In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), based on various pathogenic symptoms and the 'golden chamber' medical text, Huangdi Neijing, diabetes mellitus falls under the category 'collateral disease'. TCM, with its wealth of experience, has been treating diabetes for over two millennia. Different antidiabetic Chinese herbal medicines reduce blood sugar, with their effective ingredients exerting unique advantages. As well as a glucose lowering effect, TCM also regulates bodily functions to prevent diabetes associated complications, with reduced side effects compared to western synthetic drugs. Chinese herbal medicine is usually composed of polysaccharides, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids. These active ingredients reduce blood sugar via various mechanism of actions that include boosting endogenous insulin secretion, enhancing insulin sensitivity and adjusting key enzyme activity and scavenging free radicals. These actions regulate glycolipid metabolism in the body, eventually achieving the goal of normalizing blood glucose. Using different animal models, a number of molecular markers are available for the detection of diabetes induction and the molecular pathology of the disease is becoming clearer. Nonetheless, there is a dearth of scientific data about the pharmacology, dose-effect relationship, and structure-activity relationship of TCM and its constituents. Further research into the efficacy, toxicity and mode of action of TCM, using different metabolic and molecular markers, is key to developing novel TCM antidiabetic formulations.

Photodetectors based on two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) heterostructures with high detectivity and rapid response have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation imaging applications. However, the practical application of currently studied 2D vdW heterostructures faces challenges related to insufficient light absorption and inadequate separation of photocarriers. To address these challenges, we present a sandwiched WS2/MoTe2/WS2 heterostructure with a completely depleted interlayer, integrated on a mirror electrode, for a highly efficient photodetector. This well-designed structure enhances light-matter interactions while facilitating effective separation and rapid collection of photocarriers. The resulting photodetector exhibits a broadband photoresponse spanning from deep ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths. When operated in self-powered mode, the device demonstrates an exceptional response speed of 22/34 µs, along with an impressive detectivity of 8.27 × 1010 Jones under 635 nm illumination. Additionally, by applying a bias voltage of -1 V, the detectivity can be further increased to 1.49 × 1012 Jones, while still maintaining a rapid response speed of 180/190 µs. Leveraging these outstanding performance metrics, high-resolution visible-near-infrared light imaging has been successfully demonstrated using this device. Our findings provide valuable insights into the optimization of device architecture for diverse photoelectric applications.

Heavy metals, including Hg2+, Cr6+ and Cd2+, have always been a major issue in environmental pollution, leading to abnormal changes in the levels of biologically active molecules including Cys in plants, seriously affecting all aspects of the growth and development of plants. This makes it essential to develop a simple and practical method to study the potential impact of heavy metals on plants. In this paper, our research group has developed near-infrared fluorescent probe WRM-S, which has the advantages of fast response, sensitivity to Cys, and successfully applying it to cells and zebrafish. Moreover, it combined the close relationship between heavy metal stress on plants and Cys, using Cys as the detection target, monitoring the internal environment changes of two plants under Hg2+, Cr6+, and Cd2+ stress in the environment, and then conducting 3D imaging. The results indicated that the probe has strong penetration ability in plant tissues, and revealed abnormal changes in plant Cys levels caused by heavy metal stress-induced cellular oxidative stress or cytotoxicity. Thus, the in-situ imaging detection of this probe provides a direction for the physiological dynamics research of plant environmental stress.

In this study, the differences in the modification effects and related mechanisms of different times (20 and 40 min) of autoclaved heat (AH) treatment and different doses (2 and 4 kGy) of electron beam irradiation (EBI) in different sequences of effects on acorn starch were investigated. The results showed that both AH and EBI reduced the amylose content (22.70 to 19.59%) and enthalpy (10.28 to 1.84%) of starch but increased the resistant starch content (53.69 to 64.11%). AH treatment made the crystalline regions of the residual starch granules denser, which was resistant to the action of amylase enzymes. EBI degraded the long chain of starch, which increased the solubility. Notably, EBI pretreatment improves the reactive sites by inducing depolymerization and disorder in starch internal structure, thus increasing the modification extent of AH-modified starch, forming starch with lower viscosity, better hydration, and digestibility resistance, therefore being used as an ingredient for functional foods.

Aiming to investigate the changes and effects of different particle sizes of wheat A/B starch during dough fermentation, the present study reconstituted A/B starch fractions in ratios of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100, further blended with gluten and subjected to slight (20 min), medium (30 min), and high (60 min) fermentation processes by yeasts. Results showed that fermentation gas production promoted gluten network extension, inducing starch granule exposure and dough surface roughness. Also, fermentation fractured protein intermolecular disulfide bonds and decreased α-helix and ß-folded structure content, contributing to GMP, LPP, and SPP content decreases. Moreover, moderately increasing the B-starch ratio in the dough can improve gluten network stability, continuity, and air-holding capacity. The 25A-75B steam bread exhibited optimal processing suitability (better morphology, texture, and quality) due to its higher GMP and polymer protein content with lower free sulfhydryl and monomeric protein content. Further, conformational relationships indicated the key indicators influencing dough products' properties were free sulfhydryl content, GMP content, protein molecular weight distribution, and secondary structure. The obtained findings contributed to understanding the effect of wheat starch granule size distribution on dough processing behavior, and future targeted breeding for wheat cultivars with high B-starch content for improved fermentation pasta product qualities.

The development of efficient, safe, environmentally friendly, and user-friendly hemostatic dressings remains a great challenge for researchers. A variety of clay minerals and plant extracts have garnered considerable attention due to their outstanding hemostatic efficacy and favorable biosafety. In this study, a facile solution casting strategy was employed to prepare nanocomposite films by incorporating natural nanorod-like palygorskite (Pal) and herb-derived hemostat dencichine (DC) based on chitosan and polyvinylpyrrolidone. The dynamic blood clotting index demonstrated that the nanocomposite film with a DC addition of 1.0 wt% exhibited significantly superior hemostatic properties compared to both pure DC powder or commercial hemostatic agent Yunnan Baiyao. This improvement was primarily attributed to proper blood affinity, increased porosity, enhanced adhesion of platelets and erythrocytes, as well as the accelerated activation of coagulation factors and platelets. Under the synergistic effect of Pal and DC, the nanocomposite film displayed suitable tensile strength (20.58 MPa) and elongation at break (47.29 %), which may be due to the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction between Pal/DC and macropolymers. Notably, the nanocomposite film exhibited remarkable antibacterial effectiveness and desirable cytocompatibility, as well as the capability of promoting wound healing in vitro. Taken together, the nanocomposite film synergized with Pal and DC is expected to be an efficacious and suitable wound dressing.

The transcriptome complexity and splicing patterns in male and female cattle are ambiguous, presenting a substantial obstacle to genomic selection programs that seek to improve productivity, disease resistance, and reproduction in cattle. A comparative transcriptomic analysis using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) was conducted in bovine testes (TESTs), ovaries (OVAs), muscles (MUSCs), and livers (LIVs). An average of 5,144,769 full-length reads were obtained from each sample. The TESTs were found to have the greatest number of alternative polyadenylation (APA) events involved in processes such as sperm flagellum development and fertilization in male reproduction. In total, 438 differentially expressed transcripts (DETs) were identified in the LIVs in a comparison of females vs. males, and 214 DETs were identified in the MUSCs between females and males. Additionally, 14,735, 36,347, and 33,885 DETs were detected in MUSC vs. LIV, MUSC vs. TEST, and OVA vs. TEST comparisons, respectively, revealing the complexity of the TEST. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) showed that these DETs were mainly involved in the "spermatogenesis", "flagellated sperm motility", "spermatid development", "reproduction", "reproductive process", and "microtubule-based movement" KEGG pathways. Additional studies are necessary to further characterize the transcriptome in different cell types, developmental stages, and physiological conditions in bovines and ascertain the functions of the novel transcripts.

Isoliquiritigenin (ISL) is a chalcone that has shown great potential in the treatment of cancer. However, its relatively weak activity and low water solubility limit its clinical application. In this study, we designed and synthesized 21 amino acid ester derivatives of ISL and characterized the compounds using 1H NMR and 13C NMR. Among them, compound 9 (IC50 = 14.36 µM) had a better inhibitory effect on human cervical cancer (Hela) than ISL (IC50 = 126.5 µM), and it was superior to the positive drug 5-FU (IC50 = 33.59 µM). The mechanism of the action experiment showed that compound 9 could induce Hela cell apoptosis and autophagy through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway.

With the aim of effectively improving the performance of bio-friendly food packaging and circumventing the hazards associated with petroleum-based plastic food packaging, composite films of corn starch and polyvinyl alcohol were prepared using a new method that involved chemical cross-linking of glutaraldehyde and blending with cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsion (CNE). Glutaraldehyde and CNE enhance the film's network structure by chemical bonding and hydrogen bonding, respectively. This results in improved surface smoothness, mechanical properties, and UV shielding ability of the film. However, the films' surface hydrophilicity increased as a result of CNE, which is harmful for food preservation in high humidity. Overall, glutaraldehyde and CNE have a synergistic effect on some of the properties of the film which is mainly attributed to the films' structure improvement. The films have great potential for preparing flexible and UV-shielding films and offer new ideas for developing biodegradable films.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the pharmacological activity and therapeutic mechanism of Dahuang Mudan Decotion (DHMDD) for colorectal cancer using ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), network pharmacology and in vitro experiments. Methods: The chemical components of DHMDD were identified by UPLC-MS. Network pharmacological analysis was utilized to screen the active ingredients and targets associated with DHMDD for colorectal cancer. Based on the results of network pharmacology, the potential mechanism of DHMDD on colorectal cancer predicted was experimentally studied and verified in vitro. Results: DHMDD primarily exerts its effects on colorectal cancer through 52 active ingredients. AKT1, ESR1, HSP90AA1, JUN, PIK3CA, PIK3CB, PIK3R1, SRC, STAT3, TP53 were the top 10 targets. The top 10 ingredient nodes were Quercetin, Physcione, Pontigenin, Crysophanol, Linolenic acid, Piceatannol, Adenosine, Emodin, Sambunigrin, and Prunasin. The main compounds and the target proteins exhibited strong binding ability in molecular docking studies. The results of cell experiments demonstrated that DHMDD can inhibit the proliferation, invasion and migration of CRC cells through the PI3K/Akt pathway. Conclusion: Through network pharmacology analysis and cell experiments, this study suggests that DHMDD can exert its therapeutic effects on colorectal cancer through a combination of multiple components and targets.

A motor imagery brain-computer interface connects the human brain and computers via electroencephalography (EEG). However, individual differences in the frequency ranges of brain activity during motor imagery tasks pose a challenge, limiting the manual feature extraction for motor imagery classification. To extract features that match specific subjects, we proposed a novel motor imagery classification model using distinctive feature fusion with adaptive structural LASSO. Specifically, we extracted spatial domain features from overlapping and multi-scale sub-bands of EEG signals and mined discriminative features by fusing the task relevance of features with spatial information into the adaptive LASSO-based feature selection. We evaluated the proposed model on public motor imagery EEG datasets, demonstrating that the model has excellent performance. Meanwhile, ablation studies and feature selection visualization of the proposed model further verified the great potential of EEG analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dendrobium officinale flos (DOF), a novel food raw material, is used in Chinese folk medicine to nourish the stomach. However, there is still no available study to evaluate the effects of DOF on animal models of acute gastric injury and its mechanism by modern pharmacological research. RESULTS: Herein, we characterized the major components of an aqueous extract of DOF and assessed its potential ameliorative effects in a rat model of acute gastric mucosal injury. The DOF water extract showed significant protective effects on the gastric mucosa and exhibited excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Acute gastric injury rat models induced by ethanol (6 mL kg-1) were pretreated with different doses of DOF water extract (50-100 mg kg-1 day-1), and the biological effects of DOF extract in gastric tissues were evaluated. DOF extract alleviated the symptoms of ethanol-stimulated acute gastric mucosal injury, as evidenced by a significant reduction in gastric injury index and the degree of gastric pathological changes. Additionally, treatment with DOF extract upregulated mucin expression in the gastric mucosa, attenuated oxidative stress, decreased the release of inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-6), suppressed the expression of key proinflammatory enzymes (COX-2 and iNOS), reduced the phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and p65 NF-κB and increased the level of PGE2 in gastric tissues. CONCLUSION: DOF exerts protective effects against ethanol-induced acute gastric mucosal injury, mainly by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are eco-friendly cementitious materials that can partially replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The occurrence of early-age cracking in OPC-SCM blended cement is a significant factor impacting the mechanical properties and durability of the concrete. This article presents a comprehensive review of the existing research on cracking in OPC-SCM concrete mix at early ages. To assess the effects of SCMs on the early-age cracking of concrete, the properties of blended cement-based concrete, in terms of its viscoelastic behavior, evolution of mechanical performance, and factors that affect the risk of cracking in concrete at early ages, are reviewed. The use of SCMs in OPC-SCM concrete mix can be an effective method for mitigating early-age cracking while improving the properties and durability of concrete structures. Previous research showed that the shrinkage and creep of OPC-SCM concrete mix are lower than those of conventional concrete. Moreover, the lower cement content of OPC-SCM concrete mix resulted in a better resistance to thermal cracking. Proper selection, proportioning, and implementation of SCMs in concrete can help to optimize the performance and reduce the environmental impact of OPC-SCM concrete mix.

Background: Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August 2017 and resulted in catastrophic flooding in Houston, Texas. Prior studies of hurricanes and preterm birth have found conflicting results. We tested the hypotheses that exposure to Hurricane Harvey was associated with a higher risk of spontaneous pre- and early-term birth and assessed vulnerable subpopulations. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of singleton births using administrative birth records in the nine-county greater Houston area from 2015 to 2019. We estimated the likelihood of pre- and early-term births using logistic regression, comparing births occurring during or within 1, 2, or 4 weeks of Hurricane Harvey to unexposed reference periods encompassing the same dates 2 years prior and after. Stratified models assessed effect modification by degree of flooding, birth parent age, high- vs. low-risk pregnancy, race/ethnicity, and prenatal care. Results: Among 15,564 births, we found no association between exposure to Hurricane Harvey and spontaneous preterm birth within 1 week adjusted (odds ratio [OR], 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.91, 1.25) but a 14% higher odds of spontaneous early-term birth (OR, 1.14; 95% CI = 1.04, 1.25). The odds of early-term birth were even higher in neighborhoods with severe flooding (OR, 1.21; 95% CI = 1.05, 1.38), segregated neighborhoods (OR, 1.23; 95% CI = 1.03, 1.47), and among foreign-born Hispanics (OR, 1.21; 95% CI = 1.04, 1.53) and pregnant people receiving no prenatal care (OR, 1.37; 95% CI = 1.03, 1.82). Effect estimates were attenuated or null when considering 2-week or 4-week lags to define exposure. Conclusions: Hurricane Harvey was associated with higher odds of spontaneous early-term birth up to 1 week later, especially among socially marginalized populations.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), a predominant pathogen in lung infections, poses significant challenges due to its biofilm formation, which is the primary cause of chronic and recalcitrant pulmonary infections. Bacteria within these biofilms exhibit heightened resistance to antibiotics compared to their planktonic counterparts, and their secreted toxins exacerbate lung infections. Diverging from traditional antibacterial therapy for biofilm eradication, this study introduces a novel dry powder inhalation containing muco-inert ciprofloxacin and colistin co-encapsulated liposomes (Cipro-Col-Lips) prepared using ultrasonic spray freeze drying (USFD) technique. This USFD dry powder is designed to efficiently deliver muco-inert Cipro-Col-Lips to the lungs. Once deposited, the liposomes rapidly diffuse into the airway mucus, reaching the biofilm sites. The muco-inert Cipro-Col-Lips neutralize the biofilm-secreted toxins and simultaneously trigger the release of their therapeutic payload, exerting a synergistic antibiofilm effect. Our results demonstrated that the optimal USFD liposomal dry powder formulation exhibited satisfactory in vitro aerosol performance in terms of fine particle fraction (FPF) of 44.44 ± 0.78 %, mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of 4.27 ± 0.21 µm, and emitted dose (ED) of 99.31 ± 3.31 %. The muco-inert Cipro-Col-Lips effectively penetrate the airway mucus and accumulate at the biofilm site, neutralizing toxins and safeguarding lung cells. The triggered release of ciprofloxacin and colistin works synergistically to reduce the biofilm's antibiotic resistance, impede the development of antibiotic resistance, and eliminate 99.99 % of biofilm-embedded bacteria, including persister bacteria. Using a PA-beads induced biofilm-associated lung infection mouse model, the in vivo efficacy of this liposomal dry powder aerosol was tested, and the results demonstrated that this liposomal dry powder aerosol achieved a 99.7 % reduction in bacterial colonization, and significantly mitigated inflammation and pulmonary fibrosis. The USFD dry powder inhalation containing muco-inert Cipro-Col-Lips emerges as a promising therapeutic strategy for treating PA biofilm-associated lung infections.

BACKGROUND: Vasculopathy is the most common complication of diabetes. Endothelial cells located in the innermost layer of blood vessels are constantly affected by blood flow or vascular components; thus, their mechanosensitivity plays an important role in mediating vascular regulation. Endothelial damage, one of the main causes of hyperglycemic vascular complications, has been extensively studied. However, the role of mechanosensitive signaling in hyperglycemic endothelial damage remains unclear. METHODS: Vascular endothelial-specific Piezo1 knockout mice were generated to investigate the effects of Piezo1 on Streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia and vascular endothelial injury. In vitro activation or knockdown of Piezo1 was performed to evaluate the effects on the proliferation, migration, and tubular function of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in high glucose. Reactive oxygen species production, mitochondrial membrane potential alternations, and oxidative stress-related products were used to assess the extent of oxidative stress damage caused by Piezo1 activation. RESULTS: Our study found that in VECreERT2;Piezo1flox/flox mice with Piezo1 conditional knockout in vascular endothelial cells, Piezo1 deficiency alleviated streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia with reduced apoptosis and abscission of thoracic aortic endothelial cells, and decreased the inflammatory response of aortic tissue caused by high glucose. Moreover, the knockout of Piezo1 showed a thinner thoracic aortic wall, reduced tunica media damage, and increased endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression in transgenic mice, indicating the relief of endothelial damage caused by hyperglycemia. We also showed that Piezo1 activation aggravated oxidative stress injury and resulted in severe dysfunction through the Ca2+-induced CaMKII-Nrf2 axis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. In Piezo1 conditional knockout mice, Piezo1 deficiency partially restored superoxide dismutase activity and reduced malondialdehyde content in the thoracic aorta. Mechanistically, Piezo1 deficiency decreased CaMKII phosphorylation and restored the expression of Nrf2 and its downstream molecules HO-1 and NQO1. CONCLUSION: In summary, our study revealed that Piezo1 is involved in high glucose-induced oxidative stress injury and aggravated endothelial dysfunction, which have great significance for alleviating endothelial damage caused by hyperglycemia.

INTRODUCTION: Molnupiravir (MOV) is an oral antiviral for the treatment of individuals with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and at high risk of progression to severe disease. Our objective was to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) of evidence on the effectiveness of MOV in reducing the risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes in real-world outpatient settings. METHODS: The SLR was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines and using pre-determined population, intervention, comparison, outcome, time, and study design inclusion criteria. Eligible studies were published between January 1, 2021, and March 10, 2023, and evaluated the real-world effectiveness of MOV compared to no treatment in reducing the risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes among outpatients ≥ 18 years of age with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. RESULTS: Nine studies from five countries were included in the review. The size of the MOV-treated group ranged from 359 to 7818 individuals. Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 were dominant in all study periods. Most studies noted differences in the baseline characteristics of the MOV-treated and untreated control groups, with the treated groups generally being older and with more comorbidities. Eight studies reported that treatment with MOV was associated with a significantly reduced risk of at least one severe COVID-19 outcome in at least one age group, with greater benefits consistently observed among older age groups. CONCLUSIONS: In this SLR study, treatment with MOV was effective in reducing the risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19 caused by Omicron variants, especially for older individuals. Differences in the ages and baseline comorbidities of the MOV-treated and control groups may have led to underestimation of the effectiveness of MOV in many observational studies. Real-world studies published to date thus provide additional evidence supporting the continued benefits of MOV in non-hospitalized adults with COVID-19.


COVID-19 continues to be a major source of morbidity and mortality. Throughout the pandemic, many countries authorized various therapies for the treatment of individuals presenting with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and at high risk of progression to severe disease. Some of these therapies have since been rendered ineffective due to the emergence of Omicron variants in late 2021. The objective of the current study was to conduct a systematic literature review to assess real-world evidence on the effectiveness of molnupiravir, including effectiveness against COVID-19 caused by Omicron variants, to supplement the findings of the MOVe-OUT clinical trial and further inform on the potential clinical benefit and utility of this antiviral agent. Nine studies were included in the systematic literature review. We found that treatment with molnupiravir was effective in reducing the risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19 caused by Omicron variants, especially for older individuals. Differences in the ages and baseline comorbidities of the molnupiravir-treated and control groups may have led to underestimation of the effectiveness of molnupiravir in many observational studies. In summary, real-world effectiveness studies provide additional evidence supporting the continued benefits of molnupiravir in non-hospitalized adults with COVID-19.

Pickering foam is a type of foam stabilized by solid particles known as Pickering stabilizers. These solid stabilizers adsorb at the liquid-gas interface, providing superior stability to the foam. Because of its high stability, controllability, versatility, and minimal environmental impact, nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam has opened up new possibilities and development prospects for foam applications. This review provides an overview of the current state of development of Pickering foam stabilized by a wide range of nanomaterials, including cellulose nanomaterials, chitin nanomaterials, silica nanoparticles, protein nanoparticles, clay mineral, carbon nanotubes, calcium carbonate nanoparticles, MXene, and graphene oxide nanosheets. Particularly, the preparation and surface modification methods of various nanoparticles, the fundamental properties of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam, and the synergistic effects between nanoparticles and surfactants, functional polymers, and other additives are systematically introduced. In addition, the latest progress in the application of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam in the oil industry, food industry, porous functional material, and foam flotation field is highlighted. Finally, the future prospects of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam in different fields, along with directions for further research and development directions, are outlined.

OBJECTIVES: Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) can reduce the risk of incident diabetes, whereas the role of occupational physical activity (OPA) in developing diabetes is still unclear due to conflicting evidence. Moreover, the joint associations of OPA and LTPA with incident diabetes among US workers have not yet been systematically examined. The objective of this study was to assess the independent and joint associations of OPA and LTPA with incident diabetes. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 1406 workers free from diabetes at baseline (2004-2006) from the national, population-based Mid-life in the United States (MIDUS) study. Associations of OPA and LTPA at baseline with incident diabetes during 9 years of follow-up were examined using Poisson regression models. High OPA was defined based on engagement in physical demands at work, and high LTPA was defined as participation in moderate or vigorous LTPA at least once per week. RESULTS: High OPA was associated with an increased risk of diabetes compared to low OPA (adjusted risk ratios and 95% confidence interval = 1.52 [1.04, 2.22]), while high LTPA was associated with a decreased risk of diabetes compared to low LTPA (0.66 [0.44, 0.97]). Diabetes risk was the highest among workers with high OPA and low LTPA (2.30 [1.30, 4.07]). CONCLUSIONS: In a national, population-based prospective cohort study of US workers, high OPA was associated with an elevated risk of diabetes, while high LTPA was associated with a decreased diabetes risk. The combination of high OPA and low LTPA exhibited the greatest risk of diabetes.

Accurate and rapid monitoring of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) residues is crucial for regulating food safety. Herein, dual-emission carbon dots (de-CDs) were fabricated for the ratiometric detection of OPs and Hg2+. The de-CDs exhibited two emission peaks at 678 and 485 nm when excited with visible light. Interestingly, the fluorescence at 678 nm was significantly quenched by Hg2+ mainly because of the static quenching effect, whereas that at 485 nm exhibited a slight change. More significantly, the quenched fluorescence of the de-CDs recovered remarkably after introducing omethoate, diazinon and malathion. Accordingly, the ratiometric detection of the three OPs and Hg2+ was achieved with high selectivity and robust performance. In addition, the OPs residues assay in Brassica chinensis was successfully performed with satisfactory results. This study not only provides an attractive tool for the simple and rapid assay of OPs but also offers new insights into the fabrication of multi-functional carbon dots.
