BACKGROUND: Despite the high risk of eating disorder (ED)-related attitudes and behaviors among female dancers, targeted scientific dietary regimens are currently inadequate. Time-restricted eating (TRE), a popular intermittent fasting protocol, has been shown to be effective in enhancing body composition and exercise performance in athletes. In this study, TRE was employed as a dietary regimen to improve body composition and exercise performance and address ED attitudes and behaviors in DanceSport dancers. METHODS: Twenty female DanceSport dancers were recruited and divided into two groups: TRE (n = 10) and normal diet (ND) (n = 10). The TRE group consumed their self-selected necessary energy intake exclusively between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. (utilizing a 16-hour fasting and 8-hour eating window) for 6 weeks, while the ND group maintained their regular dieting patterns. The consumption of water, black tea, or coffee without added sugar or milk was not restricted. Physical activity and calorie intake were systematically recorded during the TRE intervention. Body composition, aerobic and anaerobic performance, and ED attitudes and behaviors were assessed before and after the TRE intervention. The trial was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry under the identifier ChiCTR2200063780. RESULTS: The fixed effects tests (p < 0.0001) and estimates for the intercept (p < 0.0001) of hunger level indicated a noticeable effect on the initial state of hunger during TRE. No significant differences were observed in ED attitudes or behaviors (p > 0.05). TRE resulted in a reduction in hip circumference (p = 0.039), fat mass (kg) (p = 0.0004), and body fat percentage (p = 0.0005), with no significant decrease in fat-free mass (p > 0.05). No significant improvement was observed in aerobic performance (p > 0.05). The average power (AP) (p = 0.01) and AP/Body weight ratio (p = 0.003) significantly increased. Additionally, the power drop decreased significantly (p = 0.019). Group-by-time interactions were observed for fat mass (kg) (p = 0.01), body fat percentage (p = 0.035), and AP/Body weight (p = 0.020). CONCLUSION: TRE can be considered a feasible nutritional strategy for DanceSport dancers, facilitating improvements in body composition without compromising aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance or exacerbating ED attitudes and behaviors. Moreover, TRE may facilitate more favorable physiological adaptations, potentially contributing to improved exercise performance.

Polaritons, hybrid light and matter waves, offer a platform for subwavelength on-chip light manipulation. Recent works on planar refraction and focusing of polaritons all rely on heterogeneous components with different refractive indices. A fundamental question, thus, arises whether it is possible to configure two-dimensional monolithic polariton lenses based on a single medium. Here, we design and fabricate a type of monolithic polariton lens by directly sculpting an individual hyperbolic van der Waals crystal. The in-plane polariton focusing through sculptured step-terraces is triggered by geometry-induced symmetry breaking of momentum matching in polariton refractions. We show that the monolithic polariton lenses can be robustly tuned by the rise of van der Waals terraces and their curvatures, achieving a subwavelength focusing resolution down to 10% of the free-space light wavelength. Fusing with transformation optics, monolithic polariton lenses with gradient effective refractive indices, such as Luneburg lenses and Maxwell's fisheye lenses, are expected by sculpting polaritonic structures with gradually varied depths. Our results bear potential in planar subwavelength lenses, integrated optical circuits, and photonic chips.

Background: Saccharum spp. is the primary source of sugar and plays a significant role in global renewable bioenergy. Sugarcane bacilliform virus (SCBV) is one of the most important viruses infecting sugarcane, causing severe yield losses and quality degradation. It is of great significance to reveal the pathogenesis of SCBV and resistance breeding. However, little is known about the viral virulence factors or RNA silencing suppressors and the molecular mechanism of pathogenesis. Methods: To systematically investigate the functions of the unknown protein P2 encoded by SCBV ORF2. Phylogenetic analysis was implemented to infer the evolutionary relationship between the P2 of SCBV and other badnaviruses. The precise subcellular localization of P2 was verified in the transient infiltrated Nicotiana benthamiana epidermal mesophyll cells and protoplasts using the Laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). The post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS) and transcriptional gene silencing (TGS) RNA silencing suppressor activity of P2 was analyzed, respectively. Furthermore, restriction digestion and RT-qPCR assays were conducted to verify the probable mechanism of P2 on repressing DNA methylation. To explore the pathogenicity of P2, a potato virus X-based viral vector was used to heterologously express SCBV P2 and the consequent H2O2 accumulation was detected by the 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB) staining method. Results: Phylogenetic analysis shows that SCBV has no obvious sequence similarity and low genetic relatedness to Badnavirus and Tungrovirus representatives. LSCM studies show that P2 is localized in both the cytoplasm and nucleus. Moreover, P2 is shown to be a suppressor of PTGS and TGS, which can not only repress ssRNA-induced gene silencing but also disrupt the host RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathway. In addition, P2 can trigger an oxidative burst and cause typical hypersensitive-like response (HLR) necrosis in systemic leaves of N. benthamiana when expressed by PVX. Overall, our results laid a foundation for deciphering the molecular mechanism of SCBV pathogenesis and made progress for resistance breeding.

Hydrogels are widely applied in the flexible wearable electronic devices field owing to their skin-like stretchability, superb biocompatibility, and high conductivity retention under mechanical deformations. Nevertheless, hydrogels are prone to freezing at low temperatures and losing water at high temperatures, which seriously limits their practical applications. Herein, a binary solvent system of ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride) and water was prepared to endow the ionic hydrogel high ionic conductivity (0.28 S m-1 at 25 °C), high transparency (94.26%), and superior freezing tolerance (-50 °C). The multiple hydrogen bonds formed among polymer chains, water, and ionic liquids significantly improved the mechanical properties of the ionic hydrogel, enabling excellent tensile properties (strain >1800%) and durability (1000 times at 100% strain). Moreover, the ionic hydrogel was further assembled into a dual-response sensor, which exhibited satisfactory sensitivity to both tension (gauge factor = 2.15 at 200% strain) and temperature (temperature coefficient of resistance = -1.845%/°C) and can be applied for human motion and body temperature monitoring. This study provides a versatile method for preparing multifunctional hydrogels with a wide range of applications and lays the groundwork for human movement detection and smart health care.

An increasing number of studies reveal the deleterious effects of isoflurane (Iso) exposure during pregnancy on offspring cognition. However, no effective therapeutic strategy for Iso-induced deleterious effects has been well developed. Angelicin exerts an anti-inflammatory effect on neurons and glial cells. This study investigated the roles and mechanism of action of angelicin in Iso-induced neurotoxicity in vitro and in vivo. After exposing C57BL/6 J mice on embryonic day 15 (E15) to Iso for 3 and 6 h, respectively, neonatal mice on embryonic day 18 (E18) displayed obvious anesthetic neurotoxicity, which was revealed by the elevation of cerebral inflammatory factors and blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability and cognitive dysfunction in mice. Angelicin treatment could not only significantly reduce the Iso-induced embryonic inflammation and BBB disruption but also improve the cognitive dysfunction of offspring mice. Iso exposure resulted in an increase of carbonic anhydrase (CA) 4 and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) expression at both mRNA and protein levels in vascular endothelial cells and mouse brain tissue collected from neonatal mice on E18. Remarkably, the Iso-induced upregulation of CA4 and AQP4 expression could be partially reversed by angelicin treatment. Moreover, GSK1016790A, an AQP4 agonist, was used to confirm the role of AQP4 in the protective effect of angelicin. Results showed that GSK1016790A abolished the therapeutic effect of angelicin on Iso-induced inflammation and BBB disruption in the embryonic brain and on the cognitive function of offspring mice. In conclusion, angelicin may serve as a potential therapeutic for Iso-induced neurotoxicity in neonatal mice by regulating the CA4/AQP4 pathway.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is increasingly used to manage type 2 diabetes and its nonpharmacological interventions are showing potential for preventing type 2 diabetes. This study mainly reviews relevant research. The most mentioned non-drug treatments for preventing type 2 diabetes in TCM are healthy diet, physical activity, emotional therapy, and acupuncture. In most studies, blood glucose status in patients with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes was significantly improved after TCM non-drug interventions, and there was no significant difference between the adverse effect of TCM and control groups or other intervention groups, while the methodological quality of the clinical trials involving TCM generally kept a low level. The effectiveness of TCM in preventing type 2 diabetes has yet to be validated in large randomized controlled trials and the underlying mechanism also needs further exploration.

PURPOSE: To compare the effective optical zone (EOZ) and centration in eyes with high myopia after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) using a novel method. METHODS: Forty eyes of 40 consecutive patients with high myopia scheduled for SMILE or FS-LASIK were enrolled in the study. The EOZ, optical zone decentration, and corneal aberrations were analyzed using Scheimpflug imaging. These values were then analyzed and compared between the two procedures 6 months after surgery. RESULTS: The mean EOZ diameter for SMILE (4.41 ± 0.14 mm) was larger than that for FS-LASIK (4.24 ± 0.28 mm; P = .002), corresponding to reductions of 1.60 ± 0.11 and 1.71 ± 0.21 mm, respectively, compared with the programmed optical zone (POZ) (P = .007). Moreover, the total decentration for SMILE (0.33 ± 0.12 mm) was greater than that for FS-LASIK (0.27 ± 0.15 mm; P = .020). The induction of spherical aberration (SA) was lower with SMILE than with FS-LASIK (P = .007). CONCLUSIONS: A larger EOZ and less SA were observed after SMILE than after FS-LASIK in eyes with high myopia. [J Refract Surg. 2023;39(11):736-740.].

The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypotensive effect and optimal protocol of inspiratory muscle resistance training (IMST). Randomized controlled trials using IMST to lower blood pressure (BP) were retrieved from 12 databases as of July 2022. A meta-analysis of BP and heart rate variability (HRV) was performed and a trial sequence analysis was performed using trial sequential analysis (TSA) software. Twelve articles (n = 386 participants) from five countries were included, with a mean quality score of 5.83. IMST achieved significant results in reducing systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure (-7.93 [-12.08, -3.78]; -3.80 [-6.08, -1.53]; -4.90 [-13.76, 3.96]). Furthermore, TSA has shown that the findings for systolic and diastolic BP are conclusive. Finally, considerable variation remained between studies when analyzing HRV. The overall hypotensive effect of IMST was demonstrated by the TSA and was well tolerated in different populations. Of these, two interventions, high resistance or low resistance combined with slow breathing, showed the best efficacy under an 8-week exercise intervention. In addition, the process of lowering BP by modulating sympathetic vagal activity has not been further confirmed in this study. Future long-term interventions, especially those over 3 months, are needed to observe the prolonged antihypertensive effects and modulatory mechanisms; controlling for variables such as respiratory rate and executing more rigorous studies to further explore antihypertensive options.

Preventing neuronal death after ischemic stroke (IS) is crucial for neuroprotective treatment, yet current management options are limited. Enriched environment (EE) is an effective intervention strategy that promotes the recovery of neurological function after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Ferroptosis has been identified as one of the mechanisms of neuronal death during IS, and inhibiting ferroptosis can reduce cerebral I/R injury. Our previous research has demonstrated that EE reduced ferroptosis by inhibiting lipid peroxidation, but the underlying mechanism still needs to be investigated. This study aims to explore the potential molecular mechanisms by which EE modulates iron metabolism to reduce ferroptosis. The experimental animals were randomly divided into four groups based on the housing environment and the procedure the animals received: the sham-operated + standard environment (SSE) group, the sham-operated + enriched environment (SEE) group, the ischemia/reperfusion + standard environment (ISE) group, and the ischemia/reperfusion + enriched environment (IEE) group. The results showed that EE reduced IL-6 expression during cerebral I/R injury, hence reducing JAK2-STAT3 pathway activation and hepcidin expression. Reduced hepcidin expression led to decreased DMT1 expression and increased FPN1 expression in neurons, resulting in lower neuronal iron levels and alleviated ferroptosis. In addition, EE also reduced the expression of TfR1 in neurons. Our research suggested that EE played a neuroprotective role by modulating iron metabolism and reducing neuronal ferroptosis after cerebral I/R injury, which might be achieved by inhibiting inflammatory response and down-regulating hepcidin expression.

Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV), a member of the genus Polerovirus in the family Luteoviridae, causes severe damage and represents a great threat to sugarcane cultivation and sugar industry development. In this study, inoculation of Nicotiana benthamiana plants with a potato virus X (PVX)-based vector carrying the SCYLV P0 gene induced typical mosaic, leaf rolling symptoms and was associated with a hypersensitive-like response (HLR) necrosis symptom, which is accompanied with a systemic burst of H2O2 and also leads to higher PVX viral genome accumulation levels. Our results demonstrate that SCYLV P0 is a pathogenicity determinant and plays important roles in disease development. To further explore its function in pathogenic processes, a yeast two-hybrid assay was performed to screen the putative P0-interacting host factors. The recombinant plasmid pGBKT7-P0 was constructed as a bait and transformed into the yeast strain Y2HGold. The ROC22 cultivar (an important parental resource of the main cultivar in China) cDNA prey library was constructed and screened by co-transformation with the P0 bait. We identified 28 potential interacting partners including those involved in the optical signal path, plant growth and development, transcriptional regulation, host defense response, and viral replication. To our knowledge, this is the first time we have reported the host proteins interacting with the P0 virulence factor encoded by sugarcane yellow leaf virus. This study not only provides valuable insights into elucidating the molecular mechanism of the pathogenicity of SCYLV, but also sheds light on revealing the probable new pathogenesis of Polerovirus in the future.

Photonic crystals (PhCs) are a kind of artificial structures that can mold the flow of light at will. Polaritonic crystals (PoCs) made from polaritonic media offer a promising route to controlling nano-light at the subwavelength scale. Conventional bulk PhCs and recent van der Waals PoCs mainly show highly symmetric excitation of Bloch modes that closely rely on lattice orders. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a type of hyperbolic PoCs with configurable and low-symmetry deep-subwavelength Bloch modes that are robust against lattice rearrangement in certain directions. This is achieved by periodically perforating a natural crystal α-MoO3 that hosts in-plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons. The mode excitation and symmetry are controlled by the momentum matching between reciprocal lattice vectors and hyperbolic dispersions. We show that the Bloch modes and Bragg resonances of hyperbolic PoCs can be tuned through lattice scales and orientations while exhibiting robust properties immune to lattice rearrangement in the hyperbolic forbidden directions. Our findings provide insights into the physics of hyperbolic PoCs and expand the categories of PhCs, with potential applications in waveguiding, energy transfer, biosensing and quantum nano-optics.

Ionogels with self-healing properties have become more and more desirable because they can improve the reliability, safety, and fatigue-resistant performance of flexible devices. However, the self-healing property of ionogels is usually susceptible to water molecules, and the application of ionogel sensors is limited to the atmospheric environment. Inspired by gelatinous jellyfish, herein, an underwater self-healing ionogel was prepared via one-step photoinitiated polymerization of acrylic acid 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ester and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) in a hydrophobic ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIm][TFSI]). The dynamic physical interactions (hydrogen bonding and ion-dipole interactions) endowed the ionogel with remarkable transparency, underwater self-healing (up to 96%), toughness (3.93 MJ m-3), and underwater adhesion. And the cross-linking ionogel could be green recycled by ethanol for further application. Especially, the ionogel-based sensor presented excellent strain and pressure sensing sensitivity, rapid responsiveness (140 ms), and ultrastability. The ionogel could be further assembled into an optical camouflage sensor to detect and distinguish different human motions in real time with high sensitivity, stability, and repeatability, as well as for underwater electrocardiography monitoring wirelessly. This ionogel provides a promising strategy for the development of underwater self-healing sensors.

Salinity is poisonous to various plant physiological processes and poses an increasingly severe threat to agricultural productivity worldwide. As a tactic to mitigate this issue, the hunt for salt-tolerance genes and pathways is intensifying. The low-molecular-weight proteins known as metallothioneins (MTs) can effectively reduce salt toxicity in plants. In seeking concrete evidence of its function under salt stress conditions, a unique salt-responsive metallothionein gene, LcMT3, was isolated from the extremely salt-enduring Leymus chinensis and heterologously characterized in Escherichia coli (E. coli), yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), as well as Arabidopsis thaliana. Overexpression of LcMT3 imparted resistance to salt in E. coli cells and yeast, while the development of control cells was completely inhibited. Besides, transgenic plants expressing LcMT3 exhibited significantly enhanced salinity tolerance. They had higher germination rates and longer roots than their nontransgenic counterparts during NaCl tolerance. For several physiological indices of salt tolerance, transgenic lines reduced the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), relative conductivity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in comparison to nontransgenic Arabidopsis. They also possessed increased concentrations of proline (Pro), relative water content, chlorophyll content, coupled with three more active antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT)). Transgenic plants also accumulated less Na+ and maintained a lower Na+/K+ ratio than control, which can be attributable to the transgene's regulatory effect on transporter proteins such as salt overly sensitive (SOS) and Na+/H+ antiporter (NHX1), as demonstrated by qPCR experiments. Collectively, LcMT3 could have a vital function in salinity resistance and be an essential candidate protein for abiotic stress.

Purpose: To explore the mechanisms relating the gut microbiome (GM) to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), as they remain unclear. GM taxa that appear to act within the gut-retina axis may affect the risk of AMD. Methods: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 196 GM taxa were obtained from the MiBioGen consortium, and a Mendelian randomization (MR) study was carried out to estimate the causality between GM taxa and AMD (defined as an endpoint based on ICD-9 and ICD-10). Using the data from the FinnGen consortium (6157 patients and 288,237 controls), we explored the GM taxa for causality and verified the results at the replication stage based on the MRC-IEU consortium (3553 cases and 147,089 controls). Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was the main method used to analyze causality, and the MR results were verified using heterogeneity tests and pleiotropy tests. Results: According to the MR results, order Rhodospirillales (P = 3.38 × 10-2), family Victivallaceae (P = 3.14 × 10-2), family Rikenellaceae (P = 3.58 × 10-2), genus Slackia (P = 3.15 × 10-2), genus Faecalibacterium (P = 3.01 × 10-2), genus Bilophila (P = 1.11 × 10-2), and genus Candidatus Soleaferrea (P = 2.45 × 10-2) were suggestively associated with AMD. In the replication stage, only order Rhodospirillales (P = 0.03) passed validation. The heterogeneity (P > 0.05) and pleiotropy (P > 0.05) tests in two stages confirmed the robustness of the MR results. Conclusions: We confirmed that order Rhodospirillales influenced the risk of AMD based on the gut-retina axis, providing new impetus for the development of the GM as an intervention to prevent the occurrence and development of AMD.

BACKGROUND: Vascular remodelling is an essential pathophysiological state in many circulatory diseases. Abnormal vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) behaviour leads to neointimal formation and may eventually results in major adverse cardiovascular events. The C1q/TNF-related protein (C1QTNF) family is closely associated with cardiovascular disease. Notably, C1QTNF4 has unique two C1q domains. However, the role of C1QTNF4 in vascular diseases remains unclear. METHODS: C1QTNF4 expression was detected in human serum and artery tissues using ELISA and multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) staining. Scratch assay, transwell assay and confocal microscopy were used to investigate C1QTNF4 effects on VSMC migration. EdU incorporation, MTT assay and cell counting experiment revealed C1QTNF4 effects on VSMC proliferation. C1QTNF4-transgenic, C1QTNF4-/- and AAV9-mediated VSMC-specific C1QTNF4 restoration C1QTNF4-/- mouse and rat disease models were generated. RNA-seq, quantitative real-time PCR, western blot, mIF, proliferation and migration assays were used to investigate the phenotypic characteristics and underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: Serum C1QTNF4 levels were decreased in patients with arterial stenosis. C1QTNF4 shows colocalisation with VSMC in human renal arteries. In vitro, C1QTNF4 inhibits VSMC proliferation and migration and alters VSMC phenotype. In vivo, an adenovirus-infected rat balloon injury model, C1QTNF4-transgenic and C1QTNF4-/- mouse wire-injury models with or without VSMC-specific C1QTNF4 restoration were established to mimic the VSMC repair and remodelling. The results show that C1QTNF4 decreases intimal hyperplasia. Especially, we displayed the rescue effect of C1QTNF4 in vascular remodelling using AAV vectors. Next, transcriptome analysis of artery tissue identified the potential mechanism. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirm that C1QTNF4 ameliorates neointimal formation and maintains vascular morphology by downregulating the FAK/PI3K/AKT pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that C1QTNF4 is a novel inhibitor of VSMC proliferation and migration that acts by downregulating the FAK/PI3K/AKT pathway, thus protecting blood vessels from abnormal neointima formation. These results provide new insights into promising potent treatments for vascular stenosis diseases.

Aldosterone, as a mineralocorticoid of adrenal origin, has effects that are not limited to the urinary tract. As an important regulator in Vasoactive hormone pathways, aldosterone may play an effect in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR) through the regulation of oxidative stress, vascular regulation, and inflammatory mechanisms. This implies that mineralocorticoids, including aldosterone, have great potential and value for the diagnosis and treatment of DR. Because early studies did not focus on the intrinsic association between mineralocorticoids and DR, targeted research is still in its infancy and there are still many obstacles to its application in the clinical setting. Recent studies have improved the understanding of the effects of aldosterone on DR, and we review them with the aim of exploring possible mechanisms for the treatment and prevention of DR.

Background: We aimed to address which interventions best control blood pressure (BP) and delay disease progression in prehypertension and to give recommendations for the best option following a quality rating. Methods: A Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to assess the effect of the intervention on BP reduction, delaying hypertension progression and final outcome, with subgroup analyses for time and ethnicity. Recommendations for interventions were finally based on cumulative ranking probabilities and CINeMA. Results: From 22,559 relevant articles, 101 eligible randomized controlled trial articles (20,176 prehypertensive subjects) were included and 30 pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions were evaluated. Moderate-quality evidence demonstrated that angiotensin II receptor blockers, aerobic exercise (AE), and dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) lowered systolic blood pressure (SBP). For lowering diastolic blood pressure (DBP), AE combined with resistance exercise (RE) or AE alone provided high quality evidence, with calcium channel blockers, lifestyle modification (LSM) combined with drug providing moderate quality evidence. LSM produced the best BP lowering effect at 12 months and beyond of intervention. In Asians, TCD bubble was moderate quality evidence for lowering SBP and RE may have had a BP lowering effect in Caucasians. No recommendation can be given for delaying the progression of hypertension and reducing mortality outcomes because of low to very low quality of evidence. Conclusion: AE combined RE are preferentially recommended for BP control in prehypertension, followed by DASH. Long-term BP control is preferred to LSM. Asians and Caucasians add TCD bubble and RE to this list as potentially effective interventions. INTRODUCTION: To compare the visual outcomes of astigmatism correction with implantable collamer lens (ICL) surgery with low-to-moderate astigmatism through a steep-meridian corneal relaxing incision (SM-CRI) and non-steep-meridian corneal relaxing incision (NSM-CRI). METHODS: Seventy eyes of 70 patients with myopia and myopic astigmatism who underwent ICL V4c implantation were classified into two groups: SM-CRI and NSM-CRI. Refractive outcomes and vector analysis were evaluated preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS: At the postoperative 6 month visit, all participants in both groups achieved an uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 20/20 or better. The difference vector (DV) showed that the residual astigmatism in the SM-CRI group was much smaller than that in the NSM-CRI group (P = 0.021), and the correction index (CI) was 0.84 ± 0.30 and 0.67 ± 0.35 for the SM-CRI and NSM-CRI groups, respectively, with a significant statistical difference (P = 0.013). Approximately 71% of eyes in the SM-CRI group had an angle of error (AE) within ± 15°, whereas 55% of eyes in the NSM-CRI group were within that range. The absolute mean AE was 10.13 ± 14.57° in the SM-CRI group, compared with 23.88 ± 28.22° in the NSM-CRI group (P = 0.038). CONCLUSION: SM-CRI can alleviate corneal astigmatism and decrease the cylindrical diopter of the ICL, thus improving postoperative visual quality compared with NSM-CRI.

The mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis (AS) that seriously affect human health, such as those involved in endothelial cell injury and monocyte/macrophage aggregation and infiltration, have not been fully elucidated. To investigate these processes, we established human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) injured by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) to mimic AS in vitro. Apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE-/-) C57BL/6 mice were fed with a high-cholesterol diet to establish an AS model in vivo. We detected HUVEC apoptosis, and apoptosis-related proteins by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide and lactate dehydrogenase, flow cytometry, and Western blot assays, respectively, and we observed monocytes (THP-1 cells) adhering to HUVECs. Furthermore, miR-147a and its downstream target gene ZEB2 (zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 2) were predicted by bioinformatics analysis to be involved in AS, and their correlation was confirmed by several experiments. We determined the localization of miR-147a and ZEB2 within macrophages of AS mice by in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence. Atherosclerotic plaques in whole aortas were detected by histology observation. miR-147a attenuated adherence of monocytes to HUVECs and the upregulation of mononuclear chemotactic adhesion receptors in THP-1 cells induced by ox-LDL-injured HUVEC supernatants through directly downregulating ZEB2 levels. Moreover, miR-147a influenced M1/M2 macrophage polarization from THP-1 cells and the roles of their supernatants (THP-1 cells) in HUVEC apoptosis. miR-147a targeted ZEB2 to impact lipid accumulation and atherosclerotic plaque formation through regulating M1/M2 polarization and macrophage adhesion in AS mice. In summary, miR-147a attenuates ox-LDL-induced adherence of monocytes to HUVECs and modulates atherosclerotic plaque formation and stability through targeting ZEB2 during AS.
