RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this paper is to investigate the use of Potentilla bifurca in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the improvement effect of 3T3-L1 adipocytes under insulin resistance (IR) with the compounds of Potentilla bifurca. RESULTS: The Potentilla bifurca can significantly improve the glycolipid metabolism disorder in 3T3-L1 adipocytes (the effect of MC compounds is very significant). It can improve insulin resistance by enhancing the glucose uptake of 3T3-L1 adipocytes, decreasing IL-6 content, and regulating the content of p-Akt/Akt, IKKß, and p-NF-κBp65/NF-κBp65 in the IRS/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Studies have shown that Potentilla bifurca has the ability to regulate glucolipid metabolism and can be used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Abscopal effect of radiotherapy refers to a clinical phenomenon that is characterized by the eradication of distant metastatic tumors following localized irradiation. Reports on the abscopal effect following pure radiotherapy have been relatively rare. CASE REPORT: Herein, we reported a 70-year-old male patient, who has been subjected to swelling and pain in the left neck. Computed tomography examination presented a metastatic lymph node of the left cervical and an intra-abdominal mass which was located in hepatogastric space, upward of the pancreatic head. Histopathology of the left cervical lymph node further ensured a poorly-moderately differentiated form of squamous cell carcinoma. But the primary origin was not defined. This patient received radiotherapy on the metastatic lymph nodes of the left cervical (dose: 60 Gray in 30 fractions) only. After treatment, the pain in the left neck dramatically improved and the swelling of the radiation exposure site diminished gradually. Computed tomography examination also confirmed that the abdominal mass was significantly reduced. CONCLUSIONS: The abscopal effect, in this case, may help us to get a better understanding of the impact of radiotherapy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the current research status and trends of publications on relapsed/refractory Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (r/r NHL) using CiteSpace software and to know which centers and authors we should follow in the first place while doing research on r/r NHL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core collection database, and CiteSpace (5.5.R5) software was used to analyze the authors, institutions, countries, and keywords. RESULTS: A total of 567 publications from 2009 to 2021 were retrieved, and the most fertile authors, institutions, nationalities and keywords in the field of r/r NHL were identified. Pier Luigi Zinzani team, Kensei Tobinai team, Andre Goy team, and Julie M. Vose team are recognized the main research teams in this field. USA makes the greatest contribution having research funds for r/r NHL. Key cluster areas of research include mantle cell lymphoma, pathway, lymphoma, relapse, pixantrone, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, romidepsin, relapsed, T-cell lymphoma, and activated T cells. According to the keywords' timeline, the research trends of r/r NHL changed from bone marrow transplantation, radioimmunotherapy, chemotherapy to novel target drugs (like ibritumomab tiuxetan, inhibitor) and criteria EBM. CONCLUSIONS: The bibliometric study provides insights into hotspots and trends in the field of r/r NHL in the past 12 years. It serves us to extract useful information from complex data and provide information for clinicians and researchers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Reciprocal age-related impairments in physical and cognitive functioning have been termed 'cognitive frailty', which is associated with adverse health outcomes and is a potential target for preventing or delaying the onset of disability in older people. However, cognitive frailty as currently defined is challenging to diagnose. To facilitate earlier diagnosis and intervention, we conducted this study to develop and validate a simple evidence-based instrument to identify community-dwelling elders at risk of cognitive frailty. DESIGN: Retrospective analyses of data from the I-Lan Longitudinal Aging Study (ILAS) to develop a prediction model, and from the Longitudinal Aging Study of Taipei (LAST) for external validation. SETTING: Community-dwelling adults from Taipei City, New Taipei City and Yilan (I-Lan) County, Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: 1271 community residents ≥65 years old, without impaired global cognition or dependency for activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living. MEASUREMENTS: Demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, medical history, Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Functional Autonomy Measuring System, Functional Assessment Staging Test, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, handgrip strength, 6-metre walk speed. METHODS: Baseline characteristics of groups with/without cognitive frailty were analyzed and factors differing significantly in univariate analysis input to binary logistic regression to develop a cognitive frailty risk (CFR) score. RESULTS: The prevalence of cognitive frailty was 15.8% overall; ILAS 21.4%, LAST 8.4%. Predictors of CFR comprised: age ≥75 years; female sex; waist circumference ≥90 cm (male), ≥80 cm (female); calf circumference <33 cm (male), <32 cm (female); memory deficits; and diabetes mellitus. CFR ≥5/14 had sensitivity of 70%, specificity of 60%, and predictive accuracy of 72%. CONCLUSIONS: A CFR score based on simple history-taking and anthropometric measurements integrates age, sex, cardiometabolic risk, memory deficits, sarcopenia, and nutrition, with validated predictive accuracy, and could be performed easily in community settings to identify seniors with cognitive frailty for appropriate interventions.

RESUMO

The full-length complementary DNA of two genes related to vertebrate albinism, the tyrosinase gene tyr and tyrosinase-related protein 1 gene tyrp1, were cloned and analysed from normal and albino yellow catfish Tachysurus fulvidraco. The open reading frames (ORF) of tyr and tyrp1 encode putative peptides of 533 and 526 amino acids (amino-acid), both of which possess two conserved copper binding sites. The homologous identities of deduced amino-acid sequences showed that both Tyr and Tyrp1 of T. fulvidraco share considerable similarity with that of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. Both tyr and tyrp1 were expressed in a wide range of adult tissues. Tyr gene had the highest expression level in the brain of both normal and albino T. fulvidraco. Tyrp1 had the highest expression level in the skin of normal groups, and the fin of albino groups. The messenger (m)RNA expressions of tyr and tyrp1 were detectable at different early developmental stages and varied with embryonic and larval growth. Tyr and tyrp1 mRNA have obvious tissue specificity both in normal and albino T. fulvidraco and higher expression levels were detected in the normal group revealing that tyr and tyrp1 may have an important role in pigmentation. These results will provide useful data for understanding the molecular mechanism of melanin formation and the occurrence of albinism in T. fulvidraco.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of frailty and the associated multimorbidity and functional impairments among community-dwelling middle-aged and elderly people in Taiwan. DESIGN: a cross-sectional study. SETTING: communities in I-Lan County of Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: 1839 community-dwelling people aged 50 years and older. INTERVENTION: None. MEASUREMENTS: Frailty defined by Fried's criteria, Charlson's comorbidity index (CCI), Functional Autonomy Measurement System (SMAF), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Mini-Nutrition Assessment (MNA), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Short Form-12 quality of life questionnaire. RESULTS: Overall, 1839 subjects (mean age: 63.9±9.3 years, 47.5% males) participated in this study and men were more likely to have higher educational level, more smoking and alcohol drinking habit. The prevalence of frailty was 6.8% in this study, while pre-frailty was 40.5% and 53.7% of all participants were robust. Compared to subjects with different frailty status, age, education year, alcohol drinking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, CCI, walking speed, handgrip strength, score of SMAF, CES-D, MNA, MMSE, quality of life were significantly different between groups (P all< 0.05). Older age, poorer physical function, poorer cognitive function, poorer nutritional status, more depressive symptoms, higher CCI and poorer quality of life were all independently associated with frailty. CONCLUSIONS: Frailty was not simply a geriatric syndrome, but the combination of multiple geriatric syndromes. Further study is needed to evaluate the clinical benefits of intervention programs for community-dwelling middle-aged and older people to reverse frailty and its associated functional impairments.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition and its impact on mortality, functional decline and cognitive impairment among elder residents in long-term care settings. DESIGNS: A prospective cohort study. SETTINGS: Two veteran homes in Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1,248 male residents aged equal or more than 65 years. MEASUREMENTS: Charlson's comorbidity index (CCI), Minimum data set (MDS), resident assessment protocols (RAP), Activity of daily living-Hierarchy scale, Cognitive Performance Scale, MDS Social engagement scale. RESULTS: The mean age of participants is 83.1 ± 5.1 years, and the prevalence of malnutrition was 6.1%. Inadequate dietary content (57.9%) and unintentional weight loss (31.6%) account for the majority of malnutrition identified by MDS tool. Higher 18-month mortality rate (25% vs. 14.2%), higher baseline CCI (median 1 vs. 0), and higher baseline sum of RAP triggers (median 8.5 vs. 5) were noted among residents with malnutrition. Furthermore, malnutrition was shown predictive for functional decline (OR: 3.096, 95% CI: 1.715-5.587) and potential cognitive improvement (OR: 2.469, 95% CI: 1.188-5.128) among survivors after adjustment for age, body mass index and CCI. CONCLUSION: Malnutrition among elder men residing in veteran homes was associated with multimorbidities and higher care complexity, and was predictive for mortality and functional decline.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been reported to be associated with cognitive decline and dementia, little was known about late-life MetS and cognitive decline among older old population. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of MetS and cognitive decline among men aged 75 and over in Taiwan. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study which recruited men aged 75 years and older with intact cognitive function living in the Banciao Veterans Home, a retirement community for veterans in northern Taiwan. All participants received complete history taking, physical examinations, global cognitive tests and laboratory tests. Cognitive status was re-evaluated one year after enrollment to evaluate the role of MetS to cognitive decline in this study population. RESULTS: Overall, 338 people participated in the study and 62 of them were excluded due to low baseline MMSE score, and the remaining 276 people (mean age: 82.4±4.2 years) were enrolled for study. The prevalence of MetS and annual cognitive decline were 22.5% and 15.6%, respectively. During the follow-up period, 9 (3.3%) participants died, 229(83.0%) complete the study. Subjects with cognitive decline were older and had lower serum levels of serum total cholesterol. Multivariate logistic regression showed that older age (OR:1.13, 95% C.I.: 1.01-1.25, P=0.026) and central obesity (OR: 4.19, 95% CI: 1.26-13.91, P=0.019) were independent risk factors for cognitive decline; and MetS defined by Adult Treatment Panel III was a protective factor (OR: 0.20, 95% CI: 0.04-0.94, P=0.041). The protective effect of MetS remained the same when MetS was defined by the criteria of International Diabetes Federation. CONCLUSIONS: Age and central obesity were significant risk factors of cognitive decline, but late-life MetS, however defined, had protective effect on cognitive function. Further investigation is needed to clarify the possible mechanism of MetS and cognitive function in older adults.

RESUMO

A new scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging technique using high-order Laue zones (named HOLZ-STEM), a diffraction contrast which has been strenuously avoided or minimized in traditional STEM imaging, can be used to obtain the additional 1D periodic information along the electron propagation axis without sacrificing atomic resolution in the lateral (2D) dimension. HOLZ-STEM has been demonstrated to resolve the 3D long-range Na ordering of Na0.71CoO2. Direct evidence of spiral-like Na-trimer chains twisting along the c axis is unambiguously established in real space.

RESUMO

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation plays a role in atherosclerosis; therefore the lower the formation of oxidative LDL (oxLDL), the lower the occurrence of coronary heart diseases (CHD). Mulberry, the fruit of Morus alba L., is used effectively in Chinese medicines for prevention of CHD. However, the mechanism of this action is unclear. Two extracts, MWEs (mulberry water extracts) and MACs (mulberry anthocyanin-rich extracts), which exhibit antioxidative and anti-atherosclerogensis abilities in vitro. Data showed that MWEs and MACs were able to inhibit (P<0.05) the relative electrophoretic mobility (REM), ApoB fragmentation, and thiobarbituric acid reaction substances (TBARS) formation in Cu2+ -mediated oxidation LDL. MWEs and MACs also had the ability of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging for reducing the formation of free radicals mediated by copper ions. Furthermore, we observed that MWEs and MACs could decrease (P<0.05) macrophage death induced by oxLDL. In addition, the MWEs and MACs also could inhibit (P<0.05) the formation of foam cells. Both MWEs and MACs showed a great ability of scavenging radicals, inhibition of LDL oxidation, and decrease in atherogenic stimuli in macrophages, while the efficacy of MACs is 10-fold greater than that of MWEs. It also demonstrated that anthocyanin components in mulberry extracts were regarded as the prevention of atherosclerosis.

RESUMO

A nurse, 27, primary sterility for 5 years, had normal menstruation, normal size of uterus anterior. HSG: Rt. tube was not visible, Lt. tube slightly enlarged at ampulla. Ovaries were over-stimulated by clomiphene, HMG and hCG.8 ova were taken through vaginal aspiration under B-mode ultrasound scanning. Direct introduction of ova and washed sperms simultaneously into the uterus on Sept. 19, 1991 resulted in successful single pregnancy up to 36(+1) weeks. A 2 250 g normal baby boy was delivered on May 15, 1992 spontaneously. The base and prospect of this manoeuver are discussed with a reference to Craft's procedure.

RESUMO

A method has been developed for the determination of nadolol in biological samples by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorimetric detection. The method has been applied to plasma, serum and urine samples, which are prepared by extraction with diethyl ether-dichloromethane (5:2,v/v), evaporation of the organic solvent, and dissolution of the resultant residue in the chromatographic eluent. The sample is then subjected to chromatography on a C(18)-silica column, with an eluent of water-acetonitrile-triethylamine (800:200:1,v/v) adjusted to pH 3.0 with orthophosphoric acid. A single point external standard is used for quantitation. The working ranges were 1-400 ng/ml for plasma/serum, and 0.1-40 mug/ml for urine, although a detection limit of 0.1 ng/ml appears to be readily attainable. The sample size was 0.5 ml, and for both types of sample the method showed good correlation with a previously published fluorimetric method (for plasma, r = 0.9544, n = 70; for urine, r = 0.9919, n = 35).
