RESUMO

Through widespread immunization against SARS-CoV-2 prior to or post-infection, a substantial segment of the global population has acquired both humoral and cellular immunity, and there has been a notable reduction in the incidence of severe and fatal cases linked to this virus and accelerated recovery times for those infected. Nonetheless, a significant demographic, comprising around 20% to 30% of the adult population, remains unimmunized due to diverse factors. Furthermore, alongside those recovered from the infection, there is a subset of the population experiencing persistent symptoms referred to as Long COVID. This condition is more prevalent among individuals with underlying health conditions and immune system impairments. Some Long COVID pathologies stem from direct damage inflicted by the viral infection, whereas others arise from inadequate immune system control over the infection or suboptimal immunoregulation. There are differences in the serum cytokines and miRNA profiles between infected individuals who develop severe COVID-19 or Long COVID and those who control adequately the infection. This review delves into the advantages and constraints associated with employing imiquimod in human subjects to enhance the immune response during SARS-CoV-2 immunization. Restoration of the immune system can modify it towards a profile of non-susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2. An adequate immune system has the potential to curb viral propagation, mitigate symptoms, and ameliorate the severe consequences of the infection.

One of the main challenges to expand the use of titanium dioxide (titania) as a photocatalyst is related to its large band gap energy and the lack of an atomic scale description of the reduction mechanisms that may tailor the photocatalytic properties. We show that rutile TiO2 single crystals annealed in the presence of atomic hydrogen experience a strong reduction and structural rearrangement, yielding a material that exhibits enhanced light absorption, which extends from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range, and improved photoelectrocatalytic performance. We demonstrate that both magnitudes behave oppositely: heavy/mild plasma reduction treatments lead to large/negligible spectral absorption changes and poor/enhanced (×10) photoelectrocatalytic performance, as judged from the higher photocurrent. To correlate the photoelectrochemical performance with the atomic and chemical structures of the hydrogen-reduced materials, we have modeled the process with in situ scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, which allow us to determine the initial stages of oxygen desorption and the desorption/diffusion of Ti atoms from the surface. This multiscale study opens a door toward improved materials for diverse applications such as more efficient rutile TiO2-based photoelectrocatalysts, green photothermal absorbers for solar energy applications, or NIR-sensing materials.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lateropulsion (LP) is a profound disorder of postural control that has a significant impact on neurorehabilitation. Knowledge of relevant brain areas could guide decisions on appropriate intervention methods. Although LP severity and duration are highly variable in individuals with LP, imaging studies on LP have not sufficiently considered these aspects. The aim of this study was to investigate the lesion location in individuals after stroke and the correlation with LP duration and severity. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study using voxel lesion symptom mapping (VLSM) in 74 individuals with right-sided brain lesion (49 with and 25 without LP) was performed to analyze the correlation between lesion location and LP severity. Duration was investigated in a subsample of 22 individuals with LP. LP was diagnosed by means of the Scale for Contraversive Pushing. RESULTS: Individuals with LP showed significantly larger lesion sizes compared with the individuals with no LP. VLSM analysis of LP severity did not reveal statistically significant results. VLSM analysis showed a statistically significant association with longer LP duration for the inferior frontal gyrus, the hippocampus, the inferior parietal gyrus, the supramarginal gyrus, the angular gyrus, the temporal cortex, the sagittal stratum, and the superior longitudinal fasciculus. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: LP-relevant areas are located in the multisensory network. Areas of the frontoparietal network, which are related to spatial cognition, memory, and attention, were found to be relevant for duration and severity. The findings, especially those regarding duration involving the middle temporal cortex, could explain the better intervention outcomes for methods based more on implicit than on explicit knowledge of verticality.Video Abstract available for more insights from the authors (see the Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1 available at: http://links.lww.com/JNPT/A433 ).

Garlic (Allium sativum) possesses healing properties for diseases like systemic arterial hypertension, cancer and diabetes, among others. Its main component, allicin, binds to the Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid Type 1 (TRPV1). In this study, we investigated TRPV1's involvement in the regulation of various molecules at the systemic and aortic levels in Wistar rats treated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and garlic to activate the receptor. The experimental groups were as follows: 1) Control, 2) LPS, 3) Garlic, and 4) LPS + Garlic. Using Uv-visible spectrophotometry and capillary zone electrophoresis, we measured the levels of nitric oxide (NO), biopterins BH2 and BH4, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and oxidizing capacity (OXCA). We also analyzed molecules related to vascular homeostasis such as angiotensin Ang 1-7 and Ang II, as well as endothelin ET-1. In addition, we assessed the inflammatory response by determining the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), and galectin-3 (GTN-3). For cell damage assessment, we measured levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), malonate (MTO) and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8HO2dG). The results showed that LPS influenced the NO pathway at both systemic and aortic levels by increasing OXCA and reducing TAC. It also disrupted vascular homeostasis by increasing Ang-II and ET-1, while decreasing Ang1-7 levels. IL-6, TNFα, GTN-3, as well as MDA, MTO, and 8HO2dG were significantly elevated compared to the control group. The expression of iNOS was increased, but TRPV1 remained unaffected by LPS. However, garlic treatment effectively mitigated the effects of LPS and significantly increased TRPV1 expression. Furthermore, LPS caused a significant decrease in calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the aorta, which was counteracted by garlic treatment. Overall, TRPV1 appears to play a crucial role in regulating oxidative stress and the molecules involved in damage and inflammation induced by LPS. Thus, studying TRPV1, CGRP, and allicin may offer a potential strategy for mitigating inflammatory and oxidative stress in sepsis.

Prompt diagnosis of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is essential for initiating timely treatment. MicroRNAs have recently emerged as biomarkers in cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the discriminatory capacity of serum microRNAs in identifying an ischemic origin in patients presenting with chest discomfort to the Emergency Department. The study included 98 participants (78 with STEMI and 20 with nonischemic chest discomfort). Significant differences in the expression levels of miR-133b, miR-126, and miR-155 (but not miR-1, miR-208, and miR-208b) were observed between groups. miR-133b and miR-155 exhibited 97% and 93% sensitivity in identifying STEMI patients, respectively. miR-126 demonstrated a specificity of 90% in identifying STEMI patients. No significant associations were found between microRNAs and occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). However, patients with MACE had higher levels of interleukin (IL)-15, IL-21, IFN-γ-induced protein-10, and N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide compared to non-MACE patients. Overall, there were significant associations among the expression levels of microRNAs. However, microRNAs did not demonstrate associations with either inflammatory markers or cardiovascular risk scores. This study highlights the potential of microRNAs, particularly miR-133b and miR-126, as diagnostic biomarkers for distinguishing patients with STEMI from those presenting with nonischemic chest discomfort to the Emergency Department.

The modification of the surface properties of graphene with polymers provides a method for expanding its scope into new applications as a hybrid material. Unfortunately, the chemical inertness of graphene hinders the covalent functionalization required to build them up. Developing new strategies to enhance the graphene chemical activity for efficient and stable functionalization, while preserving its electronic properties, is a major challenge. We here devise a covalent functionalization method that is clean, reproducible, scalable, and technologically relevant for the synthesis of a large-scale, substrate-supported graphene-polymer hybrid material. In a first step, hydrogen-assisted plasma activation of p-aminophenol (p-AP) linker molecules produces their stable and covalent attachment to large-area graphene. Second, an in situ radical polymerization reaction of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) is carried out on the functionalized surface, leading to a graphene-polymer hybrid functional material. The functionalization with a hydrophilic and soft polymer modifies the hydrophobicity of graphene and might enhance its biocompatibility. We have characterized these hybrid materials by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy and studied their electrical response, confirming that the graphene/p-AP/PHEA architecture is anchored covalently by the sp3 hybridization and controlled polymerization reaction on graphene, retaining its suitable electronic properties. Among all the possibilities, we assess the proof of concept of this graphene-based hybrid platform as a humidity sensor. An enhanced sensitivity is obtained in comparison with pristine graphene and related materials. This functional nanoarchitecture and the two-step strategy open up future potential applications in sensors, biomaterials, or biotechnology fields.

The two main methods for partitioning crude methanolic extract from Amphidinium carterae biomass were compared. The objective was to obtain three enriched fractions containing amphidinols (APDs), carotenoids, and fatty acids. Since the most valuable bioproducts are APDs, their recovery was the principal goal. The first method consisted of a solid-phase extraction (SPE) in reverse phase that, for the first time, was optimized to fractionate organic methanolic extracts from Amphidinium carterae biomass using reverse-phase C18 as the adsorbent. The second method consisted of a two-step liquid-liquid extraction coupled with SPE and, alternatively, with solvent partitioning. The SPE method allowed the recovery of the biologically-active fraction (containing the APDs) by eluting with methanol (MeOH): water (H2O) (80:20 v/v). Alternatively, an APD purification strategy using solvent partitioning proved to be a better approach for providing APDs in a clear-cut way. When using n-butanol, APDs were obtained at a 70% concentration (w/w), whereas for the SPE method, the most concentrated fraction was only 18% (w/w). For the other fractions (carotenoids and fatty acids), a two-step liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method coupled with the solvent partitioning method presented the best results.

The transient vanilloid receptor potential type 1 (TRPV1) regulates neuronal and vascular functions mediated by nitric oxide (NO) and by the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Here, we study the participation of TRPV1 in the regulation of myocardial injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion and in the control of NO, tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), the cGMP pathway, CGRP, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA) and phosphodiesterase-3 (PDE-3). Isolated hearts of Wistar rats perfused according to the Langendorff technique were used to study the effects of an agonist of TRPV1, capsaicin (CS), an antagonist, capsazepine (CZ), and their combination CZ+CS. The hearts were subjected to three conditions: (1) control, (2) ischemia and (3) ischemia-reperfusion. We determined cardiac mechanical activity and the levels of NO, cGMP, BH4, CGRP, TAC, MDA and PDE-3 in ventricular tissue after administration of CS, CZ and CZ+CS. Western blots were used to study the expressions of eNOS, iNOS and phosphorylated NOS (pNOS). Structural changes were determined by histological evaluation. CS prevented damage caused by ischemia-reperfusion by improving cardiac mechanical activity and elevating the levels of NO, cGMP, BH4, TAC and CGRP. TRPV1 and iNOS expression were increased under ischemic conditions, while eNOS and pNOS were not modified. We conclude that the activation of TRPV1 constitutes a therapeutic possibility to counteract the damage caused by ischemia and reperfusion by regulating the NO pathway through CGRP.

The potential transient vanilloid receptor type 1 (TRPV1) plays important functional roles in the vascular system. In the present study, we explored the role of the TRPV1 in the production of nitric oxide (NO), biopterines (BH4 and BH2), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), malondialdehyde (MDA), phosphodiesterase-3 (PDE-3), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the rat aorta. Wistar rats were divided into four groups: (1) control, (2) capsaicin (CS, 20 mg/kg), (3) capsazepine (CZ, 24 mg/kg), and (4) CZ + CS. Treatments were applied daily for 4 days before removing the thoracic aortas for testing of aortic tissue and endothelial cells. TRPV1 activation produced increases in BH4 14%, cGMP 25%, NO 29%, and TAC 59.2% in comparison to the controls. BH2 and MDA increased with CZ. CGRP shows a tendency to decrease with CZ. The analysis by immunocytochemistry confirmed that the TRPV1 is present in aortic endothelial cells. Aortic endothelial cells were obtained from healthy rats and cultured to directly explore the effects of CS and CZ. The activation of the TRPV1 (CS 30 µM) produced increases in BH4 17%, NO 36.6%, TAC 56.3%, and CGRP 65%, when compared to controls. BH2 decreased with CZ + CS. CS effects were diminished by CZ in cells and in the tissue. We conclude that the TRPV1 is a structure present in the membrane of aortic endothelial cells and that it participates in the production of NO. The importance of the TRPV1 should be considered in vascular reactivity studies.

BACKGROUND: Given the uncontrolled increase of those affected by the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus, COVID-19, and the possibility of the health system collapsing in Spain, the Royal Decree 463/2020, of March 14th, declared a state of alarm for the management of this health crisis. The whole population, despite their social background, were confined inside their homes during this arduous situation. There are numerous articles that endorse the idea that their home conditions, the number of people with whom they coexist with, their employment, gender, amount of physical exercise, as well as their body mass index and their diagnosis in COVID-19 are characteristics that may represent an increased risk of suffering pain and changes in their quality of life. We proposed a study to determine the impact of the confinement on pain, quality of life and public health of the Spanish population due to the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: An observational study was carried out during April and May 2020 through an online survey. It was statistically analysed through descriptive analysis and inferential analysis by bivariate logistic regression, ordinal logistic and Pearson's chi square. RESULTS: A total of 225 questionnaires were obtained between April and May 2020. For subjects suffering pain before confinement, significant relationships were drawn between experiencing pain and work-related activities (P=0.006), as well as, physical activity or the absence of it (P=0.033). In addition, an important association between experiencing pain and gender was discovered, both for people suffering pain before and during confinement (P=0.007 and P=0.011). Furthermore, the confinement has affected the quality of life of those affected, particularly in relation with suffering pain before and during confinement (P=0.001 and P=0.000), Job type (P=0.016) and BMI (P=0.025) and affecting more Physical Role, Emotional Role and Mental Health, followed by Physical Function. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of pain in subjects undergoing confinement is persistent, with varying intensity and frequency based on age, gender, physical activity, and work status. In any of these conditions, the quality of life of the subjects in confinement has been severely affected, which to this day creates a severe public health problem.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic disease characterized by intense facial pain that is caused by trigeminal nerve affectation. It usually affects adults from 50 years of age, and is more frequent in women. Additionally, it presents serious psychological effects that often lead to depression, which is why it is considered highly disabling. The therapeutic approach is based on the modification of nerve activity through electrical, surgical or chemical stimulation in specific regions of the nervous system. OBJECTIVE: To perform a meta-analysis of the scientific literature related to invasive and non-invasive electrical neuromodulation of trigeminal neuralgia, in order to assess their effects over pain and adverse effects. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in 4 databases, followed by a manual search of articles on invasive or non-invasive electrical neuromodulation to control the pain of trigeminal neuralgia, including the last 15 years. RESULTS: Regarding non-invasive methods, clinical trials did not present enough results in order to perform a meta-analysis. Regarding invasive methods, clinical trials meta-analysis showed no statistical differences between different treatment methods. In all cases, improvements in patients' pain were reported, although results regarding adverse effects were variable. CONCLUSION: In the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, the continuous radiofrequency provides better short and medium-term results, but pulsed radiofrequency shows less adverse effects after treatment, and has better results in the long-term.

Background: Diagnosing stroke as a cause of acute vertigo, dizziness, or double vision remains a challenge, because symptom characteristics can be variable. The purpose of this study was to prospectively investigate lesion-symptom relationships in patients with acute vestibular or ocular motor stroke. Methods: Three hundred and fifty one patients with acute and isolated vestibular or ocular motor symptoms of unclear etiology were enrolled in the EMVERT lesion trial. Symptom quality was assessed by the chief complaint (vertigo, dizziness, double vision), symptom intensity by the visual analog scale, functional impairment by EQ-5D-5L, and symptom duration by daily rating. Acute vestibular and ocular motor signs were registered by videooculography. A standardized MRI (DWI-/FLAIR-/T2-/T2*-/3D-T1-weighted sequences) was recorded within 7 days of symptom onset. MRIs with DWI lesions were further processed for voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM). Results: In 47 patients, MRI depicted an acute unilateral stroke (13.4%). The chief complaints were dizziness (42.5%), vertigo (40.4%) and double vision (17.0%). Lesions in patients with vertigo or dizziness showed a large overlap in the cerebellar hemisphere. VLSM indicated that strokes in the medial cerebellar layers 7b, 8, 9 were associated with vertigo, strokes in the lateral cerebellar layer 8, crus 1, 2 with dizziness, and pontomesencephalic strokes with double vision. Symptom intensity and duration varied largely between patients. Higher symptom intensity and longer duration were associated with medial cerebellar lesions. Hemispheric lesions of the cortex were rare and presented with milder symptoms of shorter duration. Conclusions: Prospective evaluation of patients with acute vestibular or ocular motor stroke revealed that symptom quality, intensity and duration were not suited to differentiating peripheral from central etiologies. Lesions in the lateral cerebellum, thalamus, or cortex presented with unspecific, mild and transient symptoms prone to being misdiagnosed.

Microalgae are microorganisms with the capacity to contribute to the sustainable and healthy food production, in addition to wastewater treatment. The subject of this work was to determine the potential of Scenedesmus obliquus microalga grown in brewery wastewater to act as a plant biostimulant. The germination index of watercress seeds, as well as the auxin-like activity in mung bean and cucumber, and in the cytokinin-like activity in cucumber bioassays were used to evaluate the biostimulant potential. Several biomass processes were studied, such as centrifugation, ultrasonication and enzymatic hydrolysis, as well as the final concentration of microalgal extracts to determine their influence in the biostimulant activity of the Scenedesmus biomass. The results showed an increase of 40% on the germination index when using the biomass at 0.1 g/L, without any pre-treatment. For auxin-like activity, the best results (up to 60% with respect to control) were obtained at 0.5 g/L of biomass extract, after a combination of cell disruption, enzymatic hydrolysis and centrifugation. For cytokinin-like activity, the best results (up to 187.5% with respect to control) were achieved without cell disruption, after enzymatic hydrolysis and centrifugation at a biomass extract concentration of 2 g/L.

Introducción: la cultura de seguridad del paciente permite trabajar de manera multidisc-plinaria, identificar vulnerabilidades y modificar áreas de oportunidad para disminuir riesgos que pudieran propiciar un error que cause daño al paciente. Objetivo: describir el grado de cultura de seguridad del paciente en un hospital de alta especialidad. Material y métodos: estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo y transversal, con técnica de mues-treo aleatorio simple. Se aplicó el cuestionario Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture, de la Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Bajo las pautas SQUIRE para mejorar la atención médica. Resultados: el porcentaje general del grado de cultura de seguridad del paciente fue 45.1%, la percepción del personal sobre el grado de seguridad global del paciente 8.1/10. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the actions of transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) agonist capsaicin (CS) and of its antagonist capsazepine (CZ), on cardiac function as well as endothelial biomarkers and some parameters related with nitric oxide (NO) release in L-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertensive rats. NO has been implicated in the pathophysiology of systemic arterial hypertension (SAHT). We analyzed the levels of nitric oxide (NO), tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), cyclic guanosin monophosphate (cGMP), phosphodiesterase-3 (PDE-3), and the expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), guanosine triphosphate cyclohydrolase 1 (GTPCH-1), protein kinase B (AKT), and TRPV1 in serum and cardiac tissue of normotensive (118±3 mmHg) and hypertensive (H) rats (165 ± 4 mmHg). Cardiac mechanical performance (CMP) was calculated and NO was quantified in the coronary effluent in the Langendorff isolated heart model. In hypertensive rats capsaicin increased the levels of NO, BH4, cGMP, and TAC, and reduced PDE-3 and MDA. Expressions of eNOS, GTPCH-1, and TRPV1 were increased, while AKT was decreased. Capsazepine diminished these effects. In the hypertensive heart, CMP improved with the CS treatment. In conclusion, the activation of TRPV1 in H rats may be an alternative mechanism for the improvement of cardiac function and systemic levels of biomarkers related to the bioavailability of NO.

Cell-based therapy has become a resource for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases; however, there are some conundrums to achieve. In vitro cardiomyocyte generation could be a solution for scaling options in clinical applications. Variability on cardiac differentiation in previously reported studies from adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) and the lack of measuring of the cardiomyocyte differentiation efficiency motivate the present study. Here, we improved the ASC-derived cardiomyocyte-like cell differentiation efficiency with a directed cardiomyocyte differentiation protocol: BMP-4 + VEGF (days 0-4) followed by a methylcellulose-based medium with cytokines (IL-6 and IL-3) (days 5-21). Cultures treated with the directed cardiomyocyte differentiation protocol showed cardiac-like cells and "rosette-like structures" from day 7. The percentage of cardiac troponin T- (cTnT-) positive cells was evaluated by flow cytometry to assess the cardiomyocyte differentiation efficiency in a quantitative manner. ASCs treated with the directed cardiomyocyte differentiation protocol obtained a differentiation efficiency of up to 44.03% (39.96%±3.78) at day 15 without any enrichment step. Also, at day 21 we observed by immunofluorescence the positive expression of early, late, and cardiac maturation differentiation markers (Gata-4, cTnT, cardiac myosin heavy chain (MyH), and the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCa2)) in cultures treated with the directed cardiomyocyte differentiation protocol. Unlike other protocols, the use of critical factors of embryonic cardiomyogenesis coupled with a methylcellulose-based medium containing previously reported cardiogenic cytokines (IL-6 and IL-3) seems to be favorable for in vitro cardiomyocyte generation. This novel efficient culture protocol makes ASC-derived cardiac differentiation more efficient. Further investigation is needed to identify an ASC-derived cardiomyocyte surface marker for cardiac enrichment.

Introducción: El osteoma osteoide (OO) es el tumor osteoblástico benigno más frecuente. La ubicación en el astrágalo es del 2 al 10%. La resección es la única opción curativa. Presentamos una serie de 2 casos de osteoma osteoide en cuello del astrágalo con resección artroscópica y radiofrecuencia como tratamiento. Material y Métodos: Presentamos dos pacientes de 23 y 24 años, con dolor crónico en tobillo e imágenes por tomografía y resonancia compatibles con osteoma osteoide. Resultados: Los pacientes evolucionaron favorablemente, con una mejoría notable del score AOFAS, recuperación completa del cuadro y sin recidivas a los 18 meses de seguimiento. Discusión: El diagnóstico suele ser tardío, siendo el primer síntoma el dolor de predominio nocturno y que alivia con el uso de salicilatos. La extirpación artroscópica del OO del tobillo puede ser un procedimiento exitoso con mínimas complicaciones, siendo el tumor fácil de localizar y visualizar. Conclusión: Obtuvimos resultados satisfactorios para el paciente, con tiempos de recuperación breves y menor riesgo de infección. El procedimiento muy recomendable. Tipo de estudio: Serie de casos. Introduction: Osteoid osteoma (OO) is the most frequent benign osteoblastic tumor. The location in the talus is 2 to 10%. Resection is the only curative option. We present arthroscopic resection and use of radiofrequency as treatment. Material and methods: We present two patients aged 23 and 24 years, with chronic ankle pain, computed tomography and magnetic resonance images compatible with osteoid osteoma. Results: Patients showed complete recovery after procedures, with an notable improvement of AOFAS and no recurrence after a follow-up of 18 months. Discussion: Late diagnosis is usually due to the first symptom being a pain, with nocturnal predominance and relieved by the use of salicylates. Arthroscopic removal of the OO of the ankle can be a successful procedure with minimal complications, being easy to locate and completely visualize the tumor. Conclusion: We obtained satisfactory postoperative results, with short recovery times and decreased risks of infection. We highly recommend the procedure. Type of study: Case series. While high-quality defect-free epitaxial graphene can be efficiently grown on metal substrates, strong interaction with the supporting metal quenches its outstanding properties. Thus, protocols to transfer graphene to insulating substrates are obligatory, and these often severely impair graphene properties by the introduction of structural or chemical defects. Here we describe a simple and easily scalable general methodology to structurally and electronically decouple epitaxial graphene from Pt(111) and Ir(111) metal surfaces. A multi-technique characterization combined with ab-initio calculations was employed to fully explain the different steps involved in the process. It was shown that, after a controlled electrochemical oxidation process, a single-atom thick metal-hydroxide layer intercalates below graphene, decoupling it from the metal substrate. This decoupling process occurs without disrupting the morphology and electronic properties of graphene. The results suggest that suitably optimized electrochemical treatments may provide effective alternatives to current transfer protocols for graphene and other 2D materials on diverse metal surfaces.

Direct graphene growth on silicon with a native oxide using plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition at low temperatures [550 °C-650 °C] is demonstrated for the first time. It is shown that the fine-tuning of a two-step synthesis with gas mixtures C2H2/H2 yields monolayer and few layer graphene films with a controllable domain size from 50 nm to more than 300 nm and the sheet resistance ranging from 8 kΩ sq-1 to less than 1.8 kΩ sq-1. Differences are understood in terms of the interaction of the plasma species - chiefly atomic H - with the deposited graphene and the native oxide layer. The proposed low temperature direct synthesis on an insulating substrate does not require any transfer processes and improves the compatibility with the current industrial processes.

We study mechanically exfoliated nanosheets of franckeite by quantitative optical microscopy. The analysis of transmission-mode and epi-illumination-mode optical microscopy images provides a rapid method to estimate the thickness of the exfoliated flakes at first glance. A quantitative analysis of the optical contrast spectra by means of micro-reflectance allows one to determine the refractive index of franckeite over a broad range of the visible spectrum through a fit of the acquired spectra to a model based on the Fresnel law.
