Introduction: European guidelines recommend the implementation of lipid-lowering therapies (LLTs) in adults (≥ 65 years) with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and for risk-based primary prevention in older adults (≤ 75 years), yet their use in very-old adults (> 75 years) is controversial, discretionary, and oriented on the presence of risk factors. The aim of this retrospective study is to assess guideline-directed LLT implementation and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) target achievement in high-/very-high-risk older/very-old adults (65-74 and ≥ 75 years) at presentation for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and also to assess evidence-based care delivery to older adults in our region. Methods: All STEMI patients with available LDL-C and total cholesterol presenting for treatment at a large tertiary center in Salzburg, Austria, 2018-2020, were screened (n = 910). High-risk/very-high-risk patients (n = 369) were classified according to European guidelines criteria and divided into cohorts by age: < 65 years (n = 152), 65-74 years (n = 104), and ≥ 75 years (n = 113). Results: Despite being at high-/very-high-risk, prior LLT use was < 40% in the total cohort, with no significant difference by age. Statin monotherapy predominated; 20%-23% of older/very-old adults in the entire cohort were using low-/moderate-intensity stains, 11%-13% were using high-intensity statins, 4% were on ezetimibe therapy, and none were taking proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors. In the secondary prevention cohort, 53% of older/very-old patients used prior LLTs. Significantly higher percentages of older/oldest ASCVD patients (43% and 49%) met LDL-C targets < 70 mg/dL compared to patients < 65 years (29%; p = 0.033), although just 22% and 30% of these older groups attained stricter LDL-C targets of < 55 mg/dL. Low LLT uptake (16%) among older adults aged 64-74 years for primary prevention resulted in 17% and 10% attainment of risk-based LDL-C targets < 70 mg/dL and < 55 mg/dL, respectively. Oldest adults (≥ 75 years) in both primary and secondary prevention groups more often met risk-based targets than older and younger adults, despite predominantly receiving low-/moderate-intensity statin monotherapy. Conclusion: Secondary prevention was sub-optimal in our region. Less than half of older/very-old adults with established ASCVD met LDL-C targets at the time of STEMI, suggesting severe care-delivery deficits in LLT implementation. Shortcomings in initiation of risk-based LLTs were also observed among high-/very-high-risk primary prevention patients < 75 years, with the achievement of risk-based LDL-C targets in 10%-48% of these patients.

Carboxylates are ideal directing groups because they are widely available, readily cleavable and excellent linchpins for diverse follow-up reactions. However, their use in meta-selective C-H functionalizations remains a substantial unmet catalytic challenge. Herein, we report the ruthenium-catalyzed meta-C-H alkylation of aromatic carboxylic acids with various functionalized alkyl halides. A bidentate N-ligand increases the electron density at the metal center of ortho-benzoate ruthenacycles to the extent that single-electron reductions of alkyl halides can take place. The subsequent addition of alkyl radicals is exclusively directed to the position para to the CAr-Ru bond, i.e., meta to the carboxylate group. The resulting catalytic meta-C-H alkylation extends to a wide range of (hetero)aromatic carboxylic acids including benzofused five-membered ring heteroarenes but no pyridine derivatives in combination with secondary/tertiary alkyl halides, including fluorinated derivatives. It also allows site-selective C5-H alkylation of 1-naphthoic acids. The products are shown to be synthetic hubs en route to meta-alkylated aryl ketones, nitriles, amides, esters and other functionalized products.

Multi-lab projects are large scale collaborations between participating data collection sites that gather empirical evidence and (usually) analyze that evidence using meta-analyses. They are a valuable form of scientific collaboration, produce outstanding data sets and are a great resource for third-party researchers. Their data may be reanalyzed and used in research synthesis. Their repositories and code could provide guidance to future projects of this kind. But, while multi-labs are similar in their structure and aggregate their data using meta-analyses, they deploy a variety of different solutions regarding the storage structure in the repositories, the way the (analysis) code is structured and the file-formats they provide. Continuing this trend implies that anyone who wants to work with data from multiple of these projects, or combine their datasets, is faced with an ever-increasing complexity. Some of that complexity could be avoided. Here, we introduce MetaPipeX, a standardized framework to harmonize, document and analyze multi-lab data. It features a pipeline conceptualization of the analysis and documentation process, an R-package that implements both and a Shiny App (https://www.apps.meta-rep.lmu.de/metapipex/) that allows users to explore and visualize these data sets. We introduce the framework by describing its components and applying it to a practical example. Engaging with this form of collaboration and integrating it further into research practice will certainly be beneficial to quantitative sciences and we hope the framework provides a structure and tools to reduce effort for anyone who creates, re-uses, harmonizes or learns about multi-lab replication projects.

Conspiracy beliefs have spread during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is important to understand them because of their potential to undermine trust in societal institutions and willingness to get vaccined. In the present research (N = 538), we assessed the links between conspiracy beliefs, trust in institutions (e.g., government, WHO), and attitudes towards the Covid-19 vaccination across the USA, Brazil and the UK. A moderated mediation analysis revealed the crucial role of political leaders in linking conspiracy beliefs with vaccination attitudes. Trust in the president was positively associated with conspiracy beliefs in Brazil because of its conspiracist president at the time (Bolsonaro), which in turn was negatively associated with vaccination attitudes. In contrast, trust in political leaders at the time in the UK (Johnson) and the USA (Biden) was negatively associated with conspiracy beliefs. In conclusion, our findings contribute to understanding the underlying mechanisms that link conspiracy beliefs with trust and vaccination attitudes.

Purpose: To determine the value of an algorithm for reducing stair-step artifacts for advanced coronary analyses in sequential mode coronary CT angiography (CCTA). Methods: Forty patients undergoing sequential mode photon-counting detector CCTA with at least one stair-step artifact were included. Twenty patients (14 males; mean age 57±17years) with 45 segments showing stair-step artifacts and without atherosclerosis were included for CTFFR analysis. Twenty patients (20 males; mean age 74±13years) with 22 segments showing stair-step artifacts crossing an atherosclerotic plaque were included for quantitative plaque analysis. Artifacts were graded, and CTFFR and quantitative coronary plaque analyses were performed in standard reconstructions and in those reconstructed with a software (entitled ZeeFree) for artifact reduction. Results: Stair-step artifacts were significantly reduced in ZeeFree compared to standard reconstructions (p<0.05). In standard reconstructions, CTFFR was not feasible in 3/45 (7 %) segments but was feasible in all ZeeFree reconstructions. In 9/45 (20 %) segments without atherosclerosis, the ZeeFree algorithm led to a change of CTFFR values from pathologic in standard to physiologic values in ZeeFree reconstructions. In one segment (1/22, 5 %), quantitative plaque analysis was not feasible in standard but only in ZeeFree reconstruction. The mean overall plaque volume (111±60 mm3), the calcific (77±47 mm3), fibrotic (31±28 mm3), and lipidic (4±3 mm3) plaque components were higher in standard than in ZeeFree reconstructions (overall 75±50 mm3, p<0.001; calcific 51±42 mm3, p<0.001; fibrotic 22±19 mm3, p<0.05; lipidic 3±3 mm3, p=0.055). Conclusion: Despite the lack of reference standard modalities for CTFFR and coronary plaque analysis, initial evidence indicates that an algorithm for reducing stair-step artifacts in sequential mode CCTA increases the rate and quality of datasets amenable to advanced coronary artery analysis, hereby potentially improving patient management.

Palladium-catalyzed cross-couplings of aryl chlorides usually call for bulky, electron-rich ligands such as phosphines or heterocyclic carbenes. We have now found that similarly powerful cross-coupling catalysts are obtained by the reaction of palladium salts with alkynyllithium reagents. The species initially formed in this process was characterized as a dilithium tetraalkinyl palladate complex. It catalyzes the coupling of aryl chlorides with the lithium salts of various terminal alkynes to give alkynyl arenes. The isolated Li-alkynyl-Pd complex also efficiently promotes the reaction of aryl, and allyl chlorides with (hetero)aryl-, alkyl-, and allyllithium compounds as well as lithium amines. None of these reactions proceeded in the presence of palladium salts alone. The preparative utility of this approach was demonstrated by the synthesis of 49 molecules, including pharmaceutically relevant compounds.

When plants die, neighbours escape competition. Living conspecifics could disproportionately benefit because they are freed from negative intraspecific processes; however, if the negative effects of past conspecific neighbours persist, other species might be advantaged, and diversity might be maintained through legacy effects. We examined legacy effects in a mapped forest by modelling the survival of 37,212 trees of 23 species using four neighbourhood properties: living conspecific, living heterospecific, legacy conspecific (dead conspecifics) and legacy heterospecific densities. Legacy conspecific effects proved nearly four times stronger than living conspecific effects; changes in annual survival associated with legacy conspecific density were 1.5% greater than living conspecific effects. Over 90% of species were negatively impacted by legacy conspecific density, compared to 47% by living conspecific density. Our results emphasize that legacies of trees alter community dynamics, revealing that prior research may have underestimated the strength of density dependent interactions by not considering legacy effects.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide and is caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV viral load, the amount of HPV DNA in a sample, has been suggested to correlate with cervical disease severity, and with clinical outcome of cervical cancer. In this systematic review, we searched three databases (EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science) to examine the current evidence on the association between HPV viral load in cervical samples and disease severity, as well as clinical outcome. After exclusion of articles not on HPV, cervical cancer, or containing clinical outcomes, 85 original studies involving 173 746 women were included. The vast majority (73/85 = 85.9%) reported that a higher viral load was correlated with higher disease severity or worse clinical outcome. Several studies reported either no correlation (3/85 = 3.5%), or the opposite correlation (9/85 = 10.6%); possible reasons being different categorization of HPV viral load levels, or the use of specific sampling methods. Despite variations in study design and populations, the above findings suggest that HPV viral load is correlated to clinical outcome, and may become an important biomarker for treatment selection and response monitoring for cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the accuracy of a synthetic hematocrit derived from virtual non-contrast (VNC) and virtual non-iodine images (VNI) for myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) computation with photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing PCD-CT including a coronary CT angiography (CCTA) and a late enhancement (LE) scan and having a blood hematocrit were retrospectively included. In the first 75 patients (derivation cohort), CCTA and LE scans were reconstructed as VNI at 60, 70, and 80 keV and as VNC with quantum iterative reconstruction (QIR) strengths 2, 3, and 4. Blood pool attenuation (BPmean) was correlated to blood hematocrit. In the next 50 patients (validation cohort), synthetic hematocrit was calculated using BPmean. Myocardial ECV was computed using the synthetic hematocrit and compared with the ECV using the blood hematocrit as a reference. RESULTS: In the derivation cohort (49 men, mean age 79 ± 8 years), a correlation between BPmean and blood hematocrit ranged from poor for VNI of CCTA at 80 keV, QIR2 (R2 = 0.12) to moderate for VNI of LE at 60 keV, QIR4; 70 keV, QIR3 and 4; and VNC of LE, QIR3 and 4 (all, R2 = 0.58). In the validation cohort (29 men, age 75 ± 14 years), synthetic hematocrit was calculated from VNC of the LE scan, QIR3. Median ECV was 26.9% (interquartile range (IQR), 25.5%, 28.8%) using the blood hematocrit and 26.8% (IQR, 25.4%, 29.7%) using synthetic hematocrit (VNC, QIR3; mean difference, -0.2%; limits of agreement, -2.4%, 2.0%; p = 0.33). CONCLUSION: Synthetic hematocrit calculated from VNC images enables an accurate computation of myocardial ECV with PCD-CT. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Virtual non-contrast images from cardiac late enhancement scans with photon-counting detector CT allow the calculation of a synthetic hematocrit, which enables accurate computation of myocardial extracellular volume. KEY POINTS: Blood hematocrit is mandatory for conventional myocardial extracellular volume computation. Synthetic hematocrit can be calculated from virtual non-iodine and non-contrast photon-counting detector CT images. Synthetic hematocrit from virtual non-contrast images enables computation of the myocardial extracellular volume.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a tumour entity with unmet medical need. To assess the therapeutic potential of oncolytic virotherapy (OVT) against PDAC, different oncolytic viruses (OVs) are currently investigated in clinical trials. However, systematic comparisons of these different OVs in terms of efficacy against PDAC and biomarkers predicting therapeutic response are lacking. METHODS: We screened fourteen patient-derived PDAC cultures which reflect the intra- and intertumoural heterogeneity of PDAC for their sensitivity to five clinically relevant OVs, namely serotype 5 adenovirus Ad5-hTERT, herpes virus T-VEC, measles vaccine strain MV-NIS, reovirus jin-3, and protoparvovirus H-1PV. Live cell analysis, quantification of viral genome/gene expression, cell viability as well as cytotoxicity assays and titration of viral progeny were conducted. Transcriptome profiling was employed to identify potential predictive biomarkers for response to OV treatment. FINDINGS: Patient-derived PDAC cultures showed individual response patterns to OV treatment. Twelve of fourteen cultures were responsive to at least one OV, with no single OV proving superior or inferior across all cultures. Known host factors for distinct viruses were retrieved as potential biomarkers. Compared to the classical molecular subtype, the quasi-mesenchymal or basal-like subtype of PDAC was found to be more sensitive to H-1PV, jin-3, and T-VEC. Generally, expression of viral entry receptors did not correlate with sensitivity to OV treatment, with one exception: Expression of Galectin-1 (LGALS1), a factor involved in H-1PV entry, positively correlated with H-1PV induced cell killing. Rather, cellular pathways controlling immunological, metabolic and proliferative signaling appeared to determine outcome. For instance, high baseline expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) correlated with relative resistance to oncolytic measles virus, whereas low cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) expression was associated with exceptional response. Combination treatment of MV-NIS with a cGAS inhibitor improved tumour cell killing in several PDAC cultures and cells overexpressing cGAS were found to be less sensitive to MV oncolysis. INTERPRETATION: Considering the heterogeneity of PDAC and the complexity of biological therapies such as OVs, no single biomarker can explain the spectrum of response patterns. For selection of a particular OV, PDAC molecular subtype, ISG expression as well as activation of distinct signaling and metabolic pathways should be considered. Combination therapies can overcome resistance in specific constellations. Overall, oncolytic virotherapy is a viable treatment option for PDAC, which warrants further development. This study highlights the need for personalised treatment in OVT. By providing all primary data, this study provides a rich source and guidance for ongoing developments. INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is one of the leading causes of reduced quality of life in the USA, with knee pain commonly reported. Multiple therapeutic modalities are traditionally utilized for pain management; however, some patients may have pain refractory to these techniques. Cooled radiofrequency ablation (c-RFA) of the geniculate nerve is a growing and promising therapy offering a potentially long-term solution to chronic knee pain. METHODS: This study assessed the efficacy, average duration of relief, and potential adverse events using a retrospective chart review of 406 procedures. A two-tailed paired t test was used to assess the statistical significance between pre-RFA vs. post-RFA visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores self-reported by patients. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used to evaluate for statistical differences in pre-RFA pain scores and post-RFA pain scores among the categories of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and diagnosis group. RESULTS: The mean percent in pain improvement calculated was 65.5% with an average duration of relief of 7.20 months. The average pre-RFA pain score on the VAS was 6.26 out of 10 and 2.59 out of 10 post-RFA. The ANOVA post-RFA pain scores demonstrated statistically significant differences among the categories of age and sex. A total of 54 adverse events were reported, including worsening pain, numbness, paresthesia, and knee swelling. CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated that c-RFA can potentially be utilized as an alternative safe therapy for chronic knee pain, providing pain relief with a relatively prolonged duration. Inherent challenges of retrospective studies remain a part of the limitations of this study.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a lifesaving therapy in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Hemostatic complications are frequently observed in patients on ECMO and limit the success of this therapy. Platelets are key mediators of hemostasis enabling activation, aggregation, and thrombus formation by coming in contact with exposed matrix proteins via their surface receptors such as glycoprotein (GP) VI or GPIb/V/IX. Recent research has elucidated a regulatory role of the GPV subunit. The cleaved soluble GPV (sGPV) ectodomain was identified to spatiotemporally control fibrin formation through complex formation with thrombin. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to decipher the impact of ECMO on platelet phenotype and function, including the role of GPV and plasmatic sGPV. METHODS: We recruited 36 patients with ARDS in the wake of COVID-19 pneumonia and performed a longitudinal comparison of platelet phenotype and function in non-ECMO (n = 23) vs ECMO (n = 13) compared with those of healthy controls. Patients were assessed at up to 3 time points (t1 = days 1-3; t2 = days 4-6; and t3 = days 7-14 after cannulation/study inclusion). RESULTS: Agonist-induced platelet activation was assessed by flow cytometry and revealed decreased GPIIb/IIIa activation and α-granule release in all ARDS patients. During ECMO treatment, agonist-induced δ-granule release continuously decreased, which was independently confirmed by electron microscopy and was associated with a prolonged in vitro bleeding time. GPV expression on the platelet surface markedly decreased in ECMO patients compared with that in non-ECMO patients. Plasma sGPV levels were increased in ECMO patients and were associated with poor outcome. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate an ECMO-intrinsic platelet δ-granule deficiency and hemostatic dysfunction beyond the underlying ARDS.

Marker-assisted selection (MAS) plays a crucial role in crop breeding improving the speed and precision of conventional breeding programmes by quickly and reliably identifying and selecting plants with desired traits. However, the efficacy of MAS depends on several prerequisites, with precise phenotyping being a key aspect of any plant breeding programme. Recent advancements in high-throughput remote phenotyping, facilitated by unmanned aerial vehicles coupled to machine learning, offer a non-destructive and efficient alternative to traditional, time-consuming, and labour-intensive methods. Furthermore, MAS relies on knowledge of marker-trait associations, commonly obtained through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), to understand complex traits such as drought tolerance, including yield components and phenology. However, GWAS has limitations that artificial intelligence (AI) has been shown to partially overcome. Additionally, AI and its explainable variants, which ensure transparency and interpretability, are increasingly being used as recognised problem-solving tools throughout the breeding process. Given these rapid technological advancements, this review provides an overview of state-of-the-art methods and processes underlying each MAS, from phenotyping, genotyping and association analyses to the integration of explainable AI along the entire workflow. In this context, we specifically address the challenges and importance of breeding winter wheat for greater drought tolerance with stable yields, as regional droughts during critical developmental stages pose a threat to winter wheat production. Finally, we explore the transition from scientific progress to practical implementation and discuss ways to bridge the gap between cutting-edge developments and breeders, expediting MAS-based winter wheat breeding for drought tolerance.

The sustainable synthesis of long carbon chain molecules from carbon dioxide, water and electricity relies on the development of waste-free, highly selective C-C bond forming reactions. An example for such a power-to-chemicals process is the industrial-scale fermentation for the production of hexanoic acid. Herein, we describe how this product is transformed into 6-undecanone via decarboxylative ketonization using a heterogeneous manganese oxide/silica catalyst. The reaction reaches full conversion with near-complete selectivity when carried out in a continuous flow reactor, requires no solvent or carrier gas, and releases carbon dioxide and water as the only by-products. The reactor was operated for several weeks with no loss of reactivity, producing 7 kg of 6-undecanone from 10 g of catalyst and achieving a productivity of 1.135 kg per litre of reactor volume per hour. 6-Undecanone and other long-chain ketones accessible this way can be hydrogenated to industrially meaningful alkanes, or converted into valuable fatty acids via a hydrogenation/elimination/isomerizing hydrocarboxylation sequence.

A convergent route toward nitrogen-bridged BODIPY oligomers has been developed. The synthetic key step is a Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling reaction of an α-amino-BODIPY and the respective halide. Not only does the selective synthesis provide control of the oligomer size, but the facile preparative procedure also enables easy access to these types of dyes. Furthermore, functionalized examples were accessible via brominated derivatives.

BACKGROUND: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) emerged as a novel approach for the treatment of localized prostate cancer (PCa). However, prospective studies on HIFU-related outcomes and predictors of treatment failure (TF) remain scarce. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a multinational prospective cohort study among patients undergoing HIFU therapy for localized, low- to intermediate-risk PCa. Follow-up data on serial prostate specific antigen (PSA), multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI), targeted/systematic biopsies, adverse events and functional outcomes were collected. The primary endpoint was TF, defined as histologically confirmed PCa requiring whole-gland salvage treatment. Uni- and multi-variable adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated using Cox proportional hazard regression models. RESULTS: At baseline, mean (standard deviation) age was 64.14 (7.19) years, with the majority of patients showing T-stage 1 (73.9%) and International Society of Urological Pathology grading system Grade 2 (58.8%). PSA nadir (median, 1.70 ng/mL) was reached after 6 months. Of all patients recruited, 16% had clinically significant PCa, as confirmed by biopsy, of which 13.4% had TF. Notably, T-stage and number of positive cores at initial biopsy were independent predictors of TF during follow-up (HR [95% CI] 1.27 [1.02-1.59] and 5.02 [1.80-14.03], respectively). Adverse events were minimal (17% and 8% early and late adverse events, respectively), with stable or improved functional outcomes in the majority of patients. CONCLUSIONS: This interim analysis of a multinational study on HIFU therapy for the management of low-to-intermediate-risk PCa reveals good functional outcomes, minimal adverse events and low incidence of TF over the short-term. Data on long-term outcomes, specifically as it relates to oncological outcomes, are awaited eagerly.

OBJECTIVES: Calcified plaques induce blooming artifacts in coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) potentially leading to inaccurate stenosis evaluation. Tungsten represents a high atomic number, experimental contrast agent with different physical properties than iodine. We explored the potential of a tungsten-based contrast agent for photon-counting detector (PCD) CCTA in heavily calcified coronary vessels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cardiovascular phantom exhibiting coronaries with calcified plaques was imaged on a first-generation dual-source PCD-CT. The coronaries with 3 different calcified plaques were filled with iodine and tungsten contrast media solutions equating to iodine and tungsten delivery rates (IDR and TDR) of 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 g/s, respectively. Electrocardiogram-triggered sequential acquisitions were performed in the spectral mode (QuantumPlus). Virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) were reconstructed from 40 to 190 keV in 1 keV increments. Blooming artifacts and percentage error stenoses from calcified plaques were quantified, and attenuation characteristics of both contrast media were recorded. RESULTS: Blooming artifacts from calcified plaques were most pronounced at 40 keV (78%) and least pronounced at 190 keV (58%). Similarly, percentage error stenoses were highest at 40 keV (48%) and lowest at 190 keV (2%), respectively. Attenuation of iodine decreased monotonically in VMIs from low to high keV, with the strongest decrease from 40 keV to 100 keV (IDR of 2.5 g/s: 1279 HU at 40 keV, 187 HU at 100 kV, and 35 HU at 190 keV). The attenuation of tungsten, on the other hand, increased monotonically as a function of VMI energy, with the strongest increase between 40 and 100 keV (TDR of 2.5 g/s: 202 HU at 40 keV, 661 HU at 100 kV, and 717 HU at 190 keV). For each keV level, the relationship between attenuation and IDR/TDR could be described by linear regressions (R2 ≥ 0.88, P < 0.001). Specifically, attenuation increased linearly when increasing the delivery rate irrespective of keV level or contrast medium. Iodine exhibited the highest relative increase in attenuation values at lower keV levels when increasing the IDR. Conversely, for tungsten, the greatest relative increase in attenuation values occurred at higher keV levels when increasing the TDR. When high keV imaging is desirable to reduce blooming artifacts from calcified plaques, IDR has to be increased at higher keV levels to maintain diagnostic vessel attenuation (ie, 300 HU), whereas for tungsten, TDR can be kept constant or can be even reduced at high keV energy levels. CONCLUSIONS: Tungsten's attenuation characteristics in relation to VMI energy levels are reversed to those of iodine, with tungsten exhibiting high attenuation values at high keV levels and vice versa. Thus, tungsten shows promise for high keV imaging CCTA with PCD-CT as-in distinction to iodine-both high vessel attenuation and low blooming artifacts from calcified plaques can be achieved.

Finding the best strategy to minimize the time needed to find a given target is a crucial task both in nature and in reaching decisive technological advances. By considering learning agents able to switch their dynamics between standard and active Brownian motion, here we focus on developing effective target-search behavioral policies for microswimmers navigating a homogeneous environment and searching for targets of unknown position. We exploit projective simulation, a reinforcement learning algorithm, to acquire an efficient stochastic policy represented by the probability of switching the phase, i.e. the navigation mode, in response to the type and the duration of the current phase. Our findings reveal that the target-search efficiency increases with the particle's self-propulsion during the active phase and that, while the optimal duration of the passive case decreases monotonically with the activity, the optimal duration of the active phase displays a non-monotonic behavior.
