RESUMO

Three thousand four hundred eighty-five BCG scar negative school children were given tuberculin test. Results showed very little non-specific reactions, suggesting BCG should produce high levels of protection in our population.

RESUMO

Triple therapy was given to 49 chronic helicobacter pylori positive chronic duodenal ulcer cases to see its efficacy in H. pylori clearance, eradication and ulcer healing. H. pylori clearance and eradication rates at week 5 and 8 were 87.8% and 81.5% while ulcer healing rates 68.2% and 81.5% respectively. Seven (18%) cases failed to clear H. pylori and were classified as non-responders. Histologically 60% showed post-treatment regression of gastritis. Tolerance to drugs was excellent with a good compliance rate.

RESUMO

Frequency of byssinosis in 276 workers from 5 ginning factories of rural Sindh are described. Twenty-four (9%) had byssinosis, 178 were asymptomatic and the remaining 74 had other respiratory symptoms. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was present both in symptomatic and asymptomatic workers and was equally distributed amongst smokers and non-smokers. A possible involvement of some factors other than cigarette smoking is discussed.

RESUMO

To determine the frequency of giardiasis in patients undergoing upper G.I. endoscopy for dyspepsia and other upper G.I. disorders, duodenal aspirates were collected in 200 patients and simultaneous duodenal biopsies in 163 patients. Nine percent aspirates and 1.8% duodenal biopsies showed Giardia lamblia trophozoites. Giardia as a cause of dyspepsia should be considered in patients with negative endoscopy and in those who remain symptomatic inspite of adequate treatment for known upper G.I. disorders.

RESUMO

Serum electrophoresis was done in 31 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and 62 age and sex matched controls. Protein values amongst controls were higher than those described by others. In tuberculosis there was significant decrease in total proteins, and albumin with corresponding increase in globulin, mainly due to an increase in gamma globulin fraction. There was no significant increase in alpha-2 levels. Decrease in albumin/alpha-2 ratio was significant in sputum positive cases, but it was due to reduction in albumin rather than increase in alpha-2 globulin. Decrease in albumin/alpha-2 ratio in this study was not diagnostic of tubercular activity.

RESUMO

A study of the immunogenicity and safety of 20 micrograms recombinant DNA yeast derived hepatitis B vaccine was conducted in 153 Pakistani adults. All participants were in good physical condition, had negative hepatitis B serological markers (HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc) and normal ALT. Anti-HBs developed in 33%, 81% and 98% of subjects one month after the first, second and third dose respectively. Minor systemic and local side-effects were observed in 39% of individuals. We conclude that yeast derived hepatitis B vaccine is safe, effective and immunogenic in Pakistani adults.

RESUMO

To determine the presenting features and prognosis of nonalcoholic cirrhosis, retrospective analysis was done in 145 cases. Of the total, 48 patients (33%) belonged to the young (less than or equal to 35 years), and 97 (67%) to the adult age group (greater than 35 years) with no predominance of either sex. The etiology of cirrhosis and the positivity of viral markers were similar in both groups. Adults had on presentation a higher frequency of anorexia while hematemesis was more frequent in the young group (p less than 0.001). During a mean follow-up (+/- SE) of 31.7 +/- 5.5 and 16.3 +/- 2.2 months in the young and adult group, respectively, 68 and 63% cases survived 5 years. Liver failure (53.8 and 44.4%) and variceal bleeding (23 and 11.1%) were the main causes of death in both groups, accounting for 27% mortality in each group.
