RESUMO

PURPOSE: The study aimed to investigate the factors associated with anterior location of Marx's line in ocular surface and living habits, especially in tear film. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study enlisted 483 participants with meibomian gland dysfunction, who were divided into two groups: 160 participants with mild anterior location of Marx's line and 323 participants with moderate-to-severe anterior location. Participants completed a survey of demographic characteristics (sex, age, length of visual terminal use, sleep duration, skin property), and the Ocular Surface Disease Index and Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness questionnaires. They also underwent slit-lamp examinations of the lids, and measurements of non-invasive tear break up time, tear meniscus height, fluorescein tear break up time, lipid layer thickness, partial blink rate, lid wiper epitheliopathy, and meibomian gland dropout. RESULTS: The tear meniscus height (mild:0.21(0.18-0.25), moderate-to-severe:0.19(0.16-0.23), p = 0.004), fluorescein tear break up time(mild:3(2-4),moderate to severe:2(1-3), p = 0.000), max LLT(mild:87(62-100), moderate-to-severe:99(69-100), p = 0.04), average LLT(mild:64.5(47.5-96.75), moderate-to-severe:74(53-100), p = 0.012), min LLT(mild:52(38-75), moderate-to-severe:59(41-85), p = 0.029) differed significantly between mild and moderate-to-severe anterior location of Marx's line, and associated to the anterior location of Marx's line(r=-0.134, p = 0.03; r=-0.194, p = 0.000; r = 0.093, p = 0.041; r = 0.119, p = 0.009; r = 0.105, p = 0.022) However, no statistical significance was observed in the OSDI, SPEED, partial blink rate, non-invasive tear breakup time, lipid layer thickness, meibomian gland dropout and lid wiper epitheliopathy(p > 0.05). Meanwhile, in the demographic characteristics, statistically significant correlations were associated with skin property(r = 0.154, p = 0.001) and sleep duration(r=-0.124, p = 0.006), but not with age, sex, and the length of visual terminal use (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Lower TMH and shorter TBUT positively correlated with anterior location of the Marx's line, and were risk factors. Meanwhile, participants with oily skin and shorter sleep duration were more likely to exhibit anterior location of Marx's line.

RESUMO

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Assessing the consistency of pupil offset measurements between the Pentacam and Keratron Scout is essential for the refractive surgery design of young myopic patients. BACKGROUND: Accurate preoperative measurement of pupil offset is critical to achieving a better quality of vision after refractive surgery. The Pentacam and Keratron Scout are commonly used in hospitals, and evaluating their consistency is essential for accurate measurement of pupil offset. METHODS: Six hundred eyes (600 subjects) were included in this study. Pupil offset and its X, Y-component were measured by Pentacam and Keratron Scout, respectively. Agreement and repeatability between the two devices were identified by intraclass correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman plots with 95% limits of agreement. Paired t-tests and Pearson analysis were used to compare the differences and correlations between the two devices. RESULTS: The mean age of all subjects was 23 ± 5 years. The mean pupil offset magnitude obtained from Pentacam and Keratron Scout was 0.16 ± 0.08 mm and 0.15 ± 0.07 mm. The 95% limits of agreement (-0.11-0.13, -0.09-0.11, and -0.11-0.12) and intraclass correlation coefficient (0.82, 0.84, and 0.81) demonstrated good agreement and repeatability of the two devices in measuring pupil offset and its X, Y-component. A significant correlation between the two devices was found (r = 0.71, 0.73, and 0.70). The direction of pupil offset measured by the devices was both predominately towards the superonasal quadrant. CONCLUSION: Pentacam and Keratron Scout showed good agreement in measuring pupil offset and its X, Y-component, which can be used interchangeably in clinical practice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between multiple higher-order aberrations (HOAs) subgroups and pupil offset, as well as to analyze the factors affecting postoperative corneal HOAs in patients with different degrees of refractive errors. METHODS: We enrolled 160 patients (316 eyes) aged ≥ 18 years who had undergone femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) treatment. Based on the relationship between the preoperative pupil offset and the postoperative ΔHOAs, all patients were divided into two groups: group I (pupil offset ≤ 0.20 mm) and group II (pupil offset > 0.20 mm). All of the eyes had low to high myopia with or without astigmatism (manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) < -10.00 D). Uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity, MRSE, pupil offset, central corneal thickness, corneal HOAs, vertical coma (Z3-1), horizontal coma (Z31), spherical aberration (Z40), trefoil 0° (Z33), and trefoil 30° (Z3-3) over a 6 mm diameter central corneal zone diameter were evaluated preoperatively and at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Our result revealed significant differences in postoperative corneal total root mean square (RMS) HOAs, RMS vertical coma, RMS horizontal coma, RMS spherical aberration, and RMS trefoil 30° between group I and group II. ΔMRSE was found to be an effective factor for ΔRMS HOAs (R2 = 0.383), ΔRMS horizontal coma (R2 = 0.205), and ΔRMS spherical aberration (R2 = 0.397). In group II, multiple linear regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between preoperative pupillary offset and Δtotal RMS HOAs (R2 = 0.461), ΔRMS horizontal coma (R2 = 0.040), and ΔRMS trefoil 30°(R2 = 0.089). The ΔRMS vertical coma effect factor is the Y-component, and the factor influencing ΔRMS spherical aberration was ΔMRSE (R2 = 0.256). CONCLUSION: A small pupil offset was associated with a lower induction of postoperative corneal HOAs. Efforts to optimize centration are critical for improving surgical outcomes in patients with FS-LASIK.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the associations between Demodex infestation and the ocular surface characteristics of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in different age groups, to further understand the effect of Demodex on MGD. METHODS: A total of 202 consecutive MGD patients aged 18 to 70 years were randomly recruited. All patients were divided into two groups based on their age: young patients (18-40 years) and elderly patients (41-70 years). The main observations were the different relationship between Demodex infestation and ocular surface and meibomian gland (MG) parameters in two age groups. We also compared ocular surface and MG parameters between the young and the elderly groups. Demodex infestation was diagnosed based on expert consensus in China. RESULTS: Our results indicated significant differences among young Demodex-positive, suspicious-positive, and negative patients in MG dropout (P = 0.000), plugging of MG orifices (P = 0.000), lid margin abnormality (P = 0.000), and meibum quality (P = 0.000). In elderly patients, there were significant differences among the Demodex-positive, suspicious-positive, and negative groups in terms of ocular surface disease index (OSDI) (P = 0.037), fluorescein tear film break-up time (FBUT) (P = 0.002), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) (P = 0.036), MG dropout (P = 0.000), plugging of MG orifices (P = 0.008), lid margin abnormality (P = 0.000), and MG expression (P = 0.037). The mean number of mites in elderly Demodex-positive patients (10.64 ± 7.50) was greater than that of in young patients (7.60 ± 4.71) (P = 0.014). MG dropout (P = 0.000), plugging of MG orifices (P = 0.006), lid margin abnormality (P = 0.000), MG expression(P = 0.001), and meibum quality (P = 0.032) were more severe in elderly Demodex-positive patients. Additionally, FBUT (P = 0.005) was lower and tear film lipid layer thickness (LLT) (P = 0.001) was higher in the elderly. CONCLUSION: The effect of Demodex infestation on the ocular surface and MG parameters of MGD was different in patients of different ages. It is necessary to pay more attention to the diagnosis and treatment of Demodex infestation in MGD.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the association between dry eye disease (DED) and DED-related anxiety and depression tendencies, as well as the risk factors for anxiety and depression in patients with DED of different age groups. This was a cross-sectional study involving 160 patients with DED and 80 healthy individuals aged 20-65 years. All participants completed the investigation of the demographic characteristics, the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire, and underwent objective clinical eye examinations. In patients aged 20-40 years, anxiety and depression scores were correlated with OSDI, sleep disorders, and Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA). In patients with DED aged 41-65 years, anxiety scores were correlated with sleep disorders, the level of DED impact on life and work, and the severity of DED. Depression scores were correlated with sleep disorders and the severity of DED. The results indicated that the tendency for anxiety and depression was closely associated with DED and sleep disorders. Moreover, the factors affecting anxiety and depression in patients varied with age.

RESUMO

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of pupil offset in young Asian adults with myopia. Methods: In total, 1200 eyes (600 young adults, 18-35 years old) were divided into mild-moderate and high groups according to equivalent spherical diopters (SEQ). The pupil offset and its X and Y components were compared between the groups. Linear correlation was analyzed among pupil offset, X and Y components, and SEQ. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted for pupil offset and eye parameters. Results: The mean age of all subjects was 22.5 ± 4.8 years. The mean magnitude of the pupil offset (0.18 ± 0.09 mm vs. 0.15 ± 0.08 mm) and Y component (0.12 ± 0.08 mm vs. 0.10 ± 0.07 mm) were larger in the high group than in the mild-moderate group (P < 0.05). The magnitude of pupil offset, X and Y components, and SEQ were positively correlated. The pupil center (PC) of the right eye in the mild-moderate group was mainly superotemporal to the corneal vertex and mainly superonasal for the left eye and both eyes in the high group. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the magnitude of pupil offset correlated with central corneal thickness, intraocular pressure, and mean corneal curvature (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The magnitude of the pupil offset that correlated with partial eye parameters and its X and Y components increased as the SEQ increased, and the PC gradually shifted toward the superonasal direction in young Asian adults with myopia. Translational Relevance: Subjects with high myopia with a larger pupil offset should be considered for better postoperative visual quality during refractive surgery.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare changes in asphericity of anterior and posterior corneal surfaces for different myopia patients after corneal topography-guided femtosecond-assisted laser in situ keratomileuses (FS-LASIK), and to analyze correlations between asphericity of corneal surfaces and preoperative spherical equivalence (SEQ). METHODS: In this prospective study, 59 patients who underwent corneal topography-guided FS-LASIK surgery were enrolled and divided into the mild-moderate myopia group (67 eyes) and the high myopia group (44 eyes). Postoperative follow-ups were performed at 1, 3, and 6 months. Postoperative changes in aspherical coefficient (Q values), corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs), and spherical aberrations (Z40) were compared between the two groups. Relevance between Q value changes and SEQ, HOAs, and Z40 as well as between SEQ and changes of HOAs and Z40 was analyzed. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in Q values of the anterior (each diameter) and posterior (6-8 mm) corneal surface in both groups than before surgery (P < 0.001). Q values of corneal anterior (each diameter) and posterior (7-9 mm) surface in the high group were considerably larger than the mild-moderate group (P < 0.05). Corneal anterior surface HOAs and Z40 values in the high group largely exceeded those of the mild-moderate group (P < 0.001). The preoperative SEQ was linearly correlated with postoperative anterior Q change (ΔQ), HOAs change (ΔHOAs), and spherical aberration change (ΔZ40). CONCLUSION: The changes of corneal asphericity in patients with high myopia were greater than mild-moderate myopia, with more corneal HOAs and Z40 introduced when corneal topography-guided FS-LASIK was conducted.

RESUMO

To reduce the feedstock-sourced heterogeneity of biochar, mushrooms, cultivated from lignocellulosic feedstocks (LFs), were used as precursors for biochar preparation. The coefficient of variation (CV) was adopted to show the homogeneity changes. In contrast to LFs, mushrooms produced relatively lower CVs in terms of elemental and proximate analysis. Furthermore, the CV of H/C (9.20%) and O/C (13.32%) of mushroom-based biochars (MRBCs) was lower than that of LF-based biochars (LFBCs), suggesting more homogeneous aromaticity and hydrophilicity. The relatively lower CV of the volatile matter (0.87%), fixed carbon (0.45%), and ash (2.44%) of MRBCs suggested an improvement in the homogeneity of chemical components. The homogenized physical structure was reflected in the lack of a difference in pore characteristics of MRBCs. The lower CVs (1.89-14.82%) for the pollutant adsorption of MRBCs, implied more stable performance. In conclusion, converting LFs to mushrooms reduced the precursor's heterogeneity, consequently homogenizing the biochar's properties and performance.

RESUMO

Tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2) plays a crucial role in the human brain. Although the association between the TPH2 gene and depression has been suggested in previous meta-analyses, studies based on Chinese subjects are often neglected. Therefore, we included some previous studies based on Chinese subjects to explore the relationship between TPH2 polymorphisms and depression via conducting an extensive meta-analysis. We reviewed 40 research papers that included data on TPH2 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 5766 patients with depression and 5988 healthy subjects. The analysis showed an association between polymorphisms in the TPH2 gene and depression, and some results were significant in 24 studies that included Chinese Han study participants. The results of our meta-analysis showed that rs4570625, rs17110747, rs120074175, rs4290270, rs120074175, and rs4290270 may be significantly associated with depression, and that rs11178997 (A/A genotype) may be a significant risk factor for depression in the Chinese subjects. Based on the results of this study, biological experiments should be performed in the future to explore how different SNPs affect depression.

RESUMO

In order to seek a possible path for utilization bottom ash, the solid waste from biomass incineration for power generation, its basic characteristics were investigated, and removing methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution was attempted as well. Results indicated bottom ash dominantly contained Si and Ca-related minerals with >35 mineral elements, meanwhile, it was typically characterized by alkalinity (pH of 9.5) and low specific surface area (14.5m2/g). As the only bottom ash was employed for removing MB, removal efficiency was lower than 44%, however, it was greatly improved to 100% as hydrogen peroxide was supplemented (final concentration of 4.0%). Based on the elucidated mechanisms, Fenton-like reaction was triggered by bottom ash, which was dominantly responsible for removing MB, rather than the adsorption by bottom ash. Besides, increasing reaction temperature and duration dramatically promoted MB removal by bottom ash with the aid of hydrogen peroxide (HBA). A great promotion on MB removal from 92.3mg/g to 143.9mg/g was achieved as pH was adjusted from 2.0 to 5.0, indicating MB removal was pH-dependent. The maximum removal of 260.9mg/g was achieved by HBA at a relatively high initial MB concentration of 2000.0mg/L, suggesting a great potential in treating dye wastewater by functionalizing bottom ash with the aid of hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, the released heavy metals and derived by-products from MB removal were acceptable in consideration of their potential environmental risks. Thus, the current work offers a new path to valorize the solid waste in biomass electricity generation plant.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of SH2-Caspase 8 fusion protein expressed by recombinant adenovirus AdE-SH2-Caspase8-HA-GFP (SC) on the apoptosis of K562/G01 cell line, which is a BCR/ABL positive chronic myeloid leukemia cell line and resistant to imatinib. METHODS: The K562/G01 cell line was infected with AdE-SH2-Caspase 8-HA-GFP adenovirus (SC), then the cells were divided into 3 groups: AdE-SH2m-Caspase 8-HA-GFP (SmC) group, AdE-GFP (CMV) group and PBS group as control. The infection efficiency was observed under fluorescent microscopy and by flow cytometry. The expression of fusion protein SH2-Caspase 8-HA was measured by Western blot. The morphology of the cells detected by Wright's staining. The apoptosis of the cells were detected by flow cytometry and DNA ladder. The expression of Caspase 3 and PARP were detected by Western blot. RESULT: The infection efficiency of SC on K562/G01 cells was high which was confirmed by fluorescent microscopy and FCM. SH2-Caspase 8-HA fusion protein were expressed correctly in K562/G01 cells. After treatment with SC the apoptosis of K562/G01 cells could be observed by microscopy. The result of FCM showed that early apoptosis of K562/G01 cells increased significantly as compared with control groups (P < 0.05). DNA ladder showed that the classic DNA ladders appeared in K562/G01 cells after treatment with SC. The wester blot detection showed that the expression level of apoptosis-related protein Caspase 3 and PARP increased. CONCLUSION: The recombinant adenovirus SC expressing SH2-Caspase 8 fusion protein can induces the apoptosis of K562/G01 cells.

RESUMO

To estimate the relationship between heat stress during the last 60 days prepartum, body condition score and certain reproductive traits in the subsequent lactation of Holstein cows, 564 multiparous cows and 290 primiparous cows from four dairy herds were used in a hot, humid region. Maximum prepartum degree days were estimated to quantify the degree of heat stress. Multiple regressions analyses and logistic regression analysis were performed to determine the effect of prepartum heat stress and body condition change on reproductive parameters, which were obtained from DHIA forms at the end of the lactation. Multiparous and primiparous cows which gained body condition score from calving to 60 d postpartum exhibited 28 and 27 fewer days open (P < 0.05), respectively, than cows not gaining. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of heat stress measurement on days open or services per conception in either multiparous or primiparous cows. During hotter months of calving, multiparous cows showed higher services per conception and primiparous cows showed higher days open and services per conception (P < 0.05). Maximum prepartum degree-days were positively associated (P < 0.05) with calving difficulty score. Multiparous cows with high body condition score at calving were 1.47 times more likely to present a very difficult calving than cows that calved in October (P < 0.05). Collectively, these results suggest that reproductive performance was not affected by cumulative prepartum heat stress although it was associated with very difficult calving score.
