Recently, there has been a growing interest in using MOF templating to synthesize heterogeneous catalysts based on metal nanoparticles on carbonaceous supports. Unlike the common approach of direct pyrolysis of PdIn-MOFs at high temperatures, this work proposes a reductive chemical treatment under mild conditions before pyrolysis (resulting in PdIn-QT). The resulting material (PdIn-QT) underwent comprehensive characterization via state-of-the-art aberration-corrected electron microscopy, N2 physisorption, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. These analyses have proven the existence of PdIn bimetallic nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon. In situ DRIFT spectroscopy reveals the advantageous role of indium (In) in regulating Pd activity in alkyne semihydrogenation. Notably, incorporating a soft nucleation step before pyrolysis enhances surface area, porosity, and nitrogen content compared to direct MOF pyrolysis. The optimized material exhibits outstanding catalytic performance with 96% phenylacetylene conversion and 96% selectivity to phenylethylene in the fifth cycle under mild conditions (5 mmol phenylacetylene, 7 mg cat, 5 mL EtOH, R.T., 1 H2 bar).

AIMS: To assess the capability of Pichia kudriavzevii strains isolated from wine, cider, and natural environments in North Patagonia to produce ciders with reduced malic acid levels. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fermentation kinetics and malic acid consumption were assessed in synthetic media and in regional acidic apple musts. All P. kudriavzevii strains degraded malic acid and grew in synthetic media with malic acid as the sole carbon source. Among these strains, those isolated from cider exhibited higher fermentative capacity, mainly due to increased fructose utilization; however, a low capacity to consume sucrose present in the must was also observed for all strains. The NPCC1651 cider strain stood out for its malic acid consumption ability in high-malic acid Granny Smith apple must. Additionally, this strain produced high levels of glycerol as well as acceptable levels of acetic acid. On the other hand, Saccharomyces cerevisiae ÑIF8 reference strain isolated from Patagonian wine completely consumed reducing sugars and sucrose and showed an important capacity for malic acid consumption in apple must fermentations. CONCLUSIONS: Pichia kudriavzevii NPCC1651 strain isolated from cider evidenced interesting features for the consumption of malic acid and fructose in ciders.

Yeasts play a crucial role in transforming apple must into cider. While Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Sc) has been traditionally associated to cider fermentations worldwide, cryotolerant species such as Saccharomyces uvarum (Su) as well as natural S. cerevisiae × S. uvarum (Sc×Su) hybrids have also been detected in ciders fermented at low temperatures. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of two Patagonian cryotolerant yeast strains (Su and Se) and their interspecific hybrids with a Sc to conduct handcrafted apple must fermentations and a second fermentation process (champenoise method). The main chemical parameters and sensory quality of the resulting sparkling beverages was also analysed. Firstly, Sc×Se and Sc×Su hybrids were evaluated in their fermentative features at laboratory scale. Hybrids were compared with their respective parental species evidencing significant differences in the physicochemical and aromatic composition of the obtained base ciders. Both Su parental strain and the hybrid Sc×Se were selected for performing pilot scale fermentations (250 L) using natural (non-sterilized) apple juice at two different temperatures: 20 °C and 13 °C. Sc parental strain was also evaluated for comparative purposes. All base ciders obtained were then subjected to a second fermentation. A high implantation capacity of both Su and the hybrid was evidenced at the lowest evaluated temperature, while commercial Sc strain was not detected at the final fermentation stage, independently from the temperature. All sparkling ciders exhibited distinct physicochemical profiles. Ciders inoculated with commercial Sc (but effectively fermented with local Sc strains) allowed the development of malolactic fermentation (MLF) in processes carried out at both temperatures. Contrarily, no MLF was observed in ciders inoculated with either Su or the hybrid. Sparkling ciders fermented with Su displayed the highest concentrations of 2-phenylethanol and 2-phenylethyl acetate, regardless of the fermentation temperature. Conversely, ciders fermented with the hybrid at 20 °C exhibited the highest concentrations of ethyl octanoate and ethyl decanoate, contributing to floral and fruity notes in the beverage. Sensory analysis conducted with untrained individuals revealed a preference for sparkling ciders produced with the hybrid strain at both 20 °C and 13 °C. The cider fermented at 20 °C exhibited floral notes, sweetness, and a full body, while ciders fermented at 13 °C displayed moderate acidity and a well-balanced profile. Conversely, a trained panel described the cider fermented at 20 °C with Su as a fruity and acidic beverage, whereas the ciders fermented at 13 °C exhibited intense bitterness and acidity. This study highlights the potential of cryotolerant Saccharomyces species and hybrids in the development of new starter cultures for producing artisanal sparkling ciders with distinctive properties.

Patagonia (Argentina and Chile) harbors the highest Saccharomyces eubayanus genomic diversity and its widest predominance in natural environments. In this work, S. eubayanus was isolated for the first time from a fermentative environment. This species was found dominating both a traditional apple chicha fermentation as well as feral apple trees in the Andean region of Aluminé (Argentina). S. eubayanus was the only Saccharomyces species found in the isolation substrates, although it coexisted with other non-Saccharomyces species. The absence of strong fermentative competitors of the Saccharomyces genus (like Saccharomyces uvarum or Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in the feral apples could promote the development and implantation of S. eubayanus in a spontaneous apple must fermentation. Phylogeographic analyses revealed a high intraspecific diversity in S. eubayanus, enabling the characterization of strains belonging to the genomic subpopulations PA1, PA2, and PB1 according to the sequences obtained for the intFR gene region. This result evidence that the studied sampling area represents a natural habitat for the species. Being a novel finding, studying the causes that allowed this species to prosper in a fermentative environment becomes essential. Hence, the physiological profile of the new isolates, including their ability to grow at different temperature, nitrogen, and ethanol concentrations was evaluated in comparison with a set of S. eubayanus strains previously isolated from natural environment and representing different genomic subpopulations. Greater physiological diversity was evidenced when strains isolated from both natural and fermentative environments were analyzed overall. Furthermore, no direct relationship between genomic population and physiological behavior was observed; on the opposite, strains appeared to exhibit similar behavior, primarily grouped by isolation origin.

Perry is a beverage obtained by fermentation of pear juice, popular in the North Hemisphere. In Argentina it is an emerging market, particularly in the Patagonian region. The aim of this work is to describe and to evaluate the spoilage yeasts associated to six perry samples showing signs of microbiological contamination from a local craft perry company in North Patagonian region. Eighteen yeasts were isolated from four of the six perry samples where Brettanomyces custersianus, Brettanomyces bruxellensis and Zygosaccharomyces parabailii were identified. The growth capacity of these isolates in the presence of antimicrobial agents (sulfite and potassium sorbate) was analyzed in solid media. Growth parameters in sterile perry must was evaluated and the production of undesirable compounds were evaluated, products were characterized in terms of their aromatic and physicochemical features. The yeasts Z. parabailii NPCC1791 was able to grow on plates containing sulfite concentrations of up to 4 mM and produced high methanol concentrations in perry. Additionally, B. bruxellensis NPPC1792 was able to produce methanol as well as high concentrations of volatile phenols including 4-ethylphenol and 4-ethylguaiacol. These results demonstrate the potential of these species as perry contaminants. Given the lack of studies describing the contaminating yeasts in perry production, this work represents the first report about perry spoilage yeasts in Argentina, with this knowledge, control strategies can be developed to prevent microbiological contamination and minimize product loss.

SUMMARY: Cytoscape.js is an open-source JavaScript-based graph library. Its most common use case is as a visualization software component, so it can be used to render interactive graphs in a web browser. It also can be used in a headless manner, useful for graph operations on a server, such as Node.js. This update describes new features and enhancements introduced over many new versions from 2015 to 2022. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: Cytoscape.js is implemented in JavaScript. Mordenite is a well-known zeolite widely used for industrial processes. However, its pore architecture can be inconvenient due to diffusional issues. A study of the synthesis parameters from an organic-free dense gel was carried out to control the crystal morphology, which resulted in finned mordenite zeolite particles. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, 29Si and 27Al MAS-NMR, elemental analysis, nitrogen physisorption, SEM, and TEM. We found that careful manipulation of the hydrothermal parameters directly affected the sizes and morphologies of the crystallites and particles, as well as the textural properties of the final products. Additionally, it was found that mordenite could exhibit a fin morphology with additional mesoporosity, which is a promising means to reduce the diffusional problems of one-dimensional-channel zeolites.

Long-term "Blue Carbon" burial in seagrass meadows is complicated by other carbon and alkalinity exchanges that shape net carbon sequestration. We measured a suite of such processes, including denitrification, sulfur, and inorganic carbon cycling, and assessed their impact on air-water CO2 exchange in a typical seagrass meadow underlain by carbonate sediments. Eddy covariance measurements reveal a consistent source of CO2 to the atmosphere at an average rate of 610 ± 990 µmol m−2 hour−1 during our study and 700 ± 660 µmol m−2 hour−1 (6.1 mol m−2 year−1) over an annual cycle. Net alkalinity consumption by ecosystem calcification explains >95% of the observed CO2 emissions, far exceeding organic carbon burial and anaerobic alkalinity generation. We argue that the net carbon sequestration potential of seagrass meadows may be overestimated if calcification-induced CO2 emissions are not accounted for, especially in regions where calcification rates exceed net primary production and burial.

Different species can find convergent solutions to adapt their genome to the same evolutionary constraints, although functional convergence promoted by chromosomal rearrangements in different species has not previously been found. In this work, we discovered that two domesticated yeast species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Saccharomyces uvarum, acquired chromosomal rearrangements to convergently adapt to the presence of sulfite in fermentation environments. We found two new heterologous chromosomal translocations in fermentative strains of S. uvarum at the SSU1 locus, involved in sulfite resistance, an antimicrobial additive widely used in food production. These are convergent events that share similarities with other SSU1 locus chromosomal translocations previously described in domesticated S. cerevisiae strains. In S. uvarum, the newly described VIIXVI and XIXVI chromosomal translocations generate an overexpression of the SSU1 gene and confer increased sulfite resistance. This study highlights the relevance of chromosomal rearrangements to promote the adaptation of yeast to anthropic environments.

The Lewis/Brønsted catalytic properties of the Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) nodes can be tuned by simply controlling the solvent employed in the synthetic procedure. In this work, we demonstrate that Hf-MOF-808 can be prepared from a material with a higher amount of Brønsted acid sites, via modulated hydrothermal synthesis, to a material with a higher proportion of unsaturated Hf Lewis acid sites, via modulated solvothermal synthesis. The Lewis/Brønsted acid properties of the resultant metallic clusters have been studied by different characterization techniques, including XAS, FTIR and NMR spectroscopies, combined with a DFT study. The different nature of the Hf-MOF-808 materials allows their application as selective catalysts in different target reactions requiring Lewis, Brønsted or Lewis-Brønsted acid pairs.

The production of pome fruits as pears and apples, as well as their derived industries, is of great economic importance in North Patagonia. The elaboration of fermented beverages as cider or perry has evidenced a substantial diversification during the last years, with the evaluation of different fruit varieties, yeast starters and technological changes. In this work, two cryotolerant yeasts belonging to the species Saccharomyces uvarum were evaluated at laboratory and pilot scale in sterile and no-sterile pear must. One of the strains was originally isolated from apple chicha (strain NPCC1314) and the other from apple cider (strain NPCC1420) in Patagonia. Both physicochemical and sensory features of the fermented products were evaluated. Both strains were able to successfully complete the fermentations, although strain NPCC1420 showed the better kinetic properties including a faster sugar consumption than the strain NPCC1314. Both strains showed excellent implantation capacity, but the fermented products showed different chemical profiles. The perry fermented with the strain NPCC1314 was characterized by better sensory attributes as assessed by trained panelists and a greater acceptance for untrained public than the same fermented with the strain NPCC1420. The two strains were able to consume sorbitol, both in pear must and in agar-plates supplemented with sorbitol as the sole carbon source. This ability is described for the first time in S. uvarum, at least for the two strains evaluated in this work.

The dynamic nature of the copper cations acting as active sites for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia is investigated using a combined theoretical and spectroscopic approach. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of Cu-CHA catalysts in contact with reactants and intermediates at realistic operating conditions show that only ammonia is able to release Cu+ and Cu2+ cations from their positions coordinated to the zeolite framework, forming mobile Cu+(NH3)2 and Cu2+(NH3)4 complexes that migrate to the center of the cavity. Herein, we give evidence that such mobilization of copper cations modifies the vibrational fingerprint in the 800-1000 cm-1 region of the IR spectra. Bands associated with the lattice asymmetric T-O-T vibrations are perturbed by the presence of coordinated cations, and allow one to experimentally follow the dynamic reorganization of the active sites at operating conditions.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-driven synthesis is considered as a promising alternative for the development of new catalytic materials with well-designed active sites. This synthetic approach is used here to gradually transform a new bimetallic MOF, with Pd and Fe as the metal components, by the in situ generation of aniline under mild conditions. This methodology results in a compositionally homogeneous nanocomposite formed by Fe-doped Pd nanoparticles that, in turn, are supported on iron oxide-doped carbon. The nanocomposite has been fully characterized by several techniques such as IR and Raman spectroscopy, TEM, XPS, and XAS. The performance of this nanocomposite as an heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation of nitroarenes and nitrobenzene coupling with benzaldehyde has been evaluated, proving it to be an efficient and reusable catalyst.

Microbiological contamination by spoilage yeasts species are frequent during winemaking, and biological control using antagonistic yeasts is considered a more beneficial alternative to conventional synthetic antimicrobials. Saccharomyces eubayanus killer toxin (SeKT) was produced and purified in a synthetic optimized medium. Purification procedure allowed the identification of SeKT as protein with an apparent molecular mass of 70 kDa and activity at physicochemical conditions suitable for winemaking process. Purified SeKT reduced the levels of volatile phenols produced by the spoilage yeasts Brettanomyces bruxellensis, Pichia membranifaciens, Meyerozyma guilliermondii and Pichia manshurica in wine-like medium. The putative mode of action of SeKT on sensitive yeast strains comprises cell wall disruption through ß-glucanase and chitinase activities as well as necrotic and apoptotic death in a toxin dose dependent manner. Thus, SeKT appears to be a promising biocontrol agent against spoilage yeasts during wine aging and storing.

In this work, an MWW-type zeolite with pillars containing silicon and niobium oxide was synthesized to obtain a hierarchical zeolite. The effect of niobium insertion in the pillaring process was determined by combining a controllable acidity and accessibility in the final material. All pillared materials had niobium occupying framework positions in pillars and extra-framework positions. The pillared material, Pil-Nb-4.5 with 4.5 wt % niobium, did not compromise the mesoporosity formed by pillaring, while the increase of niobium in the structure gradually decreased the mesoporosity and ordering of lamellar stacking. The morphology of the pillared zeolites and the niobium content were found to directly affect the catalytic activity. Specifically, we report on the activity of the MWW-type zeolites with niobium catalyzing the gas-phase oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which is an important reaction for clean environmental. All produced MWW-type zeolites with niobium were catalytically active, even at low temperatures and low niobium loading, and provided excellent conversion efficiencies.

The wild, cold-adapted parent of hybrid lager-brewing yeasts, Saccharomyces eubayanus, has a complex and understudied natural history. The exploration of this diversity can be used both to develop new brewing applications and to enlighten our understanding of the dynamics of yeast evolution in the wild. Here, we integrate whole genome sequence and phenotypic data of 200 S. eubayanus strains, the largest collection known to date. S. eubayanus has a multilayered population structure, consisting of two major populations that are further structured into six subpopulations. Four of these subpopulations are found exclusively in the Patagonian region of South America; one is found predominantly in Patagonia and sparsely in Oceania and North America; and one is specific to the Holarctic ecozone. Plant host associations differed between subpopulations and between S. eubayanus and its sister species, Saccharomyces uvarum. S. eubayanus is most abundant and genetically diverse in northern Patagonia, where some locations harbor more genetic diversity than is found outside of South America, suggesting that northern Patagonia east of the Andes was a glacial refugium for this species. All but one subpopulation shows isolation-by-distance, and gene flow between subpopulations is low. However, there are strong signals of ancient and recent outcrossing, including two admixed lineages, one that is sympatric with and one that is mostly isolated from its parental populations. Using our extensive biogeographical data, we build a robust model that predicts all known and a handful of additional regions of the globe that are climatically suitable for S. eubayanus, including Europe where host accessibility and competitive exclusion by other Saccharomyces species may explain its continued elusiveness. We conclude that this industrially relevant species has rich natural diversity with many factors contributing to its complex distribution and natural history.

Stress has been defined as any environmental factor that impairs the growth of a living organism. High concentrations of ethanol, sugars and SO2 as well as temperature variations occurring during winemaking processes are some recognized stress factors that yeasts must overcome in order to avoid stuck or sluggish fermentations. At least two of these factors -sugar and ethanol concentrations- are strongly influenced by the global warming, which become them a worry for the future years in the winemaking industry. One of the most interesting strategies to face this complex situation is the generation of hybrids possessing, in a single yeast strain, a broader range of stress factors tolerance than their parents. In the present study, we evaluated four artificial hybrids generated with S. cerevisiae, S. uvarum and S. eubayanus using a non-GMO-generating method, in their tolerance to a set of winemaking stress factors. Their capacity to overcome specific artificial winemaking situations associated with global warming was also analyzed. All four hybrids were able to grow in a wider temperature range (8-37 °C) than their parents. Hybrids showed intermediate tolerance to higher ethanol, sugar and sulphite concentrations than their parents. Additionally, the hybrids showed an excellent fermentative behaviour in musts containing high fructose concentrations at low temperature as well as under a condition mimicking a stuck fermentation.

Saccharomyces uvarum has been recovered from natural habitats and traditionally fermented beverages (apple chicha) in Patagonia. However, this species has never been obtained from industrially relevant beverages like wine or cider in the same region. In this work, different strains belonging to the cryotolerant species S. uvarum were recovered from spontaneous cider fermentations carried out at low temperature in Red Delicious apple must. The strain S. uvarum NPCC1420 obtained from this cider and selected for its physiological and technological features, evidenced a better adaptation to the cidermaking process than a previously selected strain obtained from a less industrialized product called apple chicha. Some differences, like a higher ethanol and sulphite tolerance, seemed to be associated with differential domestication pressures suffered by each different strain. Moreover, the most important fermentative features of the strain NPCC1420 were a higher competition capacity than the strain NPCC1314 in non-sterile apple must, as well as significantly higher amounts of glycerol, 2-phenylethanol and 2-phenylethyl acetate than the strain isolated from apple chicha.

Expanding the previously known family of -onium (ammonium, phosphonium, and sulfonium) organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) for the synthesis of zeolite MFI, a new member, the arsonium cation, is used for the first time. The new group of tetraalkylarsonium cations has allowed the synthesis of the zeolite ZSM-5 with several different chemical compositions, opening a route for the synthesis of zeolites with a new series of OSDA. Moreover, the use of As replacing N in the OSDA allows the introduction of probe atoms that facilitate the study of these molecules by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Finally, the influence of trivalent elements such as B, Al, or Ga isomorphically replacing Si atoms in the framework structure and its interaction with the As species has been studied. The suitability of the tetraalkylarsonium cation for carrying out the crystallization of zeolites is demonstrated along with the benefit of the presence of As atoms in the occluded OSDA, which allows its advanced characterization as well as the study of its evolution during OSDA removal by thermal treatments.

Lack of the prezygotic barrier in the Saccharomyces genus facilitates the construction of artificial interspecific hybrids among different Saccharomyces species. Hybrids that maintain the interesting features of parental strains have been applied in industry for many beneficial purposes. Two of the most important problems faced by wine makers is nitrogen deficiency in grape must and low-temperature fermentation. In our study, hybrids were constructed by using selected low nitrogen-demanding cryotolerant S. eubayanus, S. uvarum strains and S. cerevisiae. The fermentation capacity of the hybrid strains was tested under four conditions by combining two temperatures, 12 °C and 28 °C, and two nitrogen concentrations, 60 mg/L and 300 mg/L. The hybrid strains obtained combined characters of both parental strains and conferred better fermentation rates under low-temperature or low-nitrogen conditions. The hybrid strains also produced larger amounts of acetate esters and higher alcohols, which increase aroma intensity and complexity in wine. Nitrogen sources were more rapidly consumed by the hybrid strains, which allows greater competition ability under nitrogen-deficiency conditions. Therefore, the interspecific hybridisation between low nitrogen-demanding cryotolerant strains and S. cerevisiae is a potential solution for low-temperature or low-nitrogen fermentations.
