Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality in women, yet it has not raised the awareness from the public. The pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease differs significantly between females and males concerning the effect of sex hormones. Estrogen and progestogen impact cardiovascular system through genomic and non-genomic effects. Before menopause, cardiovascular protective effects of estrogens have been well described. Progestogens were often used in combination with estrogens in hormone therapy. Fluctuations in sex hormone levels, particularly estrogen deficiency, were considered the specific risk factor in women's cardiovascular disease. However, considerable heterogeneity in the impact of hormone therapy was observed in clinical trials. The heterogeneity is likely closely associated with factors such as the initial time, administration route, dosage, and formulation of hormone therapy. This review will delve into the pathogenesis and hormone therapy, summarizing the effect of female sex hormones on hypertension, pre-eclampsia, coronary heart disease, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and cardiovascular risk factors specific to women.

Background: Dementia poses great health and social challenges in China. Dementia prevalence may vary across geographic areas, while comparable estimations on provincial level is lacking. This study aims to estimate dementia prevalence by provinces across China, taking into account risk factors of individual level and potential spatial correlation of provinces. Methods: In this study, 17,176 adults aged 50 years or older were included from the fourth wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS 2018), covering 28 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. To improve provincial representativeness, we constructed provincial survey weights based on China 7th census (2020). The prevalence of dementia and 95% Bayesian credible intervals (BCIs) were estimated using a Bayesian conditional autoregressive (CAR) model with spatially varying coefficients of covariates. Findings: The weighted prevalence of dementia at provincial level in China in 2018 ranged from 2.62% (95%BCI: 1.70%, 3.91%) to 13.53% (95%BCI: 8.82%, 20.93%). High dementia prevalence was concentrated in North China, with a prominent high-high cluster, while provinces of low prevalence were concentrated on East and South China, characterized by a low-low cluster. Ordered by the median estimation of prevalence, the top 10% of provinces, include Xinjiang, Jilin, and Beijing. Meanwhile, Fujian, Zhejiang, and Guangdong rank among the last. The association between dementia prevalence and drinking, smoking, social isolation, physical inactivity, hearing impairment, hypertension, and diabetes exhibits provincial variation. Interpretation: Our study identifies a geospatial disparity in dementia prevalence and risk factor effects across China's provinces, with high-high and low-low clusters in some northern and southern provinces, respectively. The findings emphasize the need for targeted strategies, such as addressing hypertension and hearing impairment, in specific regions for more effective dementia prevention and treatment. Organisms maintain metabolic homeostasis through the combined functions of small-molecule transporters and enzymes. While many metabolic components have been well established, a substantial number remains without identified physiological substrates. To bridge this gap, we have leveraged large-scale plasma metabolome genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to develop a multiomic Gene-Metabolite Association Prediction (GeneMAP) discovery platform. GeneMAP can generate accurate predictions and even pinpoint genes that are distant from the variants implicated by GWAS. In particular, our analysis identified solute carrier family 25 member 48 (SLC25A48) as a genetic determinant of plasma choline levels. Mechanistically, SLC25A48 loss strongly impairs mitochondrial choline import and synthesis of its downstream metabolite betaine. Integrative rare variant and polygenic score analyses in UK Biobank provide strong evidence that the SLC25A48 causal effects on human disease may in part be mediated by the effects of choline. Altogether, our study provides a discovery platform for metabolic gene function and proposes SLC25A48 as a mitochondrial choline transporter.

Coral reef ecosystems are the most productive and biodiverse marine ecosystems, with their productivity levels highly dependent on the symbiotic dinoflagellates belonging to the family Symbiodiniaceae. As a unique life history strategy, resting cyst production is of great significance in the ecology of many dinoflagellate species, those HABs-causing species in particular, however, there has been no confirmative evidence for the resting cyst production in any species of the family Symbiodiniaceae. Based on morphological and life history observations of cultures in the laboratory and morpho-molecular detections of cysts from the marine sediments via fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), cyst photography, and subsequent singe-cyst PCR sequencing, here we provide evidences for the asexual production of resting cysts by Effrenium voratum, the free-living, red tide-forming, and the type species of the genus Effrenium in Symbiodiniaceae. The evidences from the marine sediments were obtained through a sequential detections: Firstly, E. voratum amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were detected in the cyst assemblages that were concentrated with the sodium polytungstate (SPT) method from the sediments collected from different regions of China Seas by high-throughput next generation sequencing (NGS); Secondly, the presence of E. voratum in the sediments was detected by PCR using the species-specific primers for the DNA directly extracted from sediment; Thirdly, E. voratum cysts were confirmed by a combined approach of FISH using the species-specific probes, light microscopic (LM) photography of the FISH-positive cysts, and a subsequent single-cyst PCR sequencing for the FISH-positive and photographed cysts. The evidences from the laboratory-reared clonal cultures of E. voratum include that: 1) numerous cysts formed in the two clonal cultures and exhibited a spherical shape, a smooth surface, absence of ornaments, and a large red accumulation body; 2) cysts could maintain morphologically intact for a storage of two weeks to six months at 4 °C in darkness and of which 76-92 % successfully germinated through an internal development processes within a time period of 3-21 days after being transferred back to the normal culturing conditions; 3) two or four germlings were released from each cyst through the cryptopylic archeopyle in all cysts with continuous observations of germination processes; and 4) while neither sexual mating of gametes nor planozygote (cells with two longitudinal flagella) were observed, the haploidy of cysts was proven with flow cytometric measurements and direct LM measurements of fluorescence from cells stained with either propidium iodide (PI) or DAPI, which together suggest that the cysts were formed asexually. All evidences led to a conclusion that E. voratum is capable of producing asexual resting cysts, although its sexuality cannot be completely excluded, which guarantees a more intensive investigation. This work fills a gap in the knowledge about the life cycle, particularly the potential of resting cyst formation, of the species in Symbiodiniaceae, a group of dinoflagellates having unique life forms and vital significance in the ecology of coral reefs, and may provide novel insights into understanding the recovery mechanisms of coral reefs destructed by the global climate change and suggest various forms of resting cysts in the cyst assemblages of dinoflagellates observed in the field sediments, including HABs-causing species.

Late-stage modification of peptides could potentially endow peptides with significant bioactivity and physicochemical properties, and thereby provide novel opportunities for peptide pharmaceutical studies. Since tryptophan (Trp) bears a unique indole ring residue and plays various critical functional roles in peptides, the modification methods for tryptophan were preliminarily developed with considerable progress via transition-metal mediated C-H activation. Herein, we report an unprecedented tertiary amine catalyzed peptide allylation via the SN2'-SN2' pathway between the N1 position of the indole ring of Trp and Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates. Using this method that proceeds under mild conditions, we demonstrated an extremely broad scope of Trp-containing peptides and MBH carbonates to prepare a series of peptide conjugates and cyclic peptides. The reaction is amenable to either solid-phase (on resin) or solution-phase conditions. In addition, the modified peptides can be further conjugated with other biomolecules at Trp, providing a new handle for bioconjugation.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain malignancy. Novel therapeutic modalities like tumor electric field therapy (TEFT) have shown promise, but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is implicated in GBM progression, warranting investigation into TEFT-ECM interplay. METHODS: T98G cells were treated with TEFT (200 kHz, 2.2 V/m) for 72 h. Collagen type VI alpha 1 (COL6A1) was identified as hub gene via comprehensive bioinformatic analysis based on RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and public glioma datasets. TEFT intervention models were established using T98G and Ln229 cell lines. Pre-TEFT and post-TEFT GBM tissues were collected for further validation. Focal adhesion pathway activity was assessed by western blot. Functional partners of COL6A1 were identified and validated by co-localization and survival analysis. RESULTS: TEFT altered ECM-related gene expression in T98G cells, including the hub gene COL6A1. COL6A1 was upregulated in GBM and associated with poor prognosis. Muti-database GBM single-cell analysis revealed high-COL6A1 expression predominantly in malignant cell subpopulations. Differential expression and functional enrichment analyses suggested COL6A1 might be involved in ECM organization and focal adhesion. Western blot (WB), immunofluorescence (IF), and co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) experiments revealed that TEFT significantly inhibited expression of COL6A1, hindering its interaction with ITGA5, consequently suppressing the FAK/Paxillin/AKT pathway activity. These results suggested that TEFT might exert its antitumor effects by downregulating COL6A1 and thereby inhibiting the activity of the focal adhesion pathway. CONCLUSION: TEFT could remodel the ECM of GBM cells by downregulating COL6A1 expression and inhibiting focal adhesion pathway. COL6A1 could interact with ITGA5 and activate the focal adhesion pathway, suggesting that it might be a potential therapeutic target mediating the antitumor effects of TEFT.

Ships' ballast water and sediments have long been linked to the global transport and expansion of invasive species and thus have become a hot research topic and administrative challenge in the past decades. The relevant concerns, however, have been mainly about the ocean-to-ocean invasion and sampling practices have been almost exclusively conducted onboard. We examined and compared the dinoflagellate cysts assemblages in 49 sediment samples collected from ballast tanks of international and domestic routes ships, washing basins associated with a ship-repair yard, Jiangyin Port (PS), and the nearby area of Yangtze River (YR) during 2017-2018. A total of 43 dinoflagellates were fully identified to species level by metabarcoding, single-cyst PCR-based sequencing, cyst germination and phylogenetic analyses, including 12 species never reported from waters of China, 14 HABs-causing, 9 toxic, and 10 not strictly marine species. Our metabarcoding and single-cyst sequencing also detected many OTUs and cysts of dinoflagellates that could not be fully identified, indicating ballast tank sediments being a risky repository of currently unrecognizable invasive species. Particularly important, 10 brackish and fresh water species of dinoflagellate cysts (such as Tyrannodinium edax) were detected from the transoceanic ships, indicating these species may function as alien species potentially invading the inland rivers and adjacent lakes if these ships conduct deballast and other practices in fresh waterbodies. Significantly higher numbers of reads and OTUs of dinoflagellates in the ballast tanks and washing basins than that in PS and YR indicate a risk of releasing cysts by ships and the associated ship-repair yards to the surrounding waters. Phylogenetic analyses revealed high intra-species genetic diversity for multiple cyst species from different ballast tanks. Our work provides novel insights into the risk of bio-invasion to fresh waters conveyed in ship's ballast tank sediments and washing basins of shipyards.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive malignant tumor with a high mortality rate and is the most prevalent primary intracranial tumor that remains incurable. The current standard treatment, which involves surgery along with concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy, only yields a survival time of 14-16 months. However, the introduction of tumor electric fields therapy (TEFT) has provided a glimmer of hope for patients with newly diagnosed and recurrent GBM, as it has been shown to extend the median survival time to 20 months. The combination of TEFT and other advanced therapies is a promising trend in the field of GBM, facilitated by advancements in medical technology. AIMS: In this review, we provide a concise overview of the mechanism and efficacy of TEFT. In addition, we mainly discussed the innovation of TEFT and our proposed blueprint for TEFT implementation. CONCLUSION: Tumor electric fields therapy is an effective and highly promising treatment modality for GBM. The full therapeutic potential of TEFT can be exploited by combined with other innovative technologies and treatments.

Dihuang Baoyuan Granules is a prescription endorsed by HU Tianbao, a renowned and elderly Chinese medicine practitioner from Beijing, and has demonstrated definite clinical efficacy. The composition of this prescription is intricate as it includes 7 distinct herbal medicines. This study aims to analyze the chemical composition of Dihuang Baoyuan Granules, evaluate its efficacy in the treatment of diabetes and analyze the distribution of the drug components in the plasma, liver, and kidney after administration. The findings will serve as a reference for future research on pharmacodynamic substances of this prescription. UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap MS was employed to analyze the main chemical components of Dihuang Baoyuan Granules. A Waters ACQUITY Premier HSS T3 column(2.1 mm×100 mm, 1.8 µm) was used for chromatographic separation with 0.1% formic acid(A)-acetonitrile(B) as the mobile phases in a gradient elution at a flow rate of 0.3 mL·min~(-1). Electrospray ionization(ESI) source was used to acquire data in positive and negative ion modes. Furthermore, a rat model of diabetes mellitus was established by feeding with a high-sugar high-fat diet, and injection with streptozocin at a dose of 35 mg·kg~(-1), and the modeled rats were then administrated with Dihuang Baoyuan Granules. The fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and other relevant indicators were measured, and the substances present in the plasma, liver, and kidney were identified. By reference to quasi-molecular ions, MS/MS fragment ions, MS spectra of reference substances, and compound information in available reports, 191 components were identified in Dihuang Baoyuan Granules, including 29 alkaloids, 24 flavonoids, 22 organic acids, 16 amino acids, 12 terpenes, 11 steroid saponins, 9 sugars, 8 phenylethanoid glycosides, 8 nucleosides, 2 phenylpropanoids, and 49 others compounds. Eighty-three chemical components were identified in rat plasma, 109 in the liver, and 98 in the kidney. Component identification and characterization of Dihuang Baoyuan Granules in vitro and in vivo provide efficacy information and guidance for the basic research on the pharmacodynamic substances and further clinical application of this prescription.

Artificial metalloenzymes (ArMs) are constructed by anchoring organometallic catalysts to an evolvable protein scaffold. They present the advantages of both components and exhibit considerable potential for the in vivo catalysis of new-to-nature reactions. Herein, Escherichia coli surface-displayed Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHbSD-Co) that anchored the cobalt porphyrin cofactor instead of the original heme cofactor was used as an artificial thiourea oxidase (ATOase) to synthesize 5-imino-1,2,4-thiadiazoles. After two rounds of directed evolution using combinatorial active-site saturation test/iterative saturation mutagenesis (CAST/ISM) strategy, the evolved six-site mutation VHbSD-Co (6SM-VHbSD-Co) exhibited significant improvement in catalytic activity, with a broad substrate scope (31 examples) and high yields with whole cells. This study shows the potential of using VHb ArMs in new-to-nature reactions and demonstrates the applicability of E. coli surface-displayed methods to enhance catalytic properties through the substitution of porphyrin cofactors in hemoproteins in vivo.

Employing an MS/MS-based molecular networking-guided strategy, three new eudesmane-type sesquiterpenes (1-3) and one undescribed pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene (8), along with four known eudesmane-type sesquiterpene lactones (4-7) were extracted and purified from the herbs of Carpesium abrotanoides L. Structural elucidation encompassed comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, NMR calculations, DP4+ analysis, and ECD calculations. The cytotoxicity activity of all isolates was evaluated against two human hepatoma carcinoma cells (HepG2 and Hep3B) in vitro. It was demonstrated that compounds 2 and 4 showed moderate cytotoxic against HepG2 and Hep3B cells. Furthermore, all compounds were evaluated for their acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity. Particularly noteworthy is that, in comparison to the positive control, compound 1 demonstrated significant AChE inhibition with an inhibition rate of 77.86%. In addition, the inhibitory mechanism of compound 1 were investigated by in silico docking analyze and molecular dynamic simulation.

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) refer to toxic chemical substances used in warfare. Recently, CWAs have been a critical threat for public safety due to their high toxicity. Metal-organic frameworks have exhibited great potential in protecting against CWAs due to their high crystallinity, stable structure, large specific surface area, high porosity, and adjustable structure. However, the metal clusters of most reported MOFs might be highly consumed when applied in CWA hydrolysis. Herein, we fabricated a two-dimensional piezoresponsive UiO-66-F4 and subjected it to CWA simulant dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) detoxification under sonic conditions. The results show that sonication can effectively enhance the removal performance under optimal conditions; the reaction rate constant k was upgraded 45% by sonication. Moreover, the first-principle calculation revealed that the band gap could be further widened with the application of mechanical stress, which was beneficial for the generation of 1O2, thus further upgrading the detoxification performance toward DMNP. This work demonstrated that mechanical vibration could be introduced to CWA protection, but promising applications are rarely reported.

This study explored the biosynthesis of bufadienolides(BDs) in Bufo bufo gargarizans to solve the dilemma of the decreasing resources of B. bufo gargarizans and provide a theoretical basis for the sustainable utilization of the resources. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-Orbitrap-mass spectrometry(UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS) was employed to detect the synthesis sites of BDs in B. bufo gargarizans, and the results were verified by desorption electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry imaging(DESI-MSI) and homogenate incubation experiments. BDs in B. bufo gargarizans had the highest content in the liver and the highest concentration in the gallbladder, in addition to the parotid gland and skin, which suggested that the liver could synthesize BDs. The results of DESI-MSI also showed that BDs were mainly enriched in the liver rather than the immature parotid gland. The incubation experiment of liver homogenates demonstrated the liver of B. bufo gargarizans had the ability to synthesize BDs. This study showed that the liver was a major organ for the synthesis of BDs in B. bufo gargarizans during metamorphosis, development, and growth, which provided strong theoretical support for the biosynthesis of BDs and the sustainable utilization of B. bufo gargarizans resources.

Motivation: Bitterness plays a pivotal role in our ability to identify and evade harmful substances in food. As one of the five tastes, it constitutes a critical component of our sensory experiences. However, the reliance on human tasting for discerning flavors presents cost challenges, rendering in silico prediction of bitterness a more practical alternative. Results: In this study, we introduce the use of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) in bitterness prediction, superseding traditional machine learning techniques. We developed an advanced model, a Hybrid Graph Neural Network (HGNN), surpassing conventional GNNs according to tests on public datasets. Using HGNN and three other GNNs, we designed BitterGNNs, a bitterness predictor that achieved an AUC value of 0.87 in both external bitter/non-bitter and bitter/sweet evaluations, outperforming the acclaimed RDKFP-MLP predictor with AUC values of 0.86 and 0.85. We further created a bitterness prediction website and database, TastePD (https://www.tastepd.com/). The BitterGNNs predictor, built on GNNs, offers accurate bitterness predictions, enhancing the efficacy of bitterness prediction, aiding advanced food testing methodology development, and deepening our understanding of bitterness origins. To explore the moderating role of dyadic appraisal in the association between dyadic coping and diabetes management efficacy. Two hundred seventy six middle-aged and older couple pairs with one spouse who had diabetes were recruited from 14 community healthcare centers across Guangzhou. The moderating role of dyadic appraisal was investigated using the actor-partner interdependence moderation model. When both couples considered diabetes to be a shared condition, statistically-significant associations were found between patients' negative (ß = -22.7, p = 0.008) and neutral behaviors (ß = 13.6, p = 0.017), plus spouses' positive behaviors (ß = 22.8, p = 0.009) on their own diabetes management efficacy, respectively (i.e. actor effects); as well as between spouses' positive (ß = 16.8, p = 0.028), negative (ß = -28.5, p < 0.001), and neutral behaviors (ß = 16.9, p = 0.006) on patient's diabetes management efficacy (i.e. partner effects). Dyadic appraisal moderates the association between dyadic coping and diabetes management efficacy.

Neutrophil-myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a heme-containing peroxidase which produces excess amounts of hypochlorous acid during inflammation. While pharmacological MPO inhibition mitigates all indices of experimental colitis, no studies have corroborated the role of MPO using knockout (KO) models. Therefore, we investigated MPO deficient mice in a murine model of colitis. Wild type (Wt) and MPO-deficient mice were treated with dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) in a chronic model of experimental colitis with three acute cycles of DSS-induced colitis over 63 days, emulating IBD relapse and remission cycles. Mice were immunologically profiled at the gut muscoa and the faecal microbiome was assessed via 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Contrary to previous pharmacological antagonist studies targeting MPO, MPO-deficient mice showed no protection from experimental colitis during cyclical DSS-challenge. We are the first to report drastic faecal microbiota shifts in MPO-deficient mice, showing a significantly different microbiome profile on Day 1 of treatment, with a similar shift and distinction on Day 29 (half-way point), via qualitative and quantitative descriptions of phylogenetic distances. Herein, we provide the first evidence of substantial microbiome shifts in MPO-deficiency, which may influence disease progression. Our findings have significant implications for the utility of MPO-KO mice in investigating disease models.

Background: Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is an extraesophageal syndromic manifestation of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Despite the increasing incidence of and concern about LPRD, treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is unsatisfactory. Here, LPRD was treated with Tonghua Liyan (THLY) granules in combination with PPIs to evaluate treatment efficacy and possible adverse reactions. Methods: Seventy-six LPRD patients with stagnation of phlegm and qi syndrome (SPQS) were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received THLY granules combined with rabeprazole capsules. The control group received THLY granule placebo combined with rabeprazole capsules. A parallel, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted with these two groups. The treatment cycle was 8 weeks. The reflux symptom index (RSI), clinical symptom score, salivary pepsin content, reflux finding score (RFS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease questionnaire (GerdQ) were used to evaluate clinical efficacy. The final efficacy rate was evaluated according to the RSI and clinical symptom score. Results: Compared with those at baseline, all the indicators in the experimental group and control group significantly improved (p < 0.01). In terms of the RSI, clinical symptom score, and RFS, the experimental group had a higher degree of improvement (p < 0.05), and the overall efficacy rate was higher (p < 0.05). In terms of the salivary pepsin concentration and GerdQ, there was no significant difference between the test group and the control group (p > 0.05). Both groups of safety indicators showed no abnormalities and did not cause any allergic reactions in the body. Conclusion: Compared with PPIs alone, THLY granules combined with PPIs are more effective in the treatment of LPRD patients with SPQS in terms of symptoms and signs. This combination treatment, because of its higher clinical efficacy and lack of obvious adverse reactions, is worthy of clinical promotion and further in-depth study. AIMS: Glioblastoma is the most frequent and aggressive primary brain tumor, characterized by rapid disease course and poor treatment responsiveness. The abundance of immunosuppressive macrophages in glioblastoma challenges the efficacy of novel immunotherapy. METHODS: Bulk RNA-seq and single-cell RNA-seq of glioma patients from public databases were comprehensively analyzed to illustrate macrophage infiltration patterns and molecular characteristics of podoplanin (PDPN). Multiplexed fluorescence immunohistochemistry staining of PDPN, GFAP, CD68, and CD163 were performed in glioma tissue microarray. The impact of PDPN on macrophage immunosuppressive polarization was investigated using a co-culture system. Bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) and OT-II T cells isolated from BALB/c and OT-II mice respectively were co-cultured to determine T-cell adherence. Pathway alterations were probed through RNA sequencing and western blot analyses. RESULTS: Our findings demonstrated that PDPN is notably correlated with the expression of CD68 and CD163 in glioma tissues. Additionally, macrophages phagocytosing PDPN-containing EVs (EVsPDPN ) from GBM cells presented increased CD163 expression and augmented secretion of immunoregulatory cytokine (IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and TGF-ß1). PDPN within EVs was also associated with enhanced phagocytic activity and reduced MHC II expression in macrophages, compromising CD4+ T-cell activation. CONCLUSIONS: This investigation underscores that EVsPDPN derived from glioblastoma cells contributes to M2 macrophage-mediated immunosuppression and is a potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target in glioblastoma.

This research intended to investigate the influence of the operation of both kinds of hysterectomies in the risk of wound infection and the degree of wound dehiscence. Both of them were open field and laparoscope. In this research, we looked into four databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library. Research was conducted on various operative methods for hysterectomy in obese patients between 2000 and October 2023. Two independent investigators performed an independent review of the data, established the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and managed the results with Endnote software. It also evaluated the quality of the included literature. Finally, the data were analysed with RevMan 5.3. This study involved 874 cases, 387 cases received laparoscopy and 487 cases received open access operation. Our findings indicate that there is a significant reduction in the rate of post-operative wound infection among those who have received laparoscopy compared with who have received open surgical procedures (odds ratio [OR], 0.04; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.01-0.15; p < 0.001); There was no statistical difference between the rate of post-operative wound dehiscence and those who received laparotomy compared with those who received open surgical procedures (OR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.10-1.11; p = 0.07); The estimated amount of blood lost during the operation was less in the laparoscopy group compared with the open procedure (mean difference, -123.72; 95% CI, -215.16 to -32.28; p = 0.008). Generally speaking, the application of laparoscopy to overweight women who have had a hysterectomy results in a reduction in the expected amount of bleeding during surgery and a reduction in the risk of post-operative wound infections.

There is growing concern about the role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in neurological illnesses, and it makes sense to consider microglia as a critical component of this axis in the context of epilepsy. Microglia, which reside in the central nervous system, are dynamic guardians that monitor brain homeostasis. Microglia receive information from the gut microbiota and function as hubs that may be involved in triggering epileptic seizures. Vagus nerve bridges the communication in the axis. Essential axis signaling molecules, such as gamma-aminobutyric acid, 5-hydroxytryptamin, and short-chain fatty acids, are currently under investigation for their participation in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). In this review, we explain how vagus nerve connects the gut microbiota to microglia in the brain and discuss the emerging concepts derived from this interaction. Understanding microbiota-gut-brain axis in epilepsy brings hope for DRE therapies. Future treatments can focus on the modulatory effect of the axis and target microglia in solving DRE.
