RESUMO

Generative encoding contexts promote activation of multiple retrieval routes and have been shown to enhance free-recall rates of individuals without mental retardation. The present extension to individuals with mental retardation involved a comparison of two encoding conditions: (a) fade-in, initially presenting pictures out of focus then slowly fading them into focus, and (b) fade-out, presenting pictures clearly then slowly blurring them. Results indicated that free-recall rates were greater for the fade-in items for the individuals with mental retardation and CA-matched comparisons, but not for the MA-matched group. These findings demonstrate the utility of a generative encoding context that does not involve verbal instruction for individuals with and without mental retardation.

RESUMO

The ability to interpret nonverbal facial cues was tested with 20 depressed males prior to treatment. Each subject and matched control was asked to interpret videotaped facial cues of individuals engaged in a gambling task. Interpretive ability was significantly lower for the nontreated depressed white men than for their matched controls.

RESUMO

The effects of buspirone in treating cocaine and phencyclidine (PCP) withdrawal were studied. Withdrawal symptoms of these two street-drugs are thought to be due to norepinephrine, dopamine and possibly serotonin depletion. Buspirone acts by enhancing dopaminergic and noradrenergic firing as well by suppressing serotonergic activity. Thirty-two cocaine abusers and 24 PCP abusers were withdrawn over a 30-day period. Half of each group received buspirone 10 mg t.i.d. and the other half 10 mg placebo t.i.d. In the cocaine group, buspirone was significantly more effective from the fifth day onward. In the PCP group, significant improvement was seen on the thirtieth day. Delayed effectiveness in PCP is thought due to its actions at other neurotransmitter sites.

RESUMO

The relationship between route of cocaine administration, that is, free base/crack smoking (FB), intravenous injection (IV), and nasal insufflation (NS) and level of violence was studied. The authors hypothesized that the route that produced the most intense effects (i.e., FB > IV > NS) would produce the highest level of violence. Over a 12-month period, 194 cocaine users were screened. After excluding polydrug users, 101 patients of both sexes participated in this study for the evaluation of expressions of violence. Evaluations were conducted by a structured questionnaire. The order of level of increased violence matched that of the most "intense" route of administration for some measures only. FB and IV use generally produced the same level of violence for most measurements. Both FB and IV routes produced more violence than NS. Violent actions requiring sustained activity (e.g., rape, burglary, and armed robbery) showed no relationship to route. The difference in levels in violence between males and females varied according to circumstance, not route of administration.

RESUMO

The authors studied the effects of clonidine on a subgroup of women who had symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome; the subgroup comprised 24 women aged 19 to 41 years who had "moderate" to "severe" cyclic decreases in beta-endorphin levels. All of the women received clonidine and placebo in a double-blind cross-over design that spanned four menstrual cycles. Clonidine was significantly (p less than .05) more effective than placebo in reducing symptoms.

RESUMO

A year-long double-blind cross-over study was used to compare the long-term therapeutic effects of lithium versus verapamil in a group of 20 manic volunteers. Subjects received each medication for six months. Before cross-over, verapamil patients showed a significant improvement after 60 days, lithium-treated patients after 180 days. After cross-over, verapamil-treated subjects showed improvement at day 240. Lithium-treated patients showed no improvement after cross-over. The data indicate that verapamil may be effective as an agent in the maintenance treatment of manic patients.

RESUMO

The authors studied 40 white men with acute phencyclidine (PCP) intoxication. On a random basis, 10 were treated with ascorbic acid, 10 with placebo, 10 with haloperidol, and 10 with a combination of ascorbic acid and haloperidol. While haloperidol was significantly more effective than ascorbic acid, the combination was significantly more effective than either used alone. This combination may have a specific antipsychotic role in the emergency treatment of PCP psychosis.

RESUMO

The TRH stimulation test was administered to 10 cocaine and 10 phencyclidine abusers as well as to 10 controls. No subjects had clinical evidence of depression. Significantly more blunting of the response of TSH to TRH was shown in cocaine and phencyclidine abusers compared with that seen in controls. No significant differences in blunting of response were seen between the cocaine and phencyclidine groups.

RESUMO

Twenty male combinative cocaine free-base/phencyclidine (space-base) abusers were studied for forty-five days, in a double-blind design. Treatment with desipramine was significantly more effective than placebo in alleviating abstinence symptoms. This study tends to support the catecholamine-depletion hypothesis of cocaine and phencyclidine withdrawal.

RESUMO

The authors compared the antimanic effects of clonidine with lithium carbonate in a double-blind crossover design with 24 volunteers. Lithium was observed to be more effective than clonidine. Some patients reported experiencing hypotension (N=8) and depression (N=7) while taking clonidine.

RESUMO

An open field trial was conducted comparing desipramine and an active placebo in separate populations of chronic cocaine and phencyclidine (PCP) abusers, who discontinued their abuse. Subjects who received desipramine showed a decrease in depressive symptoms after a 20-40 day period regardless of whether they abused PCP or cocaine.

RESUMO

Clinical reports and animal studies support the existence of a "serotonin irritation syndrome." This is a putative anxiety state caused by a rise in atmospheric cations and reversed by a corresponding rise in anions. Volunteers were exposed to generated ambient cations and anions under controlled conditions. Cations were found to increase anxiety, excitement, and suspicion. Anions reversed the effects of cations and, in addition, reduced suspicion and excitement to levels below those occurring before cationization. Implications of these findings and the possible mediation of effects by serotonin are discussed.

RESUMO

The existence of the putative "serotonin irritation syndrome" (SIS) was tested in a human population. Volunteers were exposed to a highly cationized environment for two hours. Symptoms of anxiety and excitement significantly increased. During the time of exposure serum serotonin levels also increased significantly. These results support the existence of SIS as a clinical entity.

RESUMO

The relationship between premenstrual tension syndrome and dietary intake was studied in a population of 20 young adult women. Caloric intake was measured during the 10 days preceding and following the menstrual cycle. Those women with more severe symptoms recorded a greater increase in caloric intake. Caloric intake during the premenstrual period also increased with age. It is hypothesized that this caloric intake may be due to increased beta-endorphin levels.

RESUMO

Volunteers (N=71) with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) were given the Peck-Abraham PMS Questionnaire and separated by resulting scores into mild, moderate, and severe groups. Fourteen subjects were randomly selected from each group. Pseudocholinesterase serum levels were measured on the first day of menses for all group members. Trait anxiety was measured by the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Pseudocholinesterase, a possible marker for trait anxiety, was found elevated in 6 of 14 (43%) of the severe PMS subjects, in 2 of the 14 (14%) moderate PMS subjects, and in none of the mild PMS subjects. Trait anxiety was found in 8 of these subjects. None of the subjects with mild PMS showed trait anxiety, while 25% of those with moderate PMS and 75% of those with severe PMS showed trait anxiety. No subject with mild PMS had trait anxiety. In this study PMS is treated as a trait-dependent form of anxiety.

RESUMO

Patients with phencyclidine psychosis were treated with two 50 mg injections of either chlorpromazine (N = 10) or meperidine (N = 10). The chlorpromazine-treated group responded more rapidly, but the meperidine-treated group had greater overall improvement. It is suggested that meperidine may have a role in the emergency treatment of phencyclidine psychosis. These findings may provide support for the hypothesis that dopaminergic psychosis is mediated by opioids.
