current smoking status, current drinking, admission systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP), cardiovascular disease (CVD) history and laboratory measurements in patients with DM at baseline (Sß= -0.127; 95% CI, - 0.185- - 0.083; P=0.002). The multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis revealed that serum cystatin C (HR=2.360, 95% CI 1.500-3.891, P-trend <0.001) was an independent prognostic factor for cognitive decline in these patients with DM during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that increased serum cystatin C levels were significantly and independently associated with depressive symptoms and had independent predictive value for depressive symptoms in patients with DM. Serum cystatin C might enable early recognition of depressive symptoms among DM patients.

A general strategy involving a novel and highly efficient aerobic benzylic oxidation promoted by cheap, reusable activated carbon in water is developed. Application of this method has been demonstrated in the benign synthesis of bioactive 2-benzoylbenzimidazoles and 2-benzoylbenzoxazoles derivatives. Furthermore, the activated carbon catalyst could be recovered and reused at least three times without significantly losing its activity. Preliminary research suggests that the oxidation mechanism may involve intermediate hydroperoxidation and that a portion of the final carbonyl product is obtained through a secondary benzylic alcohol intermediate. Finally, theoretical calculations reveal that the oxidation yield is closely associated with the electric density at the benzylic position of the substrate.
