RESUMO

PURPOSE: Patients treated with thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for traumatic thoracic aortic injury (TTAI) are often young and data on long-term durability of this treatment is not widely documented. The aims of this study were to report the New Zealand (NZ) national experience of TEVAR and to assess the durability of late outcomes and radiological follow-up of patients treated for TTAI. METHODS: Consecutive patients treated with TEVAR during a 12-year period from all tertiary centers in NZ were included. Early (30-day), late survival and radiological imaging data were recorded to document late graft-related complications and re-interventions. RESULTS: 88 patients with a median (range) age of 35 (15-87) year and 63 (71.6 %) males were included. Eleven patients (12.5 %) died within 30 days, of which three were aortic related deaths. The median (range) follow-up was 76.3 (0.3-164.6) months. Six (7.8 %) patients died during the follow-up period due to non-aortic-related causes. Nine (11.5 %) patients were lost to follow-up of which three emigrated overseas. Of those on surveillance, two patients required TEVAR re-intervention to previously treated aortic segments; one for a type 1b endoleak and the other for a symptomatic pseudo-coarctation. Both were treated successfully with a TEVAR. CONCLUSIONS: This multicenter study suggests that TEVAR is a durable option for treatment of traumatic thoracic aortic injury. Although, stent graft complications were uncommon, but when it occurred, it leads to re-intervention. Further radiological follow-up is required particularly in young patient to document late aortic/stent complications.

RESUMO

Rehabilitation with complete denture include among other objectives, improvement of facial and dental esthetics. To these ends, the artificial teeth should mimic as far as possible, healthy and natural dentition. The main objective of this study was to investigate factors associated with tooth color among black African subjects. One hundred and two subjects (72 men and 30 women) were included in this investigation. The colorimetric parameters of their teeth as well as those of the conjunctiva of their eyes and skin were recorded from standardized photographs. Two software, Mesurim and Photoshop were used for that purpose. Univariate and linear regression analysis were run to assess the association between tooth color and the variables age, gender and colorimetric parameters of eyes and skin. It appears from the result of this study that tooth color was positively and significantly associated with age. Stepwise multiple regression analysis further revealed that tooth hue can be best predicted by a combination of skin complexion and brightness and eye lightness.

RESUMO

Combining exquisite specificity and high antigen-binding affinity, intrabodies have been used as a biotechnological tool to interrupt, modulate, or define the functions of a wide range of target antigens at the posttranslational level. An intrabody is an antibody that has been designed to be expressed intracellularly and can be directed to a specific target antigen present in various subcellular locations including the cytosol, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), mitochondria, peroxisomes, plasma membrane and trans-Golgi network (TGN) through in frame fusion with intracellular trafficking/localization peptide sequences. Although intrabodies can be expressed in different forms, the most commonly used format is a singlechain antibody (scFv Ab) created by joining the antigen-binding variable domains of heavy and light chain with an interchain linker (ICL), most often the 15 amino acid linker (GGGGS)(3) between the variable heavy (VH) and variable light (VL) chains. Intrabodies have been used in research of cancer, HIV, autoimmune disease, neurodegenerative disease, and transplantation. Clinical application of intrabodies has mainly been hindered by the availability of robust gene delivery system(s) including target cell directed gene delivery. This review will discuss several methods of intrabody selection, different strategies of cellular targeting, and recent successful examples of intrabody applications. Taking advantage of the high specificity and affinity of an antibody for its antigen, and of the virtually unlimited diversity of antigen-binding variable domains available for molecular targeting, intrabody techniques are emerging as promising tools to generate phenotypic knockouts, to manipulate biological processes, and to obtain a more thorough understanding of functional genomics.

RESUMO

The occurrence of SARS in March 2003 has resulted in an increased interest, worldwide in emerging infectious diseases. The SARS experience provided us a lesson on the importance of promoting hygienic practices among individuals and different working sectors. In Hong Kong, a voluntary organization called the UNITE proposed a Hygiene Charter which aimed at taking hygiene to new levels. This action has been supported by individuals and different sectors including the Personal and Family, Management, Buildings, Catering, Education, Finance and Commercial, Industrial, Medical and Health, Public Transportation, Social Welfare, Sports and Culture and Tourism. As promotion and maintenance of environmental health requires input from different sectors, the signing of the Hygiene Charter provides an opportunity for individuals and the public to show their pledge and commitment to good hygiene practices. As a result, with environment improvement and good infectious disease control measures, prevention of epidemics of infectious diseases is deemed to be possible.

RESUMO

This paper reports the prevalence rate of hepatitis B antigen (HBsAg) amongst the Hong Kong Chinese adolescents (age 11 to 19), and the risk factors associated with HBsAg positive. The study is cross sectional and 1,580 students were randomly selected from 12 secondary schools in four regions of Hong Kong. For those subjects who agreed to participate and were randomly selected, their blood was tested for HBsAg and anti-HBs. The overall prevalence of HBsAg positive was reported to be 5.8% (7.9% in male and 4.1% in female), lower than 8.1% in 1978. Males, those born in Mainland China and family history of carriers had higher prevalence of HBsAg positive (7.9% vs 4.1%, 12.2% vs 4.7%, 52.9% vs 3.8% respectively) with statistical significance. Males and those born in mainland China were found to have significantly higher odds ratio 1.8 (95% CI. 0.98-3.52) and 4.4 (95% CI. 2.2-8.8) respectively of HBsAg positive by multivariate analysis. Findings suggest that family history of carriers and those born in endemic area are at a higher risk. Therefore it is worthwhile to consider vaccination programme for adolescents to reduce the carrier rate, and to also reduce the injection amongst the adults by horizontal transmission.

RESUMO

Compartmentalization of human cytosolic malate dehydrogenase, hcMDH, together with its isozyme partner-mitochondrial form, hmMDH, plays an important role in the aerobic metabolism of the malate-aspartate shuttle and the citric acid cycle. However, they share few structural homology at the molecular level. The pseudogenes of mMDH has been reported in mice but hcMDH has no pseudogenes as shown by Southern blot analysis. A single band only was detected for the EcoRI digestion with 9.4 kb long of human genomic DNA and HindIII cutting with 2.8 kb long. hcMDH gene was mapped to chromosome 2 by somatic cell hybrid analysis and further localised to 268.72 cR from the top telomere of Chromosome 2 (near 2p15) by radiation hybrid mapping. The genes falling into this region may be related to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), several types of cancers and immunoregulation mechanism of cancers.
