BACKGROUND: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Inhibitor of kappa B kinase interacting protein (IKBIP) has been reported to promote glioma progression, but its role in other cancers remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of IKBIP and its underlying molecular mechanisms in ESCC. METHODS: The mRNA expression of IKBIP was analyzed using multiple cancer databases. Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect IKBIP protein expression in ESCC tissues and adjacent normal tissues, and Kaplan‒Meier survival and Cox regression analyses were carried out. The effects of IKBIP knockdown (or overexpression) on ESCC cells were detected by cell viability, cell migration, flow cytometry and Western blot assays. LY-294002 was used to validate the activation of the AKT signaling pathway by IKBIP. Finally, the role of IKBIP in ESCC was verified in a xenograft model. RESULTS: Both bioinformatics analysis and immunohistochemistry indicated that IKBIP expression in ESCC tissues was significantly increased and was associated with the prognosis of ESCC patients. In vitro experiments revealed that IKBIP knockdown significantly inhibited the proliferation and migration of ESCC cells, and induced cell apoptosis and G1/S phase arrest. Molecular mechanism results showed that the AKT signaling pathway was further activated after IKBIP overexpression, thereby increasing the proliferation and migration abilities of ESCC cells. In vivo study confirmed that IKBIP promoted the initiation and development of ESCC tumors in mice. CONCLUSIONS: IKBIP plays a tumor-promoting role in ESCC and may serve as a predictive biomarker and a potential therapeutic target for ESCC.

Simultaneous recovery of heavy metal ions (HMIs) such as Cu(II) and Cr(VI) from strong-acid media was a great challenge due to the inhibition of protons. Herein, a novel biomass hydrogel (CMC/PEI-PD) containing various groups (bis-picolylamine, amino, and hydroxyl groups) was newly prepared by a facile two-step process. The static experiments relating pH, kinetics and isothermal co-adsorption confirmed the synergistic effect towards Cu(II) and Cr(VI) consistently. Specifically, the adsorption capacities of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) at pH 2.0 increased by 23.73% and 40.18% in comparison with the single systems. Moreover, coexistence of inorganic anions and cations could further increase the adsorption of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) by 59.90% and 43.39%, respectively. At the same time, the adsorption and desorption ratios for both HMIs remained stable. The superior performance came from the two dominant mechanisms of co-removal. On the one hand, Cu(II) chelated by bis-picolylamine group attracted Cr(VI) in the form of cation bridge, thus promoting Cr(VI) adsorption. On the other hand, the protonated amine group attracted Cr(VI) by electrostatic interaction and weakened the inter-cationic repulsion by electrostatic shielding, thus promoting Cu(II) adsorption. In addition, the dynamic column experiment towards simulated acidic electroplating wastewater involving Cu(II)-Cr(VI)-Ni(II) certified the high efficiency and feasibility of the co-removal. Therefore, CMC/PEI-PD owned great potential in the separation of typical HMIs even directly from strong-acid media.

Soil profiles were collected from three primary forests (Itoa orientalis, Platycladus orientalis, and Radermachera sinica) in Karst cluster-peak depression region to study the composition of soil aggregates, their organic carbon contents, and the profile distribution of the organic carbon. In the three forests, >2 mm soil aggregates were dominant, occupying about 76% of the total. The content of soil total organic carbon ranged from 12.73 to 68.66 g x kg(-1), with a significant difference among the forests. The organic carbon content in <1 mm soil aggregates was slightly higher than that in >2 mm soil aggregates, but most of soil organic carbon was stored in the soil aggregates with greater particle sizes. About 70% of soil organic carbon came from >2 mm soil aggregates. There was a significant positive relationship between the contents of 2-5 and 5-8 mm soil aggregates and the content of soil organic carbon. To increase the contents of 2-8 mm soil aggregates could effectively improve the soil carbon sequestration in Karst region. In Itoa orientalis forest, 2-8 mm soil aggregates accounted for 46% of the total, and the content of soil total organic carbon reached to 37.62 g x kg(-1), which implied that Itoa orientalis could be the suitable tree species for the ecological restoration in Karst region.
