RESUMO

Cytological examination of the sputum is nowadays mainly used for mass surveys among high-risk populations and in suspicious cases with normal X-ray films. In all other cases, bronchial brushing and percutaneous puncture-biopsy of the lung are preferred, being much more reliable. Several new bronchial cytology techniques have recently been developed but are not yet widely used. Their respective indications are governed by the facilities available and by the volume, site and characteristic features of the tumour.

RESUMO

The authors report two cases of FSH secreting adenomas in men and attempt to draw out some features of these very uncommon pituitary tumors. Absence of gynecomastia is emphasized. Diagnosis proceeds from systematic radio-immunoassay of pituitary hormones. Evidence of FSH secretion results from paradoxical gonadotropin stimulation by TRH and secretory granules seen by electronic microscope. Immunofluorescence studies are still to perform. Dynamic testicular secretion and, in one case, histologic examination were performed.

RESUMO

Sarcoidosis lesions in the brain are relatively rare and can remain latent, or become evident in various forms: meningitic, encephalitic, neuro-endocrinian, vascular, or tumoral. A case is reported of an Antilles patient aged 35 years, in whom the diagnosis was made by examination of an operation specimen, following the discovery of an apparently isolated intracranial hypertension.

RESUMO

Meningeal hemorrhages in 5 patients with tumors of the cauda equina are reported. In each case there were signs from the brain area which led to a false diagnosis of ruptured intracranial aneurism, before attention was drawn to the cauda equina by a relapse with hemorrhage or other signs. The value of medullary arteriography for positively diagnosing cauda equina tumors, and their differential diagnosis from medullary arteriovenous malformations--principal cause of spinal meningeal hemorrhages--is discussed, as well as the necessity for systematically evoking this topography in children and young adults when arteriographic exploration is negative.

RESUMO

The mortality statistics due to tuberculosis drawn up by INSERM for the years 1968-1973 show the rate to be 0.86% in the Paris region. A study based on autopsy results of 7,400 adults gave a rate of 3.3%. The causes of this discrepancy are analysed.

RESUMO

In this study, which was undertaken after a personal error of diagnosis, we have tried to demonstrated why the cells found in the pleural fluid look alike cancerous cells and this aim has obviously lead us to discuss the origin of the abnormal cells. The cytologic and cytochemical study of pleural fluid cells in 9 cases of lung infarction and the comparizon with pathological patterns has lead the authors to believe that the abnormal cells present in the fluid are not mesothelial cells. The cytochemical stain on the smears and on the lung sections, evidencing iron pigment in the cytoplasma of some cells has lead us to consider them as alveolar macrophages. The simple technic may help in the diagnosis of lung infarction when the clinical features are not enough convincing.
