RESUMO

Benzothiazole (BTH), benzotriazole (BTR), and their respective derivatives (BTHs and BTRs) are emerging environmental pollutants with widespread human exposure and oncogenic potential. Studies have demonstrated adverse effects of exposure to certain BTHs and BTRs on the respiratory system. However, no study has examined the associations between exposure to BTHs and BTRs and lung cancer risk. We aimed to examine the associations between urinary concentrations of BTHs and BTRs and the risk of lung cancer in the general population from Quzhou, China. We conducted a nested case-control study in an ongoing prospective Quzhou Environmental Exposure and Human Health (QEEHH) cohort, involving 20, 694 participants who provided urine samples during April 2019-July 2020. With monthly follow-up until November 2022, 212 lung cancer cases were recruited and 1:1 matched with healthy controls based on age and sex. We estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of lung cancer risk associated with urinary BTHs and BTRs concentrations using conditional logistic regression models after controlling for potential covariates. We also examined effect modification by several covariates, including sex, socioeconomic status, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and dietary habit. Creatinine-corrected urinary BTH and 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole (2-OH-BTH) levels were significantly associated with the risk of lung cancer, after adjusting for a variety of covariates. Participants in the highest quartile of BTH had a 95% higher risk of lung cancer, compared with those in the lowest quartile (adjusted OR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.08-3.49; p for trend = 0.01). Participants with higher levels of urinary 2-OH-BTH had an 83% higher risk of lung cancer than those with lower levels (adjusted OR = 1.83, 95% CI: 1.16-2.88; p for trend = 0.01). Exposure to elevated levels of BTH and 2-OH-BTH may be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. These associations were not modified by socio-demographic characteristics.

Background: Optimal blood pressure (BP) management strategy among the elderly remains controversial, with insufficient consideration of long-term BP trajectory. This study aimed to identify BP trajectory patterns as well as terminal BP trajectory among the Chinese elderly and to explore the relationships between BP trajectories and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Methods: We included 11,181 participants older than 60 at baseline (mean age, 80.98 ± 10.71) with 42,871 routine BP measurements from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Latent class trajectory analysis and Cox proportional hazard model were conducted to identify trajectory patterns and their associations with mortality. Furthermore, we also applied mixed-effects model to identify terminal BP trajectories among the elderly. Results: Compared with stable at normal high level trajectory, excess systolic BP (SBP) trajectory with decreasing trend was associated with a 34% (HR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.23-1.45) higher risk of all-cause mortality. Considering the competing risk of non-CVD death, excess BP trajectory with decreasing trend had a more pronounced effect on CVD mortality, in which HR (95% CI) was 1.67 (1.17, 2.37). Similar results were also found in diastolic BP (DBP), pulse pressure (PP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) trajectories. We further conducted a mixed-effects model and observed that SBP and PP trajectories first increased and began to decline slightly six years before death. In contrast, DBP and MAP showed continuous decline 15 years before death. Conclusion: Long-term BP trajectory was associated with all-cause mortality, especially CVD mortality. Keeping a stable BP over time may be an important way for CVD prevention among the elderly.

Background: This study aimed to examine the association between sleep duration, sleep problems, and depression in Northwest China. Method: Depression was diagnosed at the hospital and self-reported by the participants in the baseline survey. Sleep duration and problems, including difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep, early morning awakening, daytime dysfunction, use of sleeping pills or drugs, and any sleep problems, were obtained by a self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for exploring the association between sleep duration, sleep problems, and depression, adjusting for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and health behaviors. The association between depression and sleep duration was also evaluated continuously with restricted cubic spline curves based on logistic models. Results: 36,515 adults from Regional Ethnic Cohort Study in Northwest China were included. About 24.04% of participants reported short sleep duration (<7 h), and 15.64% reported long sleep duration (≥9 h). Compared with standard sleep duration (7-9 h), short sleep duration was associated with a higher risk of depression (OR: 1.69, 95%CI: 1.26-2.27, p = 0.001). Self-reported sleep problems were also related to four times depression risk increased (OR: 4.02, 95%CI: 3.03-5.35, p < 0.001) compared with no sleep problems. In addition, a nonlinear relationship was found between sleep duration and depression after adjusting covariates (p = 0.043). Conclusion: Sleep duration and sleep problems are associated with depression. Enough sleep time and healthy sleep habits in life course might be a practical health promotion approach to reduce depression risk in Northwest Chinese adults. A further study from cohort study is needed to verify the temporal association.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation perturbations during pregnancy may impact fetal growth; however, research on the association between dietary inflammation and birth outcomes is limited and inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: This study seeks to assess whether the dietary inflammatory potential is related to birth outcomes among pregnant women in China. METHODS: A total of 7194 mothers aged 17-46 y and their infants in China were included in this cross-sectional study. Dietary intake was assessed by a FFQ, which yielded scores on the energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII). Birth outcomes included birth weight, gestational age, birth weight z score, low birth weight (LBW), macrosomia, preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age (SGA), large-for-gestational-age (LGA), and birth defects. Generalized estimating equation and restricted cubic spline fit each outcome on continuous or quartiles of E-DII after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS: The maternal E-DII ranged from -5.35 to 6.77. Overall, birth weight and gestation age (mean ± SD) were 3267.9 ± 446.7 g and 39.6 ± 1.3 wk, respectively, and the birth weight z score was 0.02 ± 1.14. A total of 3.2% of infants were born with LBW, 6.1% with macrosomia, 3.0% were preterm birth, 10.7% were born SGA, 10.0% were born LGA, and 2.0% were born with birth defects. E-DII was associated with a 9.8 g decrease in birth weight (95% CI: -16.9, -2.6) and a 1.09-fold (95% CI: 1.01, 1.18), 1.11-fold (95% CI: 1.02, 1.21), and 1.12-fold (95% CI: 1.02, 1.24) greater risk of LBW, preterm birth, and birth defects, respectively. The maternal E-DII score was nonlinearly associated with gestational age (P for linearity = 0.009, P for curvature = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS: Among pregnant Chinese women, proinflammatory diets during pregnancy were related to reduced offspring birth weight and an increased risk of LBW, preterm birth, and birth defects. These findings might inform potential prevention strategies for pregnant women in China.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between a plant-based diet and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Chinese adults. METHODS: Based on the data from the 2004-2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey and the corresponding edition of China Food Composition, we calculated the healthy plant-based diet indices (hPDI) and unhealthy plant-based diet indices (uPDI). The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MetS. Mediation analysis was further conducted to explore the mediator role of Body Mass Index (BMI) in the association between hPDI and MetS. RESULTS: We included 10,013 participants, and over a median follow-up of 5 years, 961 patients (9.60%) developed MetS. Compared to those in the lowest quintile of hPDI score, we found that those in the highest quintile of hPDI score had a 28% lower ([HR]: 0.72, 95% CI 0.56-0.93, Ptrend = 0.021) risk of developing MetS and had a 20% lower (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.80, 95% CI 0.70-0.92, Ptrend = 0.004) risk of developing abdominal obesity. No significant associations were observed between uPDI and the MetS, but those in the highest quintile of uPDI score had a 36% higher (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.36, 95% CI 1.20-1.64, Ptrend < 0.001) risk of developing abdominal obesity, compared to those in the lowest quintile of uPDI score. In exploratory analysis, we observed that BMI at baseline mediated 27.8% of the association between hPDI and incident MetS, and BMI at baseline mediated 29.7% of the association between hPDI and abdominal obesity. CONCLUSION: The current findings reveal a possible causal relationship between a healthy plant-based diet and a reduced risk of MetS, especially abdominal obesity. It is observed that BMI may mediate the relationship between hPDI score and MetS. Controlling early dietary patterns and BMI may help reduce the risk of MetS.

Radon (222Rn) is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. Forty percent of the natural radiation to which the human body is exposed comes from radon gas. Long-term exposure to high concentrations of radon induces systemic damage. However, the effect of such exposure on gut microbiota still remains unclear. We explored the effects of radon exposure on gut microbiota and its metabolites short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in BALB/c mice by cumulative inhalation of radon at 30, 60, and 120 working level months (WLM). The radon-exposed mice showed slow body weight gain, decreased serum triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins, decreased diversity, lower community structure, and altered abundance of the gut microbiota. Lachnospiraceae, Amaricoccus, and Enterococcus could differentiate the IR30, 60, and 120 WLM groups, respectively. Meanwhile, radon exposure affected the metabolic functions of the gut microbiota, mainly carbohydrate, amino acid, and lipid metabolic pathways. The altered abundance of microbiota and resulting reduced levels of SCFAs may aggravate the damage caused by radon exposure.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest that both ambient ozone (O3) and temperature were associated with increased risks of adverse birth outcomes. However, very few studies explored their interaction effects, especially for small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA). OBJECTIVES: To estimate the modification effects of ambient temperature on associations of ambient O3 exposure before and during pregnancy with preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), SGA and LGA based on multicity birth cohorts. METHODS: A total of 56,905 singleton pregnant women from three birth cohorts conducted in Tianjin, Beijing and Maoming, China, were included in the study. Maximum daily 8-h average O3 concentrations of each pregnant woman from the preconception period to delivery for every day were estimated by matching their home addresses with the Tracking Air Pollution in China (TAP) datasets. We first applied the Cox proportional-hazards regression model to evaluate the city-specific effects of O3 exposure before and during pregnancy on adverse birth outcomes at different temperature levels with adjustment for potential confounders, and then a meta-analysis across three birth cohorts was conducted to calculate the pooled associations. RESULTS: In pooled analysis, significant modification effects of ambient temperature on associations of ambient O3 with PTB, LBW and LGA were observed (Pinteraction < 0.05). For a 10 µg/m3 increase in ambient O3 exposure at high temperature level (> 75th percentile), the risk of LBW increased by 28 % (HR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.13-1.46) during the second trimester and the risk of LGA increased by 116% (HR: 2.16, 95%CI: 1.16-4.00) during the entire pregnancy, while the null or weaker association was observed at corresponding low (≤ 25th percentile) and medium (> 25th and ≤ 75th percentile) temperature levels. CONCLUSION: This multicity study added new evidence that ambient high temperature may enhance the potential effects of ambient O3 on adverse birth outcomes.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is one of the sequelae of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), and currently, lung transplantation is the only viable treatment option. Hence, other effective treatments are urgently required. We investigated the therapeutic effects of an approved botanical drug, cepharanthine (CEP), in a cell culture model of transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) and bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis rat models both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, CEP and pirfenidone (PFD) suppressed BLM-induced lung tissue inflammation, proliferation of blue collagen fibers, and damage to lung structures in vivo. Furthermore, we also found increased collagen deposition marked by α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and Collagen Type I Alpha 1 (COL1A1), which was significantly alleviated by the addition of PFD and CEP. Moreover, we elucidated the underlying mechanism of CEP against PF in vitro. Various assays confirmed that CEP reduced the viability and migration and promoted apoptosis of myofibroblasts. The expression levels of myofibroblast markers, including COL1A1, vimentin, α-SMA, and Matrix Metallopeptidase 2 (MMP2), were also suppressed by CEP. Simultaneously, CEP significantly suppressed the elevated Phospho-NF-κB p65 (p-p65)/NF-κB p65 (p65) ratio, NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3) levels, and elevated inhibitor of NF-κB Alpha (IκBα) degradation and reversed the progression of PF. Hence, our study demonstrated that CEP prevented myofibroblast activation and treated BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis in a dose-dependent manner by regulating nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB)/ NLRP3 signaling, thereby suggesting that CEP has potential clinical application in pulmonary fibrosis in the future.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the association between maternity formula supplementation and small for gestational age (SGA) status in Chinese newborns. METHODS: Data were from a population-based cross-sectional survey conducted in Shaanxi, Northwest China between August and December 2013. A total of 27 780 women pregnant with singletons and 356 with twins were included in this survey. Information on use of maternity formulas fortified with vitamins, folic acid, pantothenic acid, calcium, iron, zinc, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was collected. SGA was defined as birthweight <10th percentile of fetal growth. Generalized linear models and estimating equation models were used to estimate crude odds ratios (ORs) or adjusted ORs with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for SGA. RESULTS: The rate of maternity formula supplementation during the entire pregnancy was 13.0% in the overall population. There was no significant association between maternal formula supplementation during pregnancy and the risk of total SGA birth (OR: 1.00; 95% CI, 0.90-1.11; P = 0.950). However, maternity formula supplementation during pregnancy was related to a lower risk of SGA for twins (OR: 0.49; 95% CI, 0.31-0.80; P = 0.004), twin A (OR: 0.50; 95% CI, 0.25-0.98; P = 0.045), and twin B (OR: 0.48; 95% CI, 0.25-0.95; P = 0.034). Furthermore, maternity formula supplementation during the first trimester was inversely associated with the risk of SGA birth of twins (OR: 0.32; 95% CI, 0.15-0.65; P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: No significant association was observed between maternity formula supplementation and total SGA birth. However, women supplemented with maternal formula during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, may have a reduced risk of SGA birth of twins.

Background: To examine the association between daily physical activity (PA) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in northwest China. Methods: The data in this analysis were part of the baseline survey of the Regional Ethnic Cohort Study in Northwest China from June 2018 to May 2019 in Shaanxi Province. This study used standardized self-reported total physical activity (continuous and categorical variables) and self-reported outcomes of MACEs. All analyses were conducted using the logistic regression model and stratified by age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and region. The dose-response relationships were assessed with a restricted cubic spline. Results: The average level of total PA was 17.60 MET hours per day (MET-h/d). Every increase of four MET-h/d of total PA was associated with a lower risk of MACEs [adjusted OR = 0.95 (95% CI, 0.93~0.98)]. Compared with participants in the bottom quartile of total PA, a lower risk of MACEs was observed in the top quartile group [≥23.3 MET-h/d, 0.68 (0.55~0.83)]. Stratified analyses showed similar results in males, females, participants over 45 years old, participants in the rural region, and normal weight range participants (BMI < 24 kg/m2). Total participants also observed a dose-response relationship after adjusting for socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. Conclusions: A higher level of PA was associated with a lower MACE risk. Future research should examine the longitudinal association of prospectively measured PA and the risk of MACEs.

Background: Dietary modulation is a primary lifestyle approach for reducing the risk of hypertension. However, evidence of the potential role that a dietary taste preference plays in the risk of hypertension remains limited. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted based on the Shaanxi baseline survey of the Regional Ethnic Cohort Study. We used self-reported salt consumption and intensity preferences for sourness and spiciness to calculate the taste preference score, which was categorized into bland, moderate, and strong. A generalized linear mixed model and quantile regression were performed to estimate associations between taste preferences and hypertension/blood pressure. Results: Among 27,233 adults, 72.2% preferred a moderate taste and 21.4% preferred a strong taste. Compared with a bland taste, a stronger taste preference might be associated with a higher risk of hypertension (adjusted OR for a moderate taste = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.49; adjusted OR for a strong taste = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.15, 1.71; P trend = 0.002), especially in females (adjusted OR for a moderate taste = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.66; adjusted OR for a strong taste = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.32, 1.83; P trend < 0.001). Quantile regression showed that the taste preference was positively associated with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P 5-P 80) in females, with an average increase of 3.31 mmHg for a strong taste (ß = 3.31, P < 0.001) and 1.77 mmHg for a moderate taste (ß = 1.77, P = 0.008). Conclusions: A preference for stronger multitastes of salty, sour, and spicy might be associated with a higher risk of hypertension, especially in females. This relationship possibly occurs through increasing DBP. Dietary modulation with the promotion of a bland taste is encouraged.

To evaluate the relationship between infant age of egg introduction and malnutrition-related growth outcomes in the United States, we analysed secondary data of 1716 mother-child dyads in the Infant Feeding Practices Study II and its Year 6 Follow-Up Study. Malnutrition-related growth outcomes included body mass index z-score (BMIZ), obesity (weight-for-height z-score [WHZ] ≥3 or BMIZ ≥ 2), WHZ, wasting (WHZ < -2), height-for-age z-score (HAZ), and stunting (HAZ < -2). Infant age at egg introduction was analysed as a continuous variable. We used generalised estimating equations to estimate the mean difference in continuous outcomes and relative risk [RR]) for binary outcomes, adjusting for related maternal and child confounders. We also explored interactions with child sex, maternal race/ethnicity, maternal educational level, ever breastfeeding, and formula feeding. In the total sample, a later infant age at egg introduction was associated with a lower mean difference in HAZ (confounder-adjusted mean difference = -0.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.12 to -0.03 per month) and a higher risk of stunting (confounder-adjusted RR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.03-1.33 per month) at 6 years. The associations between infant age at egg introduction and 12-month growth outcomes differed by child sex. Among females but not among males, later introduction of eggs was associated with a lower mean WHZ (-0.06 [-0.12 to 0.00] per month) at 12 months. Later egg introduction during infancy was associated with a lower mean HAZ and a higher risk of stunting in 6-year-old children. Besides this, it was associated with a lower WHZ among females at 12 months.

Objectives: To investigate the association between dietary purine intake and mortality among Chinese adults. Methods: Based on data from the 2004−2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) and the corresponding edition of China Food Composition, the average purine intake per day (mg/day) from 2004 to 2011 was calculated, and the surveyed population was divided into five groups by quintiles. The outcome event and timepoint of concern were defined as death and time, respectively, as reported by family members, recorded until the 2015 survey. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for death. The possibly nonlinear relationship between purine intake and mortality was examined with restricted cubic splines. Results: We included 17,755 subjects, and the average purine intake among them was 355.07 ± 145.32 mg/day. Purine intake was inversely associated with mortality (Ptrend < 0.001). Compared with the lowest quintiles of purine intake, the highest quintiles (HR = 0.60; 95% CI: 0.46, 0.77) showed a significant association with lower mortality. The negative association with mortality was mainly found in plant-derived purine (Ptrend = 0.001) and, weakly, in animal-derived purine (Ptrend = 0.052). In addition, a U-shaped relationship between purine intake and mortality was observed in males; however, there was no statistically significant dose−response relationship in females. Conclusion: Considering the low-purine-intake levels of the Chinese population, we observed a U-shaped relationship between purine intake and mortality in males, but purine intake may not relate to mortality in females. Future studies should investigate the causal relationship between purine intake and disease burden in China.

RESUMO

In this study, we first obtained the complete mitochondrial genome of Aparapoamon similium (Decapoda: Brachyura). The complete mitochondrial genome is 19,236 bp in length and includes 37 typical genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs genes, 2 rRNAs genes, and 1 putative control region). The whole mitochondrial genome is characterized by the apparent AT bias (72.82%). BI and ML phylogenetic analysis based on 67 mitochondrial genomes of Brachyura species show a highly similar topology structure with high bootstrap supported. The results reveal the close relationship between A. similium and Potamiscus motuoense. This study would establish a solid data foundation for further diversification studies.
