RESUMO

The role of tropical forests in the global carbon budget remains controversial, as carbon emissions from deforestation are highly uncertain. This high uncertainty arises from the use of either fixed forest carbon stock density or maps generated from satellite-based optical reflectance with limited sensitivity to biomass to generate accurate estimates of emissions from deforestation. New space missions aiming to accurately map the carbon stock density rely on direct measurements of the spatial structures of forests using lidar and radar. We found that lost forests are special cases, and their spatial structures can be directly measured by combining archived data acquired before and after deforestation by space missions principally aimed at measuring topography. Thus, using biomass mapping, we obtained new estimates of carbon loss from deforestation ahead of forthcoming space missions. Here, using a high-resolution map of forest loss and the synergy of radar and lidar to estimate the aboveground biomass density of forests, we found that deforestation in the 2000s in Latin America, one of the severely deforested regions, mainly occurred in forests with a significantly lower carbon stock density than typical mature forests. Deforestation areas with carbon stock densities lower than 20.0, 50.0, and 100.0 Mg C/ha accounted for 42.1%, 62.0%, and 83.3% of the entire deforested area, respectively. The average carbon stock density of lost forests was only 49.13 Mg C/ha, which challenges the current knowledge on the carbon stock density of lost forests (with a default value 100 Mg C/ha according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Tier 1 estimates, or approximately 112 Mg C/ha used in other studies). This is demonstrated over both the entire region and the footprints of the spaceborne lidar. Consequently, our estimate of carbon loss from deforestation in Latin America in the 2000s was 253.0 ± 21.5 Tg C/year, which was considerably less than existing remote-sensing-based estimates, namely 400-600 Tg C/year. This indicates that forests in Latin America were most likely not a net carbon source in the 2000s compared to established carbon sinks. In previous studies, considerable effort has been devoted to rectify the underestimation of carbon sinks; thus, the overestimation of carbon emissions should be given sufficient consideration in global carbon budgets. Our results also provide solid evidence for the necessity of renewing knowledge on the role of tropical forests in the global carbon budget in the future using observations from new space missions.

RESUMO

Five countries in the Lancang-Mekong region, including Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, are facing the threat of deforestation, despite having a high level of forest coverage. Quantitatively assessing the forest ecosystem status and its variations based on remote sensing products for vegetation parameters is a crucial prerequisite for the ongoing phase of our future project. In this study, we analyzed forest health in the year 2020 using four vegetation indicators: forest coverage index (FCI), leaf area index (LAI), fraction of green vegetation cover (FVC), and gross primary productivity (GPP). Additionally, we introduced an ecosystem quality index (EQI) to assess the quality of forest health. To understand the long-term trends in the vegetation indicators and EQI, we also performed a linear regression analysis from 2010 to 2020. The results revealed that Laos ranked as the top-performing country for forest ecosystem status in the Lancang-Mekong region in 2020. However, the long-term trend analysis results showed that Cambodia experienced the most significant decline across all indicators, while Vietnam and Thailand demonstrated varying degrees of improvement. This study provides a quality assessment of forest health and its variations in the Lancang-Mekong region, which is crucial for implementing effective conservation strategies.

RESUMO

Grasslands represent the largest ecosystem in China, accurate and efficient extraction of its integrated vegetation cover (IVC) plays a crucial role in supporting policy decisions. This study presented a method for grassland monitoring via IVC derived from high-resolution satellite data. Taking the multispectral data of Gaofen-1 (GF-1) and Gaofen-6 (GF-6) with 16 m resolution as the main data source, vegetation cover of six representative regions was assessed based on mixed-pixel decomposition model. Using grassland vegetation cover and ratio of grassland area, the IVC in each site was calculated and verified against ground-measured sample data. The results showed that the IVC of grassland was closely related to vegetation habitat driven by regional hydrothermal regime. Yichang grassland, dominated with warm-temperate shrub tussock type, had the highest IVC (80.06 %) due to its favorable hydrothermal conditions. For the main grassland types in Hulunbuir and Gansu Province (temperate meadow steppe and temperate typical steppe), the IVC was 79.38 % and 58.46 %, respectively. In both Xilin-Gol and Nagqu, vegetation cover decreased gradually from east to west, and the IVC was merely 42.83 % and 42.61 %, respectively. Both regions are endowed with less hydrothermal resources to different degrees. Alxa, with a predominately temperate desert landscape, had the lowest IVC of 15.58 % where precipitation is extremely scarce. Based on the grass species of measured samples, the dominant species and biodiversity of different grassland types in Gansu Province and Hulunbuir Municipality of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region were analyzed. The results showed that the meadow grassland has the richest biodiversity. The temperate mountain meadows in Gansu Province have a high species diversity, with a total of 90 grass species, and the lowland meadows in Hulunbuir have a total of 49 grass species. This study utilizes high-resolution data to conduct large-scale vegetation monitoring, which is a viable alternative for efficient assessment of steppe ecology.

RESUMO

High-resolution and multi-temporal impervious surface area maps are crucial for capturing rapidly developing urbanization patterns. However, the currently available relevant maps for the greater Mekong subregion suffer from coarse resolution and low accuracy. Addressing this issue, our study focuses on the development of accurate impervious surface area maps at 10-m resolution for this region for the period 2016-2022. To accomplish this, we present a new machine-learning framework implemented on the Google Earth Engine platform that merges Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar images and Sentinel-2 Multispectral images to extract impervious surfaces. Furthermore, we also introduce a training sample migration strategy that eliminates the collection of additional training samples and automates multi-temporal impervious surface area mapping. Finally, we perform a quantitative assessment with validation samples interpreted from Google Earth. Results show that the overall accuracy and kappa coefficient of the final impervious surface area maps range from 92.75% to 92.93% and 0.854 to 0.857, respectively. This dataset provides comprehensive measurements of impervious surface coverage and configuration that will help to inform urban studies.

RESUMO

We presented a framework to evaluate the land use transformations over the Eurasian Steppe (EUS) driven by human activities from 2000 to 2020. Framework involves three main components: (1) evaluate the spatial-temporal dynamics of land use transitions by utilizing the land change modeler (LCM) and remote sensing data; (2) quantifying the individual contributions of climate change and human activities using improved residual trend analysis (IRTA) and pixel-based partial correlation coefficient (PCC); and (3) quantifying the contributions of land use transitions to Leaf Area Index Intensity (LAII) by using the linear regression. Research findings indicate an increase in cropland (+1.17 % = 104,217 km2) over EUS, while a - 0.80 % reduction over Uzbekistan and - 0.16 % over Tajikistan. From 2000 to 2020 a slight increase in grassland was observed over the EUS region by 0.05 %. The detailed findings confirm an increase (0.24 % = 21,248.62 km2) of grassland over the 1st half (2000-2010) and a decrease (-0.19 % = -16,490.50 km2) in the 2nd period (2011-2020), with a notable decline over Kazakhstan (-0.54 % = 13,690 km2), Tajikistan (-0.18 % = 1483 km2), and Volgograd (-0.79 % = 4346 km2). Area of surface water bodies has declined with an alarming rate over Kazakhstan (-0.40 % = 10,261 km2) and Uzbekistan (-2.22 % = 8943 km2). Additionally, dominant contributions of human activities to induced LULC transitions were observed over the Chinese region, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, and Volgograd regions, with approximately 87 %, 83 %, 92 %, and 47 %, respectively, causing effective transitions to 12,997 km2 of cropland, 24,645 km2 of grassland, 16,763 km2 of sparse vegetation in China, and 12,731.2 km2 to grassland and 15,356.1 km2 to sparse vegetation in Mongolia. Kazakhstan had mixed climate-human impact with human-driven transitions of 48,568 km2 of bare land to sparse vegetation, 27,741 km2 to grassland, and 49,789 km2 to cropland on the eastern sides. Southern regions near Uzbekistan had climatic dominancy, and 8472 km2 of water bodies turned into bare soil. LAII shows an increasing trend rate of 0.63 year-1, particularly over human-dominant regions. This study can guide knowledge of oscillations and reduce adverse impacts on ecosystems and their supply services.

RESUMO

Field-measured spectra are critical for remote sensing physical modelling, retrieval of structural, biophysical, and biochemical parameters, and other practical applications. We present a library of field spectra, which includes (1) portable field spectroradiometer measurements of vegetation, soil, and snow in the full-wave band, (2) multi-angle spectra measurements of desert vegetation, chernozems, and snow with consideration of the anisotropic reflectance of land surface, (3) multi-scale spectra measurements of leaf and canopy of different vegetation cover surfaces, and (4) continuous reflectance spectra time-series data revealing vegetation growth dynamics of maize, rice, wheat, rape, grassland, and so on. To the best of our knowledge, this library is unique in simultaneously providing full-band, multi-angle, multi-scale spectral measurements of the main surface elements of China covering a large spatial extent over a 10-year period. Furthermore, the 101 by 101 satellite pixels of Landsat ETM/OLI and MODIS surface reflectance centered around the field site were extracted, providing a vital linkage between ground measurements and satellite observations. The code language used for this work is Matlab 2016a.

RESUMO

As the most influential atmospheric oscillation on Earth, the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can significantly change the surface climate of the tropics and subtropics and affect the high latitudes of northern hemisphere areas through atmospheric teleconnection. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the dominant pattern of low-frequency variability in the Northern Hemisphere. As the dominant oscillations in the Northern Hemisphere, the ENSO and NAO have been affecting the giant grassland belt in the world, the Eurasian Steppe (EAS), in recent decades. In this study, the spatio-temporal anomaly patterns of grassland growth in the EAS and their correlations with the ENSO and NAO were investigated using four long-term leaf area index (LAI) and one normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) remote sensing products from 1982 to 2018. The driving forces of meteorological factors under the ENSO and NAO were analyzed. The results showed that grassland in the EAS has been turning green over the past 36 years. Warm ENSO events or positive NAO events accompanied by increased temperature and slightly more precipitation promoted grassland growth, and cold ENSO events or negative NAO events with cooling effects over the whole EAS and uneven precipitation decreased deteriorated the EAS grassland. During the combination of warm ENSO and positive NAO events, a more severe warming effect caused more significant grassland greening. Moreover, the co-occurrence of positive NAO with cold ENSO or warm ENSO with negative NAO kept the characteristic of the decreased temperature and rainfall in cold ENSO or negative NAO events, and deteriorate the grassland more severely.

RESUMO

Remote-sensing phenology detection can compensate for deficiencies in field observations and has the advantage of capturing the continuous expression of phenology on a large scale. However, there is some variability in the results of remote-sensing phenology detection derived from different vegetation parameters in satellite time-series data. Since the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and the leaf area index (LAI) are the most widely used vegetation parameters for remote-sensing phenology extraction, this paper aims to assess the differences in phenological information extracted from EVI and LAI time series and to explore whether either index performs well for all vegetation types on a large scale. To this end, a GLASS (Global Land Surface Satellite Product)-LAI-based phenology product (GLP) was generated using the same algorithm as the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)-EVI phenology product (MLCD) over China from 2001 to 2012. The two phenology products were compared in China for different vegetation types and evaluated using ground observations. The results show that the ratio of missing data is 8.3% for the GLP, which is less than the 22.8% for the MLCD. The differences between the GLP and the MLCD become stronger as the latitude decreases, which also vary among different vegetation types. The start of the growing season (SOS) of the GLP is earlier than that of the MLCD in most vegetation types, and the end of the growing season (EOS) of the GLP is generally later than that of the MLCD. Based on ground observations, it can be suggested that the GLP performs better than the MLCD in evergreen needleleaved forests and croplands, while the MLCD performs better than the GLP in shrublands and grasslands.

RESUMO

The radiometric capability of on-orbit sensors should be updated on time due to changes induced by space environmental factors and instrument aging. Some sensors, such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), have onboard calibrators, which enable real-time calibration. However, most Chinese remote sensing satellite sensors lack onboard calibrators. Their radiometric calibrations have been updated once a year based on a vicarious calibration procedure, which has affected the applications of the data. Therefore, a full evaluation of the sensors' radiometric capabilities is essential before quantitative applications can be made. In this study, a comprehensive procedure for evaluating the radiometric capability of several Chinese optical satellite sensors is proposed. In this procedure, long-term radiometric stability and radiometric accuracy are the two major indicators for radiometric evaluation. The radiometric temporal stability is analyzed by the tendency of long-term top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance variation; the radiometric accuracy is determined by comparison with the TOA reflectance from MODIS after spectrally matching. Three Chinese sensors including the Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) camera onboard Huan Jing 1 satellite (HJ-1), as well as the Visible and Infrared Radiometer (VIRR) and Medium-Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI) onboard the Feng Yun 3 satellite (FY-3) are evaluated in reflective bands based on this procedure. The results are reasonable, and thus can provide reliable reference for the sensors' application, and as such will promote the development of Chinese satellite data.

RESUMO

The Complicate Observations and Multi-Parameter Land Information Constructions on Allied Telemetry Experiment (COMPLICATE) comprises a network of remote sensing experiments designed to enhance the dynamic analysis and modeling of remotely sensed information for complex land surfaces. Two types of experimental campaigns were established under the framework of COMPLICATE. The first was designed for continuous and elaborate experiments. The experimental strategy helps enhance our understanding of the radiative and scattering mechanisms of soil and vegetation and modeling of remotely sensed information for complex land surfaces. To validate the methodologies and models for dynamic analyses of remote sensing for complex land surfaces, the second campaign consisted of simultaneous satellite-borne, airborne, and ground-based experiments. During field campaigns, several continuous and intensive observations were obtained. Measurements were undertaken to answer key scientific issues, as follows: 1) Determine the characteristics of spatial heterogeneity and the radiative and scattering mechanisms of remote sensing on complex land surfaces. 2) Determine the mechanisms of spatial and temporal scale extensions for remote sensing on complex land surfaces. 3) Determine synergist inversion mechanisms for soil and vegetation parameters using multi-mode remote sensing on complex land surfaces. Here, we introduce the background, the objectives, the experimental designs, the observations and measurements, and the overall advances of COMPLICATE. As a result of the implementation of COMLICATE and for the next several years, we expect to contribute to quantitative remote sensing science and Earth observation techniques.

RESUMO

In order to establish a complete set of simulation system for high-resolution mid-infrared remote sensing and provide a powerful reference for spacecraft design and related works, the importance of atmospheric radiative transfer simulation in this system was considered, and a reasonable and high precision imaging numerical simulation method was expected. Taking into account the characteristics of MIR, including scattering and thermal emission, terms of atmospheric radiative transfer were decomposed based on radiative transfer principle, and images of top of atmosphere (TOA) were simulated according to MODTRAN4 and look-up table method. Besides, adjacency effect caused by atmospheric scattering of neighboring pixels radiation was considered, and an extended point spread function in mid-infrared was coupled with analytical model of atmospheric radiative transfer to simulate TOA images. Finally, a preliminary test and simulation results show that the simulation model has better accuracy. If parameters of observation geometry and atmosphere were given and the land surface temperature/emissivity was determined, the calculation of pixel-level atmospheric radiative transfer was to be achieved.

RESUMO

The present paper firstly points out the defect of typical temperature and emissivity separation algorithms when dealing with hyperspectral FTIR data: the conventional temperature and emissivity algorithms can not reproduce correct emissivity value when the difference between the ground-leaving radiance and object's blackbody radiation at its true temperature and the instrument random noise are on the same order, and this phenomenon is very prone to occur rence near 714 and 1 250 cm(-1) in the field measurements. In order to settle this defect, a three-layer perceptron neural network has been introduced into the simultaneous inversion of temperature and emissivity from hyperspectral FTIR data. The soil emissivity spectra from the ASTER spectral library were used to produce the training data, the soil emissivity spectra from the MODIS spectral library were used to produce the test data, and the result of network test shows the MLP is robust. Meanwhile, the ISSTES algorithm was used to retrieve the temperature and emissivity form the test data. By comparing the results of MLP and ISSTES, we found the MLP can overcome the disadvantage of typical temperature and emisivity separation, although the rmse of derived emissivity using MLP is lower than the ISSTES as a whole. Hence, the MLP can be regarded as a beneficial complementarity of the typical temperature and emissivity separation.

RESUMO

A new estimation model of vegetation net primary production (NPP) based on remote sensing data and climatic data was presented, with which, the NPP of China terrestrial vegetation in 1982-2000 was estimated, and the intra- and inter- annual variation patterns of the NPP and its responses to climate factors were studied. The results showed that there was an obvious seasonal regularity in the intra-annual variation of the NPP. In 1982-2000, all the terrestrial vegetation types presented an increasing annual NPP, with the greatest increment for deciduous needle leaf forests and the smallest one for grasses. Evergreen broadleaf forests had the largest inter-annual variation, while grasses had the smallest one. Comparing with temperature, precipitation played a stronger driving role in the intra-annual variation of the NPP, and the effects of precipitation and temperature were more obvious in North China than in South China. The driving roles of the climate factors varied with season and latitude.
