RESUMO

As part of a larger program aiming at assessing transfer and effects of metals in food webs, this work studied the spatial distribution of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in 101 sub-surface soils, systematically sampled (1 x 1 km regular grid) over a large area around Annaba, the fourth most-populated city of Algeria. Cd and Cr exhibited only one abnormally high value, with all other concentrations being close to pedogeological background. Some places in the centre of the city were polluted by Pb (up to 823 mg kg(-1)), probably due to aerial deposition from gasoline exhausts. Zn never exceeded regulatory limits over the whole sampling area. Cu was the only element for which a spatial autocorrelation occurred. A spatial interpolation by cokriging allowed the identification of agricultural activities as the main Cu pollution source. Our approach revealed various anthropogenic pollution sources, more efficiently for large-scale patterns than for local abnormalities.

This study aimed to compare the transfer of 2 manmade radionuclides, radiocesium (137Cs) and radiostrontium (90Sr), from cow milk to whey and cheese in 3 different types of French cheese production with rennet coagulation. Most of the 137Cs was present in the aqueous phase and became concentrated in the whey. For 137Cs transfer to whey, the processing factor (Pf; i.e., the ratio of the activity concentrations) ranged between 0.86 and 1.30 (n = 12). The food processing retention factor (Fr), calculated using the processing efficiency, ranged between 0.85 and 1.19 (n = 9). No statistical difference of Pf and Fr to whey is identified for 137Cs and the cheese products. The Pf calculated for 90Sr transfer to cheese ranged between 3.95 and 12.16, with significant differences depending on the type of cheese. In addition, a linear correlation is observed between 90Sr Pf to cheese and the Ca level in the cheese (r2 = 0.57). Thus, the Pf is enhanced in hard cheeses that are enriched in calcium. This is confirmed by nearly constant Fr values, ranging between 0.66 and 0.83.

The regularities of 137Cs distribution in trees (Pinus sylvestris and Betula pendula) growing in different types of forest ecosystems were investigated. High levels of heterogeneity of 137Cs activity concentrations in different parts of the trees, resulting from their varied metabolism have been shown. The data obtained demonstrate a non-uniform character of 137Cs distribution along the trunks, which can be explained by radionuclide fixation by the xylem vessel walls and by geometry changes along the tree trunk. It has been found that the radial distribution of 137Cs in the tree trunk is dependent on the availability of 137Cs in soil, which governs the transfer of this radionuclide via xylem sap and on the properties of the xylem. The accumulation of 137Cs by trees was influenced by the vertical distribution and availability of 137Cs in the soil as well as by the root biomass distribution in different soil horizons. A bioavailability factor, which takes into account the vertical distribution of radiocesium in soil, bioavailability of this radionuclide and distribution of root biomass in different soil horizons is proposed for comparative analyses of 137Cs transfer from soil to trees in different types of forest ecosystems.
