RESUMO

Malignant lesions in the nasopharynx are not infrequently missed by conventional endoscopic biopsy, even if repeated. To improve the diagnostic yield of nasopharyngeal examination, we have developed a technique for fine needle aspiration biopsy of the nasopharynx. Histological correlation was possible in 121 cases in which cytology was reported as malignant. Malignancy was confirmed in 92 cases. In the remaining 29 cases histological examination revealed only benign or atypical changes. However, all these patients had clinical evidence of a malignant growth in the nasopharynx, and 21 of them had, in addition, enlarged cervical nodes. Fine needle aspirates from these nodes showed malignant cells similar to those of the primary site. The failure to obtain representative biopsies for histology could be explained by the deep situation of tumors below the surface epithelium. We believe that fine needle aspiration is more useful and reliable than conventional surgical biopsy in the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and that it improves the diagnostic yield of endoscopic examination.

RESUMO

Thirteen treatments to compare effects of dietary fat on milk yield and composition were control, 15% whole cottonseed, and 2 and 4% Ca-tallowate factorially distributed in low forage (35% corn silage DM) with 14 or 18% CP and high forage (66% corn silage) diets with an additional diet of 8% Ca-tallowate. Different treatments were fed to 36 cows in each of three 28-d periods. Feeding 2 and 4% Ca-tallowate improved milk yield with high forage, although DM intake was slightly depressed; compared with 4% Ca-tallowate, DM intake and milk yield were depressed by 8% Ca-tallowate. Across all diets, whole cottonseed depressed DM intake and milk yield more than when nearly equal fat came from Ca-tallowate (4%). Calcium-tallowate depressed milk fat percentage linearly. Milk fat from cows fed whole cottonseed or Ca-tallowate contained unsaturated fatty acids (mostly C18:1) and lesser quantities of short-chain fatty acids. In a subsequent experiment, Ca-tallowate depressed milk fat percentage, whereas Megalac (calcium salts of fatty acids from palm oil) did not. In a field study, one trial with 210 cows in midlactation showed no effect on milk yield and composition from .54 kg of Megalac/d for 60 d, nor was there any effect detected with 121 cows in early lactation from feeding of .45 kg of Megalac/d for 90 d.

RESUMO

Data are presented on the histogenesis of the omasal mucosa in sheep from the 2.5 cm crown-rump (c-r) length fetus to the adult. 11 stages of fetal development, and 4 post-natal stages, were studies. The distribution of glycogen in the omasal epithelium was also studied. During fetal life the omasal epithelium was initially stratified cuboidal in type, but the superficial layers of cells became flattened in later stages of gestation. This epithelium became extremely thick by the late stages of fetal life, reaching a maximum of 358 micron, and consisting of greater than 20 layers of cells, in the 45 cm c-r fetus (approximatelay 140 days). After birth the epithelium became markedly reduced in thickness, being approximately 77 micron in the adult, and had differentiated into a cornified stratified squamous epithelium of the adult type by 12 weeks after birth. Glycogen was extremely abundant in the omasal epithelium of the 2.5 cm fetus, and declined gradually thereafter to be almost completely absent in post-natal specimens. 4 orders of laminae were present in the adult omasum, distributed in the seqeunce 1-4-3-4-2-4-3-4-1. The 1st order was already present in fetuses of 2.5 cm c-r length, with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th appearing by the 3.5, 5.5 and 11.0 cm stages, respectively. Initial stages in the development of conical papillae were first seen in 15.0 cm fetuses, but the development of these papillae was not completed until after birth.
