RESUMO

A modest sol-gel method has been employed to prepare the pure and Ag doped MnO2 nanoparticles and methodologically studied their physical, morphological, and photosensitive properties through XRD, TEM, EDAX, Raman, UV, PL and N2 adsorption - desorption study. Tetragonal crystalline arrangement with spherical nanoparticles was found out through XRD and TEM studies. The EDAX studies further supported that formation Ag in the MnO2 crystal matrix. The bandgap energy of Ag doped MnO2 was absorbed through UV spectra. Photo -generated recombination process and surface related defects were further recognized by PL spectra. Through visible light irradiation, the photo - degradation of methyl orange (MO) and phenol dye solutions were observed. The optimum condition of (10 wt% of Ag) Ag doped MnO2 catalyst showed tremendous photocatalytic efficiency towards MO than phenol under same experimental study.

RESUMO

The Indian major carps Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala were immunised against the potent bacterial fish pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila by the intraperitoneal route, in field conditions. Two different polyvalent antigen preparations namely, whole cell and extracellular products (ECP) were used. Immunisation schedule consisting of a single booster dose given 28 days after priming resulted in a good agglutinating antibody response in the carps. Kinetics of the response were similar in the three carp species with both whole cell and ECP. Upon challenge with virulent strains, relative percent survival as high as 80-90% was recorded. Indian major carps are the most important freshwater species cultured in India and it is essential that they are protected against infections of A. hydrophila, a scourge of freshwater fish worldwide.

RESUMO

A small number of serotypically distinct strains of A. hydrophila obtained from diseased freshwater fish were examined for their pathogenic properties comprising of cell surface characteristics and extracellular toxins. Test strains exhibited homogeneity in their cell surface characteristics despite being serologically heterogeneous. Studies on extracellular biological activities revealed qualitative and quantitative differences in production of toxins, probably explaining their antigenic diversity. Three distinct proteases, namely heat stable metallo protease, heat labile serine protease and heat labile metallo protease were identified from the strains.

RESUMO

The effect of azadirachtin, a triterpenoid derived from Azadirachta indica on the immune response was studied in the freshwater teleost, O. mossambicus. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) were used as antigens to evoke immune response. The immune responses in fish were measured by quantifying antibodies produced and counting the peripheral blood leucocytes in control and experimental fish. In general, azadirachtin significantly enhanced the antibody response and leucocyte count in a dose dependent manner. An inverse relationship was observed between the dose of azadirachtin and the degree of immunostimulation. Timing of azadirachtin administration in relation to immunization revealed that the maximum enhancement of antibody response was observed when the stimulant was given two days prior to immunization. The observed immunostimulatory property of azadirachtin has an implication in the maintenance of finfish health in freshwater intensive aquaculture practices.
